No one is nibbling on my Alamo Scouts RP and I am caught up with Blood Debt. I should have time to work on a CS for this one tomorrow. I may have to ask you 1000 questions, HeySeuss. Or I'll just read the Wiki.

I've been playing BT since I was a kid, I can answer questions. Since we already have two Lyrans, if you'd like to take a House Davion member, that'd round us out. They have a strong cavalier/military tradition, but often less resources to make do with. Most Davion worlds are very agrarian, but they have a strong military heritage that really starts with the Kentares massacre.

British, in a sense. Very big on combined arms, while as the Lyrans have a lot of resources but a track record of preferring politically connected officers. You can definitely hit me up with questions and I can answer.

Definitely approved. I need to do a shift at Sur La Table today, and then I'll be back to do that first post.

I have read over the character sheets and would like to post my character's perceptions of them.

Ansgar Staudinger is a friend to Nero Reynard. Due to the history of the Staudinger family, Nero values Ansgar's friendship strongly. Nero understands, Ansgar's propensity for long range, indirect fire support. As a more, in your face up close and personal fighter, Nero appreciates the value of having the support from Indirect fire to help weight a situation in his favor. He would never comment on the way Ansgar dresses. He has on occasion opted to dress fashionably well in order to make his friend feel comfortable around him. (I like Ansgar Staudinger. Great job with this character!)

Peter Mattlov, who attended NAIS is someone Nero is just meeting for the first time. The Mattlov name is one that registers recognition with the 3rd Crucis Lancers from his studies of Military History. He has read accounts of Fatima Mohammed Mattlov in action with the Crucis Lancers and expects similar feats from her offspring. The fact that he comes from a military family suits well with Nero. (For future note in our RP, Peter's desire to speak his mind may go one of two ways. If Nero agrees with Peter's comments, he will appreciate his input. If not, he will grow weary rapidly; especially if the need for rapid action does not permit the opportunity for lengthy planning. Good character, could lead to future controversy on a personal level.)

Aveline Lott, as a self imposed outcast, she has placed a cloak around herself that does not allow others inside, except under extreme situations. Nero is a pensive observer. He has witnessed her piloting skills first hand and appreciates them greatly. Nero has the utmost respect for her abilities in the cockpit of a BattleMech. He hopes he can live up to her standards. With regards to her inability to socialize with the other nobles in both the Lyran and Federated Suns realms, he questions her. He has attempted to engage her on a few occasions, but Nero has always gotten the impression she preferred to be left alone. With that notion communicated, he has done that. As a result, although he is familiar with her abilities, he does not know her very well. (I do like this character. It gives us a place to grow. Hopefully, she will be accepted into the Lance and thereby receive that level of social acceptance she subconsciously desires.)

Also, a couple assumptions; Mechs have stronger comm systems than other vehicle types and are useful links to the rest of a planet's comms in a situation where satellite systems are down. There are vehicles that provide command and control functions way better than a mech not designed for it (though Phoenix Hawks and Wolverines have comm and sensor systems designed for it -- actually, they have the same systems down to make and model) but mechs usually are doing that job in almost every situation, especially at a lance level.

Also assuming a degree of data synchronicity among lances. That's more of a house rule, but the way I see it, they share some targets, though this is vulnerable to a good ECM system.

Thirdly, the mechs carry UAV's and neurohelmets can be tuned to work better with a given class of weapons -- processing power devoted to laser, ballistic or missile weapon optimization.

SRM's, LRM's and AC's can be loaded with special munitions, except for UAC's whose chambers are designed for rapid feed and require, lest reliability suffer even further on rapid fire, standard munitions. We are going to tweak the timeline to admit these munitions into play for versatility and fun.

When I was reading up on the Wolverine, I did get the indication that the Wolverine would be up front gathering intelligence on Friendly, Foe, Identification (FFI) and then share that information with the other Mechs in the unit. You appear to confirm that for me.

