ooc: characters may be placed in scene as they please. undead are everywhere and attacking the living. the firbolg guides are the most numerous natives of the fae see and have aided the party in coming here to do something about the pyramid. preferable posting pace is at least once a week. Open to more folk, so apply if you like in direct message to me or the ooc
Time: late afternoon near dusk
Weather: Cold but not freezing

music:

The deeper they pushed into the Fae See the quieter it became, not the natural quiet of watchful animals or still leaves, but a thinning of sound itself as if noise had weight and was being leeched away the closer they came. The trees here grew wrong, trunks bent inward toward a wide crater swallowed by ancient roots and black stone, their bark split and scarred where something vast had fallen long ago. At the center of it all rose the pyramid, its surface a perfect matte black that drank in light, its edges sharp enough to make the eye ache, veins of dull necromantic glow crawling across its face. The firbolg guides would not step closer, their large hands tightening around spears and charms as one finally spoke in a low, strained voice that carried poorly in the dead air. This was the place. The forest had ignored it for centuries. Now it fed it.

The ground shuddered as if answering that admission. A low vibration rolled up through boots and bones alike, teeth faintly buzzing as lines of necromantic conduits along the pyramid’s face brightened, then dimmed, then brightened again in a slow, deliberate rhythm. Roots peeled back from the stone like sinew tearing free, and from the undergrowth came movement. The first corpse lurched into view dragging half a ribcage behind it, followed by another and another as the forest dead answered the call in a great number. Deer stitched with iron bone braces charged mindlessly, eyes long since gone. A firbolg corpse bound together with wire and root staggered forward, jaw hanging loose as necromantic steam hissed from its mouth. They came on in a rush of rot and borrowed motion, lifeforce clawing blindly for anything still alive.

As metal rang out and spells flared from the firbolg guides, the pyramid responded. Stone plates along its lower face ground against one another and began to part, opening not like a door but like a wound forced wide, necromantic vapors spilling out in a choking breath that carried the stench of old graves and hot metal. One of the firbolg screamed as invisible force yanked them off their feet, dragging them screaming across the crater floor toward the opening before vanishing inside with a wet, final sound. The glow along the pyramid surged brighter at once, the vibration intensifying as if pleased, as if fed. The opening held, waiting, and even as the remaining forest dead pressed their attack the message was unmistakable. Whatever this thing was, it was awake now.

Lorien found himself in the middle of the Fae See, following behind a group of firbolg guides as they led the party to their destination. The forest around them were dark, gloomy and silent. However, instead of feeling fear, the boy felt homely and comfortable more so than anything. Places that were dark and silent had a very peaceful and tranquil vibe after all; it was only natural that a previous shut-in like Lorien would enjoy being in such a place.

A few days back, the boy had been looking for yet another mercenary job to take up to build up on his levels in this new foreign world that resembled one of those rpgs he used to play. Making money to earn a living was also on the priority list, which is why he became a mercenary in the first place. That was when he came across this job that involved exploring some pyramid structure in the Fae See. He liked the creepy vibes it was giving off, and since he hadn’t explored the Fae See all that much, perhaps it would be a good opportunity to explore a new area.

As such, he accepted the request and headed on to the place. The employer turned out to be a tiny spider lady resembling… What was it called again? Arachne? Anyway, she seemed small and cute, although just a little creepy. The rest of the party consisted of a holy knight of sorts, a crazy looking elf and a samurai lady. Among them, the holy knight guy seemed the most out of place. He seemed too good to be here… Or perhaps he was biding his time silently, waiting for the right time to exorcise the spider boss? After all, it was not strange for paladins to hunt down necromancers. If such an infighting were to happen, things could be fun, the boy nodded to himself as a slight smile found its way onto his face.

Then, they arrived.

Undead monsters spawned out of nowhere, attacking the firbolgs while the pyramid’s opening tore open like a wound. Admittedly, things were getting scary… but at the same time, very cool. It reminded him of a VR horror game! Lorien didn’t know whether they ought to just ditch the filborgs and enter the pyramid, or to help fend off the undead. He would think that doing the former would be too cruel to their kind guides, so for now, he decided to lend a hand. Besides, he wanted to test out his skills against this new enemy.

