Thankfully the four of them were safe for now. That was until Sora mentioned the disappearance of their littlest brother. Lumi tore her eyes from the walls of the cave and looked right next to her, very much prepared to answer that he was right next to her. That was when she realized that he wasn't. She felt a chill run up her spine as her eyes darted about, her fur beginning to spike up in a panic. Where was he? He couldn't have gotten very far, right? Just when she was about to dart over the rows of rocks in front of them, she heard Sora scold Cane. Turning around, she saw Cane with his head protruding from a crevice in the cave wall.

"Cane," Lumi hissed between grit teeth as she padded over to her little brother's side.

She wanted to say something, anything, but she felt like Sora had given him a good scolding. Yelling at a small child would only waste more time. Rolling her eyes, Lumi peered into the crevice. She didn't know much-- if anything --about caves, but she did feel a draft come from deeper inside. She shot Storm and Sora a look after pulling away from the opening. "Looks like there is a way out through here." She leaned down towards the smaller Eevee, a wrinkle on her nose as she patted Cane's head a bit too roughly. "Stay. Close."

Lumi motioned for her brothers to follow as she slipped into the crevice and led them deeper into the tunnel. The pathway dipped down, and she noticed that the rock in some places were slick with water. "Why is it so wet?" she complained, her voice rippling off the walls.

Cane's ears drooped a bit and he ducked his head low as Lumi patted him roughly, "Ok I will, I promise I'll remember this time." He told her while shuffling his way out of the crevice to let the older Eevee go first.

Sora waited for Lumi to head in still a bit shaky from the realization that their littlest brother had wandered off and very easily could have gotten hurt. He was starting to agree more and more with what Storm had said, as much as he hated to admit it. The grayish Eevee was keeping stride with them, but he looked like he would rather be anywhere else than in this cave. He really couldn't blame him at this point, but they were already here and there was no point in turning back now. Not when they had come this far. He pushed Cane into the crevice behind Lumi before following after; turning his gaze to Storm, "Come on, we don't wanna get split up."

They were forced to walk single file in the narrow crevice that Cane had found. He couldn't see anything beyond what his eyes had adjusted to in the darkness. The air around them was musty and smelled weird, a way that made his skin prickle under his fur. He almost slipped on the stone as it suddenly dipped down, but steadied himself before he could go careening into Cane.

Sora glanced towards the walls as Lumi spoke and could just make out the areas that were a darker shade than the rest of the wall around it. "I don't know, it was completely dry and warm up in the other part of the cave." Maybe it was just part of the way that the cave system was? Some places were dry and as they got deeper it got more damp. "Maybe there's an underground river or something." He didn't really know much about how caves worked but that seemed as logical an explanation as any. His mind briefly flashed back to the scars and wounds on the adventurers bodies. He didn't really want to think about what else might be making the walls around them wet.

He mostly kept his eyes on his paws, occasionally glancing behind him to make sure that Storm hadn't gotten left behind before turning his attention back to the front. He squinted forward, over Cane's head and past Lumi's ears as the crevice they were in started to widen out. "Hey, I think I can see some kind of light up there." It was dim and slightly blue in hue, but there was definitely something else that they were coming up on. He wanted to try and push ahead, sheer curiosity overriding common sense, but he couldn't get past Cane who plodded along in front of him. He settled for squinting even harder, trying to discern what it was that was coming up ahead.

This whole thing was very uncomfortable. Lumi felt like she was practically being forced to walk at a quick pace just because there were three whole Eevee behind her. Already, she could feel Cane and Sora's sheer excitement as they walked and walked until the walls finally granted them a bit more room. A sigh of relief escaped her as she had more room to breathe. Sure, it was an uncomfortable experience, but at least it was over and they didn't have to worry about the walls anymore unless they decided to get out the way they came in. Moisture gathered beneath her paws and wet the fur between her toes, making her pads ache slightly, but the pain was quickly diverted to what was in front of them.

They had come across a large cavern, bigger than the whole of Sunspear. It was mostly empty, save for a big river that coursed through the area and many types of outcroppings of rocks. Some of them were a plain gray color like the rest of the rocks that they had seen on their trip so far, while others glowed blue and green. The light they gave off illuminated the whole cave, and Lumi couldn't tell if they were humming or if that was the rush of blood in her ears.

Lumi padded out into the cave, her eyes gazing about with awe. Had they done it? Did they actually find the Sage Stones the village kept talking about? If they told the adventurers, then they'd truly be seen as heroes of the town! "Wow, just look at all of them!" she said as she trotted around the cavern, her eyes bright with amazement. "Do you think we can just take some back? The village is going to think this is so cool!"

Once Lumi stepped out of the crevice Cane bounded forward to stand a little ways in front of her, tail wagging. It seemed he had already somewhat forgotten the scolding he'd received, but he didn't wander too far ahead or out of sight. Instead he stared, eyes wide, around the cavernous space in front of them before trotting forward to stare down into the river that cut through the room.

"Be careful Cane, we won't be able to get you if you fall in," Sora called out to his younger brother as he padded quickly inside to stand next to where Storm had come to a stop after he entered. The area around them was amazing. He had never seen anything like it and he doubted he would again without coming back here. The blues and greens reflected off the water sending scattering, rippled patterns across the high ceiling above. The stones themselves seemed to almost pulse faintly in a way that made his pelt prickle; though he couldn't really tell if it felt good or bad.

Storm had wandered over to one of the stones and leaned in close to it without really touching it. The reflection was slightly distorted due to the planes of the crystal. "There's probably some small ones we could carry, or maybe break some pieces off?" The gray furred Eevee turned to look at Lumi, "Hopefully they'll be able to look past the fact we went against what that Luxray said."

Sora rolled his eyes at his brother. Storm was always playing both sides, but his brother did have a point. "Maybe we take some back but don't tell anyone until we can get an idea of whether or not we'd get in trouble." He really really did not want to be yelled at by their dad, or worse, the adventuring team that they all looked up to. He really wanted something from their adventure though and these stones seemed the best. He wondered if they would continue to glow once they removed them from the room. That would be so cool!

