How stupid had she been in fooling herself to thinking that things would go her way; that she would enjoy this party till the end and come out of her revenge plan triumphant. Instead, it had all blown up right in her face in ways she never expected, leaving her much broken that she did before. The breakdowns she’d had before were nothing compared to this heavy stinging in her chest, or the feeling of crying so hard your body couldn’t seem to produce any more tears. The night’s events had taken an emotional toll on her, so much that she felt physically exhausted. And if she was honest with herself, this was no doubt a second heart-wrenching heartbreak next to her mother’s diagnosis and eventual death.

Seeing the man she loved with her ex-best friend had been not only painful, but a humbling, eye-opening experience. If she’d still been secretly holding onto any hope that Kalder continued to harbor feelings for her, then these hopes were now effectively crushed into pieces and thrown away into the abyss to be lost and forgotten. There was no point to try to fight the inevitable any further. The way they seemed so into each other in that couch, and how he’d run straight after Beatrice when she’d confronted them was the final nail in the coffin where the love she had for him would be put to rest for eternity.

As much as it pained her to hit rock bottom, Demetria felt good to finally be able to let out all these negative feelings that had been eating at her since her break-up with Kalder. There was nowhere left to go but upwards now.

Right?

The young woman’s music and her own thoughts had been blasting so loudly that it was only when she felt the vibration of the heavy door closing ripping across the stone floor that she realized she was no longer alone in the tower.

“Jesus fucking Christ. Can’t a person ever have a little bit of privacy in this castle?!” she muttered to herself, quickly wiping away the mascara-tinted tears off her face before facing the intruder. Her saddened face turned into one of shock when she found herself staring right at the reason of her heartbreak.

Fucking great.

"What are you doing here?" she heard Kalder ask her in that stupid soft tone he used to soothe her and that she loved so much, but one that only currently stung and infuriated her further.

“Playing baseball,” Demi immediately spat sarcastically while motioning to the empty room they were in. Like, hello, was what she was doing not obvious enough? Was the snogging session with Beatrice so hot it melted his brain cells? Or had they become frozen after that ice-water bath she’d given him? ‘What are you doing…’ What kind of stupid question was that?

She raised a haughty eyebrow at him. “What the fuck does it look like I’m doing?” the young woman asked, taking off her earphones and placing them on her lap alongside her iPod.

Of course she would reply in kind.

Honestly, Kalder had no idea what to expect at first. For just a moment, he saw the old Demi, vulnerable and alone. But once again, he was thrown back to the other side of the wall she had thrown up as soon as she had realized it was him. Not that he blamed her, but at the same time, he really wished she would cut him some sort of slack. Why couldn't they at least be cordial? Why did things have to spiral out of control like this? Was it just wishful thinking on his part? Even as his mind asked, however, he found a majority of the answers to his questions. They couldn't be cordial because he had betrayed her trust. They spiraled out of control because he wasn't being honest. It was wishful thinking on his part to think he could have things his way with no consequences.

The best thing to do would be to turn around and leave. So Kalder fully entered the room, taking a seat a few feet away from Demi. He knew her tears were a result of his own actions. This probably wasn't the first time he had made her cry. No, as harsh as it sounded, he couldn't think about that right now.

"It looks like you're sitting here, alone, away from everyone so you can wallow in your own thoughts," He replied somewhat dryly. "I don't understand you. You're more than willing to unleash this vengeful, spiteful side in response to anything I say or do, even when I'm trying to reach out to you. What, do you think I like to see you like this?"

Instead of feeling touched by Kalder’s sudden concern about her well being, all his words really did were rub her off the wrong way. ‘He didn’t understand her’... Really? After six months together getting to know each other, he was seriously claiming he didn’t understand her? That stung; she had always thought he was the only one who did. Guess it was all just another mask he put on.

And his questioning of the ‘vengeful, spiteful’ side of her… Was he really that stupid? Not that long ago, she’d caught him right in the middle of an intense makeout session with her ex best friend, which came after weeks of seeing him treat her in public in a way he never did with her, the girl he supposedly loved so much. Was she just supposed to pretend that wasn’t going on and go back to the way things were? If he did, then he really didn’t know her at all.

“Oh wow, if it isn’t the British Dr. Phil here…” Demi replied sarcastically, purposely making an American reference he wouldn’t understand while rolling her eyes in annoyance. “Were you this concerned about 'seeing me like this' or how I was feeling back when you were eating Beatrice’s face off?” she spat venomously, raising an eyebrow and glaring daggers at the blond male sitting at a fair distance from her. “Yeah, that’s what I thought.” she said before he had a chance to reply.

Kalder would be lying if what Demi said didn't hit a sore spot. There was another argument incoming, he was sure of it, but maybe the fact that she hadn't whipped out her wand at him just yet gave him hope. Actually, if he was being honest, despite everything that had happened, just being in the same room as her lifted his spirits. Of course, he wished the situation was different. If only he had her courage, maybe they'd be the ones everyone would be making rumors about, if he had been honest he would be the one taking her to secret spots to kiss and laugh and--God, the regret was starting to weigh on his chest. But he couldn't turn back time, he couldn't undo everything he did. Even if he apologized, she wouldn't believe him.

So he went another route, deciding to voice his thoughts even though he was positive she wasn't going to believe a word he said. "You're wrong, though. I was concerned for you, even when I was with her," He shrugged, leaning back slightly as he placed his hands on his knees. "I don't know what's worse, the fact that no matter what I do, I can't stop thinking about you, or the fact that even with another girl throwing herself at me the only girl I want only glares at me." He paused for just a moment, his eyes searching her for some sort of response, but he decided to continue instead. "I can't fix anything I did, but I need you to know that I miss you. I know you're with Noel...and it drives me insane knowing that he gets to be with you, treating you the way I should have. I wish I was in his shoes, and I know you won't believe me, but I'm sorry. For everything."

Demetria rolled her eyes at the first part of his apology, wanting so badly to believe Kalder but struggling to do so. Her stupid, fragile heart was screaming at her to give him another chance, to trust that the time spent apart had changed him and that he was willing to fight to for their relationship this time around. All she wanted to do was forget the past and build that future together they had dreamt about out loud about months before. But before her heart had any chance to influence her thoughts, her mind went back to that kiss he’d just had with Beatrice, and the way he’d stuck up for her -so different from the way he’d kept Demi a secret. It reminded her that things could have gone so much further had the brunette not stepped in when she did, and the pain she’d felt watching from the sidelines as he shamelessly showed off Beatrice in ways he’d never done for her. Actions spoke louder than words, so how could he be telling the truth, then?

At the mention of Noel, Demi froze, even if she maintained her unbothered exterior. Did everyone know about that now? She sure we hell hoped not. After the rumors had started, they’d been extra careful when meeting up. Somebody must have snitched or something, and Demi had a very good idea as to who had done it and and why.

“Me and Noel? What are you talking about?” she lied, pretending to be insulted by the mere mention of anything going on between them. Hopefully this would distract Kalder from pouring salt to the unhealed wounds or from asking questions he wouldn’t like the answer to… Not that she would confess a single thing, of course. Demi would never admit just how far things between her and Noel had gone, or that no matter how good he was, every time she was with him Kalder was always the one in the back of her mind.