“Boss lady, I’m going to see if I can help out.” He told Xune in an emotionless serious tone, taking out his poleaxe and dashing up to a nearby undead before it could reach one of the firbolgs. He swung his poleaxe, sending a wave of darkness out towards the undead. If he couldn’t make it in time, his range would at the very least. [Rend IV]

The black pyramid, how long had followers of the great necromancer sought it? Xune didn't know, but from the records she had read it was in far better condition than she would have expected. It was said that after the great necromancer arrived on this plane and lost a good deal of power he had to relearn the art of magic and that during that time he had been contested by the spirit king. Some records said it was a great battle that had ended with the suit king having to intervene. Other records said it had been the great necromancer and an army of the dead against the spirit king alone. No matter which story was correct or if it was some mix they ended the same with the black pyramid cast down and the great necromancer retreating. Fighting on the front lines had never been a necromancer's place, even one like the great necromancer who had killed worlds and could hold his own. The stories had mentioned a duel between the spirit king and the great necromancer that lasted days with both spell and blade.

Xune had expected the pyramid to be long dead,a ruin devoid of power beyond symbol and knowledge. That it was in one piece and somehow still active was to her a miracle, or perhaps the books she carried that were also anchors for the deity's soul had woken it. The forest around it had been drained and yet it hungered. Xuhe watched as one of the firbolgs was yanked away into the pyramid, had she known it would eat the living she would have brought more. Though she needed to bind it to her will first. If she was right then then the key to doing that would be a sarcophagus deep in the center of the pyramid amid all the chambers within. The pyramid was as much a castle and lab as it was a tomb.

Now they had to deal with the undead that the pyramid was animating. That the pyramid acted seemingly on its own was quite a wonder that what had once been just a tool to channel magic was now perhaps alive in a way. That wonder didn't really deal with the undead, though hopefully the mercenary she had brought would kill a few before being slain. Ryker and Mantis were worth keeping, but a random person she could live without. There was the other mercenary she had as well who was not as swift to act it seemed. Xune debated what she should do if anything, but it would be very helpful if all her forces lived minus the guides. Locals could be sacrificed; it wasn't like Xune had any love for the fae or responsibility toward porte ting then, but she had paid for those mercenaries she should get her money's worth from them.

How to help was the question, Xune didn't think summoning her powerful undead would be worth it here. The 5 simple skeletons she kept around were not the best for fighting, maybe she should work on them more? She could blast the undead with soul flames, but she didn't think that was needed yet. Likely the best play here was to just do as she had in the tomb and guard her allies while they took down her foes.

It seems we will have to fight, hopefully that firbolg stays fresh.” Xune said from her perch upon one of her skeletal Minions. She did know mantis would likely want to eat some of the fresh flesh.

Come you wild souls, come with souls alight and shield me from my foes” Xune chanted staying where she was as a magical circle appeared below her on the hands of the skeleton as she conjured forth the soul fire shields to protect herself, her skeletons, mantis, ryker, Abe, and Loren.

Ryker having recovered fully from his near death since then, he really hasn't spoken, even as he chose to remain amongst his group. Walking the Fae See, his eyes wondered the darker plain they had entered, the trees warped, cursed, rotted was how he saw it. The ground crunched like bone with every step the party took as they neared the pyramid. Witnessing it's opening as well as the rising of the dead, shambled minions of all sorts. Ryker stepped forward, feeling the surge of Xune's barrier being made upon him, he unsheathed his sword. Most of his gear had been either repaired or refurbished, less rusted but still normal steel as that's what he trusted the most as he'd join Lorien running in on right side, his guard forward at an elevated position now as he struck one of the shambling corpses with a cleaving downward strike as the undead closed in, his blade aiming to bite down on weak connections with force.

Some time has passed since Mantis left the tomb of the necromancer. Now she found herself in the Fae See with Xune, Ryker and a bunch of hired rations looking for something. She started to get a bit more used to the aether of this new world. regaining some of her former strength. She also managed to get herself a nice new catalyst trinket so she could use magic. Although what magic was still the question. But she will figure it out.