He looked over to where Cane was, to make sure that their littlest brother wasn't causing any trouble. Cane was still crouched by the water's edge and peering down even closer towards the river. Sora trotted quickly over to stand next to his brother, and to place a paw on his tail so he wouldn't tip forward into the water. "What is it? Is there something down there?" He leaned forward himself to look into the massive river, but he was struggling to see anything past the green and blue lights that reflected off the surface. He wrinkled his nose at the spray of water that hit his face as the river pushed up against the banks.

Cane just glanced up at him and shrugged, "I dunno, I was hoping maybe if I sat here long enough I would see something cool." He looked back down into the water with a slight frown, "But I haven't seen anything yet."

"Did you guys hear that?" Storm's voice called out to them in a loud whisper.

He turned to look at his brother who hadn't stepped away from the stone he'd been standing next to, but he could see the furrow of his brother's brow as he looked around the room. "I didn't hear anything," he strained his ears, "but all I can really hear is water right now." He didn't want to step away from Cane in case he did something stupid again, but he could start to feel his heart rate increasing. Storm wasn't one to play pranks so if he said he heard something he most likely did. That creeping feeling of regret and anxiety about whether or not this was a good idea starting to wiggle itself back to the forefront of his mind as he began to scan the room; keeping his ears pricked for any sound or movement.

It was hard keeping track of everything; the four of them were just so excited about their discovery-- by Arceus, even Storm was-- that it was a huge strain to keep her attention on a singular thing for long. Lumi padded up next to Storm, her ears pricked at the idea he gave them. He was right. If they got in trouble for leaving their house, they could show the adventurers the stones they found. There was no way that they'd be angry at them for long. Her ear swiveled back at Sora and Cane, who were distracted with the flow of the river. She would have thought that their littlest brother would like the stones the most, but it was just like him to have his complete attention on some boring water.

Lumi leaned towards the stones, her eyes narrowing at the distorted green reflection that appeared in its smooth surface. It was weird; weren't super shiny and super smooth things supposed to act like a mirror, reflecting a perfect image back at the Pokemon that looked into it? Then why did her own reflection look so different than her? Just as she was about to ask Storm this, he suddenly spoke up and asked if they heard anything. She snapped her jaw shut and strained her ears. All that she heard was the sound of the river and the hum of the green stones.

"I didn't hear anything," she whispered as she shook her head. No matter how hard she listened for the sound that attracted Storm's attention, she just couldn't hear anything that seemed weird. Lumi jabbed a paw into his side. "Are you trying to make us scared?" Lumi narrowed her eyes at him as her fur began to puff up. "Cause I'm not a little cub like Fawn anymore."

Sora and Cane both looked over to where Storm was standing. A look of concern was on Sora's face, but Cane quickly lost interest when he didn't hear anything and turned his attention back to the water. Sora let out a sigh as Lumi also said that she didn't hear anything. Storm wasn't one to joke around, but if none of the others had heard anything either than it was probably just his brother hearing things.

"What? No! I'm not!" Storm recoiled away as Lumi poked him in the side. "I could've sworn I heard something that sounded like a breath or a growl."

He hadn't heard his brother that worked up about anything in a long time, but still, none of them had heard it. "You're probably just hearing echoes or something Storm," Sora told him as he trotted away from Cane to start looking at the edges of the room. Cane seemed to be doing fine where he was so he didn't feel like he needed to hover as much. Instead he wanted to see if there were any other little gaps or things that they could slip through to get deeper in. He had seen the places where the river entered and left the cavern, far off at the edges, but he didn't really want to get wet.

He heard his brother grumble as he wandered back towards the crevice where they had come in and sat down. He really didn't want to deal with Storm's bad attitude right now, but there wasn't exactly a way to get away from it. As far as he could tell he couldn't see any other exits, but he also didn't see one the first time. "Hey Cane," he called out to his little brother who looked up at him and blinked curiously, "You were really good at finding that crevice. Can you look around for something similar in here?"

"Ok!" Cane chirped as he bounded away from the water to start looking around the edges.

Sora took that time to walk back over to Lumi. "Are we just going to take some of this stuff or do we want to keep going if Cane finds something?" He didn't know what time it was, or how long they'd been in the cave and he didn't want their dad to wake up before they got back, then they'd be in a world of trouble. It didn't seem like Storm would want to go any further, but he couldn't be sure. Either way they needed to decide what they were going to do here.

Lumi quirked a brow at Storm. A breath or growl? Her ears were pretty big, and she didn't hear anything of that sort. If it was an actual noise, then wouldn't it produce an echo or sound louder in caves? Was that how noise worked? She didn't know. Either way, Storm sounded like a scaredy-Meowth more than anything. She smirked at him, her tail fluffed out behind her as a mischievous grin spread over her maw. "Are you scared?" She prodded his side again, giving him a sly look. "I can't believe big bro is so scared of this place! Don'tcha gotta be brave?"

It was kind of hard to believe, Storm of all Pokemon being scared of a little noise. But now that she thought about it, the cave was pretty creepy. The glowing rocks or stones or whatever did cover the cave in a weird light, and now that she could hear, she heard the shuffling of paws and the slithering of tails. There were probably Pokemon roaming around a room away. She almost leapt out of her pelt when Sora walked up to them and asked what they were going to do next.

"I think we should start heading back. We could tell the Adventure Team what we saw!" She wagged her tail. But after a moment, she turned back to the stones, a frown on her lips. "I don't think we can break off a chunk of that rock even if we tried. We're too tiny."

It was obvious that Lumi didn't believe Storm and the grayish Eevee pinned his ears back as he glared at his sister. "I'm not scared!" He huffed angrily, "Just being cautious. I don't like the way things feel in here." If even the super powerful adventuring team got beaten to bits while they were in here what hope did they have against something that came their way.

