Sabine did not feel the need to alter the plan further. Even if Yerig and Rhajul were not warriors of the lowest profile, the fallback plan was the alternative plan in the first place. If they would have to fight, so be it.

Later on, the sight of the dragon itself shook Sabine's resolve for a moment. It was every bit as imposing as she imagined and more. Knowing how large and strong the bones within the creature were did not help matters -- nothing about the dragon's body was weak. The kind of magic to kill such a creature would have to be powerful indeed. Perhaps not beyond her abilities, especially with the Staff of Magnus, but still frightening.

"Yerig." Sabine said, holding the staff close to herself. "Can any of us speak with it, or does it only understand its shouting language?"

Yerig nodded. "Aye, most dragons can speak our tongue. Whether they choose to or not is another matter. I can speak the dragon language, at the very least." He answered.

The mountains at the center of the island were not tall enough to be snowy, though the trees did still start to thin as the terrain became more uneven and rocky. Yerig voiced his concern that the group would have to start scaling cliff faces if they wanted to get to the top of the mountain with the dragon, only partially sarcastically. However, the tracks they were following eventually led onto an actual trail: the first sign they had discovered that the island had ever actually been inhabited by anyone. The trail was old and partially overgrown by grass. It seemed to wind its way up the mountain, and based on the tracks they could see, it had been what Cyrus and his group had followed up the mountain.

The trail was long, steep, and winding, but it did lead the entire distance up the mountain. Yerig was nearly out of breath by the time they neared the top, but fortunately, was not too distracted to keep himself quiet on their approach. The trail led up to a mostly flat clearing on the top of the mountain, which was wide and had only grass for foliage. At the very center of the clearing was a single old, stone Imperial watchtower that was just tall enough to be the highest point on the island at its tip, though with the tree cover on the island, it had not been easily visible from below. However, what would draw their eyes more would be the dragon itself, which had finally come into full view. For Sabine, or either of the others, it was among the largest of creatures that any of them had seen in person. Not even the largest and strongest of lycans could come close to the scale of the reptilian beast, which had massive claws and teeth which could easily rip a person apart. And that was not even to mention a dragon's magical abilities. What was even more curious about it, however, was what it was doing. Surrounding the base of the watchtower was what, at first, looked to be debris. There were smashed wooden crates, broken carts, and quite a few chests and other containers, all of which had been collected into a disorganized pile. Looking closely, however, they would be able to see that these containers were not empty, Although it was hard to pick out details from a distance, many of the crates carried trade goods like cloth, leather, and even the glint of gold and jewels. The dragon itself was on the ground in the clearing, dragging in its mouth a crate with East Empire Company markings towards the base of the watchtower.

While Sabine may not have been informed on the habits of dragons, the perplexed look on Yerig's face would show that it was an unusual sight. "That's...odd." Yerig whispered.

The progression up the mountain grew Sabine's certainty that the bounty hunters had fallen. The dragon was still alive, they were barely a few hours from the top of the small mountain, and there did not appear to be any other trail up to the top that they had spotted. Sabine focussed her thoughts on encountering the dragon rather than the hunters.

The site of the dragon's apparent hoard was no less confusing for Sabine when she saw it. No doubt, the pile of goods were the evidence for the bounty on the creature's head. What was not explained was its motive. An isolated dragon had little use for leather, precious metals, and other trade goods.

Sabine shot Yerig a look. "What is it?" she whispered in response to his reaction.

Yerig was dead still, crouched down and peering through the bush behind which he was hiding. Do'rhajul was following suit by staying as silent as possible as they observed, giving off only the faintest sounds of breathing. Looking around the clearing, there were yet more details to take in. The grass in some places looked like it had been scorched, and there were what looked like weapons laying around: swords, spears, arrows, and the like. It certainly looked like evidence of a battle, though there were no bodies within view.

"I don't know. It looks like he's...hoarding things? Valuable things, or at least most of it looks valuable." Yerig whispered. "Some of those crates have East Empire Company markings, but that would mean he would had to have made an effort to drag them off of the ships he attacked. I just don't know why. That's not something dragons really do, not outside children's tales. I don't know why this one would be collecting a hoard of treasure; none of that looks like it would be worth much of anything to a dragon."

"But it's worth quite a lot to anyone else." Do'rhajul interjected just as quietly. "It is bait, a trap. The beast wants to lure someone here. Perhaps someone specific, or just people in general."

Yerig still had a confused look about him. "But...why? That would just bring down more hunters upon him. Dragons may be strong, and they may be arrogant, but even they know they are not invincible. They were hunted to extinction once before."

Do'rhajul gave another long look towards the watchtower. "I do not know, but if this Redguard was killed by the dragon, then the axe we seek is somewhere among those treasures, almost certainly."

