Thayva, with the corrected papers clutched in her arms, followed Serapis to their fourth-floor apartment. Their kitchen, though small, held a wood-burning stove, cabinets galore, and a closet for herbs and another designed to keep their few meats cold and prevent them from spoiling.
As her husband pulled out what he needed, Thayva went to the herb closet. A large selection hung drying from the ceiling, while others already dried and crushed sat on shelves, stored in glass jars. She grabbed the few herbs she thought would go well with chicken, and placed them on a counter. She went to pop out a cork in one of the bottles, but stopped, listening. An odd noise floated up the stove’s flue, which connected to the kitchens on the ground floor. Shouts. Screams.
“Serapis!” Thayva hissed a moment before the other dracon declared their need downstairs.
She ran after him down to the lower level. The worst possibilities ran through her mind.
As soon as Serapis moved aside enough for her to see the chaos, she stopped. She stared for a long moment, her mouth open slightly in shock as Serapis brought an end to the various spells buzzing through the air. Relief flooded through her that it was not something worse. Then, when the situation sunk in, her nose crinkled, and her lips pulled back in an angered snarl that showed off her menacingly sharp teeth.
She stepped up beside Serapis as he demanded information, and crossed her arms, her angry gaze scanning the orphans.
Looks of shock, panic, and amusement dominated the faces before her, from human to lizardfolk alike. She tried to pick out any expressions that looked guilty among the messy faces, but could find none that especially stood out.
When none of the students offered any answers to Serepis’ questions, the female elf spoke, momentarily gaining Thayva’s attention.
“They planned it well,” a battle-scarred human offered softly after the elf--a well-seasoned warrior male who trained the orphanage’s human children in combat. He clasped his hands behind his back. “They waited for the changeover.”
“Thayva,” Serapis said, gaining her attention, “what’s your take on all of this?”
Thayva raised her chin slightly, still eyeing the children. “My take, Serapis,” she began loudly, her dark tone echoing through the now silent dining hall. It seemed that everyone had held their breath, waiting to hear what the two had to say. “Is that it will be difficult to impossible to distinguish between those involved, and those covering for their friends or themselves, if anyone stepped forward. I say, let them all stay here until they’ve cleaned this room to a sparkle. After all, if they can work together to make this mess, they can do the same to clean it up. And, to make up for any missed practices, add an extra day of classes and training this week.”

Serapis listened to his wife's take on the situation. "Not a bad idea." He raised his voice. "Attention, everyone! We don't know who did this, and it doesn't matter! Every student present here will stay here during an hour of their free time tonight to clean this place up! And I want it to be better than it was before!"

Jorn winced at that announcement, but then thought about it. Less time for amorous advances from a certain female dwarf could only be a good thing. At least until this little crush ran its course.

"And if anyone refuses or shirks their cleaning duties, they will have their normal chores doubled for a month! Understood?! This is absolutely unacceptable behavior! Not only does it reflect poorly on us as a school, but it shows us that there are some students who are more interested in abusing their powers than using them for good! The only good news is that you all have some time today before you have to clean up this mess, so for now, please proceed with what your regular schedules. If anyone wants to confess or has information you think I should know, tell me as soon as you can."

Aurelian briefly considered it, but then he thought better. Now was not the time to anger the other students. Although he was happy that the lizardfolk got some comeuppance.

Serapis turned back to his wife. "How was that? And do you think Arjun had anything to do with it? I'd hate to think that our son was in on it."

The groans of around one hundred children echoed through the room, mingling with many a distressed, “What?” The voices of Kia and her friends rose with the others. Yet, a grin still threatened to pull at the young elf’s lips. She only hoped no one would come forward, what with the punishment already declared. After all, she had noticed a few others not originally in on the plan joining in the fun. To turn Kia and her friends in now meant placing blame on nearly a quarter of the other magic users.
“Well, you heard them!” A male dwarf, splatters of food in his uncharacteristically thin beard, shouted. His gruff voice carried above the protests. “Get to your training lessons, then report back here the moment you’re done with massage therapy!”
Thayva looked to her husband when he addressed her.
“That was perfect, hon.” She placed a hand on his shoulder and leaned slightly into him. She watched as the other staff began to usher the orphans out of the dining hall. She huffed at Serapis’ question. “I hope not. But he is your son.” She grinned, then sighed. “The three of us will have to have a bit of a chat this evening.” Her eyes locked on their son as she picked him out of the crowd as only a mother can. “Find out if he, at the very least, saw anything important.”