Storm's fur was fluffed up and as much as he tried to say that he wasn't scared the wideness of his eyes as they darted around gave him away to Sora as he walked up. He nodded in agreement with Lumi, "I think that's a good idea. Even if we could I don't know that we'd be able to pull it back through that crevice we came through." He looked around the room for their baby brother. He couldn't see him at first glance, but he was pretty small and the crystals cast a strange light across the floor. "Come on Cane we're leaving!" He called out into the room, flinching a bit as it echoed a bit too much for his liking.

He waited a moment and started to get nervous when he didn't immediately hear or see his brother. It was quickly abated though as the small form came bounding out of the shadows towards them. He gave his brother a smile and began to trot back towards where the crevice was with the others shortly behind him. He turned to say something to Storm when he saw Cane still staring up at the stone they had been looking at. "Hey Cane come on, we need to get home before-,"

"Don't touch it!" Storm screamed out next to him just as Cane's paws came to rest on the smooth surface of the stone. There was a moment of silence before they all had to flatten themselves against the ground as a burst of energy pulsed off the stone, though mostly concentrated on their baby brother, and an agonized scream could be heard.

It was not a sound that Sora ever wanted to hear any of his family make and knowing it came from Cane made his stomach roil. He pushed himself back up, despite feeling like he was about to be sick and took a few steps towards where the stone was. The light in the room almost seemed dimmer as he watched his brother writhe on the floor with dark shadows appearing to bleed off of him. He let out a choked noise as he watched the shape of Cane begin to swell and distort. The screams he heard shifted into low growls and Sora took a few steps backwards, eyes wide with fear and panic.

Lumi was glad that her brothers thought the same. She was worried they'd ignore her all throughout the trip to the cave system just because she was smaller than they were, and frankly, the only sister there. Already, she craved the warmth of her nest and the safety of her home. Hopefully no one noticed them gone yet; she wasn't in the mood to be yelled at by Sable or Toffee, much less their dad. She began to pad over the way that they came, the smooth stone cold against her pads. The cold had even worked its way into her bones and between her toes. She'll have to lick and rub them once she got back home. Guess that's karma for going against what dad and Sable said, she thought to herself, rubbing her pads together even as she sat to wait for her brothers. For some reason, they were taking too long, and that in itself made her fur prickle with annoyance.

"Hey, are we going or not?" Lumi called over her shoulder.

But her question was only answered by Storm's desperate scream, along with an overwhelming heat that pressed against her back. Shrieks of pain, originating from where Cane was once standing, echoed through the cave. The sound hurt her ears, and she pressed her paws against them in order to shield them from the screaming. Her heart pounded against her ribcage as she watched Cane's form twist and morph behind the glow of the light. His screams had become growls and snarls of desperation, and as the bright light slowly dimmed, more and more of Cane's form was revealed by its recession. Lumi's eyes grew wide with a mixture of fascination and fear as a giant beast, similar in appearance to a Vaporeon but not quite, now stood in front of them. Its thick neck hung low as its jaws, lined with pointed teeth, parted to release exhausted heaves.

Lumi glanced at her brothers, filled with fear. But this was Cane they were talking about. No matter how big he was, they had to take him home, right? Not to mention, this was their little brother they were dealing with. Well, he wasn't so little now, but... "C-cane..?" she murmured, taking a step close to him. "Are... you okay? Is that really you?"

Cane's eyes snapped open, revealing yellow orbs that held no semblance of their little brother. The beast tossed its head back and let out a howling, pained roar that shook the very cave itself. Lumi fluffed herself out in fear, her paws now planted in place. She watched as it raised one of its thick legs and slammed its claws into Storm, sending him arching across the air. Her panic turned into terror as she watched the gray furred Eevee slam against the wall right beside her, a sick snap emitting from his spine, before he tumbled to the ground and laid still. She rushed over to his side without a second thought, her eyes wet with tears as her paws pressed against his limp form. The beast roared again as she shook him violently.

"Storm... Storm! Wake up, we need to go home!" Lumi cried.

The beast-- Cane, whatever it was-- turned to look at her. It snarled and lowered itself to the ground as saliva dripped from its fanged maw. Lumi bristled in fear as its yellow gaze seared into her pelt. In her frayed mind, she knew they had to run. But what about Storm? Cane had to be brought back too, somehow. She watched in horror as Cane charged at her, his long fangs bared with the intent to kill. Though he was big and strong, she was still small and nimble. She slipped between his forelegs and dashed towards the cave entrance as Cane slammed into the wall behind her.

"SORA!!" she half-screamed, half-sobbed as she rushed to the entrance as fast as she could. "RUN!!!!"

Sora just heard Lumi call out to ask if they were leaving when it was drowned out by the sound of Storm next to him and the sudden scream of pain. The two brothers started to back away in fear, eyes wide, as the form of their baby brother continued to grow. Sora didn't want to leave Cane, but he couldn't bring himself to move forward towards him. His paws felt like lead and he could feel his whole body trembling as the blood pounded in his ears. Storm still stood next to him, but the grayish Eevee looked even more terrified than before, yellow eyes wide as saucers as he stared in horror at what their brother had become.

He stood stock still and couldn't even hear what Lumi was saying. It was muffled and distant as he stared up at the massive Vaporeon that was once Cane. This is what the adventuring team had been talking about. The stones turning the Pokemon that touched them into massive beasts that were nearly impossible to fight. The dripping fangs, massive claws, and swinging axe-like tail left no room for the imagination as to what would happen if they stuck around any longer, but he just couldn't move.

"Don't go near him!" Storm called out to Lumi as their sister moved towards Cane. He flinched as the beast roared, but could see the fear now holding both Sora and Lumi rigid in place. He watched as the huge, clawed paw raised into the air and bolted towards where Lumi was. The movement pulled the attention away from his sister, just as he wanted, but his eyes went wide for just a brief moment before the claw slammed into him instead.

