Or we could say that Vortex can't be separated from Serenity by more than a certain distance, in order to be sustained.
Hmmm... a thought. It may be that Vortex can act as a conduit for Serenity, which is how she's able to power things, to a limited extent. It's just drawing from Serenity's magic for power, which can then be used to activate power generators or whatever for high power applications

I'm a generally chill gomboblin that can be kinda particular. I grew up with plenty of electronics and video games, mostly with games like Final Fantasy, Zelda, and StarCraft. Lots of Nintendo. Dark Cloud is pretty sick. That's a lot of variety, and I do like to play a lot of different games. I like to blend magic and technology in my writing, bringing fantasy into space and sci-fi.
Magic in space is something that I find isn't done very much. Airships and spaceships could make for some cool centerpieces. Skies of Arcadia did a fantastic job of this. Perhaps that's not in space, exactly, but it's pretty close. Some of those ships may as well be space ships.

"S-Swing wildly..." Serenity repeated that answer softly to herself. Right, 'cause that was a good way to use a gun. The other girl rose to her feet, after giving her answer of what she was doing. Which wasn't a good answer, in Serenity's opinion. She looks as the hand offered too her and smiles softly, accepting it and shaking. "Serenity. I'm one of the Psyches on board. You should stand more often, if you enjoy it so much. What were you doing on the floor, anyway?"
After giving Valerie a chance to answer, Serenity took a look around. "Aah... Perhaps we should leave the cargo bay? There must be somewhere more pleasant we can have our conversation. C'mon." The young woman leads the way back to the ladder, waiting for Valerie before she'd start climbing. She looked around, after climbing to the top, before turning and waiting for her... new friend? "Erm... Do you know the ship any better than I do? I don't know where we should go."

Okaaay, so they're more similar than I realize. I suppose the big different would be that Vortex is artificial, created by Serenity using Energy and Law at a point of high stress. Serenity can recharge Vortex, as long as she's near, but doesn't understand how she works or really what she is.

Well, I think it might be good to describe your character once in a while? That might not be a bad idea.

Think of her as more as an AI? Vortex is comprised of energy, and requires a crystal matrix or Serenity to exist. To a limited extent, Vortex can power machinery hooked up to a crystal matrix, but auxillary power supplies are required for intense operation, like Serenity's mecha. Moreover, Vortex cannot use magitech to make magitech, including circuitry. That must all be made by Serenity. The magitech components can be manipulated and broken down, but not reconstructed by Vortex without special machinery. Enough material was brough with for reconstruction with limited material fabrication.

She was dressed in cropped and cut red robes, more suitable to warm weather than a full robe. She carried a small harp, propped against her shoulder, and she strummed it idly. She played a gentle, upbeat tune, reflecting her mood. The magess minstrel watches the people she passes, and her surroundings as they change, keeping mostly to herself.
She was passing by outside when someone kicked open the doors to a guildhall. Naturally, it drew her attention. She plucks out a set of strings to imply mystery or strangeness, and her melody came to a pause. She decided to follow this person inside, and investigate what was happening. It caught her attention, after all. It had to make her wonder what kind of music she would find within. To begin... This somewhat saloon or tavern feel earns it Gunpowder Tea.

It's not really Otherness, though. She can't communicate with Spirits or anything, only Vortex, and there's a reason for that.