"I'll investigate." Serapis angrily approached Arjun. "Son!"

The young dracon looked up at his father, suddenly feeling very small." Y-yes, dad?"

"Did you have anything to do with this-this... atrocity?!"

"No, dad! I swear it! I-I don't know who did it, but it might have been a bunch of female elves. I think I saw a few of them moving away as a group just before the food went crazy!"

He thought about it for a moment. "Very well, but if we find out that you had something to do with it, you're going to have to be like the rest of the children here for a month."

Serapis turned back to Thayva, and Arjun let out a sigh of relief as he ran to join the other students in their physical training.

"I don't think he did anything, love."

----------------

Aurelian and the other males went their own way, separate from the females. Although some activities allowed for overlap, running laps was not one of them. He had already removed his shirt, which was an option about half of the human or human-like males chose to do for physical training. Jorn kept his shirt on, not wanting to compare his small halfling musculature to those of the larger races.

“... Or you could do it now,” Thayva muttered under her breath as Serapis shouted to Arjun. She sighed
Many of those still in the dining hall stopped, eyes turning to the two in curiosity before the other staff members ushered the children out.
Thayva crossed her arms as her husband returned to her and gave his report. “I figured as much. Though, it would have been wiser, I think, to speak to him in private, not public, dear," she advised kindly. "I would imagine the ire of the other orphans is not something he would like to attract, even if he did know something.”

* * *

Kia glanced over her shoulder as she heard the headmaster call to his son, but the crowd quickly forced her away.
The conversations buzzed around the food fight, some speaking of it highly and others wishing ill to whomever had caused it.
As the elf girl had hoped, it had definitely made an impact. It would be the talk of the house for at least the next couple weeks.
With adrenaline still running through her veins from the excitement, she followed the rest of the girls her age to their changing rooms, and changed into her clothes for their physical training, clothes which were now considerably cleaner. Laundry was going to be fun that week.
Kia eagerly headed to the track. Other girls already ran along the indoor space. A fairly large oval, the track, through magic and no small amount of elbow-grease, changed from day to day, mimicking a different terrain each training session. Today, sand coated the track, and a few cacti grew out of it.
All that’s missing is a couple--oh, there they are! Kia watched two tumbleweeds roll across the center of the track, then blow in front of one of the girls already running laps.
As one of the two female trainers shouted at the girls with advice, Kia began to stretch before joining in the run.

"I had to know, Thayva. It may have been a bit sudden, but it was better to get that out of the way now than to stay in suspense. Still, you may have a point." Serapis replied. "I... suppose that this and other incidents have been getting the better of me lately. Its always like this, one thing after another."

------------------

Aurelian staggered back in the little ring. His opponent was a brown-skinned lizardfolk, about his size. Wrestling was just one of many sports available at the orphanage, especially for those who wanted to go into martial professions one day. The rules of the match were such that claws and bites weren't allowed, but almost anything else was fair game as long as it didn't lead to serious injury. He pushed against his opponent, sending the reptilian backwards, his clawed feet struggling to find purchase in the arena's sandy floor.

Track was Laura's least favorite activity in gym, if not the entire orphanage. Though she was quite fit for a female dwarf, her relatively bulky frame was far from ideal for the lengthy running required by the track. Stumbling over a tumbleweed, she was almost a lap behind Kia. By now, her feet started to burn, which was unsurprising given the friction of the surface underfoot.

Meanwhile, Jorn kept up his pushups, glad that Laura wasn't there to see that he was having a hard time with them.

Thayva sighed. “That’s the thing about trouble, love.” She tenderly touched his arm. “It’s a coward and always travels in packs.” She glanced to the mess of the dining hall, seat cushions and tables splattered with all manner of foodstuffs. “At least this place will get a good washing. And besides,” she looked back to her husband with a small grin. “I’m sure you’d get bored if there wasn’t something going on.”