The roar snapped Sora out of whatever paralysis had taken his body and his head snapped over just in time to see his annoying, grouchy brother get thrown into the wall like he weighed nothing. The snap echoed around the cavern and in his ears and he rushed over just as quickly as Lumi did, breath hitched and heaving as he stared down at the limp form. Yellow eyes wide with fear in his last moments, and the sight burned itself into Sora's brain with a vengeance.

He didn't even register the tears that were building in his eyes as he stared blankly down at Storm. Why? Why? Why? The constant mantra played over and over in his head as everything that had just happened finally caught up to him and he let out a wail of grief. He wanted to throw himself on the ground, over the body of his brother, but he couldn't as the snarl reached his ears and he had to duck behind one of the stones as Lumi slipped through Canes paws.

The scream from his sister drove the fear forward enough as he peered out from behind the stone at the slavering jaws of the creature. It shook its head from the impact against the wall and turned yellow eyes onto him. There was no semblance of the sweet little brother there anymore, and he waited a moment, staring at it, before bolting towards the entrance. The howling roar put speed into his paws as he felt the ground shake as the beast lumbered towards him. He could very nearly feel the heat of its breath on his tail as he squeezed into the crevice just as the claws clashed into the stone where he once was.

Nothing registered as he followed after Lumi at a breakneck pace until they burst out of the cave entrance. He could still hear the angry howls echoing inside though it was slightly muffled by the stone and sound of the river that ran through the ravine. Sides heaving he turned and stared back into the cave, "What...what was that?"

She felt like she had been running for forever. By the time she made it to the cave's entrance with Sora, she felt like she couldn't take another breath. Lumi flopped onto the ground, her mouth gasping for air. Even though her legs ached, they still trembled beneath her form. Her ears strained for any sounds that came from beyond the cave's entrance in hope that they weren't being pursued. Thankfully, she didn't hear the thump of large paws against the ground or the fierce snarls that had previous filled her ears. She wrapped her paws around the top of her head and curled her tail around her form. The shivers came even more now, accompanied by the fresh onset of tears.

"I d-dunno..." she sniffled. Her tears pattered to the stone right in front of her face. It was dark out, it was cold, she was scared-- and she was left with two siblings left than before. Never had she felt so small in her life before. "I... wanna go home..."

Home. That was right. What were they going to tell Sable and the rest of them? That it was their fault that Cane and Storm died? She couldn't imagine the look on their father's face. What would he do, what would he say? Would they be kicked out? Would Sable or Toffee or Fawn even talk to them again? "We can't tell dad about what happened," she whimpered as she raised her head to look at Sora. "They'll never talk to us again if they find out it was our fault. Maybe they'll even... they'll even make us leave town!"

The shaking and heaving hadn't stopped even as Sora made it outside. He followed Lumi's lead and slid onto the ground and could feel the catch of his breath as the fear subsided into grief. He pressed his own body up against his sister's, desperate for some kind of comfort as he stared blankly at the wall in front of him. The tears were silent as the wet the fur around his eyes and across his face. It both had and hadn't hit him that he was the last remaining brother in their family. Storm was dead and Cane was...whatever that beast was now. He didn't know if he would be able to face his family after what had happened. It had been him that had allowed the two other brothers to come in the first place, because he didn't want to get in trouble, and now they were dead.

He nodded shakily in agreement with Lumi, "Me too." He pushed himself up onto aching paws, and hoped that the shaking in his legs wouldn't send him over the edge of one of the narrow paths that they needed to traverse to get back home. He froze as Lumi reminded him that they would have to tell the rest of their family what had happened. "But, we can't just say nothing. They'll ask where Cane and Storm are, and they'll find out if we lie." He didn't want to get in trouble, he didn't want to be kicked out of the house and told to never come back. The shaking returned with a vengeance and it almost forced Sora to sink to the ground again.

It took more willpower than he thought he had left at that point to fight back another wave of tears. He took a step forward and helped Lumi onto her feet. "Lets at least get home. We can figure out what to say on the way." He was the oldest brother, the only brother, and he wasn't about to let them stay out in the cold any longer than they already had. He let a shaky sigh escape as he stared into the darkness for a moment longer. They couldn't even get Storm's body, it was too dangerous, but he tried not to think about it too much.

He bumped gently into Lumi's shoulder to get her moving as they walked on weary paws back in the direction of home. He didn't want to think about what awaited them there, but he also knew that they had to go home at some point. It was their only option other than going back into the cave and hoping to meet his brother, or running away from Sunspear entirely. He wasn't sure if either of those were better options, but his heart weighed heavy and he just wanted the warmth of his nest at this point. Maybe it would all be a bad dream.

She wanted to cry so bad. It was hard to just not lay on the ground and cry until her stomach hurt. She was hungry, cold, and scared, and now they had to walk the rest of the way home without their brothers. Either way, she maintained steady footing on the cliff side and followed after Sora. Her eyes, once bright and upbeat, were now downcast and glued to the rocky floor. Her legs trembled with every step she took after him and her whole tail dragged on the floor. Her skull throbbed; had she touched the Sage Stones without realizing it? Was she going to turn into a brainless monster, too? The thought scared her, though she guessed that Cane was lucky. At least he didn't have to suffer with what he did.

As for them, she was sure that not even Arceus knew what was going to happen.

10 Years Later

"Hey! Get up!" the voice rattled inside of Sora's head as he blinked his eyes open to his roommate, a boisterous Quilava named Asher who sent him a beaming grin as he saw the Eevee's dark eyes blink open. "We gotta get to the guild hall. Apparently there's some big job that is going down and the boss is trying to decide who get to go." There were practically tremors going through his partners body at the prospect of getting to go on whatever job this was and he fought to not roll his eyes.

