”Y’know what, I think they’ve got it, actually,” He told Mithza. Connie seemed to be handling one of them at the very least. Somehow, it appeared Cal got himself under control pretty quickly while surrounded by a bunch of damn shadow dragons, and moving through the Neverish with three or four plastered wizards that didn’t know their ass from a phylactery was going to be a hassle. Then again… ”Hmm… If the brothers want them out that bad, they know how to get favors.” Rohan could crack jokes, too. He sat the now-empty mug off to the side on a coaster, and tapped his staff against the floor.

”If anybody thinks they’re too intoxicated to get back out on their own, now’s the time to let me know,” He announced. ”I’m heading out, so come if you’re coming.” He wasn’t about to just use the staff’s power on them, then turn around and let them get drunk again. It was getting late, and he wasn’t about to fall asleep for a few more months, but they were getting kicked out.

”Best not to keep the old man waiting.” He felt sassy today.

Annika reached for another glass of water when Rohan made his pronouncements. She looked him up and down.

”You're not old,” she declared.

”I meant that old man,” He explained, pointing his stick in Barty’s direction. Root ruffled his wooden feathers on his shoulders. ”He’s immortal.”

Annika followed the pointy stick to look at Barty. She cocked her head and drank her water, nearly spitting it out when Rohan said he was immortal. ”Really?” She moved closer to Rohan to whisper, but in her inebriated state, it was more like she was talking at a normal volume. ”Why is he in school then? He definitely doesn't need it.”

”Ask him yourself. But between you and me, I’m pretty sure it’s just fun for him. All the time in the world, you get bored sooner or later. You coming?”

Annika nodded eagerly. ”Yes, please! Come along Charlie and Lunchbox Jr. We're going on an adventure,” she said, hopping towards the picture frame. She continued to cradle one of the dragons in her arms.

Rohan spun around on his heel and saw himself out, slow enough for Annika and her creatures to follow. He opened the door and headed down the long and winding tunnel that led back out into the school itself.

It was not until they were out and able to speak easily that he struck up a conversation.

”So… What’s with the dragons?” He asked. ”You summon things?”

Thankfully, the three creatures Annika called to had made it through the otherwise of the portrait. The Shadow Terrier, Lunchbox Jr., and Barker bounded down the hallway, whereas the rabbit, Charlie, hopped around their collective feet and sniffed corners.

Annika rubbed the shadow dragon's chin, her power tingling just underneath the surface still. ”Oh, yes. This is one of the little tricks I have. Once I see an animal or creature, I can recreate it completely from shadow. I've used them to help me fight or just keep me company. My family told me our ancestors used to be able to transform into animals. I developed this ability shortly after that. A sort of homage to the family I didn't grow up with,” Annika explained, feeling talkative thanks to the drug.

That was interesting. Could she recreate monsters, or demons, or other things that weren’t inherently natural to Earth? Rohan would have to remember not to let Annika follow him into the woods.

”You didn’t grow up with them? Looks like they taught you a lot.”

Annika shook her head, smiling fondly. ”No, I was adopted. But my dad never stopped helping me try to find my family.” She scratched her dragon friend once more before setting him down to chase after the Terrier.

”What about you?” Annika looked over, wondering if Rohan’s familiar would accept scratches.

”I learned my stuff myself. Started back when I took a long walk, realized I’d gotten across an ocean in just a couple of days. I think I figured it out okay.”

His owl croaked.

Annika squinted her eyes at Rohan. ”You walked across the ocean? What are you, Jesus?” Annika asked and laughed until the owl croaked.

”Hello again, shonkwahsótha.” She held her hand out to the great, wooden owl, hoping to make a new friend.

Root craned his head forward, like a cat. He blinked slowly, also like a cat.

”No, that’d be weird. I cut a raft out of a tree, first. Then I crossed an ocean. Turned out to be magic, since it was so fast.”

”Ah, that makes more sense,” Annika agreed. She turned her hand over and curled a finger and rubbed it gently against the owl's wooden nose and headed like she would have with any other bird or owl.

”So is your magic tied to nature, or more specifically trees,” she asked her coven mate curiously.

”Both, kind of. It’s complicated… I could take moss and make something that heals wounds, or sap from a tree to make what’s basically Greek Fire.” He didn’t have any at the moment, but there was always a use for it. ”A tree just happens to have a lot of uses for magic.”

Annika smilgrinned and bounced a little as she walked. ”Both. That makes sense. Trees hold so much spiritual and ancestral energy. And wood acts as a conduit. Scientifically speaking,” Annika said.

”Yeah, something like that. And there’s… A few thousand species of them, I can pull off different things depending on the one I use. I’ve got a mask made of bog wood that lets you see things normal eyes can’t. A magic ring made of Yew, which is usually planted in churches, and a few other things.”

Root’s head twitched around Annika’s fingers, it seemed like he was… Purring? Like a cat.

Annika’s eyes sparkled and she sighed wistfully. She pet the owl for a moment longer before she pulled her fingers back. ”That would be nice. To be connected to nature like that..” She fiddled with the shirt tied around her waist.

