[IC] Call Of Cthulhu - The Haunting

1915 January Western France.

The chill of the cold winter hits the Investigators as they awake from their day dream. They stand in a trench, the dirt walls two feet higher than themselves, the mud has frozen under their feet yet sometimes the odd foot will go deep inside the cold dirt, sending a chill down the unlucky soul’s spine. The cloth clothes they wear do nearly nothing towards the chilling cold that bites them to the bone, the darkness of the cold night makes it hard to see past few feet in front, this isn't helped by the thick fog that seems to ooze into every nook and cranny. The noise is the worst part, and as the investigators realise where they are the sound of gunfire and explosions fill their ears. The two soldiers, Seumas MacKenzie and Amanda Smith are privates in the British infantry, they hold Lee Enfield’s in their hands and are under the command of Officer Charlie Ashworth.

Officer Ashworth is currently standing on a small ramshackle ladder, that allows troops to look over the trench towards the German lines, his eyes are wide as he looks at the two Privates to his side.

"WHAT ARE YOU IDIOT’S LOOKING AT! THE “ an explosion hits close by, The Officer is still speaking but it’s hard to understand what he is saying. “GET……THE GERMAN FRONT….WHAT ARE YOU DOING GET OUT…. RETREAT…. RETREAT!”

It seems the officer is about to continue, but he is cut short when a bullet ripples through the air and strikes him in the forehead causing the back of his head to explode outward onto the trench floor below.

Sanity Check

Roll a D100, if you roll under your current Sanity that is a pass. If you roll over your current sanity, that’s a fail. A pass on this roll means no sanity loss, a fail means you lose one point of sanity.

Both privates stand in the barren trench, the officer falling onto the frozen floor, the sound of boots can be heard in the direction of the German Front coming closer. In the trench is the dead Officer, a small ramshackle ladder on both sides of the trench, some miscellaneous entrenching tools and various rocks and dirt on the floor. In your inventory is a Lee Enfield rifle (In hand) and that is all.

"Help ma' Boab!" Seumas cries out, flinching back from the explosion of gore. The din of battle echoes in his ears, and he flails his head about, trying to come to terms with where he is.

He turns to face the woman beside him. "We better gie movin', lass!" As he speaks, he looks to his rifle, checking the ammunition.

Seumas sadly finds that his rifle is out of ammunition.
Luckily this is all that is wrong, and the rifle seems to be in good working order.

Seumas checks the end of the rifle for a bayonet, but it does not possess one.

"Crivets! I'm out!" Seumas mutters loudly. His eyes scan the mud for anything useful - a shovel, another rifle, anything.

Seumas fails to find anything new, seeing just the Officers body, a small ramshackle ladder on both sides of the trench, some miscellaneous entrenching tools (Shovels, pickaxe, hammer, nails) and various rocks and dirt on the floor.

As Seumas looks around the trench a familiar face tumbles from the top of the trench beside him Sofie Meckel. She is unarmed with nothing in her inventory. She does know however that a large group of Germans are quickly advancing on the Investigators current Trench.

Sofie, gets off of the extremely muddy ground and stares at her surroundings and quickly scans her mind for any information on the incoming german group, Hoping that she can hopefully remember before she is killed by the steel arrows of a unknown number of germans

Sofie Meckel remembers that there where between 12-20 German soldiers 5 minutes or so behind her. They all had Bolt action rifles with bayonets affixed, and where yelling something in German

Sofie Meckel Cusses under her breath. wishing that she asked her father to teach her german, Runs toward the ladder and attempts to climb it, hoping that she could use her lucky 5 minutes to run off before the Germans arrive

Amanda Smith seemed to be in a daze from the scene before her, before the third person dropping in grabbed her attention. Yes, right, they needed to escape. Needed to retreat, leaving the corpse of their captain behind. Private Seumas was out of ammo - what about their commanding officer? It would be wrong to disturb a corpse though, and staring at it for too long seemed like a bad idea. But oh, these were desperate times. Just - focus on the torso, it was muddy but intact after all.

Sofie Meckel Scurrys up the ladder, In the distance, an Allied Trench sits. The fog obscures vision however.

Amanda Smith searched the body of the deceased Officer, in a hip holster lies a Webley Revolver. A wallet inside his breast pocket shows a wife and child. A pocket watch hangs from a small chain inside his Officers jacket.

