Sabine reached for Peiter's hand and held it while looking at it. She gently ran her thumb over his hand repeatedly while she responded. "I know that you wanted to be a warrior. I know it is hard." Sabine sighed and leaned her head on Peiter's shoulder. "I can say that you do not need two arms to be a mage. You could learn magic some more if you like." Sabine tried not to sound too optimistic in case it was not Peiter's wish. "If you become good enough, you can learn telekinesis. You can move anything with that, with enough practice."

Gallus stared at Ri'vashi with contemplation for a few moments. It was a fair dilemma, and a decision he was glad not to have to make. Still, working out someone else's problems was more cathartic than avoiding his own.

With a deep breath through his nose, Gallus spoke up. "Well, both sides have merit. But, I wonder...perhaps you might try looking at it, not with which path you have more control, but where you believe you can do the most good." Gallus raised his fingers from his knee. "You're the better judge of your abilities than I, even if I believe Meesei is right and you're the best general we have. What do you think?"

"Yeah, I suppose you're right." Peiter answered, though his tone still seemed depressed, and overall, not entirely convinced. He stopped the conversation for a while by pulling Sabine into a kiss, which he drew out for quite a while. Though, even with the distraction, Peiter still could not escape his own self-doubt. "Of course, I haven't really been that good of a mage so far. I don't think I have the talent for it. Maybe I can learn a few helpful tricks, but I'm not expecting much."

---

Ri'vashi straightened up her posture, answering without hesitation. "From Bruma, Ri'vashi would be able to direct far more soldiers. She would have more resources, more information, more influence. She could send information to other clans more quickly, and in that position, they would be far more likely to follow her instructions. There is no question that Ri'vashi could do more good by accepting the Champion's offer. It is just...she has to leave everything she knows."

After a pause, Ri'vashi shifted uncomfortably, her eyes glancing up and down Gallus' form. "And Ri'vashi does have...other thoughts. She was not expecting we would be...returning to the same clan together."

Even though it was not the most romantic of moments, Sabine kissed Peiter back, if only to help him feel better. Peiter's words afterwards caused Sabine to huff out of her nose and tilt her head to one side away from Peiter while looking at him. "Maybe that is the problem. Not that you are not good at magic yet, but that you do not expect you can be." Sabine brought Peiter's hand between both of hers. "You have been putting yourself down a lot. You do not need to. I think it is making you feel worse."

Gallus took in a short breath. Ri'vashi's eyes told everything that her words didn't say. "Ah." He nodded deeply and looked around at the floor surrounding him, almost as uncomfortably as Ri'vashi was. "I was wondering if you had that night on your mind." Gallus scratched at the back of his head. "You didn't say anything about it since then, so I didn't really know." He showed a hand. "Look, if you're uncomfortable with it, we can just stay as good friends. I have been past enough relationships to treat it that way...gods, I'm that way with Uthri." Gallus was perhaps projecting too much of his own thoughts, but his nervousness spoke of conflict. "I mean, it was your first time, right? That doesn't mean we're suddenly married or anything."

Peiter actually started to give something of a chuckle. "I really don't think I can feel any worse, honestly." He commented, followed quickly by another sigh. There was another long pause from him, though this time he appeared in deep thought. It was clear that his problems were something that a few words, even from Sabine, was not going to solve. However, his expression did turn at least slightly less downtrodden.

"I know you're right, it's just that none of this is easy for me. I had always considered the possibility of dying in battle, but I really never thought enough on the possibility of being crippled by it. I know I shouldn't be dwelling on this. I feel like I should try to get my mind off of it all. Anything in particular you feel like doing?" Peiter asked.

---

At this point, it was almost impossible for Ri'vashi to maintain eye contact as she spoke. She was rubbing one of her hands over the other nervously, and spoke rather softly. "Well, Ri'vashi is professional. She had responsibilities in the attack, and did not want to fail in her duty. After we started marching again, it...just never seemed like the right time to mention it. You have been stressed, Ri'vashi has been stressed, and..." Her voice trailed off once she realized that she did not know where to go with the thought. It took another few breaths before she was able to continue.