When Annika was first introduced to her family, she had worried her magic was a bastardaztion of what nature truly was. It was a complicated feeling, since she loved the Everdark and the knowledge it shared with her. She knew how special that place was and how much it meant that it had accepted her. But some days she still felt like something was missing.

”There’s a whole planet we’re standing on, you know. Just take a walk, get away from the screens and the cars, it’s not so difficult.” Just don’t bring me along, he elected not to add on.

”It’s easy to get disconnected in places like this, but it’s easy to find it again.”

Annika glanced at Rohan, she smiled a little but shook her head. That wasn’t entirely what she was getting at. ”Is there anything else we can do after classes other than go to Haven? I feel like I wouldn’t be able to sleep even if I tried.” Annika was still vibrating with energy.

”Depends. There’s a library that people can spend time in, so long as they don’t wreck the place. There’s a few workshops some of us use to constructive magic like mine…”

Root jumped from Rohan’s shoulder to Annika’s.

”...You could always go for a walk. It’s a big school, I’m sure someone’s got something planned.”

The mention of workshops had Annika bouncing on the balls of her feet with a little more interest. She could do whatever she wanted if she had a workshop. Or if Rohan let her borrow his. The shadows in the hallway seemed to turn with interest in Annika’s direction, drawn to her sudden excitement.

When Root moved to Annika’s shoulder, the girl’s eyes widened before she giggled and offered the sweet owl more pets. It was easier to run her fingers along his wooden wings and head this way.

”Do you think I could borrow your workshop? Does it have a window?” If there was a sliver of moonlight showing, Annika could work with the light. She was still honing her skill with Mother Moon.

”Technically, it’s not mine,” He grinned, watching those two enjoy each other. ”Belongs to the school, but if you’re careful about bumping into things and not setting of any spells? Sure, go right ahead. Windows are locked, though. I’ve got a spare key somewhere… We’re gonna be using one a lot, I think, when Marino gets her hands on us.”

Annika continued to pet Root while they walked, it simply being a task that faded into the background. ”You could just let me in yourself. I don’t know where I’m going,” she reminded him. She was disappointed to hear the windows were locked, but maybe she could figure out a way to open them anyway. At the mention of their professor and mentor’s name, Annika concentrated on Root a little more.

”Any words of advice when it comes to her?”
The owl croaked again. Clearly, he had a way with words.

”Never met her, no clue.” Rohan twirled his staff around until it rested in the crook of his arm. ”Seemed awfully eager to meet me and get to work, though. So maybe don’t let her catch you standing around doing nothing.”

They turned a corner, and Rohan fished around in his pockets. ”Speaking of work, maybe I will let you in. Might as well, I won’t be sleeping much anyway.”

”Oh, is she new?” Annika asked, while smiling at Root. Once they reached Rohan’s workshop, the shadows seemed to relax and settle back into their natural formation. They were obviously happy with the decision to visit the workshop.

Annika was never one to stand around and do nothing. Her father always made sure she was learning, and her family used silences as moments of teaching as well.

”Are you a light sleeper?” Annika asked, standing outside Rohan’s workshop with her three shadowy companions and Root on her shoulder. She looked like the rejected version of a Disney Princess, standing in her grudge clothes, with an assortment of magical animals.

”Not exactly.” When they pulled up to the door, he finally produced a simple iron key that they gave out to anyone that needed a space like this. The door had his name written on it, and it opened without a sound.

The inside was cold, and pitch black until he stepped in. Lanterns lit up along the walls, and a practical-looking chandelier that looked more like a hanging furnace lit up overhead to fill the room with light. It was pretty simple and straightforward in there. Long tables with papers and other things stacked away, hammers and chisels, the usual things.

”I just don’t sleep unless it’s winter, magic thing.”

Annika waited to step inside until Rohan did. The room lit up, and she did a small turn, her hand brushing along Rohan’s name on the door. She nodded her head appreciatively. Simple yet perfect. Her shadowed animals bounded in, examining everything that they could at eye level. The dragon seemed to find a spot on top of the chandelier and curled up. They looked very content.

Annika walked over to one of the tables and peered down at the papers. She smiled at Rohan’s statement. ”Magic thing. Sounds more like a bear thing,” she teased.

”You could say that, yeah. Basically impossible to fall asleep unless it gets cold enough, and then it’s hard to stay awake.” He sat the key down on one of the tables, cherry wood that was nearly black with age. He sat the Mountain Scepter down beside it. ”If you’re unlocking the windows, make sure they’re locked when you’re done. Don’t want anything sneaking in.”

He walked over to a smaller table, which contained several cubes of wood carved with monstrous faces. It had drawers underneath it, which he pulled a few tools out from.

Annika turned around and leaned against one of the tables, watching Rohan. ”What would sneak in?”

”Ghosts, ghouls, goblins, demons, the wrong kind of dragons…” Or the Wrong Things. ”You never know, when you’re in a place like this. That key goes to the windows, have at it. You have any artifice experience, or did you get picked at random? I’m rounding up some tools for tomorrow while we’re here.”

