@Kyelin- I missed it on my first run through, but there is no FTL in this RP, so your jammer for that is useless. Also, please explain a feasible method by which your "weapons jammer" could work, or remove it.

@Bacon- I like the bio. Being captain, however, does entail technical responsibilities as well as legal ones- perhaps you could put in some short statement about a "Chief Navigator" or "Lieutenant"? I'm not going to base your acceptance on this (you're in, no ifs about it), but I think it might be best. Up to you, though.

Also, I'm happy to see another American Colonial Authority vessel. Should go well.

@Embluss:
Okies, fair enough on the FTL, I'll remove that. And weapon jamming would be a transmitted electronic viral attack that would effect the main weapon cooling systems and loading algorithms of the automated run time processes. Basically, if the weapon had a safety mechanism to prevent accidental damage due to the failures of these components, they would be automatically shut off. Of course, if the software OS had automated code repair (which feasibly, any ship with sufficient reliance on sustained and reliable weapons fire would need in this sci fi RP), or technicians on the target ship who could load and install hardened back up copies of the original algorithms, the weapon jam damage could be repaired in, perhaps, a short amount of time.

It's all reliant on how quickly they can detect the problem and neutralize the threat, it's not a fool proof "Guaranteed broken guns" kind of EW suite (more balanced). That's basically how the entirety of the Ljus' Electronic Warfare suites work: Transmitted software viruses that cause errors in the ships automated systems. These viruses could, in theory, also cause ship reacotr shut offs, or even meltdowns, but I excluded those abilities purely because it's not fair to have a ship that could blow up another easily.

@Kyelin, what's the method it uses to transmit that virus, exactly?

A modified wireless transmission that bypasses all installation approvals and safety checks of the receiving ship, as best as it can, ignoring firewalls and security measures. This means that only especially hardened ships (such as capitals or other ECM/EW suite ships) can 100 percent effectively nullify the transmission. Other ships... I guess it would be dependent on how quickly someone picks up on what is going on, and their ability to lock it down before the virus can get to any of it's target systems. Of course, if the full electronic firepower of the Ljus was unleashed at a single ship, something would go down at least temporarily.

Bypassing that would probably require acting on layers of the software beneath the system... maybe the kernel, probably the bootloader or recovery. That would require some pretty screwy security design flaws in these systems. Jamming missile guidance and other electromagnetic-based targeting systems would be the easier way to go, in my opinion, as it doesn't require compromising an entire ship's IT systems.

Also, keep in mind these ships are designed for interstellar space. They have to have intense radiation shielding.

I'm not saying that this stuff won't work, it's just that the first way you tried might not be the best way.

I'd like to get this started by the weekend, but I'm holding out to see if we can get at least a couple more people.

I'd had an idea in the past for a futuristic RP based on Esperanto (which I speak) along the lines of how it appears in Harry Harrison's books.

Could be that there is a small group of people/ship who have dedicated themselves to international relations on-ship/inter-ship - translators/diplomacy. So they have in effect renounced statehood in order to try and keep everything together, acting as go-betweens. Perhaps even a hospital ship or dedicated neutral zone?

Must confess I don't know if this forum has rules about posting language so it might not work, unless
I always post a translation.

Either that or perhaps a xenolinguist who tries to communicate with the aliens?

Apologies for vagueness but I'm just going offline for a bit so I wanted to get some thoughts down. I'll have a proper read of the thread in a bit.

Pretty sure they all speak English on the ships.

Ah that's a shame. Like I say, my original idea was a lot of ships of different languages having communication issues. Maybe one for another thread in the future. ;)

Actually, at the moment the RP allows for ships from the USA, Canada, and EU. I believe there is one ship from Scandinavia and four from north America so far. Even without more language barriers, your idea for a neutral hospital ship could be pulled off pretty well in this RP.

Yeah, that is a good point. And the Ljus already has a targeting jam system in place, so they are all essentially the same thing.

All of the people of those nations learn to speak English, I don't think adding unnecessary language barriers between the settlers is a good idea. It would be an unnecessary pain. Language barriers between the natives and the settlers actually make sense, as they may not even communicate like humans.

I guess It does make sense that, even if they hadn't learned at home, they'd learn knowing they're colonizing with an english-majority fleet. But still, there's use for a mediator group- among men and between species.

@Kyelin, I just asked because I would think if a weapon like that exists then it would be standard protocal of all ships to shut off communication if a vessel is sensed to be hostile so that such a weapon isn't even received.

@Interstellar Shielding, Hurray for natural shields like comets!:D

@Map. I like it. This shall be interesting.

Sorry to keep everything held up, but I want to give those who have stated their interest time to apply. I also feel like we do need a couple more people.

Ship Name: The Savior

Description: The Savior was originally built as a medical ship that could be used on the battlefield to take in wounded soldiers from crippled ships. When the ship returned from its last deployment in the far reaches of the solar system it was chosen as the medical ship for the colonization fleet which was headed off to the Delta Pavonis System. The Savior completely striped down from a field hospital and built up again for civilian use during their travels as well as given housing quarters for the colonists in the lower levels of the ship near where the cargo holds were located. The ship was outfitted with the most state of the art organ cloning tanks and robotic surgery rooms as well as a full botanical wing so that the crew could produce their own medicine.

The Savior boosts only a defensive armament of point defense anti-missile and fighter lasers as any larger defensive weapons would take away from the medical bays within the ship. The vessel is about to hold a large amount of wounded and sick being about to hold on top of their own 10,000 crew population an additional 10,000 which makes the ship seem empty when there aren't that many sick. The ship was also given the capabilities to be able to sustain planetary decent so that it could be set up as a hospital on the planet once the colony was already established.

Population: 10,000
- 2,500 Medical personnel
- 1,000 Scientific personnel
- 632 Engineers
- 5,868 Colonists

Description: The crew of The Savior is a variety crew from almost every nation involved in the colonization with each nation offering up some of their brightest medical minds to be sent to this new world to help allow it to thrive.

Captain Name: Lt. Scott McDouglas

Description: Scott McDouglas gained his military experience in the United Kingdom's navy starting out as a ensign and having to claw and work his way up to be able to captain his own ship. He is now 54 as he commands The Savior on its mission to establish the colony in hopes that he can end his life peacefully as a part of the new human colony. He is the type of captain that always thinks about the well being of his ship before anything else and will always put his crew and anyone under his care first before anything else.

Other Notable Individuals:
- Dr. Jessica Svec - Chief Medical Officer
- Lt. Aron Flynn - First Mate
- David Bayar - Head Engineer