As they come closer to their target, the forest around them, the weather around them changes. vile and twisted. A normal person would say it looked and felt wrong. Mantis found it intriguing. How tasteful would the person be that conjures such an amount of aether? The maniac could not wait to find out.
Mantis was stalking the group from the shadows. scouting around, making sure no one was going to surprise them.
As they approached the pyramid, Mantis rejoined the group. Upon witnessing the rise of the undead, Mantis let out a disappointed groan. Again with the undead. Although these seem to have at least a bit of meat on their bones. Still, undead meat probably doesn’t taste as good as fresh meat.

The fighting started. Idiots ran in to fight the undead things, and spells were thrown. One of their guides was pulled into the pyramid by some unseen force. Mantis is going to make that thing pay for stealing her food!. Mantis stayed put. Rather than rush in, she took the moment to evaluate the battlefield, picking her prey and the best way to strike them.
{"Xune… can you detect the leader of these rotten? or the catalyst that is summoning them/ the faster we take those out, the sooner we can get this under control with as little food waste…"} The elf said to the Drider as she brandished her weapon in her hand. {"Let me know when you find either of them"}. With that said, Mantis dashed forward towards one of the rushing deer. Facing the thing head-on in some game of chicken. As the two almost seemed to collide Mantis dodged to the side quickly slashing at the beast’s front leg with [evading slash] in an attempt to sever it, crippling the beast so it can no longer pose any real threat. to make sure the deal was done Mantis used the after motion of the slash to launch another [Severing slash] but this time to the beast’s hind leg. Her gaze was still searching around the field to spot the creature that looked like they were in command of the undead.

Lorien’s dark slash tore through the advancing dead, several caught in its path collapsing as shadow ripped apart what little bound them together, bodies breaking and dropping before they could reach the firbolg line and briefly easing the pressure on the guides struggling to hold formation. At the same time, Xune’s magic took hold as blue soulflame shields manifested around the party and her skeletal minions alike, wailing skulls circling as claws and rusted weapons struck only to meet burning resistance instead of flesh. Ryker’s cleaving strike landed, splitting one of the undead through its weakened joints and sending it down in pieces that failed to rise again.

Mantis found no directing intelligence among the attackers, no summoner or commander guiding them, only corpses driven outward by the pyramid, but her target still fell as two of its legs were severed, leaving it thrashing and crawling but of little threat while her eyes swept the battlefield for something worth hunting. The firbolgs fought with grim urgency, shields locking while spears punched through skulls and axes shattered limbs. Others hauling the wounded clear as they worked to keep the undead from overrunning them, more staggered down from the edges of the crater to replace them.

The conduits across the pyramid flared brighter as more undead were cut down, yet those still standing continued to press the firbolg line while cold mist poured from the open entrance and pale shapes drifted outward to replace the fallen. Bound spirits slid across the battlefield and through the defenders, and where one passed through a firbolg his cry died in his throat as color and strength drained from him in an instant, flesh shriveling. He collapsed as a dry husk, and moments later necromantic force surged again as the pyramid seized the emptied body, animating it. The former ally dragged itself upright to stagger forward and join the remaining undead to continue the attack.

The undead seemed to be growing in number and the firbolgs were well being about as useful as Xune might expect. That was to say they were a hindrance as they died and the pyramid raised them as it called forth seemingly everything that had been killed in the ages it had lain here dormant. Mantis seemed not quite to get the situation, there likely wasn't a leader or simple catalyst to stop this, it was likely the pyramid itself with a fragment of the great necromancer's soul and will causing this. With the undead not exactly seeming to have an end to how many times they would get up, they would have to get into the pyramid and take control of it, or shut it off ideally the former. Xune had expected a dormant ruin needing repair, but to have the pyramid active so a great boon, it would even make a great home if they could take it for themselves.

"{ Its the pyramid itself i must get inside}" Xune shouted to her crazy elf while it seemed one of the mercs had run off, well one less person to deal with.