"Alright, I'm up," he grumbled as he pushed himself up onto weary paws with a grunt. He had spent the previous night wandering the city of Icerend where he'd found himself after he'd left Sunspear several years ago after his father died. He wished he could've left earlier, the memories of what happened at the cave had gnawed at his brain every waking, and dreaming, hour until he had escaped. He knew that he had pretty much shut everyone off once they got back, but he just couldn't bear to look his sisters in the eye. Especially Lumi when she started to act like almost nothing had happened. Being chipper and cracking jokes like their brothers were still alive. He couldn't take it.

He blinked himself out of his thoughts to see Asher's concerned red eyes looking at him. He had never said anything to his friend about what had driven him away from his home. He just gave the other Pokémon a weak smile before shaking the remainder of sleep from his body and stretching with a sigh. "Ok, let's get going before we're late."

Asher grinned and bounded out the door with Sora following at a much slower pace. The sun was still rising over the horizon along the northern coast of the city and he let a small smile come to his face as he smelled the sea air and heard the Wingulls calling to each other in the air. It was slightly colder than in Sunspear, but he liked the chill since it helped wake him up. They padded through the streets, greeting some of the other Pokémon who were up and about this early in the morning. Mostly the shop keepers as well as the post who needed to get started early. More accurately Asher was greeting them with a bright enthusiasm that he found difficult to match. A brief flash of rage directed at his friend hit along with jealously as he questioned how the Quilava could be so chipper. He wanted to smack the smile off his face.

The anger faded just as quickly as it had come making him feel regret and exhaustion. He didn't want to take anything out on his friend, but keeping everything pent up was slowly eating away at him. He shook the thoughts free though as they made it to the towering walls of the guild hall. Asher pushed the door open and they entered the lobby where the other members of their adventuring team were scattered about; waiting for Cash, their boss.

He and Asher settled off to the side and chatted quietly until the whole guild quieted down as the massive Pyroar that led them padded in front of everyone, his fiery mane glowing in the early morning light. Everyone watched with rapt attention as Cash spoke to, "Good morning everyone," his deep voice carried easily, "I know it's early, but we have an interesting proposition that has been brought to us in recent days."

Sora perked up a bit. Did they finally have a real job?

"One of our fellow adventuring teams has offered a joint operation with us." That was not what Sora had expected Cash to say and he sunk back down. Though he did swivel his head a bit as said group started to file their way into the hall and everyone shifted out of the way. He felt his eyes go impossibly wide as he saw a familiar flash of a pale pelt. No, no, it couldn't be her. He refused to work a job with her.

She supposed that this was going to happen eventually.

At first, Lumi didn’t know what to do with the letter that had been left in their mailbox one early morning in the middle of summer. The parchment, faded and shut with a crimson seal, was distinct, foreign, and smooth beneath her paws. It carried the scent of mountain winds and grassy valleys. And the crimson seal was fashioned in the shape of a spire that pointed straight up into a circle, which could be nothing else but a sun. Sunspire. All in all, it was something different than the junk mail that they often received. They were a tiny adventurer’s guild in the midst of a small town– that didn’t mean that they were there to help Pokemon pick kites off of trees, or to help an elderly Flaafy find her glasses. They were supposed to seek out dungeons, rescue stranded Pokemon… not be handy workers and nurse maids! This feeling of stagnation had gathered in Lumi’s chest for the past ten or so years. It fermented in her diaphragm and hung heavy in her gut. To think that, after what had happened, she had come to Fishertown to start a new life for herself. But all she did was dig herself a deeper hole. Now, she didn’t know if she could pull herself out of it.

Rieka had commented on the state of her fur once. She said it had grown too long, too curly, and that she looked like a Herdier more than an Eevee. Lumi always replied that she didn’t care, but even then her words stung; she had known her ever since she got here. The Poochyena was the first one to welcome her into the beachside village of Fishertown, and together they had created the village’s first rendition of an adventurer’s team. Rieka’s energy was too much to handle at first. She was too spazzy, too energetic, and honestly a little dumb. But as time passed, they became closer. They mustered enough money to buy themselves a decently-sized shack and fix it up so it could be somewhat habitable. That little hut became their base of operations, and that was when the “jobs” came pouring in.

“Can you please help me find my lost apple?”

“My toy broke, can you fix it?”

“There’s no way this satchel costs that much! Aren’t you going to do somethin’? He’s obviously scammin’ all these poor Pokemon!”

It was almost enough to drive her insane. It was even worse when Marlow and Enya came rolling around. The Riolu and the hot-headed Fletchling, along with the overly eager Poochyena, drove Lumi to hysterics. No matter how much she begged that they turn down these requests, that they seemed like fools, Rieka and Enya pushed back. And that was how Lumi became known as caretaker of Fishertown rather than the famous adventurer that she always wanted to be. Twilight City, where her dreams of fortune lay for years and years, seemed so far away.

Now that the letter was here, such a vision was only pushed further over the horizon.

Lumi carried it tightly in her paw as she walked down the dusty path and slipped back inside their hut. The letter crumpled in her grip as she settled herself in the small space that they had designated their kitchen. It was much more cramped than it was back home, as it only had a small wooden table and some semblance of a countertop, though she had gotten used to it long ago. The breeze threaded itself between the long grass outside the window and slipped into the room, carrying with it the tinge of salty ocean air and sand. It mussed her fur, but she didn’t pay it any mind. Her orange eyes settled on the wrinkled paper for a few long moments before she adjusted it in her paws, her claws beginning to pull at opposite edges.

“Lumi!” Rieka’s voice barked in her ear and caused her to flinch. The Poochyena had taken such an opportunity to snatch the half-ruined letter from her paws.

Lumi whirled around, her paws flailing to renew their grip on the letter. “Give that back!” she snarled.

The darker-furred Poochyena smirked down at her with bared fangs. She was bigger than her, and Rieka very much knew that. The smaller Eevee growled in frustration as she shoved against the Poochyena, though she didn’t budge an inch.

“A new job?” Rieka flipped the parchment over. Her crimson eyes widened at the sigil pressed onto its back. “Wait… is this…?”