Annika grinned and grabbed the key. ”Mmm, so the usual then? As long as there are no Green-Eyed ones here, I think we can manage a few rogue demons. And I can create dragons now.” Annika took the key and reached up to unlock the window. She inhaled the fresh air, feeling infinitely more clear-headed. What she wouldn’t give to just run around outside and find a lake to jump into. Annika turned and set the key on a table.

”Metal working. Although, I suppose I need to stay away from metals Finley doesn’t like.” They seemed particularly concerned with Annika’s metal work.

”Yeah, they’re fae.” He picked out a chisel and a wood mallet, then went over to another table to grab two sharpening stones. ”Iron is bad, so is silver, copper, pretty much anything like it if you want to play it safe. It’s like poison for Finley’s people.” Which was, coincidentally, why Rohan made sure to take good care of the steel sword Connie had gifted him once. Just in case not lying wasn’t actually a problem.

”I don’t have a lot for metal, but I do have stuff to keep an edge sharp.” He sat the stuff on the table, looking it over. ”Root, go grab the knife set.”

The owl chirped and fluttered into the air.

Annika wandered over to Rohan’s side after Root flew off. She peered down at his work. ”What are you working on?” she asked, her previous notions of playing with the moonlight gone.

”Thinking about what Marino’s gonna have us do. The whole coven’s meeting to discuss the Mystery, and that means we ought to be prepared to waste zero time. Gonna throw some of the good tools I have together, with a few to spare just in case.”

Root swooped down to a rack and clamped his wooden claws on a leather, rectangular thing. He brought it over, and Rohan caught it mid-air. He opened it and pulled out a knife that resembled a cleaver.

”I do have a few other things I want to work on, though. I’m short on arrows, those will be easy to make. And I ran out of Flamepitch before I came back… Hm. Root, the sandalwood.”

Root flew off again.

The coven’s mystery, the assignment for the year. Annika took a step back, looking around Rohan’s room once more. She gravitated back towards the window, staring up at the sky. She thought back to Sariel’s words earlier. They would meet in a lab tomorrow to start working on how to discover this mystery. How does one find a mystery? If the mystery of her life was any indication, it was done through a lot of research and experimentation, but at least then Annika knew the mystery was herself. This mystery was just that. A mystery.

Annika pushed away from the window and wandered back to Rohan. ”Have you solved many mysteries?” she asked, picking up one of the blades he had.

”Hm, not really.” He was already trying to solve the problem of losing his humanity. Another mystery on top of that was… A challenging prospect. ”There’s all kinds of things people don’t know. It’s only impossible until it’s done. You?”

”Aside from the mystery about me? A few…but my father was always there. He told me we solved one a long time ago, but I have no recollection of it,” Annika said, darting around that topic of conversation. ”Hopefully we will have more of a direction tomorrow. At least a starting point,” Annika said. She stuck the point of the knife on her finger and twirled it.

”That’ll help, yeah. Careful with that, it’s sharp.” Root dropped a long length of wood down onto the table, then swooped around over to Annika again.

”He seems to like you.”

Annika smilked. ”Sharp things never bothered me,” she said, but set the knife down to make Rohan happy. She turned to Root and offered a finger for him to nibble on. ”And I like him. As I got older, my father would leave more often for various things. When I was lonely, I’d talk to my familiar or find other creatures to talk with. They’re just easier to get along with. They like you or they don’t. There isn’t any of that pretending to like you just to save face.”

Root just tilted his head at her.

”He doesn’t talk much, but he’s always decent to be around. He’s a good scout when I’m in the woods. It’s hard getting lost, or caught off guard by anything thanks to him. Who’s yours?” He asked, grabbing a knife, ruler and pencil from around the shop.

”He certainly wouldn’t do that if he didn’t like you,” Annika agreed. ”Nochella. They pop in and out as they want, unless I really need them. She sort of, formed one day and never left.”

Rohan took to drawing out straight lines on the wood block he had, then using the knife to split it into smaller pieces. ”Just out of nowhere? She’s magic too, not just some ordinary animal like some familiars, huh?”

Annika smiled and nodded. ”She is. She moves between home and here through portals and shadows. A bit of complicated magic,” Annika said, picking up one of the smaller blocks. After she examined it, she offered it to Root.

Root stuck his beak around it, and just held.

”That sounds pretty useful, actually. Root flies and he’s hard to spot in the air. Something that can slip through portals, I can see that being hard to find too. I guess you get around easy, yeah?”

He was whittling the pieces of wood into straight shafts, which he’d turn into arrows eventually.

”Even faster than building a magical raft to get across the ocean,” she grinned.

”I bet.” He grinned, gliding a draw knife over an arrow shaft. ”Do you do any archery? I’ve got a magic bow stored away in my dorm. Thinking about making some magical arrows, too.”

Despite being a magical craftsman, there didn’t actually appear to be any cool relics or supernatural whatnots in this workshop. Rohan made a point to keep those with him when he left for the woods.

Annika shook her head, finding the way Rohan worked soothing. ”No… I created one from shadows once, but I gravitated towards a blade,” she informed Rohan before yawning.

”I’ve got one of those too. A sword, but it’s metal and not wood. I should look into making a wooden blade sharp and hard as steel, though. I have a piece of ironwood in here somewhere, it’d be perfect.”

