"Hmm, you don't know then?"

"Sorry, only thing around here is forests and mountains for miles. If you're looking for a desert I don't think anyone around here can help."

"I see..."

"I have heard rumor of a sea of sand far to the south, though, but I can't say for certain its what you're looking for miss."

"Hm, well, regardless that helps if even a little. You have my thanks." With a shake of her head, Charlotte turned and left the small tavern. Ugh, ever since leaving Astril she's had almost no luck finding anything regarding her studies. To be expected she supposed, but it was frustratingly annoying how little people even cared about. She couldn't find a single person that she could have a decent conversation with, either. Not that she was trying to say she was better than the people outside of Astril, but education was a thing many people there valued - and it seemed quite a few outside, did not.

"Ugh, at this rate I'd be better off at picking a random direction and walking." She grumbled, stepping into the cool early morning air. She had been traveling for some time now, after ending up shipwrecked on a coast not far away from here. After spending a few weeks being scared out of her mind since she had never once set foot outside Astril, she realized that despite most people there believing the world outside was filled with nothing but barbarians and madmen, the people weren't so different after all.

Still made socializing a bit awkward though.

Where would she go now though? She was out of options and leads.

Again.

She let out a long sigh, pulling her cloak tighter around her. Well, might as well see if she could find a map of the region. Maybe if she could find a traveler who knew where they were going she could tag along a bit? As much as she didn't like to admit it, she practically knew nothing of the world outside of Astril.

Nearby at a nearby market stall, a fairly tall girl with outlandish clothing (for the area at least) held a symbol up to the stall-owner. "Do you know where this is from?" She asked, curiosity coating her voice. She seemed nice enough though. She held a sigil or something of the sort on a scrap of cloth.

"I don't. Never seen it. Don't want to tell one of your kind either." The man she was talking to replied rather curtly. His eyes looked a bit sunken like he was quite tired. "You can hide your wings, but I've seen those clothes before. You're all so... Conceited."

The girl's face dropped from a nice smile to a look as if she was tired of doing so. "Kami be praised, I was tired of this act anyhow. You must be from the village at the foot of the mountain. Hmph. You humans are creatures that should be doubted anyway. I'll be gone from your shop. If you do know anything and you refuse to tell me... So help you if I find out." It was an idle threat anyhow. Not like she would waste her blade on such a pathetic being anyways. She turned around and bumped into a human girl that seemed out of place in this town for some reason.

The not-so-human girl eyed the other for a couple of seconds and put on a smile. "My apologies! I didn't mean to run into you!" She quickly muttered. This girl was probably quite cute as far as human girls went.

"Hardly, she don't care one lick." The man from the stall said, leaning forward a bit resting on his workplace.

The girl's eyes narrowed and the corner of her mouth curled down into a frown, "Quiet you! I've finished with this conversation." She was a bit irritated with him and his... Rudeness. Soon though, she realized she just blew up in front of him like that. She quickly turned back to the human girl and stuttered a bit. "I mean, uhh, that is to say... Ummm, let's talk over here. Away from eavesdroppers." She added before dragging the girl away to a small out of the way place.

"My apologies, how rude of me to... Complain in front of you like that. Speaking of..." She gripped the piece of cloth she had in her hands before opening it toward the girl in front of her, showing the sigil inside. "Would you know what this is? I've yet to find anyone that knows in the few village I've been to."

"Wuh?!" Charlotte had been quite surprised to have someone nearly run into her. She stumbled backwards a bit, almost tripping over her own admittedly slightly uncoordinated feet. Her fault for walking so close to them, but she had been so lost in thought she hadn't even been paying attention. Well, that was fine she should just apologize and move on. Easiest that way - and now she was being dragged off by this girl. "Hey hey, wait a second! I'm rather busy-" her pleas fell on deaf ears however, and she soon found herself dragged off to the side before she could say anything. Not like she was strong enough to protest, either.