Sabine gave a silent moment to think. She swallowed nervously. This was the dragon's home ground, prim and prepared for an attack. Sabine counted the discarded equipment and scorch marks as enough to invoke her humility.

"We will not be able to rummage through without it noticing us," she deduced. "We either reason with it or ambush it. And it is an experienced killer waiting for more to try." Sabine blinked her eyes to Yerig. "I think...both of you drink your potions for fire. Yerig, call out in its language to greet it." She held a palm up. "If it attacks, we will fight here. If it talks..."

Sabine turned ahead, trailing off with a sigh. "...Hopefully we can find a way to obtain the axe."

Yerig took in a deep breath. "Okay, if that's the plan, I'll do it." He answered, taking out the waterskin with his fire resistance potion. "Just make sure to make your first attack count if you have the element of surprise, if or when he attacks. I can protect myself from harm, at least for a while. Whether he attacks or not, I do expect he'll be willing to talk for a while. Dragons really do like to talk."

Yerig drank both the fire resistance potion, and the others Sabine had made to improve his stamina, then stepped out from behind the foliage and into the clearing. The dragon was faced towards the watchtower at the time, so he did not see Yerig immediately, which allowed the Nord to speak the first words.

"Drem yol lok, zin dovah." Yerig began, making sure he was not yet showing any signs of aggression. He had his hands clasped together in front of himself, far from the weapon on his back.

Upon hearing Yerig's greeting, the dragon turned his body towards him. Each step from his massive form was loud enough to be easily heard by the others, even on the dirt and grass. It gave him a powerful presence, if being a dragon by itself was not enough to accomplish that. This was an older dragon, Yerig could see. In all likelihood, he was one of the earlier dragons created after Alduin. He had faint scars marking the battles he had been through, particularly on his head and near his claws. The dragon raised up his head as he looked down upon Yerig, humming a low growl. "Ahst laat? Lost fin tiid meyz?"

The dragon stared more closely at Yerig, his head inching closer. For a few seconds, he looked over Yerig critically and took in his scent before giving another, more aggressive growl. "Niid! Ni bahlaan joor! Hi kos ni fin gein Zu'u yah. Hi kos ni Dovahkiin!"

With a glance around the area, the dragon spoke a few words: a shout. "Laas-Yah-Nir"

Immediately, the dragon's gaze went directly to the locations of Do'rhajul, then Sabine, despite both being out of sight. Regardless of whatever efforts Sabine might have made to keep them hidden, the dragon's shout had revealed them. There would be no surprising him. "Hmm? Nivahriin tafiirre. Kotin fin bex voth hi!"

The dialogue so far was tense, as far as Sabine could tell. A foreign language and non-humanoid body language left no easy hints for her. The fact that Yerig was not engulfed in fire at least gave some hope. When the dragon's first thu'um reverberated around them, Sabine flinched. She had expected something more visual. Then Yerig's previous warning about the dragon's capability to detect life through its shouts came to her mind. The large spined head of the dragon was not looking at anything past her and Do'rhajul.

It did not take longer than a few seconds for Sabine to conclude their hiding spot was compromised. Sabine emptied her lungs. There was no good to be had from staying put. She nudged Do'rhajul with a finger. "Stand up with me," she said.

Sabine looked ahead and slowly stood into view. She carefully stepped out from behind the foliage with her staff firmly in her grip. She was ready to raise a ward at a moment's notice, but she lifted her other palm non-threateningly. Her fingers were shivering in spite of the determined look on her face.

Sabine glanced at Yerig. She had no idea what the dragon was saying.

Yerig gave a quick glance towards Sabine and Do'rhajul as they came into view. "It seems he is looking for the Dragonborn. And is rather upset that I am not him." He explained, softly and briefly.

Meanwhile, the dragon was still eyeing his surroundings, but since the only creatures in the area other than himself were the three in front of him, his gaze quickly settled back upon them. With how different he was from any other race in Tamriel, it was almost impossible to tell if his demeanor was actually aggressive. Being a dragon, he was simply intimidating by default. Though, based on what Yerig had said, he certainly was not happy.

The dragon continued, his voice overshadowing everyone else present. "Gahrot yuvon? Have you come to take these treasures? Meyye. The last of your kind to try at least brought enough kendovve not to insult me. The Dovahkiin has yet to answer my challenge, but it does allow me to sharpen my strength on fools chasing their greed. Grik pahlok."

Sabine quirked her head. She was under the impression that the Dragonborn was in Skyrim somewhere. She chose her words carefully now that the dragon spoke Cyrodilic.

