The examination of the pylon bore its fruits. Alicia noticed the magical pattern that runs through the pylon "how remarkable. a multi-layered runic conduit that spans around in its respective ring. Although it does not directly seem to control the constructs, which is a shame, it does seem to interact with them in some beneficial way" Alicia was geeking out over the pylon’s magical workings. Twinkles were there in the eyes of the witch.

"What is this?" Alicia noticed the threads in the enchantment and the sigils resonating with them. "I can work with this. If my theory is correct, I can use these glyphs to disrupt the pylons’ output, maybe even disabling them… but how…" Alicia thought for a moment. She did not have the necessary knowledge or the time to figure out how to control the glyphs. "To think I have to resort to such an unscholarly method… but it is the only way I can think to produce results in the timeframe given… such a bother" she thought inwardly, sighing as she opened her palm and aimed it at the glyphs at the base of the pylon. She concentrated on the sigils, trying to get the rhythm in which they flared up as she gathered aether in the palm of her hand. "The power flows in rhythm, like a heartbeat, pulsing. eb and flow. It provides enchantments to these constructs… if I apply a jolt of pure aether to this flow at the right moment, I might be able to trigger an overload, disabling the system and maybe open it up to new input by me… This might temporarily open a window of reprieve... but a moment is all we need to turn the tide."

Alicia closed her eyes and adjusted her breathing to fall in line with the pulse of the pylon. "Find the moment… and…Unleash” Alicia pushed her hand on the sigils at the base of the pylon, the moment they flared up, unleashing the build-up aethereal energy into the conduit at the peak of its output in an attempt to overload the system.
"Strike now before the system resets" Alicia signalled Sa’saori as she stood up and moved towards Guardian four. As she moved, Alicia prepared to cast her magic. "Begone…" Alicia slammed her hand against the construct's chest and cast [Repel]. The construct felt a sudden pull of gravity pushing it away from the witch. Alicia gasped for air. She hoped this test would end soon, as it was already way too much exercise for one day.

Resilient bastards these fleshless. Mantis’s attacks weren’t able to cause any damage by the looks of it. Even worse was that those bloodless bone heaps were able to put in a solid hit on the elf. Mantis was thrown back over the plateau, coming to a grinding halt. Bloodied and beaten, the warrior dropped to a knee. {"As if I didn’t hate you fleshless abomination enough already"} blood started to visibly crawl beneath Mantis’s skin as her body started to regenerate. {"but that is hardly enough to take me down"} Mantis rose to her feet.

"My steel is not effective against these bastards… how to take them on?" She contemplated her next move. Maybe Xune could blast them with her blue flames. But that spider has gotten herself bound by chains.
Mantis suddenly had an idea. These fleshless came when Mantis struck one of the pylons. So if they, or maybe even one, were destroyed, these fleshless will stop functioning. And as the chains that held Xune also came from the pylons, it will be like taking down two birds with one stone. But there was one problem. Mantis doesn’t really have the power to destroy such a construction. The fleshless could probably. They did pack quite a punch. So that means she needed to lure them to attack a pylon.

{"YO BRAINDEAD BONE FREAKS! Come and try me!"} Mantis yelled mockingly, making a taunting gesture to the wardens trying to provoke one to come closer to her, which one did. One of the wardens came and threw a powerful punch towards the elven warrior. {"moron"} Mantis jumped up at the last moment to dodge the punch. Planting her foot on the warden's now extended fist, Mantis continued to use the warden as a [stepping bone] to jump high enough that she could get up on top of the nearest pylon. {"Now to get to business"} Mantis squatted down and swung her bladed weapon downwards towards the source of one of the chains that held Xune captive in an attempt to cut it down before she returned her attention to the warden.

{"It’s over now. i got the high ground"} She said mockingly while looking down on the bone construct with a cocky grin.
Her attention was grabbed when the walls opened, and various expeditioners entered the room {"Ah, good! Fresh meat, I was starting to get hungry}" She mused, licking her lips as her attention returned to the warden.