Xune thought for another moment as the others hacked and slashed and she came up with a plan. she just had to clear the field reset everything to zero and they could move in. Xune didn't quite like expending her energy this early in things having saved her strength in the last quest till the end, but it seemed her help was needed. There was the temptation to just run in herself, but that option was stupid. Xune might not value Ryker and Mantis as the more moral people might, but each was useful and if not for them she might have been enthralled by the great necromancer. They were very much worth saving, the new mercenary... well why not she had paid for their services she would damned well get her money's worth.

" OKAY EVERY LISTIEN UP IM GOING TO BLAST THE AREA THEN WE RUN FOR THE ENTRANCE!" She called out that was about the start and end of the plan blast the are book it to the entrance in the pyramid from with the other undead and necrotic mist had emerged and plunge into the depths of it till they reached the core. It was missing a few steps, but they would make it up as they went for sure.

" Vengeful dead, forgotten souls, awakened and burst forth, engulf these lands in fire and death" She chanted the magic circle again appearing below her as the skeletons moved from mental commands. Xune had found this was their greatest use, as a mount to let her focus on her spells while they moved her or took hits meant for her. Still Xune was not trying to exactly be precise with her casting and simply targeted the widest area she could. Was it over kill? yes. but it was fun to let go. she she did the blue green ghost flames erupted blanketing the area with their ghostly power washing over the undead, the group and the firbolgs.

Lorien watched silently as the darkness from his weapon sliced through numerous of the undead in its path. He sighed… Just like that? These foes weren’t strong enough to get him excited. And besides, they were already dead beings. That didn’t make it as fun to kill. On the other hand, there were some very interesting living comrades in the party who seemed more than capable of putting up a good fight. As he had this thought, he observed Mantis and Ryker as they too fought back against the undead in their own styles. He could feel his heart throbbing in excitement, but he shook his head out of it.

“Calm down, Nyx… Now’s not exactly the time for pointless duels.” He whispered to his poleaxe while patting its head gently. They would only waste their precious energies before the quest if they had a mock practice duel right now. Oh, and there was that issue of the pyramid spewing out an endless horde of enemies. Besides, surely there would be more interesting foes up ahead in the pyramid? Maybe one that could drive him to the brink of death? That might be fun.

Now, back to the endless horde… Xune was kind enough to give them barriers each, aiding them in their fight. Meanwhile, Lorien was considering using an area attack this time round, but the issue is that he couldn’t avoid hitting allies in the area of attack yet([Selective] skill), so he had to hold back for the time being. That was when boss spider lady gave her orders. Run to the entrance as she blew the place up, and hopefully they too wouldn't get blown up in the process. The spell she was casting seemed very powerful too… Could probably vaporize him within seconds if it actually hit him. Although to be completely beaten up and destroyed by a tiny cute spider lady, that could also be a fun thing, he nodded to himself.

Anyway putting weird thoughts aside, now that the boss was on the move, he just had to follow orders. Without much emotion showing on his face, he dashed towards the entrance of the pyramid using [Dash], and using [Sense] to sense for any strangeness or signs of an incoming attack.

Ryker proceeded along his eyes locked behind those he was following. Still not talking much as stepped past Mantis, letting remaining bones crush under his feet. Focused more on getting inside as much as Xune but for other reasons, that he may not even fully understand. He was just more stoic than before as he moved behind Xune and her skeletons. Looking at the lines and definition of the pyramid in this wretched place, causing a rise of disgust on his face at the putridness of this ungodly structure.

There was no commander ordering the undead horde. Nor was there a clear, smaller conduit from which the flow of undead was steered. That means in the absence of the logical, the simple must be the truth. Mantis was able to incapacitate her target, leaving the zombie deer squirming on the ground without legs to find footing. Her scan of the field did not bring up any sign of something on the field directing the zombie masses. Then that leaves the pyramid itself as the only logical target to end the never-ending horde itself. Let alone the glowing lines on the bloody thing and the fact that it is spewing out that necrotic mist that seems to bring forth more of the undead was a dead givaway…

{"I FIGURED AS MUCH THAT THE PYRAMID WAS INVOLVED… IF YOU NEED SOME HELP, SAY SO, AND I WILL CUT YOU A PATH!"} The elf yelled back at the Drider. But her services in trying to cut a path for the boss was not needed as the spider had a better plan. Nuke the field with magic and then run for the entrance. a better idea than what Mantis could have provided.