He cut some notches into the arrow shafts. ”Nothing’s keeping you here, by the way. I know some people here still actually sleep.”

”A wooden blade would be interesting. I'm sure you could trial and error it until it's refined enough to work better than even steel or shadow,” Annika commented. She pulled over a blank piece of paper and found a writing tool before she started doodling on the page.

”I'm okay… Besides, I think it might be quieter here than in my dorm. I share with Jake and Frankie,” she told Rohan. And Jake had been spitting bubbles earlier and all over one of the twins. She didn't know how Frankie had fared, but Rohan's workshop seemed like a safer bet.

”Probably not nearly as comfortable. But it’s fine if you want to stay a while, that Jake guy did seem like a lot.” All it really meant was that Rohan wasn’t going to try restocking on Flamepitch tonight. Not while someone else was in here. He didn’t want anyone seeing that.

Annika smiled and nodded, continuing to doodle a wooden sword while falling into a comfortable silence with Rohan.

Root trotted over and plopped down beside Annika, then shut his eyes. Meanwhile, Rohan kept up his work, and in a strangely short amount of time, he had a decent pile of them. Twenty in all. He gathered them up and tied some twine around them for later, and then double checked the edges on all the knives and chisels. The windows were locked, double and triple checked, and stared through before he was sure everything was in order.

Next, he secured an old wooden toolbox, and started laying some tools for tomorrow inside. It was near midnight when everything was set for tomorrow.

”Planning on staying up much later?” He asked Annika.

Annika had slowly drifted. She started with resting her head against Root. He made a good companion and place to roost. The sound of Rohan's voice had her jumping and dropping the pencil in her hand. She flushed with embarrassment.

”Um… no. I should go to bed.” She stood and stretched, yawning wide enough for her jaw to crack. She looked down at the doodle of the wooden sword. It looked simple and straightforward enough, but she tried to embellish it. Adding a small Root at the top of the blade.

”Don’t let me keep you. I’ll probably still be in here by the time you’re awake, if you come looking for me. If I’m not in here, I’ll be on my way to meet everyone.”

Annika smiled and nodded. She left the paper on the table and rubbed her thumb along Root’s head.

”Good night then.”

Leah wouldn't have caught the sight of April getting her ass beat by that squirrely twink speedster bitch. Surprisingly, April just ate every punch without so much as flinching, and that was impressive. She didn't think April would've been able to take many of those, and she looked so fucking badass. Standing there, bruised to hell and not giving a fuck, despite the danger around her. God, April was amazing. She looked-

Okay, maybe she should wait until after the fight was over to start having those thoughts. Fuck.

Operation Discoball... Yeah! Leah raised her fists and ripped the sand from the water pooling around her. It looked like the mud had just turned into a tidal wave, swallowing Kate whole and grinding away at her as if she were a piece of metal. Most people thought of water as the thing that eroded other things, but sand particles were so small that they really didn't need a lot of momentum to strip paint and rust away. But a small sandstorm's worth of it, moving under Leah's power? Yeah, that shit hurt.

Kate looked ready to drop dead.

"Luna! Zap the sand!"

Another poorly-known fact about sand was it held static very well. All those particles moving around in the air, constantly rubbing against each other and flaking off... It was enough that some superheroes could do some fun things with it in certain circumstances. Like, for example, zapping a nepo-baby.

Wasting zero time, Leah whirled around and punched the ground. "On it! Cascade, Get back!"

A crack split down into the dirt, snaking off into the distance between April and the two tanks of the YA. It went past them, and along it rose up a plateau of stone... In the wrong fucking direction. She must've moved too fast, or maybe it was unreasonable to assume April took those hits like a champion after all. Because rather than put a wall between them, she put it underneath her. And then April went fucking flying for a field goal.

For a brief moment, Leah couldn't feel her heart in her chest. She could probably handle a fall like that normally, but in her state? Best not to fucking chance it. Shit, damn- Fucking-

"Fuuuuuck. Odysseus! Grab her if you can!"
The hatch had no handhold, for it was not meant to be opened. It was solid iron, rivets of some other metal driven through it. And yet, the metal was warm to the touch. It was oddly easy to open, given the small warping in the frame it sat in. Wood grown too cold and shrinking, or perhaps too warm and expanding.

It flew open when Annika pulled. The golden light spilled up and out. The warmth of it had a foreign quality to it, this house was always warm. Its master always made sure it was comfortable for his daughter to live in, but it was an ominous sort of warmth. There was always the implication of a mystery, and that distinct trace of tenebrous sorcery to it. This warmth was nothing to hide, nothing dark about it. quite the opposite, in fact.

A book floated up out of the ground. It looked thin, and its covers resembled golden velvet. It looked to be in near perfect condition, even the silver trim along the edges and the spine lacked a touch of tarnish.

On its cover was a wreath of olive branches in a circle. And in the middle, a sword with a basket hilt, pointing downwards.

The gloom of the house seemed to be pushed back by the light.