"Ri'vashi had never been in a situation like that. You know she doesn't get close to people very often, and she is always so busy. And, this one has always been afraid that those kinds of feelings could impact her judgment. Cause her to make mistakes in the heat of battle, that sort of thing. That didn't happen during the attack, fortunately. Ri'vashi's training and experience did keep her level-headed. Ri'vashi, well...she liked it. The whole experience. But that makes this one nervous."

Peiter may have had trials ahead of him, but Sabine wasn't going to let him give up hope. The glimmer of hope that he displayed was enough for her for now.

Sabine held her head straight and smiled. "I...feel like teaching you some magic," she said. "We have not had a lesson for a while." Sabine held Peiter's hand up and opened his palm to the sky. "Let us recap from last time..."

Gallus responded in a soft voice as well. "You haven't had much practice with friends, let alone lovers, haven't you, clan leader?" He closed his eyes and bowed and shook his head slowly. "I tease too harshly. Come here."

Gallus shuffled over closer to Ri'vashi and reached a hand up to give her shoulder a comforting rub. "Look, perhaps if it weren't for the wine, we wouldn't be in this predicament in the first place. Now that we've got clear heads, we can decide on what to do. Personally, I think continuing to share a bed is not going to be worth it if it's going to cause you this much distress. Also, this whole journey has given me an opportunity to turn over a new leaf, and I feel like bringing possible drama back home with me is not going to help." He pulled face as he continued, not staying completely serious. "Then again, it does wonders for helping me to relax in the short term." Gallus chuckled through his nose and returned to his previous tone, giving Ri'vashi's shoulder a squeeze. "Look, in the end, it's just mating. It might risk turning into something to throw our lives away for in a fight, but it's not like that now, is it?"

"It's not necessarily causing distress itself, it's just..." Ri'vashi began, but her voice trailed off. She was quite obviously indecisive, and the longer she was silent, the more pressure she felt to give some kind of answer. Eventually, she managed to clear her mind enough that she reasoned that she should just explain her current thoughts. "That night changed Ri'vashi; she cannot deny that. It made her realize some things about herself. Ri'vashi never felt that she needed intimacy like that in her life, and for the most part, that is still true. This one does not think that she needs intimacy. It is something she can live without, and has lived without. Ri'vashi is not some animal with an instinctual need she cannot ignore. But, she does feel that it is something she wants."

Now that she had started speaking, Ri'vashi felt calm enough to actually make eye contact with Gallus. Though, she also moved herself closer to Gallus and placed both her hands on his shoulders. The look in her eyes was intense, and telling of the thoughts within her mind. "Ri'vashi has also come to understand that it is not just physical intimacy she wants, though. She doesn't want to mate, she wants [/i]a[/i] mate." She explained, rubbing her hand down his back. "If that is not something you want, Ri'vashi will have to find someone else."

Gallus could see what was coming his way from at least two sentences before it was said. A part of him was afraid that this was going to happen. Up until that point, he had mostly hung on the idea of a casual relationship since Ri'vashi described it so on the night before the assault. Now, however, his jaw began to clench again.

"Ri'vashi, I..." There was a hint of a second thought that didn't follow through. "...No, I can't." Gallus gently pushed Ri'vashi's arms off his shoulders and looked away sadly. "I just can't do something like that right now. I'm sorry. I know I'm going to regret it if I do." Gallus scrunched his eyes shut and raised one hand. "There's just too much happening right now."

Out of sympathy, Gallus placed a hand on Ri'vashi's knee and peered up at her. "I will say, though, that if a mate is something you want...try not to force it. If you try to make a relationship with someone for the sake of it, you may find yourself in trouble." He brought his hand back to rub his opposite shoulder. "Take it from me, I've made more mistakes than you ever should."

Judging by Ri'vashi's expression, Gallus' answer was not the one she wanted, but she did not try to argue over it. She let out a long, deep breath, then gave a single nod. "Okay. Ri'vashi understands. This was a change for Ri'vashi, she knows. She just had time to think over the last week, and that is what she realized that she wanted. She will just have to try not to be so...unbearably serious all the time and meet someone new. When Ri'vashi joins you all in Bruma, maybe you could introduce her to someone interesting?" She answered.