* * *

A group of girls who had already finished their laps had begun to form near the center of the track, most doing stretches and other warm-ups as they waited for their martial arts instructor to arrive, Laya among them. A couple other groups had slowly begun to form around the room near various forms of equipment as well, each awaiting their own teacher as the remainder of the girls completed the course.
Kia loved the run. At least, on the days they did not choose the tundra terrain. Though they eliminated the chill of it, the slickness of the magical ice and snow drove her mad. On the contrary, the feel of the warm sand beneath her feet sent a thrill through her, even though it tired her leg muscles a bit faster. But her favorite, she had to admit, was the jungle.
Noticing Laura further behind her, Kia slowed and ran backwards until she jogged beside the dwarf.
“Come on, Laura!” Kia encouraged, pumping a fist in the air. “You can do better than that!”

* * *

Conned into the wrestling section by another of the students, Nick watched Aurelian and the lizardfolk, waiting for his turn in the ring with the winner.
“Watch your left!” he called to Aurelian. Whether he hoped the boy would win more so he would not have to face the lizardfolk himself, or so the human would feel the thrill of success, he could not quite say for sure.

Serapis let out a long sigh. "We have so much else going on. And now this. In the long run, it is nothing. Just some food stains and a childish prank. I-It's more like the straw that broke the camel's back, you know?"

He returned her caress, gently rubbing her arm. "Alright. You seem to be on top of this one. I'll defer to your judgment on this. What should we do now?"

----------------

"Dwarves are very fast..." Laura replied, getting more and more winded. "... in short bursts! We're sprinters! Yeah, that's it! We don't need to run much in our mines and our... quarries." She wasn't keeping up very well, but Kia's mild taunt encouraged her to speed up. "Just be glad that it isn't ice today! Your little feet would freeze like last time!" The run eventually came to an end as the course's magic was turned off for the day.

"Say, girls. Guess what time it is?" Laura gave them a vicious looking smile. "I see the martial arts instructor!"

----------------

"No back-seat fighting! I've got this one!" Aurelian attacked the lizardfolk again, but was shoved back. Even so, their collision had been painful, eliciting a hiss from the lizardboy. Jorn watched with some interest as they continued to ram each other. Finally, the sparring came to an end, with the two young males staggering off in a draw. By this point, Jorn was busy doing sit ups. He was too warm to care that others might see his comparatively scrawny chest, and was relieved to get the now-stinking shirt off. Way too much perspiration.

Thayva sighed sadly and nodded. “I know, love.” She gave a kind smile when he handed the reigns of the situation over to her. She thought for a moment, tapping a finger against her snout.
“Kryel,” Thayva turned to a lizardman who had just bent to pick up a puree-crusted cushion that had somehow made it beneath the serving tables.
While most of the staff had left to usher the children to their training, a few remained behind to at least clean up the serving tables.
“Yes, ma’am!” The lizardman dropped the cushion, and turned to her, standing at attention.
“Can you and the others handle things down here for a little while?” Thayva glanced over as two dwarves, one female and the other male, started scrubbing away at the table section they usually manned. “And have cleaning supplies prepared for the children.”
“Of course.” The lizardman nodded.
“Thank you.” Thayva smiled at him, then returned to her husband. “I’m sure the staff can handle things here for a few minutes, and the children went to their training early, which gives us time to finish our own lunch. It will be easier to think on a full stomach, than an empty one. So, shall we?” She gestured to the way that would lead them back to their kitchen.

* * *

“Excuses, excuses!” Kia kept pace easily with Laura. She growled at the dwarf’s comment. “Oh, shut up. I still finished before you. So there.” She stuck her tongue out playfully.
When the sand of the track pulled out from beneath them, forming a cloud above their heads that burst into golden sparks that snuffed out before they could fall to the girls’ heads, Laya and Ilyrana came to join them.
“Best part of the day, isn’t it, Laura?” Tor stepped up beside the dwarf, her sharp teeth bore in a grin. “What do you say you and I go a couple rounds?”

* * *

“Okay, okay!” Nick raised his hands as if in defense and took a step back.
In another section where the younger children had gathered, the mute halfling, who had finished his own laps long before the others, quietly waited in a corner, hoping to not be noticed as the other kids showed off their skills to each other. A lizardboy and dracon sparred with each other, with a few of the others standing around and shouting encouragement. A couple humans were trying to show each other some of the various proper fighting stances, which soon broke out into an argument.

"Yes, my love. Just a quick bite, nothing more. I'm not sure I have much of an appetite after seeing so much food splattered all over the place." He was tempted to recount his days growing up, about how he had little to eat during a famine, and how he was particularly offended when food was simply wasted like that. Before long, they reached the kitchen.