“It’s nothing!” Lumi lashed out with her paws again, but Rieka pulled away and retreated deeper into the hut.

“It’s a letter! A letter from Sunspear’s adventurer’s guild!” Rieka shouted. “It’s an actual job! We actually got somethin’ good!” Her momentary excitement was doused for only a moment and was replaced with a cock of her head and narrowed eyes. “Hey… why were you gonna rip it up? Isn’t this a good thing..?”

Lumi felt like she was going to burn up under her fur. Her teeth clenched so hard that her jaw ached. But no matter how much the fire inside of her blazed, she couldn’t bring herself to let it loose. The flutter of wings cut through the tension, and she looked up to see that a Fletchling had landed on the wooden table. The bird Pokemon’s black-and-white tail, longer than usual, settled neatly on the table behind her as her beady eyes darted between them.

“What are you two yapping about so early in the morning?” Enya’s voice was an annoyed chirp. Marlow trotted up from behind her shortly after.

Rieka lifted up the letter. “We got a letter from Sunspear’s adventurer’s guild.”

Against Lumi’s silent wishes, they tore open the letter and laid it out on the kitchen table. Her shoulders weighed heavier and heavier as they read it out loud. A partnership with Sunspear’s adventurer’s guild. A mission they would conduct together. The three Pokemon in front of her were more than elated to accept. Lumi just wanted to cry and say, for the first time in ten years, that she wanted to remain in Fishertown and find some kid’s apple or fix a rusty toy.

They packed and boarded up their hut within the hour. Marlow asked their neighbor, a Fearow that they had known for the better part of the decade, if he could keep watch over their humble abode. Even the bird-Pokemon was more than elated for them to chase even broader horizons. Everyone was so happy, so excited, so pleased for what was to come. All she felt was dread and despair. Out of all places in the known world, Sunspear was the last place she wanted to visit.

The trip to Sunspear took four days. They headed east, over craggy hills and the smaller, more desolate portion of the Gilded Mountains. Even though they didn’t run into any feral Pokemon, bandits, or highwaypokemon, Lumi’s body felt like it was weighed down by rocks by the time her calloused paws touched the smooth cobblestone of Sunspear’s streets. Her eyes widened as she took in the sights of the town. It was like nothing she remembered; the town’s stalls had transformed into single-leveled stores, complete with glass-window panes and elaborate displays. The local bakery stand had morphed into a bustling storefront that was decorated with freshly baked pastries and breads. Small apartment buildings, forged from sun-baked terracotta, had replaced the wooden huts from when she was just a pup. Everything’s changed so much… Lumi’s eyes darted back and forth, her fur prickling. The Tauros chatting with the Amaura baker. The Luxray and Luxio bickering with one another near the town’s square. Were those familiar faces? Did they recognize her? Was she just making things up in her mind?

Another flutter of wings. Enya perched herself upon her head. “Earth to Lumi!” she chirped. When she didn’t reply, the Fletchling delivered a harsh peck to the top of her skull. The blow made a sharp pain spread over her scalp.

“Ow!” Lumi grumbled, shaking off the parasitic bird from on top of her. “Can you relax?

The Fletchling screeched, thrashing her wings dramatically before she took off and settled on Marlow’s shoulder instead. “See, I would, if I actually knew where we were going!” Enya sneered. Marlow only rolled his eyes at her outburst.

Rieka’s wide gaze took in the sights around them. “Yeah… this place is great and all, but… I have no idea where we're headin'.”

We’re near the town’s center, Lumi told herself, casting her eyes towards the open, circular area in front of them. It felt like so long ago that she was clambering on top of that Taurus to watch the adventurer’s team come back. Storm, Sable, Cane, Sora… she scrunched up her features, her ears pinning back as she tried to drown out the memories. The present. She had to focus on the present. Opening her eyes again, she glanced to the east. If we head deeper into the center, then take a…

After a minute of walking, Marlow motioned in front of them with a dainty paw. “That’s the adventurer’s guild.”

As they stepped into the shadow of the building, she had to prevent her fur from prickling. Marlow held the oaken doors open for them as they slipped inside. The scent of several types of Pokemon reached her nose. The most poignant was Cash’s, the Pyroar that had gathered all of them in the meeting hall of the guild. As Pokemon clustered around them, and when Rieka pushed a path through the crowd for them, even the Pyroar’s scent became lost in the muddle. The smells, the pelts and scales rubbing against each other, the smells of warmth and sweet-stuff and sun-baked soil… her breath caught in her throat. Her eyes widened at the sight of a familiar pelt and a round face. She felt her fur bristle as she locked eyes with Sora’s.

“Yeah, we’re from Fishertown, so we’re a pretty tiny guild…” Rieka said as she padded forward. She grinned her toothy smile, her fluffy tail swaying from side to side. “But that doesn’t mean we ain’t tough! Lumi here's as fierce as thunder! Enya's as swift as the wind, and Marlow's as smart as an Abra! And me, well, you can bet I'm tough as a rock, too, so you should put your trust in us!”

This couldn't be happening. Of all of the guilds that Cash had decided for them to team up with it would be the one that Sora's sister had ended up in. He locked eyes with Lumi only for a moment; noting the fact that her fur looked long and unkempt, before looking away. He squeezed his eyes shut as the memories that he'd forced down just that morning came pushing back up. The excitement they had felt sneaking out, the rush of the river in the gorge, the sound of Cane screaming in agony, and Storm's snapping spine.

"Hey," Asher bumped his shoulder and whispered quietly, "You alright?"

His eyes snapped back open as he looked to the blueish fur of his friend and gave a shaky nod, "Yeah. Just got overwhelmed for a second with all the noise." It happened pretty often so he knew Asher was used to him zoning out and giving an answer like that. He returned his attention to the front of the room to where he saw the Poochyena pipe up about the members of their guild.

"Is there really just four of them?"

"Why would Cash have us team up with a guild so small?"

"I didn't even know Fishertown had an adventuring guild."

