But in a capital-S kinda way.

I invented necromancy and the windmill. I beat the sun in a poker match during the summer of 1273 and God hasn't felt the same since.

As they left the ice rink, Leah lifted her sword up and rested it on her shoulder, taking Sabine's hand. She looked up into the distance and noted, very astutely, that nothing appeared to be on fire. There weren't any meteors falling from the sky, or any interplanar creatures from Turbo Hell descending from a portal to subject Earth to annihilation. So whatever was going on, it was probably manageable.

"They're probably fine. But we'll-" Beep. Her phone got another message, so she quickly let go of Sabine's hand and pulled her phone back out. That was pretty fast, actually. Another good sign things were alright.

"Andy punched that Chase guy and got in trouble for it... Gideon's sword got taken from her. They're gonna be in detention, hope that was worth it. Apparently that's all." There weren't many people that could stand to fight Andy, even Leah didn't have a very good record for the occasional scrap they had. The first time, she got knocked out in one go. "Must be pretty petty, whatever was going on. Probably hurt feelings, not much else. They-"

Then there was screaming. Leah recognized those voices, the voices of the most hyperactive motherfuckers she'd ever met, one of which she had messy feelings for. How could she ever forget that high pitched squeal that threw all pretense of composure to the wind? And that other sound... The sound of someone screaming in French. Leah saw, high above the ground, that a rubber donut was flying through the air. And on it sat Danni and April like they were on a damn roller coaster. Leah's jaw opened up in disbelief. What in the fuck were they doing?!

Then they were gone, flying off into distance and away from a two hundred foot tall hill of snow. They seemed to be flying forward more than falling, which was weird.

Leah's head craned around slowly, and she just stared at Sabine for a moment.

"...Okay, fucking- First stop, that fucking thing. C'mon."

Then she started walking faster, past all the commotion and other students, arriving with Sabine at the huge tubing area. Vicky seemed to be taking part in that, and Leah assumed she did some of her repulsion fuckery to make those two land safe. Okay, good, if Vicky was there, Leah felt way better about the whole thing. And it seemed April had built a ramp, because of course they did.

"Are they out of their damn minds? Where were they gonna land if..."

Leah saw someone at the base of the hill. Noticeably taller than her, skin blue like ice. She looked familiar, but not because they'd met. Leah recognized her because she was from the same planet, Jotunheim. That girl, talking to a floating cube and some short guy, was from her home.

"I- Woah." Leah blinked. "Huh... That girl's a Giant. Like me. That's new." She wasn't expecting to meet someone from her Sort-of-technically-home.

Shit. Should I talk to them?

When the tube slowed and slid towards flat ground, Marlena tilted her head to the side to keep April and their brother in view. The way the tube started spinning made it hard to see, but they were flying up into the air. Marlena couldn't help but cackle at the sight, wondering how the hell they were gonna land. But then again, couldn't Danni fly? She saw him doing that during the Contest, maybe they'd latch onto him and he'd fly down safely? Marlena wasn't thinking too hard about it, though. There were people gathering around the ramp, and she could hear shouting.

An incredibly tall woman with icy skin, a shorter guy, and a cube? They were talking about something, and Marlena wasn't that sure of what anyone was on about, except for the cube who she just somehow knew was talking about blonde women and swords. Odd, that.

Marlena's tube skidded to a convenient position, rotating around and stopping to let her face the tall woman and her ominous cube. She came to a resting position splayed out on it, resting her head on one hand like she was at a beach. She looked pretty hot, for someone who looked pretty cold. Very mall goth, it reminded her of Luna Minor a little.

"This place sure does have a lot of tall women," She commented, sliding right into that conversation. "And blondes with swords... Hi, I'm Marlena, nice fit you got. How's the weather all the way up there?"

Rohan sighed.

The funny thing about being the nature guy was that nature had a way of being fucking terrifying. People often claimed to love nature and the outdoors, until they were kneeling over a bundle of sticks and leaves in pitch black darkness, desperately smacking rocks together while animals howled. Bears, wolves, wildcats and snakes were always cute and interesting, until they were in someone's house where they didn't belong. And birds? They were no different. These magpies were content to ignore him and roost on him, but his instincts told him they'd get up to no good if left alone for long enough. They had to have gotten into the pocket dimension magic school somehow. Maybe they'd leave the same way they came in, or maybe somebody had just summoned them. He was nothing if not paranoid.