"Training should be almost half-over, Thayva. Hmm. Arjun usually comes up here for his daily massage, so I can get the food ready if you want me to. You'll be busy soon enough." For a dracon family, that sort of caress was strictly for a mother and her children. Male dracons simply did not do that.

----------------

Laura grinned at that. "Just a couple? Are you made of glass or something?" She got up and stretched. "Don't worry, I'll go easy on you girls." For this part of the training, mats were laid out by the instructors, who then gave the students some room. It wasn't as formal as an arena, but they only had so much room. Laura assumed a combat stance, betraying her cockiness. "Okay, who wants to get beaten by me first?"

----------------

Aurelian had finished his fight. It was a draw, and as expected, his muscles were an aching mess. Still, he wasn't unhappy. He sat down next to nick, recovering from his bout. Jorn sat next to them as well, holding his right foot in his hands. As a halfling, he had large feet for his size, and while adults of his species were famous for never using footwear, he had not yet developed the level of durability needed to not complain about it. Not that he'd ever consider using footwear. A halfling like him would much rather eat mud before doing that.

"Ooh, look, a lizardfolk and a dracon. Battle of the reptiles."

Thayva gave a knowing nod and followed him toward the hidden passages and stairwells that led back to the kitchen. “I know. Perhaps we should add a lecture to the plans again about wasting food.”
Though she had lived in a bit more prosperous part of the region during the famine Serapis had spoke about on a couple occasions, rations had still been well watched. The sheer amount of wasted food splattered over the dining hall was a sickening thought indeed, in more ways than one.
When they reached the kitchen, she began pulling out a few items from the cabinets in preparation. She looked to him at his offer, and smiled warmly.
“Thanks, hon.” She went to him and gave him a loving nuzzle. “But, like you said, training is almost half over. We can get it made quicker together, and maybe have enough time to actually sit down and eat.”

* * *

Tor laughed at Laura’s taunt. “It’s not me I’m worried about, my little dwarf friend!” She gave Laura’s back a good-mannered bat with her thick tail. She rolled her eyes at the dwarf’s challenge. “Alright, you cocky mountain-dweller. I see a free mat.” She nodded toward one of the mats as a couple other girls started brawling on one near it. “Or are you too chicken?” She put her hands under her armpits and made a sound somewhere between a reptilian hiss and a clucking chicken.
Kai had eagerly stepped away from Laura and Tor, instead finding a group more of her build beneath the watchful eye of a martial arts instructor, and waited her turn on the mat. The teacher called out instructions every now and again, even stopping the fight a couple times to correct the girl’s forms, before Kia finally got her chance.

* * *

“Better than last time.” Nick grabbed a waterskin he had brought with him and tossed the remaining bit to Aurelian. Bare-chested like many of the other boys, he leaned back, his chest still a bit glossy from the exercise routine he had done before observing Aurelian’s fight.
He glanced over at Jorn. “Still aching?”
Nick’s attention shifted to the dueling reptiles, a grin on his face at the other boy’s words.

To the mute halfling’s dismay, one of the instructors caught him lurking and ushered him onto a mat with a human a bit younger than him--five, maybe six years old--so their height and build matched up better. His opponent still had a small amount of baby fat around his face, making his cheeks pudgy, and his dark hair was a flyaway mess.
The halfling suppressed a groan, and raised his fists in a defensive stance as the other child did the same.
“Keep those fists up, and attentions on your opponent!” the instructor, a halfling himself, reminded.
With that, the human lunged forward awkwardly, trying out the newest attack the halfling boy had seen one of the teachers demonstrate.
The halfling nimbly ducked beneath the boy’s fists and slid behind him. With both hands, the halfling shoved the human’s back, making him stumble toward the edge of the mat.

Serapis gave her a brief nuzzle. "Alright. No time to waste, then." He laid out some bread and fruit to start, then got some beef out. He put it on a fire to cook for a few minutes. "We're almost out of mutton, so this will do us for now. Maybe we can send Arjun to the market in a day or two. It'll be good for him to get out, maybe with some of the other children."

-------------------

Laura laughed at the clicking hiss. Or was it a hissing cluck? "I don't know what the heck kinda sound that is, but it's not gonna help you!" She attacked, trying to wrestle Tor to the ground. "I'm gonna tie that pretty little tail of yours into a knot!"

