Kat was sitting in the gym with Gracie. The baby was trying to walk by herself. She was actually getting good at standing by herself as long as she had something to hold on to.
Kat was worried. Alex was missing. Had been for some time. People said that maybe he just moved on after what happened with Matt, but Kat felt he wouldn't have left the kids behind. He cared about them too much to do that. She had wanted people to go and look for him, but they also had to protect their home from whatever group Malcolm had come from. She had been told his sob story but she didn't believe it for a moment.
And there was the situation with Nikki and Vincent. Things had backed off between them but Kat had dealt with his kind before. As a blackjack dealer in Las Vegas you see and deal with the mob a lot. Kat had learned to deal the cards and keep her mouth shut, but her eyes and ears had been open to see a lot of things. A man like Vincent was not going to just give up. There would be retaliation and it would not be pretty.
And Kat had another thing to worry about. She was feeling crummy lately, weak and sick. The last time she had felt this way had been right before she'd...
She look at Grace and felt her smile come back. She loved her daughter with all of her being, but bring another child into this world just spelled trouble. How could she get pregnant again, now of all times?
And how was she supposed to find out? Any pregnancy tests would be in the med area where Matt watched like a hawk. She didn't want him to know, just in case she wasn't pregnant.
Would Jenna or Nikki get one for her, under the pretense it was for them? No, she couldn't ask Nikki to do that. Matt would blow a gasket if he thought his little sister was pregnant.
Getting up, she picked up Gracie and went towards the kitchen.
Spying Jenna, she walked over and got a jar of peaches for Grace to gnaw on. "Hey Jenna...? Kat started to ask and faltered a bit, blushing in embarrassment. "I have a favor to ask and... god this is awkward... um... look you don't have to do it if you don't want to, but I don't know who else to ask without freaking everyone out, especially Matt. Listen... could you..." Kat closed her eyes and said it fast and low. "Could you go to first aid and get a pregnancy test for me without anyone knowing about it?"
Before they knew it everyone was yelling. Gracie cried and Kat cuddled her close to shush her. In a crisis, when you were scared, it said a lot about you for who you called for first.
"Where's Matt?" Kat asked aloud as she and others were ushered into the cafeteria.

In the Winter Court iron is mined by the gremlins as they are the only ones who can touch it without harm. Arys has a stockpile of iron for trade and in case there is an attack made on her the gremlins of her realm have iron weapons they forged for themselves. They are too loyal to use it against their Queen.
I approve of the Winter Knight. As for what he failed at she might feel like he failed at protecting her from Feoras. Feoras and Arys were seeing each other right after she became queen, but it didn't last long. There was no war, but Summer and Winter have had no trade agreement since that time.
And now that she is feeling conflicted and scared Arys would have a good reason to release her knight from the dungeon to be back at her side.

Kat listened with a frown. James was being pushy, but he also had a point. "While I'm not comfortable with all these guys drooling after my pumpkin, you gotta think clearly Nik. You may not want to hear this but if something barks like a dog and scratches like a dog it probably has fleas like a dog. As much as we like to believe they do, the fact is people don't change. Not really. The choices we make shape who we are. And no matter how hard we try, deep down we are always the same people. If that was who he was before the world went to hell I doubt anything has changed. In this kind of world people do not get better. If anything they get worse."
She paused and reached over to hug Nikki. "The only reason I'm giving Matt a second chance is because before all of this he was a good man and I believe he still is inside. But sweetie, think about it : if Vincent was that kind of man before do you really think this hellish world is going to change him for the better? I don't want you tangled up in something that is going to hurt you. You are the sister I never got to have. Please, be careful."