Well, dinner was a bit scuffed today.

The talk of the damn severed head kept going. It seemed some people were going to investigate, and Rohan was considering doing that himself just to make himself scarce for any other birds that wanted to pay him a visit. The consideration became something else when both Connie and Finley were going together to figure something out. Yeah, no, he was going with them. Being in the company of a fae without a metal sword was preferable right now, especially with Connie around.

"I'll come too," He decided, nudging his chair towards the table. Root flew down, grasped the chalice with his wings, and fluttered back up to place it on the table. "Maybe I'll grab the mask before we get there, and see if anything's lurking out of view."

"Maybe we should, actually." Leah leaned an arm against the railing and fidgeted with the ends of her hair, staring at her phone in her other hand. "I just texted Andy about it, but I dunno if she'll actually answer me. If there really was a fight going on over there, I'm willing to bet someone got their ass kicked and is hurt pretty bad." Or maybe someone stopped it. Honestly, she could never tell which would be more likely here. For all she knew, one of the teachers would've just decided to let them sort it out. That Chase guy seemed like bad news, going by the way Percy was so spooked to be around him. It wouldn't surprise her if he started it.

Then again, it would be equally unsurprising if Maeve Whitehall was secretly a terrorist, or if Nemo was still alive, or if Scarlet Witch was secretly here to exploit her position as the school's only qualified instructor of wizardry to nefarious ends...

Perhaps Leah wasn't the best judge for that kind of thing.

"If they're still acting foolish when we get over there, I'll put somebody in a box, maybe. Let me get these skates off and we'll go back. If you want, anyway. Or we can do something else and let them be mature about it," Leah suggested, being a bit sassy. She was doing that a lot lately. "Up to you."

The snow, the sky, the air, everything blurred past Marlena as she brought her limbs inwards to go faster down the slop. She loved speeding down streets, ramps and anything else she could skate down. This felt exhilarating, it scratched that itch she had to move, get out and do something. For a brief moment, the feelings of dread bubbling up into her chest were gone once again, as they'd disappeared a few times already, just to come back. She would've loved to use her powers to zoom downwards just a bit faster, but... It was crowded, and she didn't want to land on someone else.

She leaned back, legs tucked together and arms behind her head, enjoying the moment as if she weren't currently careening down a two hundred foot tall hill at the speed of mach fuck. She looked over at another lane, saw April and Danni, and just smiled at them lazily. With no thoughts of where she was going to actually land or come to a stop, this felt like a lazily boat ride down a canal in Venice to her. The tube started to tilt and spin, slowly twisting her in a circle as she descended.

I think I'll like it here after all.

"Yeah, what he said," Rohan nodded, sipping from his chalice. "I'll be packing everything I've got, just in case. Magic bow, magic mask, magic staff, mundane sword and all. I like packing a back of tricks, helps when I don't always know what's coming." There probably wouldn't be any demonic beings in the Neverish. And if there were, it'd take a few days to make a jar of Flamepitch anyway. Any undead or odd barriers, though... That'd be workable. And he could always show someone else how to use one of his artifacts in a pinch. "If you think you've got an easy way to escape, I guess you'd run it by Marino first, just in case. I'm bringing Root, his best skill is being a scout to find where's safe and-"

Rohan was interrupted when the doors blew open. That wasn't so unusual, but it was the wave of brown, dead leaves that followed that made his heart freeze and sat his senses on edge. The school was located in a pocket dimension, there shouldn't be any way for-

Clank. His coffee-filled chalice was knocked to the floor as he was on his feet in a flash. The chair he'd sat in was turned over, and Rohan's left hand found itself on the hilt of his knife. He always kept it on him, even when he was here and not actively doing anything magical. He hadn't drawn it yet, but what he saw tempted him. Magpies. Three, swooping this way and that, only to land on him. Two landed on his shoulders, the third landed on his head. Then, he didn't dare move a muscle. He stood still as oak, eyes flickering everywhere. The door, the others in the room, the birds perching on him.

Magpies were messengers that delivered signs of something yet to come. They were related to crows, both ecologically and in the myth of what a group of the birds meant. He knew what they signaled, Rohan had heard the rhymes before, and for someone like him, it often mattered most to commit such things to memory...

One for sorrow, two for mirth.

Three for a funeral, four for a birth.

Five for silver, six for gold.