"Alright Kia. Now, can you do it again? Imagine an hobgoblin charging towards you. What do you do then?" The instructor asked. "Show me what you'd do in that situation.

-------------------

Aurelian drank some of the water, then wiped some sweat from his brow. "Thanks." He handed the waterskin to one of the other males, a young but already burly dwarf.

"Yeah, but that's to be expected" Jorn said, stretching his foot out. "I don't know what they'd think of this back in halfling lands. From what they've told me, halflings my age are either in school or working the fields, not exercising this hard."

The reptiles fought on for a while, the dracon having been pushed onto his back by the lizardfolk. The lizard charged at the dracon, but then, the dracon put one of his feet on the lizard's chest and pushed up, using the lizardfolk's momentum to send him falling forward. Both got up and called an end to the fight, a narrow victory for the dracon.

When her husband set to work, she grabbed a chunk of cheese coated in wax, and cut off a couple chunks. She looked to Serapis when he addressed her again.
She nodded. “This weekend, perhaps? I’ll get a notice put up and see how many would like to go.”
Thayva covered the uncut cheese with a thin cloth and stored it in the coolest, driest of their cabinets.

* * *

“What, you never heard of a basilisk?” Tor braced herself at the first indication of the dwarf’s charge. She pushed against Laura, keeping herself upright, and tried to use the dwarf’s weight against her to force her to the mat.

“I’d use a hex to root to its spot!” Kia grumbled at the instructor, and wiped a bead of sweat from her brow.
Her opponent rushed her, trying to mimic the movements of a hobgoblin. The other girl only succeeded in looking like a glorified penguin.
Kia tried to jump out of the way, but the other girl, an older halfling named Jennet, caught her off guard with a well-placed strike, then used Kia’s surprise to tackle her.
The elf shouted as the halfling brought her down. She groaned when the halfling got back to her feet and offered Kia a hand up.
“And thus,” Kia began, clutching her chest, her voice sorrowfully dramatic, “the great elf magician was defeated by the mighty queen of the hobgoblins! And all because her instructor refused her the use of magic.” She made a show of writhing in the throes of death, then fell still.

* * *

Nick shrugged at Jorn’s comments. “You think working the fields isn’t hard exercise?”

The human child spun back toward the mute boy, and tried again, implementing a bit more tactic. But the halfling easily ducked and dodged every punch and kick, a couple times managing to bet behind the other child, giving him a few seconds before the human realized where his opponent had gone.
The halfling backed up and sidestepped, predicting the boy’s movements by his body language a second before he tried to land a blow. He glanced over when another set of boys demanded the instructor’s attention, but still managed to sidestep once more.
The laughter of one of his usual dwarven tormenters rang behind him. The dwarf from the hall. “What, forget how to use your fists, too, twinkle-toes?”
The halfling’s hands clenched tightly, the anger on his face making his opponent falter.
“Or do Brownies dance, instead of fight?”
That was the last straw. Anger fuming on his face and raging in his eyes, the mute boy spun around and lunged on the dwarf before the stocky boy could blink.
The dwarf tried to shake him off, to throw punches or pry the halfling’s fingers from around his thick neck as the child swung onto his back, but the halfling easily avoided him.
A couple of the instructors, drawn by the dwarf’s shouts, ran toward the two.
The dwarf stumbled, and the halfling wrapped his arm tightly around the dwarf’s throat, ignoring the warnings of the instructors. He still had a couple seconds.
The halfling, using what strength he had combined with the power of weight, threw himself backwards as hard as he could, his grip around the dwarf's throat holding true. The dwarf made a choking sound, and fell back.
The halfling released the dwarf and landed on all fours a foot from where the dwarf fell, hard, on his back.

"Yeah, that works. Maybe we could have them gather some things from the nearby woods too. Teach them to forage. Get them outside of the orphanage. Good for them to have a change of pace, you know?" Serapis replied.

----------------

"That's a cockatrice, if I'm not mistaken" Laura replied. "But you could roar like a dragon, and it wouldn't help!" Laura pulled out from Tor's grip, getting back up on her feet. Eventually, a human instructor broke up their sparring match, as it had gone on too long. They had to share the mats, after all.