"We are not here for greed," she said. "Rather, chasing someone else who came here for greed. Or glory. Likely both. He carried something important to our quest." Sabine nervously fell back on manners, holding one hand to her chest. "My name is Sabine. These are my companions, Do'rhajul and Yerig. May we know your name?"

The dragon took a few lumbering steps forward, bringing himself almost uncomfortably close to Sabine. Do'rhajul was on-edge with his hand resting on the hilt of his blade, though he did not yet draw it. The dragon raised up his head to tower even further over Sabine. "Hmph. Hi kos ni bahlaan wah mindok nii. You will not know my name, and I do not care about yours. Your quest is meaningless to me, mortal."

After a moment, the dragon's maw opened slightly, showing the teeth between his powerful jaws. Even without considering a dragon's magic, they had a bite at least as powerful as a werecrocodile. Anything that happened to be caught within his jaws would be torn to pieces. "If you wish to claim one of these worthless trinkets, then you will have to claim it by right of your own strength. Prove that you are the zol mul."

A sinking fear tugged at Sabine's jaw muscles. She breathed shallowly.

She poke so quietly that the dragon at first may have had trouble hearing. "Is that all you care about?" Her airy voice lifted slightly higher. "Strength?"

She stepped back several paces, looking up at the dragon's eyes. She was not sure whether the next question to come to mind would end the beast's temper. "But if I defeat you, what will you do after? How will you defeat the Dragonborn?"

The dragon growled at Sabine. "Viik? You will have to kill me to claim your prize. I grow tired of this pointless tinvaak. I am a warrior. Vahzah kendov. When the Dovahkiin accepts my challenge, there will be a reckoning. But right now, you have come to take from me, so do it. Show me your strength, and taste the power of my Thu'um for yourself. Krif voth ahkrin. Give me a challenge."

Regardless of any protests that Sabine or the others may have had, the dragon had made up his mind. Sabine would feel magicka starting to flow through him, and see the orange glow from his mouth as he reared back his head. Both Yerig and Do'rhajul were already starting to draw their weapons when the dragon unleashed his fire breath at Sabine.

The light of the fire obscured Sabine's movement for the dragon's entire breath. It streamed out in a vicious flume lasting a long moment, but when it passed there remained a bright blue shell surrounding Sabine. She was now braced with one foot back and her staff forward, projecting a broad, shimmering ward that bisected the pattern of new flickering flames on the ground around her.

The ward fell with Sabine's arms steaming and freezing a layer of bright rime frost. She brought her hands up and forward suddenly and each projected speeding spears of ice at each of the dragon's wings.

Sabine's face was a worried brow and a clenched jaw. However, the staff gave her a confidence she did not think she had.

There was something that might have been surprise in the dragon's reaction upon seeing Sabine survive his fire unscathed, or perhaps it was anger, given the growl that followed. The massive beast had little time to react before Sabine's powerful spears of ice tore through his wings with ease. Although the wings were not the strongest part of a dragon's body, they were still not trivial to cut through, so for the dragon, her power was a cause for concern.

Unfortunately, it would take more than one or two holes in his wings to keep the dragon out of the sky. Do'rhajul and Yerig had their weapons drawn and were advancing on him, but had to stop as they heard his voice form a familiar shout: "Fus-Ro-Dah"

The dragon's booming voice was as loud as a crack of lightning, and the force his shout created was even greater than what Yerig had used on Janius. The blast of energy flattened the grass instantly to the ground and kicked up enough dirt and dust to nearly blind them all momentarily. The shout was meant to stop Do'rhajul and Yerig, though his unrelenting force was wide enough to threaten all three. Yerig ducked behind Do'rhajul, while the Khajiit raised up his shield to protect them from the magic.

Amid the cloud of dust, the group would be able to hear, and feel, the loud flapping of the dragon's wings as he attempted to get into the air.

Sabine barely brought up a ward in time against the dragon's next shout. Even then, the ear-splitting shockwave physically exerted enough to send Sabine flying onto her back and knocking the wind out of her.

By the time she spun up to her feet and coughed her breath back, Sabine saw the dragon airborne. It was leaking blood from its pierced wing membranes. Still it lifted.

It was too big to force down with telekinesis. It would soon be moving too much to launch spells that did not travel as fast as lightning. Sabine neither could manage a powerful stream of lightning like Meesei could. She let magicka stream into her left hand as it swirled with a roiling mist. It gathered such power that it sprayed flecks of snow out from its spinning mass. Sabine pushed her palm forward and released a cone of dagger-sized, razor sharp ice shards speeding in a scatter up at the ascending dragon. Most would glance, more would hit.