Once she had gotten back on her feet and out of the grasp of this incredibly rude woman she dusted off her cloak with her hands, fixing the woman with a glare and ignoring the paper showed to her for a moment.

"Complain? Rude to complain? Oh yes, that is the rudest thing you've done here. Dragging someone off against their will isn't rude at all, noooo." She grumbled, sighing with a shake of her head. She had half a mind to simply ignore this woman and move on, but then the paper caught her eyes.

That...no, no, it couldn't be.

All hostility in her face faded almost instantly as she snatched the paper from the other girl. She turned, studying the paper and sigil intently. This...could this be legitimate? Or was someone playing a trick on her again? Unlikely. She had never seen this girl before...so could it be genuine? The chances were good, then! Right. She should let herself get excited or carried away. She turned back to the girl, unable to hide visible excitement.

"Where did you get this?" She asked, seemingly forgetting the meaning of the phrase 'personal space'. If she found someone that shared her interest, then...then maybe this would be interesting? She couldn't keep her hopes up, but it was difficult not too. "I mean, yes yes, I know what this is." Finally recollecting some semblance of decorum, she took a few steps back, clearing her throat. "Well, somewhat. It's an emblem relating to a long-dead Empire known as Harena. And it just so happens I've recently been...researching it for my own reasons." She handed the emblem back to the woman. "...so what are you doing with it? Are you a scholar, perhaps?"

"Do I look a scholar?" The tall girl asked before giving a quick sigh and taking the sigil back. "Harena though? It sounds familiar. That was the desert nation I was to believe. Either way, it's related to that? Perhaps I'll have to visit the sands then." That's further than she wanted to go, definitely. She'd tired her wings out looking for it too. She didn't have a big idea where it was either. "Tell me, human who's name I've yet to learn. Where is Harena. I need to know for the Divine." Of course, she didn't specify which Divine, though she obviously meant a specific one.

There was no one around now, she supposed she'd reveal herself to this human and use her knowledge if she didn't flat out run away. "Behold, human, the form of the Great Tengu Tribe." Behind her, a pair of wings sprouted from her back spreading out to show off their splendor. "You stand in front of Himeko Kagekoro. I propose we... Work together. Loath I am to say it."

Actually yes, she looked like one of those self-righteous scholars that had a tendency to look down on everyone like they were less intelligent then they were back in Astril. She was getting flashbacks just from looking at the way she carried herself and spoke. It was well hidden, but she had spent most of her life growing up with similar people. She just hadn't said anything because shew wanted this encounter to be over with quickly, but it seemed like she might have to put up with her.

When she started speaking of 'Divine' though, that caused all her thought processes to come to a screeching halt. Divine? Was she some sort of religious nut-job? Oh good. Even worse. A self-righteous fool whose self righteousness was based in some fictional creature that likely didn't even exist.

What happened next though, completely shattered Charlotte's understanding of the world. Tengu tribe? Wings? What in the name of the great stars was she?! She in fact, was so far out of her element in dealing with something like a 'Tengu' whatever that was that she couldn't formulate a response other than jumping back a few feet, eyes wide with slight surprise.

"Wah, demon!"

Way to go Charlotte, really eloquent. Realizing that she was a squishy human and that this creature could probably snap her like a twig Charlotte quickly attempted to recover.

"I-I mean, uhm...haha, I've never seen...or heard of a Tengu before?" She said quickly. "I am Charlotte and would very much like to continue living." She chuckled nervously. Well, if she had to she had a few tricks up her sleeves in the form a few nasty surprises.

"Demon!? Don't conflate our race with that backwards civilization of lust! I am a proud Tengu. Said to have been born from Crows and the Divine in the mountain!" The girl boasted. She was obviously quite proud of what she was. That said, she seemed amused that the human was afraid.