Sofie quickly climbs up the ladder successfully, and quickly views the distance infront of her attempting to see through to the area ahead of her, trying to quickly break the fog of war quickly as possible so she gets a good head start

Amanda takes the revolver - there's no point in taking the wallet, as she doesn't have anywhere to put it. The watch is nice but again, pointless to take. She checks the revolver to see if it's loaded with any bullets.

She then notices the person who had fallen in appears to be gone. Admittedly, she had been preoccupied with her searching, but has no idea where they went to or even if they had been an ally.

Amanda finds that the revolver is fully loaded, the bullets are rare hollow point rounds. Causing more damage to the target.
The gun itself seems to have a pearl handle and a gold trim, an expensive weapon that packs a punch.

Amanda also glances back at the body, noticing something she hadn't before.
A hand grenade is placed snuggly underneath the Officers leg.

It makes perfect sense to Amanda that their commander had such a nice gun hidden away - and loaded to boot. It seems so nice - almost a waste in her hands. She's not the best shot. She's not quite as sure about the man in the trench beside her. Ask him perhaps?

It's then she notices the grenade.

Of course she grabs it. Again, not the best throw, but can it really be so difficult throwing it up and out of the trench? Not far, just enough to blast away anyone getting too close. They're in this pit for a reason after all. Grenade gripped in one hand, she holds out the other to her fellow soldier, Seumas.

"Are you any good with a handgun?" For some reason, she can't actually say his name. Of course she knows it. Just not on her tongue at the moment.

"Lass, if yer offerin' a proper weapon I cannae turn ye down," Seumas says, slinging the Lee Enfield over his shoulder and taking the revolver. "Private what's-'er-name seems to have an idea, let's get after her!" He then climbs the ladder after Sofie, checking his surroundings from above the trench.

As Seumas quickly scarpers up the rickety ladder Sofie has made it to the trench to her dismay however the trench is occupied by three German soldiers, each wearing gasmasks and holding rifles in hand. Their backs are facing her and it may be possible they haven't spotted her yet.
Suddenly the clumped dirt at the top of the trench gives way and sweeps Sofie's feet away!

She luckily jumps backwards, avoiding falling into the trench below. But the element of surprise has been lost, the Germans begin to turn.

Fail

Sofie's legs fall from underneath her, her body tumbling down in to the trench. She lands on her feet, but the element of surprise is gone, and the Germans begin to turn towards the ruckus.

Seamus fails to see what happens, barely spotting anything past a few feet. he glances behind him to find the German infantry nearly at the trench he was just in. The rifles in their hands are aimed towards him.

Sofie Meckel Immediately jumps backwards avoiding the clump of dirt falling beneath her and silently thanking God in her mind. She turns and immediately runs the other way upon spotting the German Soldiers immediately running towards the other trench, hopefully before the German soldiers turn around and see her

Amanda follows Seumas up the ladder, hoping that what she found would be enough to get them all away intact. She has never desired a shrapnel amputation. The private he mentioned - was that who had fallen in? She tried to remember her face because they've all fought together for so long - but like the name of the man before her, she can see it but cannot describe it. Well, she'll see it again in a bit.

The fog is thicker than it seemed from the bottom of the trench, as she cannot see anything, she realizes. There's fighting still going on, of course, but it all seems distant and far away somehow.

Sofie Meckel quickly begins to run, she hears shouts behind her in German and a bullet whizzes past her. Before she can even think of feeling how lucky she is..

Sofie Meckel collapses to the floor, her face hitting the dirt hard. Before she can react, a barrel is placed against the back of her head.

Amanda Smith reaches Seumas MacKenzie at the top of the ladder, she doesn't even see her attacker as..

Amanda Smith's body takes the brunt of the bullets, but as she slumps down, Seumas MacKenzie is now left out in the open and outgunned. A German officer takes a shot at Seumas but misses. The other 3 soldiers where not as unlucky.

As the bullets hit the investigators, they jump up from their beds in a cold sweat. What a horrible nightmare, and who where those people?
The investigators remember that today was when they are to meet with a John Smith, they had read in the paper a day or so ago that he needed a small group of individuals to help see to a house he has recently bought. What caught the investigators eye was the house itself, the Old Corbitt House. Its rumoured to be haunted, and how could the Investigators pass up checking it out?

John Smith expects the investigators their by 10, as its half 9 now it might be best to begin getting ready.