There was another few moments of hesitation from Ri'vashi before she decided on one last, brief show of affection. Suddenly, she leaned in and gave him a quick kiss. "Thank you." She said, pulling away just as quickly. Slowly, she laid herself back down on her bedroll and stared up at the roof of the tent with her hands resting behind her head. "Before you go...Ri'vashi just has one question. Something she is just curious about. How attractive is Ri'vashi? And why?"

Gallus smiled. "I can think of a few peop-." He stopped to receive the kiss. He gave Ri'vashi a nod at her thanks.

With Ri'vashi laying back, Gallus lifted his knee until his foot was flat on the ground, but he didn't get up. He looked at Ri'vashi's face curiously as she asked her question and settled back to his seat. The corner of his mouth tightened and his eyes flicked across what Ri'vashi's bedroll cover hid. "If you're asking what everyone finds attractive about you, I can't answer that. But me?" Gallus breathed in through his nose and hummed in thought.

If he were honest to the point of cruelty, Gallus would convey that Ri'vashi's appearance wasn't physically attractive to him at all. She was a Khajiit. A huge Khajiit. Muscle-bound and intimidating. Gallus wondered how drunk he had to be to accept her previous advances, but then again, at that point of close physical intimacy, far fewer matters of appearance counted for anything. Even her size was just something to get used to. Gallus spent a moment wondering if he could guess at what Khajiits find attractive in one another, but he didn't want to lie to her.

By the time Gallus had an answer, he had his hand to his chin and was perhaps looking at her in uncomfortable ways. He dipped his head to one side. He spoke flatly, "Well, if you want an answer, I was attracted to you because you have big eyes, you're very endearing when you're out of your depth, and you're very passionate. That's the simple answer." Gallus looked to her face. "If you're thinking about your body, consider that I'm an Imperial who's about half your bulk and had never slept with a Khajiit larger than a Suthay-raht before you. Even with the Suthay-rahts, I was very inebriated." Gallus propped himself up to his knees and leaned forward to prod Ri'vashi on the forehead. He spoke at a low volume while pressing his finger to her head. "I think you're asking me the wrong questions."

Gallus' finger moved up behind Ri'vashi's ears and gave them a soft scratch. He had learned that she tended to perk them up as a reflex when he did that. It would be part of the expression Gallus wanted her to hold. "Give me a smile. Just a subtle one, like you've found out that someone's just given you a gift." Gallus smiled as well to encourage her. "Now repeat after me: I will open myself up to possibilities..."

There was a wait for Ri'vashi to speak the words.

Gallus continued. "I will smile like this when I meet someone new..." Another pause for Ri'vashi to recite. "Hey- keep that expression up, I didn't say you could change it...I will not be afraid of rejection...I will open myself up to possibilities." The repetition was clearly deliberate.

Still on his knees, Gallus sat up straight and extended his arms towards Ri'vashi's face. The smile did make her much more attractive. "And that's how you get yourself a mate. Well done for asking."

Overall, Gallus' answers were not quite what Ri'vashi was expecting. Regardless, she had a good humor about it. When Gallus mentioned her eyes, she intentionally widened them to make them appear even larger than usual. She was not honestly sure why her size was a deterrent for him, but she followed his statements by stretching out her arms and legs so as to appear even taller.

Ri'vashi felt that Gallus' insistence that she smile was strange, but she decided to play along regardless. She repeated his words, though could not stop herself from laughing. "Thank you, Ri'vashi is sure she won't have any problems finding a mate now." She commented, somewhat sarcastically. At the same time, she placed a hand on her hip and rubbed the other across her chest, posing in such a way as to appear obviously seductive. By her laugh, she was obviously teasing Gallus by this point.

Regardless of her outward expressions, Ri'vashi did feel grateful to Gallus for pushing her along to make some more difficult decisions, and not just regarding seeking a mate. The fact that she now had an answer from Gallus, even if it was not the one she had been hoping for, made her more comfortable accepting Meesei's offer. She could return with them to the Bruma clan without much of the uncertainty that had been plaguing her before, at least in regards to personal matters.

