Fei Lan kept quiet as Mamoru laid out his plans, nodding at key points but only half-listening. Her mind wandered a bit as she tried to recall the natural watering holes and streams in the area. She had stopped at a few along the way, but hadn't bothered to commune with the spirits to find the other ones in the area. She hadn't spoken with many of the ones in this area. Normally they would fawn over her very presence, but they seemed a bit reclusive around here. I'll need to entice them a little bit...

"Are you two okay with that"

"Oh...Uh, yes, that's fine." She replied thoughtlessly, only catching the general idea behind his plan. "If you could lead us to the largest pond or lake in this area, I could find this bear much easier. It would spare us a lot of needless searching..."
She knew her request was a little unorthodox and, in actuality, she had no need to request such a thing. She could find it herself without too much effort, but she wanted to get know her escorts better. And this seemed like a good enough excuse. She had every intention of just communing with the local spirits to find this bear when they arrived,
I'm alive, just busy. Hopefully, I'll have some spare time tonight.
The stories surrounding Mirkland are always pretty dark and terrifying, as are most goblin stories. While Gune certainly didn't want to tangle with the undead and the dark powers that control them, he was here on a mission: to burn a very bad book, or so he'd been told. The voices is inside his head insisted he burn some evil book of ancient power. Apparently that book and the one in his bag, which he called "Whiny", had a disagreement in the past, so Gune had been tasked with being the mediator. He would have ignored Whiny entirely, but after three sleepless nights of incessant headaches caused by a million gibbering voices, he capitulated. If Gune had learned anything about magical talking books, they all seem to have some sort of agenda and were incredibly rude, even by goblin standards.

"Looks foreboding, but no other notable options. Thoughts?"

"Gune will not be defeated by stupid letters! Gune is genius!" He replied thoughtlessly, still engrossed in his foreign almanac. He turned to Cecelia and realized she was looking at something in the distance. "Oh..." he stowed his almanac and scampered to her side to see what she had been referring to.
"Fore..bod..ing?" He seemed to taste the word as his tongue flipped over twice trying to pronounce the annoying Elven syllables, but only managed a lisp. "Yes! Foreboding... Very scary, yes." His ears twitched with anxiety.

"Urm... Gune is tribe leader, and Cecelia is too important so..." His words trailed off, momentarily lost in thought. It wouldn't do to endanger himself or his emergency-rations-on-legs. A barn wouldn't necessarily be home to some terrible monster would it? Goblin wisdom says bigness and fire can make any foe cower. They should be on guard, just in case. "...So we need very big meatbag." He declared with a toothy grin, and wagged a bony finger at the dragonborn nearby.

@Iatos
"Hey, scaly ogre lady!" He called to Ishalla, and vaulted from the cart to stand at her feet. "We need your bigness! Barn could have monsters inside. You bring bigness." He produced a rag and a stick from his bag. "Gune bring fire. Together we beat monsters and use barn for sleep. Everyone safe!" The logic in his plan was flawless. No one could refute his genius!

"Gune is the bravest one, so you go first." Gune smiled magnificently, confident, as his crooked dagger-like teeth glinted in the fading light.

The story can evolve further rather easily if you think about it a little.

Perhaps the two celestial bodies are trying to get ever closer to one another, and should they succeed in meeting it would spell the end of the world (Majora's Mask style).
So the question would be how do prevent that from happening?
Perhaps magical institutions who live on the planet and other gods are actively working against this union for... um.. eternity? So that the planet's inhabitants can continue to exist and avoid an apocalypse.
What form do these magical institutions take?
What are their motives?
May this is a perfunctory responsibility they've been dealing with for awhile.

We could get a pantheistic love triangle going too. Maybe some other deity wants in on the action?
You want Olympic Gold Medal-grade drama? We can do that!

Edit; Fine, lol
What if that floating landmass was a small moon that was tidally locked and bizarrely close because the deific personification of the earth and moon have a very good relationship? perhaps even lovers?
@Polybius
I've always been fond of creating stuff from the ground up, literally. Design the environment, drop in creatures, determine how environment affects creatures development, culture, and language, determine influences of culture on environment and other species, and forming a regional history over the course of a given time frame.

I have to use this anthropology degree for something. xD
Could be that the races that are left are descendants of these fallen civilizations.

Maybe these older races tried to overcome a magical/cultural singularity event and failed?

Maybe they created some sort of magical plague or blight that destroyed them?
Maybe magic is uncontrollably rampant in some places and absent from others, and causes strange mutations and corruptions of normal creatures?
Wouldn't it be cool, if its a medieval that followed after the collapse of a much more advanced civilization?

So you have all these magical gadgets and technology no one knows how to use, and could be jury-rigged into other things. Could even be a lost age of culture and knowledge.
If information was stored magically into other devices, and books of the era have long since turned to dust, future inhabitants would have no way to discover this knowledge. It'd be like several chapters missing from the history books.
Wanted to give everyone ample opportunity to get their post in, but if you're wanting things to move along. I can post again.

Otherwise I can keep waiting. It doesn't bother me in the least <3
Patience may be a virtue, but Fei Lan didn't have the attention span for it. She struggled to keep her mind from wandering as Mamoru's conversation with the hunter drew on. She stole a few subtle glances at An Xing trying to figure out what the strange blue sword at her side was for. Fei Lan assumed it was for combat, but was curious to know if it did anything special.

Before she could mull over the possibilities, Mamoru returned. But something seemed... off. She hadn't paid close--or really any--attention to his conversation, but something about this bear problem unsettled him.

In any case, she wouldn't worry too much. Bears she could easily deal with on her own by not dealing with them. Given a wide berth and masking her presence did the job quite well. Now she would be seeking them out and confronting them directly. Maybe that's what was behind Mamoru's uncertainty? Was he uneasy about fighting bears as well?

Without any money, there wasn't much more she could prepare. She nodded at Mamoru in confirmation.
"Hopefully, we can resolve this quickly."

The merchant girl cut-in, declaring she was combat-trained, almost as an afterthought. Fei Lan was silent for a moment--half-relieved, half-surprised--and could only think to say. ""Oh, is that so? I'll be in your care then." She bowed slightly, and turned to leave. "We should be on our way, if we plan to find one of these bears before nightfall."
With that, she started towards the west end of town to the meeting place.