----------------

"A hex might help if you could cast it in time, but what if you were out of mana? What would you do then?" The instructor inquired.

"It's hard exercise, but one which doesn't involve getting hit, kicked, or thrown to the ground" Jorn explained. His attention was diverted by the fight between the halfling and the dwarf. He was visibly overjoyed to see a fellow halfling do so well against a dwarf, especially considering the latter's reputation for military prowess against the stereotype of halflings being rather inept at combat.

“Wonderful idea, dear.” Thayva smiled at her husband. “I’ll see who I can get to volunteer to go with them and teach them the basics. I’ll get both messages made later this afternoon.” She glanced out the window in the kitchen, the clouds making it difficult to gage the time. “Well, unless something else more pressing comes up, of course. How’s it coming?” She nodded to the beef Serapis roasted on the fire of the stove, the smell of it making her salivate.

* * *

“I said what I meant, and I meant what I said!” Tor stumbled forward when Laura pulled from her grip. “They’re basically the same thing.”
Tor sighed sadly when their match was brought to an end without either of them declared the victor. Tor offered a hand to Laura. “Good match!”

* * *

Kia grumbled unintelligibly under her breath at the instructor’s questions. “Run and wonder what the freak I did to be anywhere near a hobgoblin, let alone make it mad enough to attack.”

* * *

The young halfling straightened as quickly as he could, his body posed to strike the dwarf again against his better judgment as his tormentor rolled onto his stomach and got to his feet.
A smug smile spread across the halfling’s face at the rage, anger, and humiliation swimming in the dwarf’s eyes and turning his face cherry red.
The dwarf’s rage visibly deepened at the halfling’s expression. “You wretched little Brownie!” he roared wildly, and sprung at the halfling.
The mute boy made to sidestep, his muscles quicker than the dwarf’s, then to lunge again, but the dwarf’s enraged battle cry cut short when one of the dwarven trainers all but tackled him then grabbed his shoulders firmly, and a dracon gripped the nape of the halfling’s shirt, making him jerk awkwardly back.
“THAT’S ENOUGH!” the dracon bellowed, baring his fangs at the boys in warning. “Unless the both of you want to be sent to the headmaster for punishment for fighting outside the mats. After this afternoon’s stunt, something tells me he isn’t in the most merciful of moods.”
The halfling boy scowled and crossed his arms in a disgruntled pout, ignoring the murderous glare the dwarf, panting hard through gritted teeth, kept on him.
“A’right, ya lot!” a burly human called into the chaos of boys, his volume amplified by a bit of magic. “Training’s up. Report to the message therapists immediately!”

* * *

Nick shrugged at Jorn. “Call you Jorn, the great halfling warrior, and have you protect their crops?” he answered distractedly, watching the fight between the two young boys.
When the excitement ended and the training session was brought to a close, Nick eagerly got to his feet, his muscles protesting his speed.
“Is it just me,” he offered Aurelian a hand up, “or are these sessions getting longer by the day?”

"The food? It seems to be cooking just fine. Good thing too. I think we're both kinda hungry." Serapis replied. "There's probably nothing more to worry about today. Well, nothing more than what we've already dealt with."

-----------------

The students divided into two groups, male and female. This next part of the day was one which called for such a division, given the lighter clothes they would be wearing. It would not do for the young males and females to be around each other while so dressed.

"They only seem to be getting longer" Aurelian replied, his right hand holding onto his left shoulder blade. "Either that, or they're making them harder. Good thing we're getting our rubdowns now. My back is killing me."

"Hey, it's not like crops aren't important. You like eating, right?" Jorn replied, not really in the mood to argue. Soreness combined with exhaustion to take the fight out of him.

Laura was particularly happy to get her massage today. Not only did she enjoy the feeling of it, but she also enjoyed the fact that it was a chance to be around only the other girls. "Did you really say that about hobgoblins, Kia? What if an actual hobgoblin came to this orphanage?" She gave a smile. "They might think you have something against them."

The massage therapists were entirely female adults of all races. It was decided early on in the orphanage's history that females would be more parental and universally seen as less intimidating for the purposes of relaxing the students, even if a few of the staff thought that Serapis' claims of maternal instincts were perhaps a bit condescending. As usual, they gave the students their instructions in each of the rooms, which were divided between male and female students.

