Up all night; I hadn't envisioned him with a day job, but he will be sleeping from after breakfast/dinner until the afternoon.

Oh wow, that research roll! Critical success! When you roll the highest number on a die (Ace!), you get to roll that die again, and again until you stop Acing. Every 4 above the target number is a "Raise". Succeeding with a Raise imparts further benefits (such as dealing extra damage on a combat roll).

Ah, fully forgot about the exploding dice--another roll of 4 brings the total to 10.

EDIT: I'm assuming I did that right? IIRC I get to take either the main die or the extra d6, so presumably only one of those max rolls counts.

Either the wild(extra) die or the trait die, yes. Even though you aced both, it is easier to just pick one when that happens. I don't remember, at this moment, if it matters which you pick; the Wild Die is primarily exclusive to player characters. I often explain it as "Roll with Advantage... Anytime you Roll, that's when!"