"Still though, you think I'd waste the swing of my blade to end your life? I still have use for you anyway. As much as I hate to admit, I've had none that thought they might even have an idea as to what this sigil was. None but you that is. You should be honored that the great Tengu of the Mountain have asked you for your assistance." She sounded pretty pretentious about it too. Not that she didn't sound appreciative of Charlotte's knowledge. "Oh, but where are my manners. My name is Himeko Kagekoro. We Tengu mean no ill will to you humans. Though, I won't say I like your race as a whole."

Himeko looked over this girl again, studying her. "I shall even deign to use your name, Charlotte. So, where is Harena from here? Do you not know?"

Well, she wasn't dying. That was good.

The 'Tengu' though, was quite obviously full of herself and was part of some haughty civilization. Also could be good. If she could play her cards right then maybe she could get access to some rare reagents and information. As long as she could put up with their obvious bullshit, but she was good at that so that shouldn't be a problem.

"I see..." Charlotte now that she was in any immediate danger of dying, the human took a closer look at the being in front of them. She held a hand to her chin in thought as she quietly observed the 'Tengu'. Humanoid. Brown hair and tall. Taller than she was at least, by almost a head. Six foot even, she'd guess. Not to mention those odd shoes she was wearing. She must have almost impeccable balance to be able to wear them and not feel both uncomfortable and be tripping and fall all the time.

What really interested her though, was her wings.

Black and well...feathery. How on earth did they even work on a humanoid? She had to wonder the biology behind it. Either the wing muscles were extremely strong or her body was extremely light. Did the feathers also have any different alchemical properties from normal birds? They looked similar to crow feathers, so it was possible they were related. She wondered if she could get away with just plucking one and using it in her experiments?

Ah...she was staring. Quite intently at someone. Right she should stop that before this Tengu gets offended. Come to think of it aside from her attitude she was quite pretty and - no, stop that brain.

"Ahem," Charlotte cleared her throat, rather dismissively exhaling. "You'll have to forgive me if I don't feel honored. I don't even know what a 'Tengu' or this mountain you speak of is." With that attitude she would be surprised if anyone would be honored, but she refrained from saying that for now. This woman at least, seemed to hold some interest in Harena. She could tolerate her at least for now. "That aside..." She reached into her cloak, fumbling around for a few seconds as she seemed to sift through some interior pocket before pulling out a notebook.

"If I knew where Harena was, I wouldn't be here speaking to you." She said bluntly, flipping through a few pages in her journal. "I don't know why you are looking for Harena, but I can tell you that finding it isn't going to be easy. It's an old, ancient empire that once was said to have been the largest one man had ever made." She sighed, reading something from her journal, glancing over to the Tengu. "It seems most people have long forgotten it. Unfortunate, really...but if I may ask why are you interested in it? You said you're not a scholar and I am far to busy to be babysitting someone who would waste my time with idle chatter and can contribute nothing."

"Contribute nothing? You dare imply a Tengu would not carry her weight?" Himeko stated, astonished. How dare this girl! She had to be taught a lesson. Drawing her blade, Himeko did not swing it, merely point it to the ground. Soon, Charlotte would find a strong wind knock into the back of her knees, likely catching her off guard. Another wind from there pushed her into the ground so she found herself in a kneeling pose before long. The Tengu merely laughed, "Kneeling already?" She almost cackled as she sheathed her blade. "Your path is fraught with danger young human. And a Tengu is one of the fastest and strongest in the world. Some say the eldest among us are on level with dragons. You should be begging me to join you."

That was out of the way now. Of course that human could see her worth now! "As for my interest in it, I suppose I could tell you..." Since Charlotte was, if nothing else, her traveling companion from now on. "The Tengu mountain has a great amount of wind storms protecting it's borders from outsiders. One day, however, the storms disappeared without reason and an attack was launched on the city. In the meantime, someone snuck in and stole an ancient artifact that could cause no end of trouble. Not that we care, but we want what is ours."

Ah.

Maybe.