Jorn and the others knew the drill, yet it was repeated anyway. Possibly for the benefit of any newcomers. The head masseuse of the boys room was an elven female, looking very much the stereotypical wood elf with her long ears, green eyes, and blonde hair. Even her short green dress seemed to scream "nature." To a degree, it was a show, but the quasi-motherly image was useful for winning over the students.

"Alright boys. Change into your shorts if you have them. Those of you with loincloths, keep them on! That means you, dracons, lizardfolk, and other reptilians! Shirts and the like go in the wash. You get one of a matching size when you are done here." For many of the males, this was unnecessary, given that many had already changed in their gym class, and were already down to shorts. Their garments would be taken and washed, and fresh shirts and pants were already folded and waiting for them to put on at the end of their massage session.

The massage tables were already set up with a pillow at the head of each, a towel on the side, and a small table with some very basic oils and the like. It wasn't anything fancy, nor was it meant to be. Apart from mimicking similar arrangements in the dracon lands, the treatment was intended to be a break from an otherwise very rigorous schedule as well as a way of helping the students deal with stress and strain from the intense exercise of the previous timeslot.

Given the fact that the students in each room greatly outnumbered the therapists, they had to take turns with their rubdowns. Many of the females there did other jobs around the orphanage, and only the leads and a few others did this job as their sole occupation.

For his part, Arjun was downstairs with the other males at the moment. He was torn between going back upstairs to his mother, or staying with the other males. On one hand, he definitely thought that Thayva did a better job with massages. She knew him as well as a mother could, and she was obviously used to dealing with dracons, far more so than many of the females present. On the other hand, he enjoyed spending time with some of his friends, and they often took their turn together, lying next to each other. It was a chance to talk as well as relax.

Thayva laughed at Serapis’ last comment. “Don’t say that, love.” She stepped up beside her husband and placed a hand on the counter. “The day’s not over yet. You’ll jinx it! And with our luck, who knows what could happen?” She gave him an amused smile.

“Or both,” Nick said exasperatedly to Aurelian as the boys headed to the massage therapist sections. He sighed as the staff spouted out the usual instructions for the sake of anyone who had not yet heard them, even though, by his calculations, there was no one new since the previous day’s training.

Kia had been one of the first girls to change out into their standard clothing for message therapy.
Ilyrana and Laya joined her a moment before Laura approached.
Kia shrugged at the dwarf. “The instructor was annoying me. Besides, there aren’t any here, so I don’t need to worry about it.” She stepped toward the door leading to the room where the massage tables had been set up. She added over her shoulder, “Everyone who heard me say that will probably forget about it by tomorrow, anyway.”
“Good practice today, besides that, no?” Ilyrana said to Laura, hanging back with the dwarf as Kia went to look for any available tables.

Serapis returned the smile. "Yeah, at this rate, a dragon will land on the roof before dinner."

Aurelian lay down on his stomach, waiting for one of the females to come around to him. It would be a couple of minutes, as everyone was still getting settled in. Eventually, one of the elven women came around to him and began rubbing his back in gentle circles, trying to find knots and tense points. She began working them out with her thumbs, loosening the tight muscles. The other tables on either side of him were still empty, although one was missing a pillow, as the lizardwoman who staffed that table was busy fluffing it.

The other table was staffed by a female human with short, auburn hair. "Come on boys! Time's wasting!"

Jorn did a few stretches. "Okay, hold on!" he replied as the woman gave him a sigh.

"You should have stretched at the end of the training session, Jorn. We have these sessions to help keep your bodies in the best shape possible. We don't just invest in your minds, you know." She repeated, as if from a pamphlet. "It is out job to equip all of you with the sharpest minds and strongest bodies possible before you leave here, to give you every advantage possible. We don't want your training to be slowed by sore muscles, and we don't want you to be in pain from the intense exercise. Plus, its good for muscle growth and helps recovery from strenuous exertion." Yeah, definitely memorized from a program.

"Yeah, good practice" Laura said. "Come on, I see a couple of tables. I just hope I don't get a lizardfolk this time." She thought about her statement. "Not that I'm speciest, they're not always careful with their claws. Then again, they give the best back scratches, don't they?" She lay on her back, resting her head on the pillow. A moment later, a dracon female showed up.

"Hi there, dear. Where would you like me to begin?"

"My feet, definitely" Laura said, stretching her short little dwarven toes.