Rohan finished off his coffee, savoring the rich acidic flavor like the coffee snob he was at heart. He contemplated flagging Alfonso down for another round, but the taste was sharp enough he didn’t want to push it. And, more importantly, the drugs were starting to work on everyone. Over across the bar, he noticed Connie was talking someone through the experience they were having. Something about corpses, though he wasn’t paying too much attention from this distance. He sat the mug down on a coaster, and picked up the candy Barty offered. He trusted Barty knew better than to trick him, and give him a reason to stay out of the Haven.

It tasted nice.

Rohan tried not to pay attention to Cal as he got busy with Finley. Though, that was pretty damn difficult when Root bristled on his shoulder, and the man broke out into his dragon form. He drummed his fingers over the haft of his magic staff, Barty was right about them not lasting long. He would’ve assumed Callaghan might’ve held out longer.

”And there it is,” He commented, around a piece of green candy.

Rohan glanced down at the shadowy animals, and one perceptive enough might swear his eyes darkened. If he had a nickel for every otherworldly beast he encountered... No, that was the other half of him talking. They seemed strange, but what at this school wasn't? They appeared to just be snooping around like house animals did.

"Maybe it's stick time," He said to Annika. "He can probably sort that out on his own... Probably. Wouldn't want him to set me on fire"

Danni took to the air and put the tanks in timeout with a flaming dome. That was useful for one of them, at least. She slipped in the mud April created, as the ground shook and everything rippled. Being the resident rock-manipulator, Leah felt just how powerful that tremor was. It was easy to think of stone as brittle and unmoving, but on the scale of a place as big as the arena, it was like trying to bend metal. Sturdy, but not impossible. It resisted and contorted back, it took millennia to move permanently. She stumbled and felt the mud get in her hair. That was gonna be a bitch to get out.

"That's my trick, you arrogant fuck!" She shouted, digging her hands deep into the mud and making fists. The arena once again thrummed once, twice and thrice. A pulse of seismic activity, localized entirely inside Danni's dome of fire to slow those bastards down. America, she wasn't too concerned about, since she'd just teleport. But Hulkling wasn't so lucky- It broke them up and hopefully isolated them.

She noticed she wasn't the only one staggered like this. Andy, Kate and Patriot were down too, but they'd probably get back up. That invisible bitch had to be locked down somehow. So she swung her fists up in an uppercut motion, and dragged a sizeable chunk of the mud towards her. The sand in the water writhed, she could feel it coming loose. Most of it was still flowing freely, April's work wasn't for nothing. It rolled off of Kate while she was on the floor, but most of it came away from Andy's vicinity, too. And some of it stopped right as it landed over Patriot, and the ground caved in. Their leader was trapped halfway in cold mud, immobilized for the moment.

Having environmental hazards was great, it was most of her use in a fight. But not when it bit them back in the ass.

Sorry, April.
Rohan & Annika

Annika smirked at Rohan’s warning about the drugs. ”Oh, they can’t be any worse than what I went through during my spirit walk,” Annika declared. She pulled out a green candy, Rohan’s favourite colour, and turned to offer it to the gentleman.

Pink bubbles caught her attention briefly, and Annika turned to look at Jake. Her eyebrows crinkled as she looked at the man who couldn’t seem to stop the onslaught of bubbles. Okay. Maybe this would be a little different from going on a spirit walk.

Annika refocused on Rohan and offered him the candy. ”Wanna play the game with us, Rohan?”

”I think I’m gonna pass on the drugs. The last time a bowl of magic candy was passed around, someone got set on fire.” Rohan gave Jake the side-eye. Bubbles coming out of someone’s mouth wasn’t exactly the weirdest thing that could’ve happened.

”I’ll offer it to you though, if you want.”

”Hmm, did they die?” Annika asked, still holding the candy out to Rohan.

He rested the Mountain Scepter against his shoulder, and took the little green candy and held it up to the light, as if he could predict what it would do when consumed. ”Depends on your definition of dying. Lots of people come here, not all of them die the same way as you or me. Knew a guy once, he was basically a ghost that got stuck in his own body in a way that meant he wasn’t just a zombie. Don’t know what happened to whoever got burnt.”

”That sort of existential talk is better reserved for when you are high with someone,” Annika noted. ”So, you should take that and offer me one,” she said, smiling happily.

”Nah, you can have this one. Catch.” Rohan flicked it into the air like a coin. ”I don’t just keep this stick around for getting in. The brothers who run this place love messing with heads.”

Annika managed to catch the candy. She examined it before frowning a little. ”But it’s more fun if everyone participates. And the twins seemed adamant that everyone should,” she said, offering the candy back.

Accepting it back into one hand, Rohan took a long and slow sip from his coffee, contemplating how best to explain how he felt about this. ”I like the twins, I respect them. One of them, though…” He nodded his head in Barty’s direction. ”His specialty in magic is the kind that takes the choice out of your hand. He’s an enchanter, and I don’t mean the kind where you make a magic sword. The other one, he’s not so bad about that. I just don’t like having my head played with, especially around this many new people.”

