In the wake of an approaching end, the people come together and prepare. Winter will come soon and, with it, the uncertainty of survivalβ€”but until then, they must learn to live together, appreciate and rely on each other, and persevere through...
T H E Q U I E T Y E A R

The Quiet Year is, at its heart, a map-making game, but beyond that, it's a game about community and the bonds that people forge over a time spent together. It's about the making of history, however fleeting and forgotten it may become. It's about living, and the end of it.

In this game, we, the players, are not just the community, but also god-like scientists, watching from above as the community attempts to rebuild after the collapse of civilization. We decide the fates of all in our purview, witness the rise and fall that comes from attempts to thrive, and overall determine how far our little civilization has come before the end.

The game takes place over four seasons, represented by the four suits in a deck of playing cards:
  • Hearts - Spring
  • Diamonds - Summer
  • Clubs - Autumn
  • Spades - Winter

52 cards, representing the 52 weeks of a year. And when the King of Spades is drawn, the game is brought to a close, no matter where the community is in their growth.

We'll answer questions about the community, start projects as the community, uncover and gain and lose resources in the process, and, by the end, have a history to leave behind before the eventual arrival of Winter.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

There will be no character sheets for this mini-campaign. There will be characters, but they will be people that you will bring to life in the moment. Perhaps they are people who participate in discussions about the state of the community, perhaps they're people who are answers to questions we must ask ourselves in the process of watching the community grow, but this is all they are. There is no grand plot, no fate by which a protagonist must circumvent to save the world. The world has already been failed. This is about what comes after.

There is no cap on the number of players. This is a collaborative effort, and the more people that join, the more detailed and complex the history can become. I intend for this mini-campaign to be recurring over several Winters, for several communities and peoples to come into existence, flourish, and await the approaching end.

We will be playing a modified version of the Quiet Year, and I'll have more details in the futureβ€”as well as a full explanation of the game's mechanicsβ€”if interest is gathered. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

This is a compelling way of framing aftermath. I’m especially drawn to the idea of history being made quietly and then lost, and to the absence of protagonists in favor of communal memory.

There’s something sobering in watching people try to live well when the end is already accounted for. The emphasis on seasons, accumulation, and inevitability feels well-suited to exploring how meaning survives even when outcomes don’t.

If this does move forward, I’d be interested in taking part.

To be honest, this game can be played with as little as one person, so with even one other person taking interest, it's enough to get the game started.

I'll begin work on the OOC soon. Been swamped with some other stuff. I should have it up within the week.