“And now if one does,” Thayva began, turning to a cupboard, “I’m blaming you, dear.” She opened the cupboard and took out two handle-less ceramic cups. She stepped to the counter where a bucket of water she had pulled from the well earlier that morning sat, and dipped the cups inside, filling them. Returning to Serapis, she drunk from one and offered the other to him.

Nick hurried to an open table, eagerly claiming it. Overjoyed to be among the first round of massages, he sat on it and stretched his back out. He chuckled through his nose as he noticed Jorn holding his masseuse up with his own late stretches.
A human girl who looked in her late twenties with her long black hair pulled up in a neat bun approached him. Nick swore she had some pixie blood in her, with her pointed nose, petite appearance, and rather short stature.
“Nick!” she greeted cheerfully as Nick laid down on the table, a slight Irish accent in her voice.
Then, of course, there was her elephant’s memory. If Nick did not know any better, he would say she knew the names of every orphan in the mansion better than even the headmaster and mistress.
“Last time I saw you, you were working on translating text, no?” She started rubbing Nick’s shoulders.
“Don’t remind me,” Nick muttered into the pillow, making the woman smile.

Kia glanced back at Laura’s comment before the dwarf had time to think on it.
“Oh, and I’m the one you think has something against a race?” Kia walked backwards a couple steps to one of the empty tables as her friends went to others nearby.
Other girls had already chosen a couple of the tables, all dressed in the standard high-cut sports-bra-like top, and a pair of short Kia had the suspicion were originally intended for use by the males, and were just tailored to fit the opposite gender. Except, of course for the lizardfolk with only their wrapped loincloths that made Kia thankful for the shorts, even if they were once intended for boys.

The dracon escorted the mute halfling to the massage room, the two trainers careful to keep the halfling and dwarf apart. They brought them to tables on opposite ends of the room.
In the time it took to get to the massage room, what he had done sunk in. The child dragged his feet, dreading the thought of what the dwarf might dish out to get back at him and regain the pride he had lost by losing a fight to a halfling.
Even so, knowing the dwarf got what he deserved provided a bit of comfort.
With the table already a bit lower than the others for the sake of ease for the halfling woman manning it, the child hopped on it without any aid, and laid down with a sigh. He gave only a nod or shake of his head as the masseuse tried to make conversation.
He swore he could feel the angry gaze of his rival from across the room, but that was a worry that could wait for twenty minutes.

Serapis took the cup. "Anyway, if Arjun is going to come up here, he's got to do so in the next few minutes." It didn't matter to Serapis. He left this particular aspect of caring for the children's bodies to the females. Thayva and the other females took the lead in that sphere.

-------------

Jorn and Aurelian were on tables on either side of Nick, to his right and left. All three females were busy working on their muscles, paying attention to even the minutest little details. They did not want to neglect any knots or tightness. Of course, the relatively short time per orphan meant that they couldn't work out every issue in time, so they focused on the knots which were likely to cause the most problems later on. There had been some complaints of sore muscles lately, so there was a push to increase treatment in this part of the orphanage.

Aurelian turned his head over to look at Nick. "Translating? Doesn't sound like it would hurt your shoulders." Aurelian tried to turn on his side, but was pushed back down onto his stomach by the elf woman."

"Aurie! Lie still! This isn't just for your enjoyment. It's a medical treatment as much as anything else." she said, almost word-for-word as if from a pamphlet. She didn't tell him that it was also a way of giving a medical examination, to an extent. Best to disguise the medicine in candy, so to speak. Aurelian was under a good deal of stress for one so young, but he was otherwise perfectly healthy.

"Alright, alright. I'm not a fragile little girl" he protested to the elf. Again, she sighed.

"Your body is still growing, and you have a long way to go before you are as strong as an adult. Now, this may be a bit uncomfortable." She worked in her thumbs, applying a great deal of pressure to a spot just underneath his right shoulder blade. It hurt for just a second, but that sensation was quickly replaced by a sense of relief as she undid a particularly tight knot by rubbing her thumbs around in circles, kneading the muscles.

"It may be a male's world out there, but in this room, we females might as well be queens" she said, rubbing his other shoulder.

--------------------

Laura sighed in contentment as her feet were rubbed. She looked over at Kia. "Well, some races do things better than others, right? Ever heard of a mighty halfling fighter? Or a dwarven archer?"