Annika looked over at Barty after Rohan pointed him out. There wasn’t a lot Annika actually knew about the twins. She wouldn’t say she exactly trusted them, but she didn’t not trust them either. She had grown up knowing to keep a healthy distance from people until she could understand them better, but the point of this night was to have fun.

”That’s understandable, but a lot of us have already taken it,” she said, gesturing around to the others. ”It would be more uncomfortable for the rest of us if you didn’t take it. It would be like we’re being judged. Besides, you might just get really tired and fall asleep. You might not even spit out pink bubbles.”

Rohan just grinned. ”You see a lot, going to a school like this. If being judgemental got us anywhere, we’d all be a lot more cold. Besides, having my own thoughts clear makes it easier to clear someone else’s, if they have a bad reaction. You see this big guy, over there at the counter?” He nudged the mug in Cal’s direction.

”I’m thinking he’s about to set something on fire without thinking about it.”

Annika glanced around to see Callaghan still all over the one girl, and was that… a claw? Annika frowned and leaned back to look at Rohan. ”Promise not to judge then?”

Willow spoke up then, offering Annika a candy. The same colour that Annika was trying to get Rohan to take. She took it from Willow, smiling, and looked back at Rohan. ”No judging,” she reminded him.

”Don’t worry, that’s not who I am.” He took another sip. ”We’re all friends, here.”

Leah didn’t expect them to actually surrender. That was just her attempt at a mind game, but she’d take an easy win. The whole stadium blew up, people cheered and she could’ve sworn she saw someone rip their shirt off to reveal somebody’s face painted over their stomach. All that was left was to do what they came here to do; Beat the brakes off of a bunch of nepobabies. But they needed a real strategy first. It was a lot of noise, she wasn’t able to think about it with all the commotion.

After they were all done with that nonsense for the day, Leah looked for Dorian, finding him when they’d all left.

”Dorian. Can we talk? About the Contest?”

Dorian was sat in his room alone for the moment. Hovering upside down as if he was laying down with his back towards the ceiling midway between his bed in the air. There was a tablet in his hand, the sounds of a fight could be heard slightly before he paused and flipped over to face the right way up, looking at Leah. ”Uh, yeah…what's up?” He asked as he lowered his hover down until he sat firmly on his bed.

”Earlier today, we barely won. Everyone did great, but we can’t risk that kind of thing happening again. And you were doing pretty good leading some of us earlier… We need to plan for tomorrow.”

Dorian was a bit…surprised. He hadn't expected Leah to come to him to strategize. If he were being honest with himself, he figured she proffered to just rush ahead and bulldoze what lay in her way. He blinked, before holding the tablet up so she could see the screen. The pause icon dead center as the recording was mid attack from Hulking rushing towards another combatant. The footage was marked 2036, 2 years prior yet it was the start of the Young Avengers' rise to fame. ”I assume it was most everyone's first time doin’ combat like t'is. It' s not exactly surprisin’ t'at some reacted ‘ow t'ey did. I t'ink Beanie forgot ‘er sword, from just ‘ow much was ‘appenin’ April was spread too t'in and well frankly t'e ‘ex Girls were a well oiled machine till t'e end. By all accounts we could've lost much sooner t'an we ‘ad wit’ t'em.” Dorian placed the tablet beside him on the bed. ”It's why I spent all night studyin’ t'em or what footage I could get of t'em. Same with YA, ‘cept I've been followin’ t'eir movements for much longer. Used to want to be one of t'em…”

”Yeah… We’re three teams that were going to be fighting each other, and suddenly everything happened.” Leah took a couple steps inside. ”Before Arcade, it was me and Vicky doing the strategy for our team, and that was a pain when our team had Zari on it. And now Vicky’s out, so… Yeah.”

”Vicky's not a bad call, she can run analysis all she wants on compiled videos and footage of fights to ‘elp devise a strategy, but she isn't good at reading people or emotions which can matter a lot in a fight. You seem more apt for t'at if I'm ‘onest. Like watchin’ an animal give off signs you know when to back off or press forward. But t'at's not why we are goin' to win tomorrow. We'll strategize and watch as much footage as needed to figure out t'eir tells…but in t'e end we'll win because we ‘ave to. Somet'in ‘as clearly ‘appended to Poisson-Pas, t'e school doesn't seem to be ‘andlin’ it at all and t'e only ot'er person who would is also missin’. We need to win tomorrow. Because whatever we may face down t'e road wont be nearly as nice as t'e YA team will be.”

Well, that definitely wasn’t ominous as fuck.

”I still don’t think he’s dead… Time cop who didn’t see something coming? No. Who else went missing?” She asked.

Dorian pursed his lips. Right. He still hadn't spoken about…everything. What he'd seen, what he'd grown to know. But how to obfuscate it? ”Nimue was ‘is friend and colleague as well as a coach for your team wasn't she? She's missin’ t'e same time Poisson-Pas is? T'at can't be a coincidence.” Especially after he'd seen her within the same visions he'd seen Nemo in back in the Astral Plane.

”My coach was Usagi. We saw how that worked out. The most I ever talked with Nimue was when that Halloween thing happened and I killed a giant wolf monster. Didn’t know her that well. She was from Otherworld, right? You’re right, that’s not a coincidence.”