Noelle’s shield trick kept her safe from collision with any of the environmental hazards. Sadly, Aedri’s light beams hit her, knocking her into a trance state. The water of her shield started to shift to encase Noelle in a cocoon of water. The water shimmered as Noelle started to transform. Her legs turned into a fishtail. But something was off with this.
Noelle remained unmoved with her eyes closed as her barrier and Aedri’s light slowly healed her. Yet the mermaid didn’t seem to move.

Moments went by without change when suddenly the magical aura around Noelle seemed to shift. And did she suddenly grow bigger, or was that just a trick of the light on the shield in combination with the fact that her tail obviously would be a bit longer than her regular legs.
Another moment passed, and something was happening. Noelle’s mouth shifted. Those who could notice might see she had a faint smirk on her lips. Then, a second later, one of her eyes shot open. A yellow eye turned to look straight towards Aedrianna before Noelle softly chuckled.
"How ironic… the one you gave everything to protect. To then see turn on you and hurt you so badly…" Noelle focussed herself on the descent "Now that I have the oppertunity… let’s see what fun awaits down there"

The sonic blast decimated the hive bugs within range while sparing most other creatures and things. Or at least not worse harm due to her loud screaming. They still were in great peril to begin with. So if anyone were put in any more peril due to uncontrolled magical shenanigans, that can all be blamed on Nova The hole.

Noelle had no time to relish in her destruction as Aedri’s stray non-directional lasers were now causing havoc. "EEK!!" Noelle exclaimed as she hurriedly moved around, grazing the laser beams like a true Touhou protagonist. "That was a close one" Noelle stabilised herself "You okay?" She yelled towards Aedrianna.
In the meantime, multiple other people have made their presence known. No one, Noelle could remember having been in the town square when the hole appeared. So where did all these people come from? Among them was this girl with white drill-shaped hair. Did she make these holes with those drills? No, that is not possible. But there was something about her. As if Noelle had met her before. Well, one thing is for sure. Lorelei didn’t like the sight of this girl.
But none of this is of any importance at this moment because everyone had something bigger to worry about… the stone spires they were coursing to at high speed.

Noelle had to think fast about how to ensure she ended up in a safe position. "Here goes nothing" She clutched her harp as she aligned herself vertically and started spinning around her vertical axis. With the strum of her finger, Noelle drew in the ambient moisture, forming a watery shield around her in the shape of a cone, twisting around like a whirlpool. The plan was that the water shield would absorb the blow if she were to hit one of the spires, and due to the shield's angled form and her spinning movement, when it hits the spire, it would cushion the blow and divert her momentum away from it, keeping Noelle safe. It was a bit of a Hail Mary. But better to try something than to end up skewered on the rocks.

The strike of Mantis’s weapon reverberated through the structure. {"You don’t like that, eh!?... GOOD!"} the elf said with cruel delight. This place was making it unpleasant for her, so she was going to make her presence as uncomfortable as possible for it.

The energy passed through the seams, and the pyramid summoned four bone creations twice her size to try and stop them from messing with the dias. How utterly foolish. Mantis started cackling as she turned towards the approaching constructs with weapon in hand. {"And so the dance continues… but no matter. I will exterminate any of the useless fleshless that are sent my way. SO LET’S HAVE SOME FUN!!"} With a mad grin on her lips, Mantis dashed towards the construct closest to her, completely ignoring Bones’s attempt at being a heroic martyr.
Mantis jumped and placed her blade against the neck of the first skeleton. Using the momentum she swung herself around the skeleton, attempting to slice off its head with [Headslicer]. She threw a glance at Bones "dumb fleshless. no steal, hunter prey" She said before turning to her next target and unleashing [toppling strike] a series of strikes at the legs as well as the sides of the target, attempting to disrupt their balance and topple to the ground. In the meantime Xune could do whatever she wanted to do while Mantis kept the pyramid’s security entertained.

It’s been about a month now since the events at the fair in the duchy. Noelle found herself wandering the world together with this girl named Aedrianna. Although her memories told her she had never met this girl before. Something inside the mermaid said that she should stay close to her. And it was not the other voice, although it does seem to agree that staying close to the blonde girl was going to lead to some "Interesting" things to come. Although the tone of it did leave Noelle worried about what the voice meant by it.