Seven for a secret never to be told

Three rested on him. Was it a coincidence that someone's severed head was found? No, Rohan didn't think so. He wasn't convinced they didn't him for something. Not yet, anyway.

There was another piece of story to them. That one could ward away the ill omens with respect. But that was said to only work on a single magpie, one for sorrow, and he wasn't aware of anything that suggested meeting three. So Rohan relaxed his grip on his knife, and did his best to remain calm. If they were really here for him, they would've done more than perch on him. And if it came to that, the whole school would be in an emergency state on account of intruders, anyway. And that, he told himself, was assuming the could even get inside.

"...Yōkoso, kasasagi san-biki, He greeted them. "What brings you here to us?"

It was tempting for Leah to slide over and hold her girl close, but she preferred being left alone when she wasn't doing alright either, so she didn't. Instead, she scooted back out of the way and leaned against the walls of the rink. Today was already fucked up so far, but it wasn't the end of anything. Not yet, at least. They had only gotten here, what, an hour ago at most? They had other stuff to do, probably team-related things, and then there was the kid that Percy seemed to get into a scrap with, and whatever the fuck else was going on there that Leah wasn't sure she wanted to pry into. She took a moment to think.

Excelsior had a spotlight on them, and as much as Leah was comfortable hiding weakness, not everyone was. That was a stress point.

Percy just ran into some nonsense, ran off, and came back looking rattled... He was a recovering alcoholic, and Leah didn't need to understand people to know that was something to watch out for, for his sake.

Sabine was stressed the fuck out over being the one most responsible for the team's image. Half of them were walking image disasters for one reason or another.

Leah expected to be dedicating a lot of time to studying magic, leaving less time to check on the others.

Okay.

She made a decision that she'd make it work one way or another. The most important thing to dealing with each of those problems, as she assessed, was the emotional stability of her friends. If they didn't have a mental breakdown, or find themselves edging towards one, they could push through with help. Which meant it wouldn't do good to let them run off on their own and do who-knows-what and get into situations without support. Which was a fancy and unnecessarily strategic way of saying Leah needed to step up and be a rock for her whole fucking friend group.

So she pulled her phone out and shot Andy a text...

Marlena wasn't expecting two Kingston-Grays to return the energy. She cackled when April stammered through a response. God, they were cute, fun and dorky as hell. They had a very golden retriever kind of vibe, a yappy dog whose very energy made everyone want to smile and spoiler them. It certainly helped that they were fun to look at... Until they just fucking dove down the massive foot hill.

That was bravery. It was a damn tall hill, easily one of the tallest things she ever stood on, and Marlena was used to riding a board with four wheels. An inflatable donut with no discernible method of steering was out of her expertise, but who cared? Maybe she could do a little trick with her telekinesis to carry the momentum upwards and land... Well, she wasn't sure where she'd land. Probably right on top of someone, who would probably be injured. Nah, maybe next time.

She grinned, and took up an adjacent lane. Marlena kicked her tube and them jumped onto it, riding all the way down, down, down, down. She didn't hear the sound of her own euphoric scream as the wind ripped past.

Rohan zeroed in about the chatter surrounding a severed head. As long as it wasn't the head of anyone he knew, he didn't have much to worry about. If it was Connie's severed head, he would've been missing by now. Someone like Finely or the MacLeods, on the other hand, would've meant something strange happened. Clearly not much to fear, so he tilted his head to Annika, who had just appeared. She seemed nice, so he just gestured to a chair. He was perfectly content to socialize, as long as he didn't have to get within arms reach of that many new people right now. The instinctual creature in Rohan told him someone here was liable to poison something, either intentionally or otherwise. An emotional reaction to someone getting touchy-feely, Jake deciding to jump up and cast something wild on a whim, or maybe Finley would cause a bit of mischief. Inexperience and magic went together like flesh and maggots. Tragically.

"Don't let me stop you-"

Oh, there's Franklin.

"Either of you. Hey, Frank. Plenty of room." Rohan picked up a fork. ”I’m willing to let you take a look later, I need to dig some notes up anyway. Tomorrow’s gonna be busy, we’ll probably be in that room or deeper for hours, or longer if Marino’s feeling unhinged.” More than she’d seemed already, that is. Not that Rohan was going to say that part out loud, of course.

