@Assallya: I thought that was also the Boatswain's job. However, the Sailing Captain still sets sails, but other crew members work on maintaining and changing them upon orders. I can add a helmsman position that is separate from the sailing master. Thank you for informing me!

@Saarebas: Would you like to stay as Sailing master, or work as the helmsman?

Uh I'd rather be a helmsmen, namely because I'm still in the dark on the Sailing Master

According to the link you sent:

"Originally, on board sailing ships the boatswain was in charge of a ship's anchors, cordage, colours, deck crew and the ship's boats. The boatswain would also be in charge of the rigging while the ship was in dock."

Thus, generally a boatswain or bo'sun, is in charge of the deck and cargo areas while the Master of Sail is in charge of the sails above. I rather suspect that the pair work in concert since they share the same common pool of hands.

@Assallya: Correct me if I'm wrong; I'm not the most astute person when it comes to sailing. The boatswain deals with the rigging down on the deck while the sailing master and his hands will work on the lines up top the masts to help set sails.

-I'm excited to see your CS.

-On another note, I always want to say hull instead of deck.

No. The bo'sun is only responsible for the rigging while in port, when it's all rolled up tight against the yardarms. He is in charge of the supplies, the longboats, ensuring the deck is clean and things in their place, the anchor, running the flag up the pole and other minor issues.

The master of sail is responsible for the angle of the jib, spanker, foremast, mainmast and mizzenmast. Generally, if I remember correctly, it has been ages since I did my reading, the jib and spanker are used to bounce wind into the other masts. See, if the wind is coming from directly behind the boat only one set of sails would fill with wind and block the others. By angling the vessel several degrees to port or starboard they could catch more wind, and through the use of the taut jib and spanker, bounce wind into the other sails.

It's a lot of work and requires a great deal of concentration. Every time the wind shifts you need to send sailors scurrying like ants to adjust every aspect of the sails. He or she can't do much else and maintain optimum speed.

@Assallya: Thank you again! I know some of the general functions, but I still get mixed up over how the duties would be delegated.

Enh, it's a roleplay. If we don't get it exactly right- who cares! Though, it is nice to learn stuff while role-playing.

@Assallya: Agreed, I love to learn about historical facts. Plus, a sense of realism makes things more enjoyable.