The questions and comments swirled around the hall as they all tried to guess what it was that Cash could've been thinking when it came to this. Sora knew that their boss was always a bit...unconventional when it came to his plans. All he really wanted to do now though was go home and stuff his head under his nest.

A wave of Cash's long tail was all it took to quiet everyone down. "I know you all have many questions and concerns, so I will try to address them as much as I can." He gave a respectful nod to Rieka, "We welcome the Fishertown Adventuring Guild and look forward to a successful partnership." He looked out to the rest of the crowd, "Now as to why I have picked Fishertown to work with rather than our usual partners in Twilight City and Redtide is because I want to see some smaller guilds given a chance to make a name for themselves." At the discontented mutters that struck up after that comment Cash swept his tail across the room again. "The world grows more dangerous and we need as much help as we can get these days." The large lionesque Pokémon settled himself down on his haunches, "Now, as for who I have decided will be working with Fishertown on this assignment."

A tight hush fell over the room as everyone held their breath. Though Sora held his for an entirely different reason. The last thing he wanted was to get paired with this group. "Sellie and Ozzy," Cash's voice rang out and two excited cheers sprang up from closer to the front as a stark white Vulpix and large Yamper leapt to their feet in excitement.

Ok. That's good. They were a solid team and would do well with what Sora could already tell was a pretty chaotic dynamic between the team members of Fishertown. Not a surprise given his sister was included. He watched Cash's icy blue eyes sweep the crowd again and tried to make himself as small as he could behind the Chansey in front of him.

"And Asher and Sora." The dreaded words that he had hoped would not come from Cash's mouth. Asher's flames flared to life with surprise and elation as he sent Sora a bright grin. "All of you go to one of the meeting rooms and get acquainted. I will meet you there to discuss your assignment once everything else is in order."

Sora pushed himself up onto somewhat unsteady paws as the blood rushed to his ears. Maybe he could talk to Cash and tell him that he wasn't feeling up to it, or that he had a trip that he forgot he needed to take. No, that wouldn't work. He sighed as he followed along behind Asher and met up with Sellie and Ozzy who looked as pleased as a Caterpie with a sitrus berry. Now they just had to wait for the others to join them. Joy.

This couldn’t be happening. Sora’s expression said it all. He recognized her. Out of all places, out of all times of day, it just had to be today and at this hour. If it had been any other week, any other day, any other hour, then maybe they could have avoided each other. But no, it just had to be this way. Lumi’s eyes were locked on the wooden floor. Cash’s commands blurred into the background, and before she knew it, she was being ushered to a small meeting room with several other unfamiliar Pokemon. Rieka blabbered something excitedly, but even that didn’t register. The Poochyena stared at her, probably expecting her to say something, anything, especially about the very obvious Quilava that was to accompany them– but she didn’t say a word until they reached the meeting spot.

The room was decently sized. Unlike the main hall, it was rectangular, with a large window that provided them with a view of Sunspear’s mountains and plenty of natural light. Lumi’s eyes drifted from the window and back to the main portion of the room. There were maps pinned to the wall, and plants topped cabinets filled with drawers. She wondered what was in them. Her mind ping-ponged between possibilities. Failed expeditions? Lost expedition members? Maybe what happened in Ember Cave?

A shudder passed through her spine, and she felt Rieka’s fur brush against hers, but she shrugged her off and trotted towards the desk in the middle of the room. Leaping onto one of the wooden chairs, she glanced across a map of the local regions around them. A hum left her maw, and she raised her gaze to Sora. Her orangey eyes held no sisterly love towards him; she didn’t want the Pokemon around them to know that they knew each other. Their questions would undoubtedly lead into others, and then into others… and then…

”So, what’s the mission?” she asked with an uninterested flick of her ear.

Rieka wagged her tail and flashed her fangs in a crooked grin. ”Ooo, is it gonna be an exciting one?! Are we traveling the depths of a cave, or maybe a forest, or maybe back towards the coast–”

Enya fluttered down onto the table in front of them before she delivered a slap to the back of Rieka’s head. The Poochyena yelped dramatically, sending a glare back at Enya, only to see her peering down at the map with an interested eye as if she hadn’t just thwacked her friend. Marlow quietly sat upon a chair next to Lumi and said nothing as his red eyes scanned the crowd in front of them.

Sora just followed absentmindedly after the other members of the team. Asher kept sending him concerned looks, but he would give the Quilava a faint smile anytime their eyes met. If they were being given a mission then they had bigger things to worry about than his dislike of his sister. It wasn't like any of them knew anyway. He hadn't told anyone about his family life, other than his father had passed away and that most of his family was scattered across various cities in the region. He hadn't seen any of them in years. It hurt too much to remember what they used to have and where they were after Ember Cave.

Once they stepped into the room he settled himself off to one side as Asher, Sellie, and Ozzy introduced themselves to the Fishertown Adventuring Guild. He let his eyes wander around the meeting room; looking out the window at the mountains before drifting to the plants and maps that covered the space. Anything to keep his eyes off of Lumi. When he heard the hum from her he involuntarily looked in her direction and fought the urge to flinch at the vacancy in her eyes as her gaze met his. He hadn't expected fondness, he didn't have any of that himself, but at least something beyond the nothingness. He looked away.

"With this many of us in the group it has to be something big!" The fluffy white tails swished across the floor behind Sellie as she grinned back at Rieka's excitement.

Her partner shrugged his broad shoulders, but his golden eyes were also bright with possibility. "We never really know what Cash has in mind until he tells us. Could be something far away or it might be something close by." His short tail wagged rapidly with the boundless energy of an electric type.

Before his thoughts could wander too far the door swung open again and the large form of Cash stepped through. He kicked the door shut with a rear paw and stood proudly at the front of the room by the head of the table. "I appreciate everyone's enthusiasm, but I want to go ahead and stress the possible danger that you all might be facing with these missions." That seemed to sober at least the members of Sunspear's guild. "I want you all to get accustomed to working together as a team before I send you to investigate a location that has loomed over us for far too many years," the Pyroar took a slow breath, "Ember Cave."