"Ah, no no no! That part comes later," Gallus laughed at Ri'vashi's attempts to look seductive. Knowing her, it was just too ridiculous to take seriously. He tapped his finger against the air in front of himself. He said jokingly, "In Gallus' academy of mate-catching we stick to the principles I made you say until otherwise, silly girl."

Gallus chuckled and shook his head. "I could spend all night teaching you things that you'd learn with practice. But, the march goes on tomorrow." Gallus leaned his cheek on his fist. "Is there anything else you wanted to talk about, or should I finally let you sleep?"

Ri'vashi shook her head, then turned herself onto her back once more. "No, Ri'vashi thinks she will be fine. We enter the desert tomorrow, so if you could, make sure every spare container you see is filled with water tomorrow. There is a stream just south of camp. You may want to wash up as well; last chance for about a week until we reach the first oasis."

---

The journey through the desert was just as long and dull as it had been every other time they had made it. It was a few weeks for them to reach the Orcrest clan once more, during which time the mood around the warband only marginally. The grieving over the lost eventually subsided, but their worries on the future remained. Alchemists passed their time by reviewing the recovered notes on the enemy's new weapon; however, it was clear that the production of any kind of antidote would take quite some time to come to fruition, if it ever did at all. They had, unfortunately, not recovered a full list of the gas' ingredients, and they had only a precious few samples which they could test. As such, Meesei decided to order that the samples be locked away in secure crates until they could be taken back to the Bruma clan for study. Just as Meesei had alluded to when she spoke to Ri'vashi, she intended to gather the best alchemists they could to examine it.

What was far less ambiguous from the recovered documents was what they had insinuated about Vile's plans in Tamriel. Gallus' and Meesei's packs had touched on the documents containing the relevant information when they first found them, but had not had time to examine them in detail. In the journey through the desert, however, Meesei had plenty of time to study them, and what she discovered was almost beyond troubling. The prisoners that they had found within the fortress were not simply isolated test subjects. They were a part of a far larger operation that the enemy had been conducting for years. They had been taking captives, usually travelers or isolated farmers, turning them into lycans, then releasing them into areas where they knew the lycan clans could find them. The massive expansion of the lycan population over the last few years had been a direct result of the very enemy they had been fighting. Alone, that information would have been far more confusing than helpful, but combined with what they learned about the gas, Meesei was able to make a reasonable guess as to the purpose of such contradictory actions. The new gas was designed to rip away a lycan's soul, then send it directly to Clavicus Vile's realm without the need for any rituals or soul gems. It was something that any conventional magical or alchemical knowledge would say was impossible, but Meesei had seen the results herself. Some of the alchemists theorized that one or more of the ingredients for the gas could come from Vile's realm itself to help establish a link. Vile's followers had been building up their enemy's numbers for years so that they could quickly harvest thousands upon thousands of lycan souls for their master within the span of a few years. Since lycans were difficult to hold captive, especially in high numbers, Meesei reasoned that it was the quickest option Vile had to gain such a large number of lycan souls.

When the few weeks of traveling drew to a close, and the warband finally returned to the Orcrest clan's stronghold, their reception was a mix of happiness and grief. Given the severe losses they had taken, there were few in the clan who had not lost at least one person close to them. It was a fear that many had held in the clan during their long wait, and one they were devastated to see become reality. Ri'vashi announced that a memorial would be held in three days time, then excused herself to confer privately with Dro'cahi in order to discuss her intended departure from the clan.

The main chamber, and most of the halls and rooms surrounding it, were crowded with people looking for friends and loved ones, and Ahnasha, Fendros, Janius, and Kaleeth were all among them. S'ajira and Jo'rashaad would certainly be among the crowd with their sons; it was just a matter of finding them.

The weeks spent in the desert didn't provide Gallus any hiding places with regards to his pack. The quiet gatherings for meals rose in tension, in spite of Gallus working out his business with Ri'vashi. His avoidance of Peiter in particular caused heated arguments to break out between Gallus and Uthri. Gallus probably would have gone insane if he didn't have Meesei and Ri'vashi to socialise with.