”I don’t have any of it right now, but there’s this stuff I can make that I call Flamepitch. It’s like Greek Fire, or holy water… It’s made of blood and tree sap- The normal kind,” He added. ”Burns like napalm, but it’s got to be something Infernal. Demons, and whatnot. Next time I make some, I’ll let you study it. Might help, since there’s a small bit of alchemy to it.”

He stuck his fork into his wellington and took a bite. Then he stopped, it tasted strange. It didn't seem like it came from a cow, it wasn't human... Could've been some sort of bird. Maybe something more mythical. The curiosity showed on his face for a brief moment, before he took another bite. "Hmm..." It wasn't bad, though. He had no notes. The risotto went well with it, in his not-so-professional opinion.

Leah came to a stop along with Sabine, blades throwing up a cloud of snow as she leaned against the rails. Percy was missing? That wasn't good, but he was a teleporter. And he usually had a stick up his ass about something (usually Dorian's), so maybe he just needed space. There were a lot of things happening right now, and he did happen to be pretty shit when it came to people and social things. Just like her. Maybe he just teleported indoors, back home to grab something, or maybe he just left the country for a few minutes. He had gotten pretty good at those huge jumps lately. But still, wouldn't he get in trouble for that? It was a school day.

Leah squinted at Dorian. "Have you tried calling him? Or texting him? Figured you two sort of always knew where the other was all the time, after..." She glanced down at Sabine, then back at him. "You know. Aren't you two basically always in the same place as each other?" Then she pulled out her phone to spam a bunch of messages at the Murdertwink.

"Knowing him, he's probably just busy cooling off somewhere. If Percy wants to be found, he'll find us before we can find him. I left, so I didn't really catch whatever happened in that ice wall thing. Did anybody get hurt?"

Holy hell, this was a lot.

Marlena stared at the girls. Or girl. Or girls... They were all clones of each other, identical in every form. That was kind of cool, she wondered if it was a duplication power or some kind of mutant fusion thing. Or maybe they were holograms? Or something weirder? Either way, They seemed to ignore her pretty quick, so Marlena was content to let Millie and Vicky handle the- Aaaaand there goes Shieldmaiden, exit stage left. So much for that. Alas, Millicent was more comfortable with fame and crowds. Marlena considered herself a people person, but the spotlight wasn't where she belonged.

Marlena took a step back, thinking Millicent had this. Then the hockey team came up again, and Jessie- Or the Jessies?- All turned back to her, offering to assimilate her. Marlena felt an unexplainable twinge of discomfort all of a sudden. She put her hands up in fake surrender, turned around and hit feet. A pretty face or faces could do a lot to Marlena, but she liked having her sense of individuality, thank you very much.

"Nope. Nope. Nope." She stuck her hands in her pockets and started walking. There was that uneasy feeling again. Marlena really was out of her depth here. Who the hell just went around offering to stick someone in a hive mind?

Marlena arrived at a huge mound of snow, which people were sliding down on donut-shaped rafts. She’d never gone tubing before. Honestly, Marlena never knew that was even a thing. Didn’t people use skis for that? Whatever, she needed a distraction. So she got in line and snatched a solid red donut raft thing, and began ascending. And as luck would have it, she was right behind April and their brother.

She smirked.

”Come here often?” She joked, hoisting the tube over her shoulder.

Rohan didn't eat much, not in the way most people did. For him, food was just that, food. Sustenance, fuel in the proverbial furnace, something done for survival. Dinners were a social construct, gatherings that were often more about connecting and touching base than actually tending to one's needs. The irony was that the food was so rarely the point of dinner. If he was hungry, he ate something. Food was just food, but sometimes, people need something to spice up their life and give it purpose. But it was time for dinner, and people that were relevant to him were around, so Rohan came back a few hours later after meeting Connie in here briefly. He didn't pay much mind to the extravagant, fanciful, and frankly tacky decor. He was familiar with the place, well enough to just grab a seat somewhere and sit down.

A light volume of wellington and some risotto appeared on his plate. His goblet was filled with black coffee. Rohan elected to sit somewhere away from the babbling wild magician he heard some catty gossip about. A whole table away, in fact. He looked around for anyone he happened to know. He saw that Cassie girl he was sharing a room with. But not Annika, or Connie, or anyone else in his Coven. Not yet, at least.

He took a long, contemplative sip of his drink.

This whole building was probably getting set on fire, or worse, before the end of the hour.