She shouldn't have insulted the flying demon-bird-lady, yes that would have been the smart thing to do. Soon, through some sort of trickery she found something knocking into the back of her knees, and another into the top of her head and forcing her into a kneeling position. Being a bit unprepared, she found herself falling forward a bit, with her face a few inches of the ground as the so called Tengu laughed from above. Well this was embarrassing, but at least she had a great view - brain stop that already.

"Urf what in the name of the havens...!" She was a little upset. More than a little upset as she stood back up. Just what and the world was up with this Tengu!? Not only was she haughty, completely unashamed about showing off her powers to bully someone, but she had some sort of magic and great legs as well!

...wait a minute one of those thoughts were completely irrelevant.

"Well excuuuuuse me princess," Charlotte grumbled, dusting off her cloak. This Himeko better be glad her potions were securely fastened inside of her cloak in strong, treated glass that woudln't break so easily. "For not knowing of the likely exaggerated tales of people I've never heard of." She grumbled, fixing Himeko with a small frown and a glare. "That aside..." Charlotte replaced the notebook in her hands back in her cloak. "Stolen? Hmm...I can't say I can really help with that." She sighed. How troubling. She had hoped this woman would share her scholarly interest, but no. She was just some haughty noble kid or something from some magical race of bird-brains or something. "But if you are searching for Harena I suppose our destinations are the same, at least in theory. It will be a bit of a trek though, as I don't even know where it is or what to even really look for."

"You don't know where it is? Hmmm. If it's not one problem it's another." Himeko muttered as she looked around. Well, now would be a good time to put her wings away. They just disappeared into her back and she walked forward a bit, past Charlotte. "Where now would we learn this? I know nothing about human nations. Were this the Tengu Mountain, I would know where to go, alas Human society is almost a world away. For example, who sells food on the street side? Food should only be sold inside the most lavish of buildings." She said confidently, nodding her head as if it were only common sense.

Himeko looked to Charlotte as if she had the upmost faith in the girl, "So it's decided, you will take the lead. I trust you can find something of use." Her arms crossed and a smile appeared on her face as she shifted the heavy weight of finding Harena's location to the young human.

"If you're looking for a cartographer you've come to the wrong person." Charlotte grumbled, starting to walk back into the town. "I've only been in the region for a month or so at best, and all I have to work with is out dated maps and texts." As much as she was loathe to admit it...she knew very little and so far had been working on scripts and texts that were old, and likely maybe even outdated. The scholars at the tower were loathe to let anything new into their tower, lest it cause problems.

Still...

Even if her attitude was bad it was clear Himeko was at least, trusting her with this. Having someone actually do that for once in her life was a little...well, it was nice. She couldn't actually recall a time where someone had.

"But, I'm nothing if not clever." She smirked. "I do know that apparently there is a large city not far to the south west of here, but before that." She turned to face the Tengu, hands on her hips. "We need some ground rules if we're traveling together. Especially when you're dealing with other people because quite frankly, you're terrible at it." She bluntly stated. "So let me handle the talking. As well...keep those legs of your covered. I don't need the distraction."

She turned, now having returned to the village proper. Now, how should transportation be handled? She would be fine with walking. Easily done with a few physical enhancement potions of varying natures, but buying a horse or paying for passage could work as well...though she had no idea how to ride one.

"What is that? Leave the talking to you? No offense but you tend to keep that grumbling dour look on your face." Himeko said as she sped her way around Charlotte, somehow keeping up nicely with her shoes on. "Despite how I'm acting to you now..." The Tengu took a breath and her look changed fairly drastically. Instead of the confidence and mightiness she tended to keep prior to now, she had a graceful and peaceful look. "My apologies if you thought otherwise, but I can also be quite charming I think. My apologies if my legs are distracting to you, though I don't quite understand how. Perhaps you would like to tell me in detail, dear?"

"...." Charlotte simply gave Himeko her usual somewhat sour expression, a small frown forming on her lips. Why did she even say that? And why was she now trying to be all demure and nice? Was...was she being teased again? Ugh, she left the tower to get away from that. Well, no matter. She would not address it and if Himeko was ignorant then that was that. Moving on, then. That comment about her face irritated her just a bit. Mostly because it was true.