As Xune started casting her spell, Mantis readied herself. And as the blue and green flames of Xune’s spell scorched the undead horde off the field Mantis dashed towards the pyramid without missing a beat Shooting ahead of the rest to reach the entrance as fast as possible. Once she reached the pyramid, Mantis positioned herself in the blind spot right next to the door. Taking her weapon in hand and ready to [blindside] anything that might come out of the entrance before the rest would catch up.

Xune’s soul fire spreads across the pit and temple, consuming most undead and spirits still active in the area and leaving only scattered remnants behind.

Her skeletal minions attempt to rush her toward the entrance but the broken terrain slows them. Loose ground and debris force them to stumble and struggle to keep balance, risking collapse if they continue recklessly without correcting their footing. (They cover about 30ft at a rushed pace. will need to take action to keep them from tumbling if their pace is to be maintained.)

Lorien and Mantis clear the uneven ground with ease, arriving near the entrance without being hindered by the terrain.

As the party closes in, green energy across the pyramid flares again and begins pulling in lingering energies across the battlefield, drawing in remaining soul fire and necromantic residue, putting out the many fires blanketing the field. The effect also seizes Lorien and Mantis due to their proximity, draining a portion of their lifeforce as they approach the entrance. (both must take defense actions to keep their souls) Ryker and Xune remain unaffected, but the skeletal minions shudder as the same necromantic pull strains the magic sustaining them now that they stand within the pit. (aside from falling, the bone men now need to defend themselves from getting snatched by the pyramid)

As Lorien stepped nearer to the pyramid, he suddenly felt a sensation pulling him in and his soul felt like it was being drained as well. “Damn it…” He cursed under his breath. Sure he said he wanted a foe that could drive him to the brink of death, but he had imagined it to be more of a fair honorable battle to the death kinda thing instead of getting sucked into the mouth of a giant living pyramid. That would be lame. But it wasn’t like the pyramid cared all that much about his feelings.

Without a moment to lose, he turned back trying to dodge out of the suction area with his nimble movement and quick speed, using [Dash] once more but with more force this time.

Things of course could not be easy, Xune had not exactly expected the pyramid to be active in the first place, but for it to attack them so instead of spending its fury on the disposable guides was annoying. Though at least the fire aspect of her attack wasn't burning the forest or random animals it seemed, so little mercies. Xune did not want to have to deal with a bunch of pissed off elves or whatever savages would call the see home. The skeletons were, while useful at carrying her not the smoothest ride it seemed and she had to intervene her power controlling them more directly, going from a subconscious thing to a conscious action to make sure those that carried and protected her didn't fall into the ground. She could also feel the pull on her power and found it even more irritating that a mere relic was interfering with things so much. She weaved a few signs and wards to protect her magic that animated the skeletons from being sucked away and causing them to crumple. She really should get some more as replacement carriers. Though getting good physical skeletons was surprisingly hard when you were digging them up yourself or lurking around battle fields. well there were going to be a lot of corpses soon outside so maybe she could restock there. Regardless of that Xune bolstered the defenses of her skeletons, and might have to do so for the others, hopefully they wouldn't have their souls drawn in, that would really set her back in terms of back up plans. With ther skeletons controlled and protect Xuen would continue forward towards the entrance to the pyramid hopefully the effects would die out soon and they could explore without trying to drain them every step.

Actions
1. control skeletons to correct their footing to keep moving
2. ward skeletons so their magic isn't drained.

Ryker stuck close to the skeletons, as he faced the pyramid. His eyes tracing the stones' linings, his gaze following each segment for any further intrusions keeping his sword ready as he finally spoke as it seemed they got closer to the entrance. "So, lovely miss, we're locating another tome? This feels like it'll be a longer spectacle than the before. Especially with this resistance being displayed so far."