In a sense, yes, it is a command mech for recon lances. However, the Cicada is extremely fast. The lance has a Catapult, but everything else in there is a pretty fast mover. That Wolverine can shift it in bursts, but the MASC system can be dangerous to use too long. The Phoenix Hawk is also fast and has jump jets, which also makes it a premiere recon unit. The Cicada lacks those, but is designed with raw ground speed in mind. The Catapult is also a jumper, which makes it useful for navigating terrain.

So in this lance, realistically, Mattlov has the least firepower, Staudinger has the most. Reynard is also high up in the firepower department, and Lott actually has the most longevity, as her weaponry is predominantly energy. In a prolonged engagement, her mech's value shoots up.

Basically, we have a lance designed for heavy recon work; enough firepower to get out of jams and plug gaps in a battle line. A good mobile reserve with enough punch to make a difference but the staying power is not so much there. Medium lances like this are the backbone of most regiments, a mix of weight classes, ranging from a heavier light or lighter medium to a lighter heavy.

Providing a handy lance reference now:
  • Lott: Phoenix Hawk 1b "Special" (45t, 90kph max speed) - A Star League era design that can now be produced once more. Referred to as the Phoenix Hawk "Special," the 1b was introduced in 2760 for the Star League's Royal units. It utilized an XL Engine as well as Endo Steel for its chassis, which allowed the designers to upgrade its weaponry. The pistol-like laser was upgraded to an ER PPC, while a swivel-mounted ER Large Laser found its way onto the right torso. Replacing the ten standard heat sinks with Double heat sinks kept these high-heat weapons from overwhelming the 'Mech. A Guardian ECM Suite in the center torso improved the 1b's defense, while moving the machine gun ammunition to the left torso and adding CASE virtually ensured that the MechWarrior would survive an ammunition explosion.
  • Staudinger: Catapult-C4C (65t, 60kph max speed) - An upgrade to the original C4 model, conventional C4C units have replaced their conventional engines with an extralight model, their two small lasers with a light pulse laser, heavy laser and beagle probe thanks to the freed up tonnage from the upgraded engine, while the LRM-15's have been upgraded to LRM-20's with twice as much ammo than the old LRM-15's carried. This increased its overall performance at long range by notable degrees, despite its weakened close combat capabilities. The Staudinger family could not leave well enough alone, and have further modified the C4C and have taken to referring to it as the C4S, instead.

C4S Modifications - Ditching the heavy laser completely, the freed up weight utilizes an installed Artemis IV Targeting system for the LRM-20's. This increases direct fire accuracy by a notable margin, coupled with the Beagle Active Probe from the conventional C4C model, makes a theoretically terrifying hunter-killer model of the Catapult, able to pick out targets through active electronics interference at long range, and provide improved munitions fired to munitions effective ratio. The most glaring downside to the C4S variant the Staudinger family is attempting to pioneer is its relatively laughable close range defenses of a solitary light pulse laser. However, the Catapult did receive the retrofit upgrade from the Anderson Propulsion 21 jumpjets, known for their tendency to break down suddenly and overheat the Mech due to poor venting, to the 25 series which addressed these deficiencies.
  • Mattlov: Cicada-3M (40t, 120kph max speed) - This particular one made its way from Solaris to NAIS where it has since been put through its paces repeatedly. This particular one has an endo-steel structure and adds a Beagle Active Probe and a half-ton of UAC ammunition.
  • Reynard: Wolverine-7D (55t, 80kph/108kph (MASC) max speed) - The 7D variant of the Wolverine is a major upgrade to the design introduced in 3050 by the Federated Suns' new Nanking factory. The standard engine on the 'Mech was replaced with a Nissan 275 XL version and the armor has been upgraded to Kallon Unity Weave Ferro-Fibrous material with an extra half-ton added. To increase the Wolverine's speed, MASC has been added, allowing it to move up to 108 km/h in bursts. Finally, the weapons payload has been upgraded as well. The autocannon has been upgraded to a General Motors Nova-5 Ultra Autocannon/5 and the medium laser is now a Sutel Precision Line Medium Pulse Laser. The design retains its jumping capability, as well as the SRM-6, although CASE now protects the SRM reloads.