”She is.” Dorian replied. He held his hand out towards his gaming chair, attempting to beckon it but it didn't budge. He was tired from today's fight and really should be relaxing more. Dorian grabbed a journal that had a bunch of stickers slapped across the front. Various fan made stickers amongst official merchandising ones for his favorite hero teams or hero's in general. There was quite a few Spider-Man ones, including one of him hanging upside down on a singular thread that ran right down the front and center of his journal and stopped about three quarters down. He opened it up and began to thumb through it quickly with one hand as he patted a space on his bed for Leah to join. Stopping at a page that had a sketch of Wiccan with his cloak up, shadows covering half his face. Several notes were written down around the image, all about powers, gestures, positioning. ”So you want to talk strat?”

”Yeah.” She sat down by him, sweeping her hair to the other side so she didn’t turn his arm into pulp. ”...Chaos wizard. Shut him up and he can’t cast, right?”

”Basically. Billy needs to speak in order to cast his spells. He used to same them in triplicate but it seems he's been able to cast faster now than he could 2 years ago. Then again that just comes with practice I suppose. The difficult part is going to be getting to him. Teddy won't make that easy and neither will Tommy.”

”I can think of at least two ways to fix that. Shove sand in his mouth until he’s too busy breathing to speak, or just bury him.”

”Sounds like a good way to get Teddy's attention if you ask me.” Dorian replied as he flipped over a few pages to Teddy's. ”Our priority may need to be disabling t’eir team first beyond Billy. Takin’ away and breakin’ Kate's bow, breakin’ t’e string itself may not matter as she probably carries extra bowstrin’ wit’ ‘er for such occasions. If we can get one of ‘er trick arrows t’at could slow down or impede Tommy's movement, ‘ell even you messing wit’ t'e terrain to make it sand or something to ‘elp slow ‘im down t’at would ‘elp. America is a stronger version of Perce, and if we are lookin' to remove someone first it should be Eli. ‘E's t'eir strategy and tactics man and gettin’ ‘im out is likely to ‘elp destabilize t'em long enough to allow us to break t'eir ranks a bit.”

That made sense. Without a leader, they just had to autopilot. Their team did that against the Hex Girls, and it was a shaky victory at best. ”I might be able to grab two, maybe three of them at once. I can definitely handle scrapping with their heavy hitters, but doing both wouldn’t be easy. A distraction with my powers can open up space for Andy or Percy to get behind them.”

”I t'ink a good openin’ move would be to change t'e terrain. Make it ‘ard for Tommy to move and ‘arder for t'e rest of ‘em to move too. Percy can taxi if need be and im sure you could solidify it beneath you as you run to em. Billy may attempt to combat you on it to change terrain back wit’ ‘is magic but…” Dorian shrugged. ”Bean can use ‘er sword to protect April in t'e back lines as t'ey eit'er attack or protect. If you do take on one of t'e ‘easy ‘itters I'd recommend Teddy. America's portals may make it difficult for your style of fighting.”

”That’s not a bad idea. It’d be more work on Percy, but he can probably manage it… I guarantee there’s some way of using those portals against America. What if someone just tossed a boulder through them? A [i]flaming[/i boulder, maybe?”

”It's possible, but if she closes t'ose portals immediately t'en it's not possible. But if she tries to punch you t'rough one try and grab t'e edges of t'e portal to keep you wit’ us. Don't need you goin' to anot'er universe mid fight.”

”…Yeah. Bad way to lose. We couldn’t just throw her through her own portals? Well, she’d probably come right back.” America was bound to be tricky. Leah made a mental note to keep an eye on her. ”Wait. What if you possess her and banish her teammates?”

”I could try, but it'll be tricky wit’ Billy on deck. T'ere is a chance ‘is magic could kick me out of ‘er body.”

”We could set up a distraction. A sandstorm, maybe April turns it into a mudslide with me… Just cause chaos and grab someone in the middle of it to draw their attention, so no one notices you slip away. If we’re taking their leader out first, most of them will want to protect him, I think. They might not notice you vanish.”

”Actually, t'at could work. Makin’ a storm to distract from my absence could ‘elp in takin’ over someone. Maybe even Teddy. T'ough America is also a good Candidate or Tommy. Tommy would be ‘arder to pin down wit’ magic maybe if I can keep up t'e speed.”

”Whoever you think you can grab to cause the biggest shake-up,” Leah nodded. ”Whoever you don't, Sabine can focus on and turn against them. America and Wiccan both fighting their own people might just scare the shit out of them, especially if we can get their leader first. They’ll wonder which one is you and which one isn’t.”

”Chère, gettin’ Wiccan…t'at'd be ‘uge. Usin’ ‘is magic to make a secondary team of YA out of illusions? Make em all guess who's friend an who's foe.”

Leah gave Dorian the biggest What the fuck? look. ”Fuck, that’s a good one. If we get even slightly lucky, we just barely have to fight them ourselves. I mean, shit, we pushed the support on our team way too hard and I was thinking we needed to fix that. That’d be a perfect way to outlast them.”