"Ahem," She cleared her throat, shaking her head and stiffly walking past the Tengu with a light huff. "I know I tend to frown a lot, thank you, but at least I don't go around acting like I'm better than everyone. Just don't go around threatening people if we're trying to find information. You attract more flies with honey than vinegar." Charlotte of course, knew there were times when such words were meaningless. Something one had to learn quite quickly in Astril, but most people responded better to kindness unless they had a reason to hide something or be ill-mannered. "That aside, the city I mentioned is some distance away. While I certainly don't mind walking for a few days to reach the destination...it would not be the fastest." She cast a glance over to Himeko.

...she could probably fly, couldn't she?

huhm, how exactly would flying feel?

Come to think of it, she also missed her chance at a feather.

Back to her usual face, Himeko looked at Charlotte like she was saying something weird. "I don't act like I'm better. I am. It's a fact. Tengu live at least three times that of the oldest humans, we are stronger, quicker, we can fly and our studies are far more advanced. That said, you humans are much more versatile than we Tengu and much more populous. Where we only live in our mountain, you live everywhere. Quite honestly, I can see your studies reaching our level quickly, just on account of how many of you there are." The Tengu lectured a bit. Showing her feelings on the relationship between Tengu and Humans. It showed she saw humans had potential, but all in all were not quite to where they should be.

"Well, regardless... Fast ways to get to the city? Hmm..." Himeko mentioned before putting the back of her knuckles to her cheek. There were plenty of ways to get there. Of course, how many of those were viable..... "Hmmmmm.... Huh?" She said with a bit of surprise. "Why do you just stare?"

...this Tengu knew very little of human history, didn't she? The oldest recorded human according to records was at least a thousand years old. Supposedly, at any rate. Still, that was neither here nor there. They needed transportation and while Charlotte wouldn't have minded using her talents to get some coin or passage she was curious as to how exactly the Tengu flew to start with. Plus, it'd give her a chance at one of her feathers. For a few seconds Charlotte weighed the pros and cons of what she was about to ask before sighing. Well, scholarly pursuits required risks.

"Hmm..." She placed a hand on her chin. "You have some sort of ability to control the winds, correct? As well, I am assuming you can fly. Admittedly I do not have much money to spare buying passage," She walked over to Himeko. "I think perhaps the fastest way would be to fly, then."

"Fly, well, yes. Wings that are unable to fly are useless. Much like Chickens." Himeko commented, looking over Charlotte. She wasn't all too sure how to go about this. They could try, but it might leave her a bit on the tired side. "I guess we could try that, though.... I'm not sure how I should try holding you." Without much care about whether Charlotte gave her permission or not, the Tengu lifted the human up by her armpits to test her weight. Fairly light which was good.

As a good test, she put her into the so called, "Princess Carry" and found this would work fairly well so long as she anchored her arms around Himeko's neck. "Yes, well, I could do it like this for a bit, but you will need to trust me and hold on to me." If Charlotte had noticed anything yet, the Tengu was blunt but honest. She'd probably be able to trust Himeko and do as she said.

"E-eh?" She gave the Tengu a deadpan expression as she was lifted by her arms. "...That is not how you carry a human." Charlotte replied. Really, out of all the ways to be carried was she to be manhandled like a doll or something? She knew she wasn't the heaviest or tallest of people but this was just disrespectful. "There is-bwuh? H-hey!" She gave only a small shout of protest before being quickly shuffled into a very familiar carry.

Well...this was...slightly better? She was incredibly close to the Tengu now. Really close. Right, bad thoughts and bad brain don't go there. Well, she supposed she should have expected this situation but it was still just a tad bit uncomfortable. She was...really close to the Tengu like this. Hm. Right, stop thinking about useless things and focus on the science.