This has brought them to where this story starts. A marketplace in one of Ryken’s small cities. The two were walking through the market. Browsing around and having a good time. Noelle had gotten slightly peckish, so she offered to get some snacks for the two of them. But really, Noelle just wanted some sweet cinnamon rolls she saw at one of the stalls earlier. But as she stepped away to get the snacks. That was when it happened. A sudden tremor, and then the light of day started to fade as the market collapsed into a giant hole.

The wind was rushing as Noelle fell down the hole. Debris from the world above is falling all around her. "w̵a̷k̸e̶ ̵u̷p̵ ̴d̶a̶r̶l̸i̴n̴g̷" Noelle snapped to reality, realising the situation she was in. She was able to stabilise her positioning dodging some pieces of debris "N̵o̶ ̶t̶i̷m̸e̸ ̵t̴o̸ ̵e̴n̴j̷o̸y̸ ̴t̸h̷e̷ ̵v̵i̵e̸w̵.̴ ̸w̷e̸ ̷g̴o̶t̴ ̷c̷o̴m̶p̸a̷n̶y̵" The voice suddenly announced. Sudden flashes of hardened chitin shot through the shaft. A quick examination Noelle was able to locate the source. With everything that had fallen from the surface, several hive bugs had also joined the freefall and were attacking things. "Shit! Shit! This is not good. The bugs didn’t seem to have noticed Noelle yet. But it was only a matter of time until they did. She carefully pulled her instrument from her sack. A quick glance down revealed that there was no bottom in sight of this well yet. That meant she could fully focus on repelling the bugs for the time being. She was ready to cast a spell until she heard a familiar voice carried in the wind calling out her name. "MISS!?" Noelle yelled out and frantically looked around for Aedrianna. She quickly spotted the girl nearby gathering magical energy in her fingers and firing it towards the bugs. "MISS!!" Noelle adjusted her posture to move her towards her friend as one would move through water. Once she reached Aedrianna, Noelle placed her hands on Aedri’s shoulder "Calm down! It’s okay… i’m here"
Noelle let go of Aedri’s shoulder and floats a little bit up, taking her harp in hand "Miss… quick! Cover your ears. This might hurt" She said before she screamed, unleashing [Bug repelling sonic blast] a giant wave of high-pitched sound was blasted into the shaft aimed to blast the bugs in a fifty-foot radius around her out of the air.
"That… That should do it for now" Noelle said catching her breath. She hoped this would avert the threat of the hive bugs for the time being.

Alicia’s concerns were confirmed. This was a trial by combat. But even if this was a test she was wholly unprepared for, Alicia did not retreat. She just stood where she was after she entered the room, on the outer circle.
She was surprised to hear Sa’Saori’s speculation on the test and the caution coming with it. Alicia admits that a certain level of caution was advised. But there was something as too much caution.

The arena lit up, and a female voice rang out from the arena walls, announcing the parameters for combat. When the voice finished, the construct started moving slowly, advancing on the duo. Alicia narrowed her eyes as she started to think about what she should do now. But when she heard Adelhein’s comment, her eyes turned to a combination of annoyance and boredom. "How incredible barbarian" This was the first time Adelhein would hear Alicia’s voice "Asuming combat skill… Scholars have studied and mastered magic without having seen combat even once… “combat” is not what is being tested then" Alicia looked up to the sky as if she was looking to something or someone. "Combat is merely the situation, a state of chaos. A state unfamiliar to a person can be approached in one of two ways. through sheer power… or through wits. observation and understanding. knowledge of strengths and weaknesses, planning and execution, control under pressure". She abruptly disconnected her telepathic connection to Adelhein and focused on the test at hand.