”I'm not just a cute face with an adorable personality.” Dorian said, punctuating his statement with a cute pose and finger heart.

She didn’t think he was that cute. Not really.

”Right, sure. Okay… We should go ask the others what they think. Danni’s probably got plenty of things to say and we really need to see how the supports feel about this.” Leah stood up. ”Can’t lean on them too much.”

Dorian snapped his journal shut, pushing away Leah's less than enthusiastic answer about how cute he was and focusing more on what she had suggested. "Finally, a team meeting. Let's go see the rest of Excelsior!"

Bang!

A strike to the jaw, and a few more swipes left Leah further back than the front, on the ground with two of the Young Avengers' teammates focusing her. Leah rolled to one foot in a kneeling position, already on the defensive. It shouldn't have surprised her, but why would they gang up on one? Everyone had a plan until they got hit in the face, but Leah was a strategist. And more importantly, so was Dorian. Leah was tough, literally having rocks for skin (at least, it seemed like stone) and an obscene lack of chill. It was smart to attack her first, but devoting two of their three heaviest hitters to a tank? With this team? Bad call.

Both hands placed flat on the ground, she smiled. A wicked, bronze glint of light shone in her eyes as she glanced up at Hulkling and America.

"You know what the problem is, with being in the spotlight for year?" She asked them.

Leah drummed her hands against the ground. A thick layer of dust kicked up about ankle-high around the Young Avengers, and two long walls of sandy stone rose up high into the air. Wiccan and Kate were standing within those two walls, confining where the archer and the wizard could see. And to prevent them from quickly getting away, two equally tall pillars reached up.

She was confident Dorian could use that, if he really wanted to fuck over Wiccan.

"We have years of data, thanks to that." Leah dragged herself up to her feet, cracking her jaw with an audible snap and raising her fists into a defensive stance. "And you vainglorious nepo-babies just made a huge mistake. So come on, keep fighting me."

Maybe it would mess with them, or maybe they'd stay focused on her. Either way, Leah didn't need to be in the middle of things to influence the battlefield. Two tanks on one, when most of her team didn't have the sturdiness to take those hits? Yeah, she'd take that any day of the week if it meant her team had less heat on them.

They won.

Holy shit. They won.

”Alright. Good. And tell your asshole teammates that the next time they try and fuck with my head before the fight starts, they better make it work,” She told them. "Your magic isn't shit."

With that, she turned and walked away from them, to where the doors split open. Leah felt... Happy? No, not exactly. Her stake in all of this wasn't quite personal enough, she felt confident she could be a hero after this without all the ridiculous crowds and bloodsport. Winning just meant it was easier. But still, her team fucking earned this victory. It didn't surprise her that much, after all. Their first mistake was-

Oh, what the hell...

"WE FUCKING WON!"

Leah was going to put on some stoic bitch-face and act like she didn't care, but it turned out that she did. She stormed over towards Andy and Dorian, throwing arms around both of them without any regard for personal space. "That. THAT is how you kick ass! I KNEW you guys were going to do it! Those brats aren't going to have a chance against us!" Her heart felt like it was scrambling to rip itself free from her chest, she felt goddamn invincible right now! Like a dog that found a stick it could swing around for hours and not get bored of it. They almost lost a fight against a bunch of cheating, no-good wizards who cheated! Cheated!

And they still fucking lost!

Yeah, this wasn't happiness. This was pride.

"Let's go find the others. They worked their asses off, holy shit- Now I know how Danni feels."

Rohan accepted the coffee from Alfonse with just a grateful nod, intrigued by where this coffee had some from. He might not have been a hedonist like a few others gathered here tonight, but he did enjoy a few comforts of his own. Then he elaborated on his story a bit more for the rather big looking woman with the moth accompanying her.

He'd seen stranger before.

"That's right. A small box made just right for something immaterial. Different for each case, usually, but once they're stuck inside, it's tough to get them out. For him-" He tilted his head in Root's direction. "It just had to be temporary. They're like bear traps for ghosts and wraiths and all the other things you can't swing a spear at. When I had the chance, I unbound him and put him in a wooden statue of an owl. That way, he could always move and fly. He's as close to alive now as he'll ever get. He decided to stick with me after."

Root ruffled his wooden wings. He wasn't very talkative... Conjuring up ancestors sounded interesting. Was she some sort of necromancer? A summoner of other things, perhaps? Descendents implied something else altogether, and Rohan figured they weren't going to be talking about that with the way drugs came out. Not that he was surprised. Rohan brought the cup to his mouth and took a long, slow sip. It was rich. Smooth as river stones, warm like a fireplace. A grin spread over his face. "Great as always, Alfonse."

He glanced down the bar and saw a bowl of candies. Callaghan getting busy with the other patrons that quick wasn't a surprise to him. That mandragon would fuck furniture and the walls if they had a pulse. Rohan wasn't much for the sort of indulgences that altered the mind. That little display with Finley and Barty was why.

"Green. Be careful with those, whatever they are. I keep a magic stick around just for things like that." He tapped his fingers against the Mountain Scepter. Far be it from him to begrudge someone their vices when he was drinking the fanciest coffee on God's green earth right now.