"Tsk," Charlotte replied with a huff, crossing her arms. "lets just get it over with." She could trust this tengu...probably. She was the only link she had to this 'Harena' anyways. As long as they had a mutual goal, she could trust her.

Himeko set the girl down. "Yes, well, let's get outside town first. I know a good spot." She said, leading the girl through town. "I'd rather not gather too much attention here." Too be fair, it was a bit too late for that type of thing considering her outfit and shoes. Not that she'd brag about this much (which may or may not be true) but she was also rather beautiful if for no fact aside from the lack of blemishes on her face. It took about twenty minutes, but they made it too an open meadow in the middle of a forest outside town.

For a minute she observed the nice flowers. She didn't see this much in the Mountain. "I will admit I'm jealous you humans can see these beautiful things whenever you want." She took a breath and turned to Charlotte. "I believe that you humans have a saying, 'No time like the present.'" Without another word, the Tengu's wings appeared behind her and she walked over and picked up Charlotte. "Remember to hang on and keep your mouth closed going up. I'd rather not lose the scholar in flight." With that, she bent her knees as if to jump and the next thing Charlotte would know, they were going into the sky.

At a decent distance up, they could look out and see the beauty of nature at an elevated height. Himeko's wings were holding, though they were hovering fairly heavily. "Which way are we going again. Give me a "cardinal direction" and I can go there."

Charlotte silently followed Himeko through town. She was pretty sure she had already failed at the 'drawing no attention' thing, but it was probably not exactly the best idea to point that out. The walk was pleasant, at least. It gave Charlotte a few minutes to jot down a few notes in her notebook regarding a few new species of Flora that she hadn't seen before. Hm. She'd have to see if they had any good alchemical properties at some point. A few rough sketches and small notes later she was standing in the field with Himeko.

"...they are pretty, aren't they?" Charlotte replied. "Shame there are no Moonflowers here." She rubbed the back of her head, gaze lingering on the flowers for a moment. "...I didn't see much of them either, back where I grew up. Aside from the greenhouse or the snow flowers that grew on the craggy cliffs of the mountains." She fell silent for a moment as if remembering something unpleasant before shaking her head. "but never mind that, yes, lets get going."

She let Himeko pick her up, bracing herself for the incoming flight as she wrapped her arms around the Tengu's neck. Hum, curious. She'd be able to observe the wings from here - sort of. She'd need a view of them from the back to figure out how they worked in practice. Well, no matter, she'd find out soon enough -

And in the next instant, she was in the air.

It was beautiful.

Not like the clear skies of Astril, either. The skies there were quite beautiful, if one could get past the frigidness. The Aurora, stars and skies...she had never been this high up in a scenery that wasn't arctic or tundra before.

"South west." She replied to Himeko's question. "Should be there - I've heard it was a fairly large city so we should see it from some distance away."

Himeko nodded and took off fairly quick, picking up the pace. They moved forward fairly rapidly. The air rushed past them and Charlotte was privy to the view as small mountains and trees came and went. It was without a doubt faster than walking. The wind brushing past them definitely gave a good sign of that. A couple of small villages passed and while some of the residents had noticed them, they merely put the two off as a really large bird or something. After about an hour or two of flying, the spotted a big city. Not wanting to pick up any particular attention, the Tengu landed them somewhere outside the city... But not before taking a large nose dive. They of course landed safely, but Himeko was tired after all that flying.

"Here we are. Whatever this city is called. It's pretty big isn't it?" She mentioned looking at the place. It of course was not nearly as huge as Tengu Mountain but for a human city, it was quite amazing! To be honest, "I'm amazed. I've only seen those smaller human places, but to think you could have something quite big. Perhaps I was somewhat wrong about humans." She nodded to herself, finally setting that much aside. She tried to keep herself from looking exhausted at all. Noble pride and all, however, her stomach betrayed her she started to walk to the city... GRUMBLE It rumbled. Himeko looked a slight bit embarrassed. "Such extensive flying makes one a little hungry I suppose...."