Particularly since it had not had a chance to pick up much speed, the dragon could not avoid the bulk of Sabine's ice shards. His dragon scales were tough enough to avoid being punctured by the small shards of ice, even if the cold still did bite against them. However, it was again his wings that were the most vulnerable. Yet more holes were pierced through them as he ascended, but it was still not enough. The dragon ended up flying somewhat far from the group, though that was only so he could have time to get more speed on his approach. He expected some kind of attack from the mage, so his reaction was ever so slightly delayed when Yerig took the opportunity to attack.

"Liz-Slen-Nus" Yerig's shout rang out, forming into a sizable wave of ice in front of him that he projected into the sky, straight at his target. The dragon did bank to the side to avoid it, but he was not quite quick enough to completely dodge it. The shout hit the end of his left wing, encasing it in ice. It was not too directly harmful to the dragon, but naturally, the increased weight of one wing made flight much more difficult. The dragon ended up losing about half of his altitude before he finally stabalized, now flying more slowly, and with less agility. Even between the ice and the holes pierced through the membrane, it was not quite enough to take him out of the sky. But, he was now a much easier target above them.

Sabine braced to be prepared for anything with the dragon's flight above them. From throwing more spells, to warding another shout, to tumbling out of the way of a swoop. She flinched and hesitated with Yerig's shout on the dragon's wing messing up her timing, but it was an opportunity she did not intend to pass up.

Carefully aiming, Sabine once again threw a large icy spear at the dragon. This time, aiming just under the shoulder. She did not know if she could pierce its scales but she wanted to try whatever she could to force its landing.

If it did not work, she had one last trick to try, if her companions could protect her while trying it.

With as low as the dragon was now flying, Sabine's spell could easily find its mark. The scales on its joints were still strong, but not invincible. Although it was not a deep wound, it did draw some blood, but more importantly, the ice magic could pierce into his body. It chilled the muscles and bones in his wing at the shoulder, which made it more difficult to flap that wing. Since he was already low to the ground, it was finally enough to bring him down entirely.

The dragon slid across the ground, his massive body essentially digging up a trench through the soft dirt. He landed in the clearing, although his momentum brought him a fair distance away from the group, so they could not easily capitalize on his vulnerability before he was able to rise back to his feet. It was possible that he could still take off again, but for now, he was on the ground with them.

Turning his body around, the dragon let out a furious roar, then another shout towards the group: "Gaan-Lah-Haas"

Sabine broke into a run to close distance with the crash-landed dragon. She had more warning for the next shout, which she drew up a ward against, though still had no idea what it would do. She stopped and braced herself in case it had force behind it.

When it washed over her ward, she was concerned by the way it was not absorbed like the other shouts. The dark magic instead drew pressure the other way. Her ward was being sapped of its power. A numbness in her fingers told of the effect sapping her strength as well.

Sabine kept her ward up and drew upon another spell in her other hand. A golden spell. She had to stave off the draining before acting further. It would take a moment that gave the dragon an opportunity to act.

Spellbreaker's ward was as indomitable as always against the dragon's shout, so Do'rhajul was safe against the draining magic. Instead of hiding behind his Khajiit friend, Yerig took another approach by letting out his own shout: "Feim"

Yerig's body took on a ghostly, ethereal form, through which the dark violet magic passed as if he was not even there. His momentum did not stop as he rushed forward at the dragon with his blade at the ready. The beast could not affect him while he was in his ethereal form, but unlike most opponents, the dragon knew exactly how the shout functioned, and how to prepare. Yerig would not be able to rely upon the element of surprise. He feinted to the dragon's left, but then dashed to his right as he swung his blade across the side of the dragon's head. He aimed his blade for the weaker scales at the edge of the dragon's mouth to pierce through, then dragged his as far as he could across the dragon's head as he continued to run, trying to put distance between himself and the dragon. Unfortunately, the dragon was too seasoned of a fighter to be stunned by the pain, so he was able to react. Although he could not turn his head back quickly enough to bite Yerig, he was able to lash out with his wing to strike Yerig from behind and knock him straight down to the ground.

Do'rhajul was not far behind, and did not allow the dragon the chance to take advantage of Yerig's vulnerability. As the dragon was rearing back to breathe his fire, Do'rhajul smashed his shield into the side of the dragon's head from a full sprint, while also stabbing his blade towards the dragon's eye. Unfortunately, he missed the eye by a small margin, but his blade still carried enough force to stab into the dragon's snout.

Letting out a roar, the dragon quickly pushed his head against Do'rhajul to send even the large Cathay-raht flying a short distance. By that point, Yerig had managed to get to his feet, but it was Sabine that would be in a position to attack first. The power of her staff could allow her to hit the dragon with some exceptionally destructive magic, if that was her plan.