"SaSa, listen up. We need to work together on this…" She said to her partner telepathically "Their plan looks to be to engage in direct combat with the outer ones, who are likely going to provide some sort of support…" Alicia’s eyes scanned the room.
"I don’t think our chances are great if we engage them head-on. Although I might be able to hold my own against one maybe, I’m not a fighter." Alicia said. Besides her not believing herself to be an actual fighter, the two were also outnumbered two to one by the constructs. That was when Alica noticed the light of the pylons becoming brighter anytime one of the guardians passed by it. That made Alicia think "If I’m correct, then we might be able to take the constructs out without having to directly fight them… Sasa, cover me! I’m going to have a look at one of those pylons. These things are being controlled by something. Maybe the pylons are the antenna. If we disable them, then maybe those things will stop working, and we win." She said before Alicia started moving to the closest pylon to her and started to examine it to see if she could figure out how they worked and maybe shut off completely.

All ways out have now been sealed. There was no other option than to finish the mission now and kill this building from the inside. Although the how is still a mystery, as the place looks to be all solid with no crevices indicating soft tissue beneath where sharp objects can be inserted.
Then there is also that new independent skeleton that claimed to be stuck in this place. Or they were a creation of this place. So far, the pyramid had produced an overwhelming amount of fleshless in its control, so the chance of this one being another of the pyramid's creations was highly likely.

Mantis had stayed still for the moment to let things play out, ready to intervene where needed. She was the only one who still had the honour to do so, as the other two of their party decided to peace out and go to sit in Xune’s pocket dimension.

The pyramid did not wait to not stop being an absolute nuisance. Mantis’s blood writhed beneath her skin as the pyramid kept up with the soul-sucking. That was when all turned red before her eyes. She was so done with the pyramids' shenanigans! If it can’t be a good host for its guests, then Mantis might as well try to hurt it back. The elf followed one of the conduits and dashed towards the dais with the pylons with weapon in hand.
She jumped onto the dais and ran towards one of the pylons. The others might want to examine and stare at the plateau. Mantis had no time for that. The energy seems to lead to these pylons, so they must be important. And if she could destroy one or ultimately all of them, the pyramid might stop having such a hostile environment. Anyway, she was going to attack one of the pillars before the pyramid had a chance to try to stop her. As she came in range, Mantis swung her blade at the pillar before making a small jump backwards away from the pillar to see what her strike would do to the structure.

Alicia and Sa’saori’s efforts produced the results they desired as the crystal was lowered suddenly, all the lights aligning in the pattern necessary to light up all the hidden glyphs. The whole room lit up, the whole room and then, with a soft chime, the interlocking plates barring the door slid open. "The path is open. Let us go to the next test" With those words, Alicia calmly walked towards the open door and into the next area.

In the narrow corridor that connected the two areas, Alicia curiously looked around through the dark outside the crystal corridor. As if hoping to find something. But alas, there was nothing but a dark void out there.

And so the group arrived at the second testing chamber. As she entered the room, Alicia quickly noticed the layout. raised rings, shallow canals of light and the four rune-etched constructs. It almost looked like a duelling arena. "Please don’t tell me…" the witch felt a bit uneased. Was this going to be a combat test? That would be unfortunate, as Alicia doesn’t see herself as a combatant.

When the group entered the room, the runes on the constructs flared up, giving life to the automatas. "Be careful. We don’t know what the purpose of those puppets is yet… but if it’s combat, then it’s all up to you". She messaged Sa'saori while scanning the room with her eyes for any item of interest, while keeping an eye on what the constructs were doing. Although she still wore the cold, unmoving look on her face, her stance had become a bit more cautious, signalling her unease with the situation.

Mantis tried to carefully manoeuvre through the hall. But sadly, that didn’t get far. The magic lines were far more obscure than originally anticipated, and soon she stepped on one of the invisible triggers. "Well fuck this then" The psycho thought as she shifted her footing and launched herself forward in an [agile dash] before the spikes could shoot up. She tried dealing with this with finesse. But this heap of stupid bricks just had to do it the hard way.

Mantis was so done with this. She was going to find whatever this thing has for a brain, heart or whatever can give it the experience of pain when she violently inserted sharp metal objects and go absolute ham on it. If it’s fleshy bits, she might even just eat it while it is still alive, to just further the torment. But one thing is for sure. If it were up to her and within her capabilities, Mantis would make this thing experience a fate worse than death when she gets her hands on certain parts!