More and more often, Tzirret was avoiding the drama by spending time with Ma'tanza. They continued to grow close, though the situation with Tzirret's pack was causing him great anxiety and distress. He still felt too awkward around Peiter to do anything much more than say a few words.

Sabine continued to spend much time with Peiter, though she couldn't do so all of the time with her duties. She could see the flaring tempers in Peiter's pack only making Peiter's situation worse. She wished she could do something about it.

In comparison, Meesei's pack was all but recovered from the attack. True, they were sad about Uthri's death and there was concern raised about Peiter via Sabine. However, the parents were mostly looking forward to seeing the children again, as well as taking advantage of the time they had alone together. Meesei's treatment continued without fear for her life.

"Where do you think they would be waiting?" Fendros asked Janius and Ahnasha either side of him. Wading through the crowd aimlessly was proving to be a slow method of finding their children and their guardians.

"Newt!" Janius called out, cupping his hands to speak over the crowd. He looked around the main hall with a furrowed brow. It was impossible to spot anyone outside of the immediate area. "If only they were taller. S'ajira's on all fours and Jo'rashaad isn't the tallest one in the clan." He tried again. "Newt!"

"Rhazii!" Fendros took up Janius' strategy.

Janius let out a breath. "It feels like it's been so long," he said to Kaleeth. "They've probably grown a bit."

"Rhazii!"

"Dada!"

Fendros' head snapped towards the familiar voice and the four shuffled through the crowds towards it.

Everyone in the group weaved through the crowd as quickly as they could, with Kaleeth being perhaps a bit too assertive in how she shoved past a few people. When she had her mind set on a goal, she could be quite a bit more forceful than one might expect. Newt was running alongside Rhazii towards their parents, and S'ajira was moving directly beside them to make sure no one in the crowd failed to notice them and accidentally step on them. Jo'rashaad was walking more calmly behind them, smiling at the excitement radiating from both of the children.

The moment Kaleeth saw Newt, she dropped down to one knee so that she could hug her son, who jumped up into her arms. "Mama!" He shouted gleefully once he was in her embrace, though her torso muffled his voice. Janius would likely be wanting to hold him as well, but Kaleeth was a bit too caught up in the moment to remember that detail. She was hugging him tightly, and was not intent on letting him go.

Ahnasha was right behind Fendros, so Rhazii reached him first. Compared to Kaleeth, she knelt down more calmly and slowly to get down to Rhazii's level. "It's so good to see you again. Have you been having fun here, little one?"

Behind the children, both Jo'rashaad and S'ajira breathed a shared sigh of relief. They had heard the clan leader's announcement on the memorial and the losses they had sustained before seeing any of the Champion's pack. Until this moment, they did not know if all of the children's parents had survived.

Rhazii's actions were very similar to Newt's. They practically raced to their parents and Rhazii tried to tackle his kneeling father over. Fendros wasn't quite barrelled over, but the impact made him laugh. He gave his son a tight hug in return. "Hello, little one!" he said with a broad grin.

Unlike Kaleeth's inescapable grip, Fendros let Rhazii pull away quickly so he could run, grinning, into his mother's arms as well. "I missed you mama!" Rhazii said. His excitement ran faster than his mind could process the words to say. "Me and Newt got to do so much! We...got to stay up late! We...we had lots and lots of sweet food!"

"Sweets or no, S'ajira and Jo'rashaad must have fed you well," Fendros said. He brought the side of his hand up near the top of Rhazii's head. "It looks like you've gotten a bit taller since we left."

Meanwhile, Janius grinned and put his hands on his hips. He suspected that Kaleeth's reaction would be something like this. After a quick chuckle, he squat down and put a hand each on Kaleeth and Newt's backs. "Together again at last. Come here, Newt." Janius brought one hand to Newt's side and began to tickle him until he fought away from his mother slightly. Instead of giving Newt a reunited hug, Janius lifted him up by the armpits, stood up, and brought an arm under him to hold him close. "Have you been behaving yourself, son?" Janius said with a laugh. "Did you take care of Rhazii like we asked?"