At the mention of Ember Cave every muscle in Sora's body went rigid, and he was thankful that only Asher, and maybe Lumi, seemed to be paying him any mind. That was it. Sora could feel himself getting sick but he swallowed it down and looked at Cash, "Even one of the best teams that we have couldn't make it through there. What makes you think we can?" Maybe he could convince Cash that it was too much of a risk because by Arceus he did not want to do into that cave ever again.

Cash's ears flicked absently as he looked towards Sora, "As you said, that was years ago, and we don't have any new information on the cave. There are concerns that the Sage Stones are part of the problem with these feral Pokémon that have been cropping up in recent years in greater numbers." He huffed out a sigh, "We're not sending you in there unprepared though. A repeat of last time is the last thing that we want. Instead I'm sending you all on a series of missions beforehand that will prepare you and see how you all work as a team." His blue eyes swept across the group, lingering mostly on the Fishertown guild who he was more unfamiliar with.

"You head out first thing tomorrow morning for Blackwood Forest. We have gotten a report that a number of Pokémon from the surrounding cities have gone missing within the woods and you will either find them or find what reason they're going missing." He walked to the table to point out the forest on the region map. It looked to be about a day and a half journey from Sunspear. "You'll have as much time as you need, and be careful." He turned his massive head to Lumi's team, "You all will have accommodations within the guild hall unless there is somewhere else you wish to stay. Any questions?"

So, the end product was an expedition to Ember Cave. She wasn’t going to lie, that pair of words sent bolts of electricity up her spine and made her nearly bristle on the spot. Thoughts flashed back to that room, to Cane touching the Sage Stones, his body writhing and contracting and becoming that giant monster. No. She wouldn’t go back there, not even if they paid her a million gold. At least, Cash wasn’t interested in sending them there for now. Their first destination was Blackwood Forest, where Pokemon were said to enter and never return. Honestly, not a story that was hard to believe. Sage Stones were becoming more and more prominent around the globe. Could it be that there were some that had begun to sprout there?

Enya ruffled her feathers. ”Got no questions here, sir,” she peeped. Turning to the rest of her team, she blinked at them curiously. ”How about you lot?”

”Sounds pretty straightforward to me,” Rieka nodded as she looked at the Yamper, Vulpix, Quilava, and other Eevee in excitement. ”Should be easy with this many Pokemon, right?”

Marlow hummed and raised a paw to his chin. His ear flicked idly as he was in deep thought, and his eyes raised to the ceiling. ”Do we know what type of Pokemon roam the forest?”

”Type? It’s a forest, you lousy overthinker,” Enya snapped with a flare of her wings. ”There’s probably going to be like, Grass-types, Water-types, all of that kind of stuff.”

Water-types. I hate Water-types, Lumi shuddered. Shrugging off any resurging memories, she glanced at the Yamper and Vulpix. ”We got coverage for those types, and Enya can help, too–”

”I meant if there are any Sage Stones in the Blackwood Forest.” Marlow affirmed his question. He set his paw down on the table carefully, his gaze sweeping back to Cash. ”I heard there’s a difference between feral Pokemon and Pokemon that have gone berserk because of the Stones. I think we should be prepared for anything. If we aren’t, then a tragedy is bound to happen.”

A silence passed through Lumi’s team. Marlow was oft quiet and overly mellow, but when he spoke his words made one think– most of the time. Other times, Rieka, Enya, and him made her head hurt. Could there be Pokemon that have gone berserk in the Blackwood Forest? she pondered, glancing down at the map again. Or even worse… how about Pokemon that have been corrupted by the Sage Stones, if there are any?

Sora couldn't resist looking towards Lumi at Cash's mention of Ember Cave. He himself was already feeling sick and he couldn't force his body to relax. Despite the fact that he hadn't seen his sister in ten years he was still able to see the force that it took for her not to bristle at the mention of the location that tore their lives apart. At least she hadn't completely forgotten, not how it had seemed when they had been a bit younger.

There wasn't a slew of questions which was a somewhat good sign. Cash's eyes flicked between the members of each team as they spoke, the calm regality of the fire Pokémon somewhat comforting. Sora just kept his mouth shut as the Fishertown team discussed what they thought might be in the forest.

"There's probably bug types in there too, and maybe some dark or ghost if we end up being there at night." Asher's voice was surprisingly contemplative as he chimed in his own thoughts.

Ozzy gave a nod as Lumi said that they had water types covered and shared a toothy grin with his partner. "Those won't be any trouble for us."

They certainly had a lot of types covered with the team that they had. Probably part of the reason why Cash picked the team that he did. As Marlow rephrased his question, mentioning the Sage Stones, Cash gave a slight hum. "From what we know of the Sage Stones from the previous expedition to Ember Cave it is a sudden, violent transformation. A forced evolution if you will." His tail tip flicked as he looked carefully at each and everyone of them, "We aren't sure if there's Sage Stone in the forest, but if you could find evidence of that then that would be incredibly helpful. At the very least we have reports of feral Pokémon, so caution is warranted either way."

Sunspear's team grew quiet as well as they exchanged concerned looks. If they were up against feral Pokémon they would stand a chance depending on how tough they were. The berserk ones though? If even the old team, most of whom had retired after the incident, didn't stand a chance in Ember Cave then how could they hope to make a dent if that was the real cause. They didn't know how the other team worked, the didn't know anything really is seemed, but Cash had given them this job and they were going to do it.

"Well if there's no more questions or concerns," Cash moved towards the door, "Get acquainted and get some rest." With that he strode from the room back into the main hall to settle other assignments.

Mercifully, Asher's voice cut through the silence that had covered the room. The ever chipper Quilava trying to take everyone's mind off the stress, "So...you guys want to go and get some breakfast? Maybe talk strategy, get to know each other a bit before tomorrow?"