Mantis reached the entrance of the pyramid without any problems. She had positioned herself in the blind spot of the opening, ready to ambush anyone who wanted to leave while the rest of the group was still catching up. But then something happened. The pyramid started to emit a green glow that was drawing in all the magical residue from the field.
The pull also tried to take hold of Mantis. But the moment she noticed the powers grasping for her soul, the elf kicked off the side of the pyramid using [Dash] to speed away from it until its influence on her was no more.

"How annoying" Mantis thought as she looked back at the pyramid. How were they going to enter the thing if it tries to pull out their souls when they get close to it?
When Xune and her skelebros caught up to her, Mantis matched their pace. {"Hey boss? Any ideas how we can get inside?"} Mantis said as she ran beside the drider.

Lorien and Mantis successfully retreat far enough to escape the pyramid’s drain and preserves their souls without further loss.

Xune keeps full control over her skeletons. Her corrections and wards prevent them from stumbling or losing their animating force despite the unstable terrain and necromantic pull.

The firbolgs mostly scatter. Only a handful remained. Those who rushed the entrance after the battlefield was cleared were struck by the soul drain of the pyramid and collapsed as their lifeforce was torn from them.

When Xune and her party moved back within close range of the entrance, the soul drain effect could be felt again and affected all of them except Lorien who had retreated that much further back.

At the same moment, new undead emerge from the pyramid. These were not zombies or spirits. Their bodies were reinforced and etched with patterns of blue green soul flame similar to Xune’s magic, but controlled and stable. The fire did not consume them. They advanced outward in formation. They were far fewer in number than the waves of before but each one was garbed in black armor and equipped with glowing weapons radiating soul flame.

Two spear bearers stepped forward and thrust toward Mantis, their weapons extending arcs of burning soul fire beyond the physical reach of the blades. A towering figure with a greatsword advanced on Ryker and brought the weapon down in a heavy strike wreathed in blue flame. Another raises its hand toward Xune and her skeletons and releases an area surge of what seemed like soul fire at the warding Xune was maintaining on her skeletons.

Things were not going well and it seemed that the pyramid was not going to just let them go in, so how did they do it? it seemed Xune needed more time to think, more time to perhaps weave wards or something to deal with the pyramid and its many defenders. She had expected it to just have a few corpses to work with but those coming out were much more than she expected and more than the others could likely endure. Not to mention she was still recovering from the large spells she had been employing, so they could not stay. It was annoying to be so close to the relic she desired and be forced to abandon it because it seemed to counter whatever she did. the barriers were sadly gone and now the protection that was afforded by them was gone as well. This whole thing was becoming a headache, it almost made Xune want to go seek out a few more of the books and see if any of those would give her a key to this place.

One of the undead was coming at her or rather her skeletons, it was annoying to have to deal with it. " EVERYONE RETREAT!" She called out willing her skeletons to move once more this time away from the pyramid while she countered the undeads assault on her wards, while it was no great loss if the skeletons should fall, it would be another annoyance

actions
1. have skeletons retreat away from the pyramid
2. focus on keeping the wards on her skeletons up so they don't have their energy sucked away.

Seeing how the rest of the team was getting their soul drained as they too approached the entrance, Lorien clicked his tongue. They were getting nowhere with this. So they couldn’t enter the entrance directly… Then what were they supposed to do here exactly? The firbolgs brought them to this very entrance but it wasn’t very welcoming. The pyramid was still spewing out more undead that seemed stronger than the ones they fought outside so far, being reinforced by soul flames.

Meanwhile only a handful of the firbolgs remained, most having scattered off or gotten their life drained by the pyramid. It was unfortunate… He did try to save them as best as he could, but most of them ended up dying anyway. What to do, what to do… the boy thought to himself.

His eyes lit up as he thought of an idea. Well, it was probably a stupid idea, but it was an idea regardless. “Hey boss lady! I got an idea. If this pyramid likes absorbing energies so much, why don’t we pump in even more energy right into its mouth?” He called out to Xune. He then dashed closer to the entrance and slashed the air in front of him using [Rend], sending darkness deep into the mouth/entrance of the pyramid for an area blast inside of it. After he was done with his stunt, he used [Dash] to turn back and escape from the soul draining in case his plan had failed.