The mention of growing by Fendros made him think that something was missing from this exchange. What it was hit him physically as hard as it did mentally. Leaps-On-Elves lived up to his namesake a moment later and succeeded where Rhazii failed, forcing Fendros to the floor after a running charge. Fendros held the small wamasu back with his arms and broke out laughing.

The parents seemed a bit too caught up to greet S'ajira and Jo'rashaad for the moment, but there would be time soon enough.

Kaleeth was reluctant to let go of Newt, but when he started to wriggle in her arms, she kissed the top of his head and released her grip. Being a particularly ticklish child, Newt's mouth was wide open from his laughter, so it took him a few seconds to actually be able to answer. "I was good, I promise. Rhazii is gonna...lie about it. I only got in trouble once for giving Leaps a piece of sweetcake. But I don't think I should've got in trouble. He didn't even eat it!"

It was not seconds later that Fendros was tackled by Leaps, prompting laughs from Newt, Ahnasha, and kaleeth, and something similar to a chuckle from S'ajira. Ahnasha rubbed the wamasu's back while he was enthusiastically trying to take in every last bit of Fendros' scent. "Hmm, isn't Leaps just such a good boy? I can't wait to hear about all you three have been doing while we were gone."

Kaleeth took the time to stand up next to Janius, then hug both him and Newt once more. "We should probably all find somewhere more quiet, away from the crowd." She suggested, though she did not intend to go anywhere without first speaking to Jo'rashaad and S'ajira. While she would like to catch up with them, she was sure they would be wanting to find and speak with Ra'kalesh.

Rhazii and Janius both ended up laughing at Leaps' antics as well. When Fendros finally pushed the creature off his body and stood up, Leaps changed targets, going for Janius. Janius saw him coming enough to bring up a hand and stop him from pushing him over, but Leaps was just being playful. He didn't put too much effort into it. "Yes, it's good to see you, too, Leaps!" Janius said. Leaps just as quickly went for Kaleeth and Ahnasha in turn, though he stopped trying to push everyone over. He opted to simply skitter about excitedly around them all.

"Alright, little Newt, I'll trust you for now," Janius said jokingly. "But I'll hear what your guardians had to say as well, okay?" Janius gave Newt a quick kiss and walked over to Jo'rashaad and S'ajira. "It's great to see your faces again, friends," Janius said to them both. With his free arm, he gave Jo'rashaad a quick hug and squat down to hug S'ajira's neck for a moment as well. The others approached to do the same as Janius spoke. "Shall we find a spot to catch up, or just talk here? Or we could catch up later, I'm..." Janius' mouth twisted awkwardly, but he did not want to ruin the mood of the moment right now. "You'll want to visit Ra'kalesh, I think."

Fendros held onto Rhazii's hand as he approached. He asked with a broad smile, "Thank you for taking good care of our children all this time. Did they give you much trouble?"

Jo'rashaad laughed as he glanced down towards the children. "At times, but what child doesn't cause trouble? We were glad to help. You were putting your lives at risk for our benefit, so it was the least we could do. Jo'rashaad just...wishes it would not have been so costly. It looks like so many did not return..."

S'ajira nudged Jo'rashaad's side, then pointed her head to one side briefly. "Yes, of course." He said, nodding in understanding. "We definitely want to catch up, but we would like to speak to our pride leader first. Will you have time later to talk? How long is your pack going to stay with us?"

Ahnasha was scratching the back of Leaps' neck to keep him occupied while they spoke. "A few days, at least." She answered. "I think there is still some business we need to settle while we're here. Plus, it will be nice to have at least a few days rest before getting back into the desert."

"Jo'rashaad understands, definitely. He is not looking forward to the day we have to make that journey again. Hopefully we can all have time to talk soon." He responded.

Both Fendros and Janius' faces darkened slightly at the mention of the warband's losses.

"Yes, we should find a time to all share a meal together." Fendros somehow hid the awkwardness he felt. Letting someone go to find out that their packmate -- or in this case specifically, their sister -- was dead felt awful. Fendros didn't want to be the one to tell them, but he didn't want to pretend like nothing was wrong. He reached out and took Jo'rashaad's shoulder. "Look, before you go...know that we achieved a victory, but it was not the victory we were hoping for. We will talk later." Fendros gave a pursed, forlorn smile and squeezed Jo'rashaad's shoulder.

"Dada? What happened?" Rhazii, as usual, picked up on the unsaid situation with as much naivety as bad timing.

Fendros let Jo'rashaad go and looked down at Rhazii with a smile. "We'll tell you all sorts of stories about our journey, little one. But first, how about we take you children to see the others?" Fendros began to turn around, jovial as he was before. "Meesei and Sabine want to see you. Lorag...him too, he just might not say it."

"See you later, you two," Janius gave a wave to S'ajira and Jo'rashaad. "Give Ciinriel, La'khay, and Colours our greetings."

That night was made up of a number of tasks. There was much grieving in the halls for all that did not return, but just as much work to be done in packing away the caravan and catching up with those that lived. Ahnasha and Fendros spent most of their time taking turns watching the children, repairing their equipment, or otherwise making themselves useful.

Rhazii, being barely four years of age, did not likely have the most accurate description of events while their were taken care of by Jo'rashaad and S'ajira. However, the tales of them becoming popular with the other young children for having a wamasu pet to play with raised a few nervous chuckles. There were thankfully no horror stories stemming from that. The only real emotional concern was one that Fendros and Janius, at least, did not consider; Newt and Rhazii had made friends among the clan. They were not life long bonds forged over trials and years, but they suspected that there would be some upset when the pack would leave for home.

Before long, the sons were tucked away to bed. Janius and Kaleeth had no immediate concerns that took them out of reach of the sleeping children, but Fendros and Ahnasha had something from the back of their minds for a while. This was probably the best time they would get to interact with Marcaille.

After asking around, Fendros and Ahnasha had worked out where Marcaille generally was at this time of the evening and proceeded to her laboratory. Fendros walked with a serious expression while they walked, but he looked to Ahnasha with a hint of uncertainty. "I would like to be with you so I can try to understand whatever Marcaille does myself, but...if you need me to go, if you want to go on your own, it's fine by me."

Peiter and Sabine had been somewhat busy since they arrived at the clanhome. They, or rather Sabine with Peiter dragged along, offered to help with unpacking. Sabine thought she could help Peiter's confidence by carrying supplies between them and proving that he was not completely useless with only one arm. What ended up happening was Peiter only being further reminded of his disability, ending in shares of disappointment between them both. That meant that dinner ended up being somewhat quiet when they shared it in the dining hall, but Sabine perked up with inspiration once they had finished.

"I think I know who might cheer you up, Peiter." Sabine smiled broadly at Peiter from where she was seated opposite him. "We have not visited La'khay yet."

Ahnasha could not help but to feel nervous as she and Fendros went in search for Marcaille. She had taken the time to speak to the Breton on a few occasions during the journey, but she had never hinted at what she wanted from her. Marcaille herself seemed to be a perfectly kind person, but the subject of necromancy was not something Ahnasha liked to discuss with anyone, and with good reason. There were few in the world who did not look down upon necromancers, so admitting that she practiced such magic could easily cause trouble for her.

Regardless of Ahnasha's worries, she shook her head when Fendros suggested that he leave. "No, I know you already don't like what I do. I know you have a hard time trusting me with this magic, so I want you to see that I have nothing to hide from you. You can listen yourself to her talk about everything I'll have to do."

The pair stepped into the laboratory, which seemed to be a personal laboratory for Marcaille, instead of the alchemists in general. The Breton was on the other side of the room at a table, and appeared to be cataloging ingredients. Ahnasha paused, looked at Fendros, and took in a deep breath as she went over in her mind how exactly she intended to ask her question of Marcaille.

Peiter's head perked up when Sabine broke the silence between them, though he appeared to be confused at first. "La'khay? What do you want to visit her for?" He asked, but thinking back to their time before the march answered his own question for him. "Oh, right. The painting. I guess we can go see her. Do you remember the way to her room?"
