Like the old saying goes, "those who fail to understand history are doomed to repeat it". And repeat it did.
Once the last legs of the Japanese government collapsed, powerful local leaders took over of their regions, styling themselves off the Daimyos of the Sengoku Jidai era. Even though the original government held control of the greater Tokyo area, beyond that it was warlord country. Organizations became nepotistic clans who ruled over their lands, brawling each other for dominance of what was left of the land of the rising sun.
Ashikaga was born in one of these clans, the Hayabushi Clan watched over her since birth and she was raised with her parents and old brother. She was a bright and happy little girl, full of energy and zeal to fly. The Nishizawa family laid claim to the bloodlines of the IJN fighter aces of WW2, and they had everything to prove it as many members became distinguished pilots for the clan, Ashikaga and her brother were no exception. The two were raised by their parents and placed in co-operative control of a fighter wing once they were of age.
Although her brother was the better pilot and dogfighter in general, Ashikaga was born with exceptional eyesight, allowing her to see targets in bad weather and aim from further away. Together they flew mission after mission, counting their success until the mission named "Miniro" occurred. In that fight, the pilots of both the Kayashi Clan and the Honanto Clan attacked their group from both sides. Their small air wing was decimated despite their skill, they simply couldn't handle the numbers thrown at them. Ashikaga watched as one by one her teammates fell to the ground in a burning ball of fire, scorching the earth or drowning themselves in the sea until it was only Ashikaga and her brother. But even he fell, his plane peppered with bullets, tearing through him and dying his cockpit red with blood. He didn't even make it to the ground, his plane exploded midair, evaporating him, the ashes gone with the wind.
Unable to live with her failures, she blamed herself for the loose of the air wing, thinking that only if she had paid attention she could have spotted the enemy before they were engaged. Something inside of her broke, the energetic little girl folded into a cold, stoic professional pilot who emotions burned away with her brother's plane. Soon after, the Hayabusa Clan fell and she was forced to flee, somewhere. She did't know where she was headed, hiding her plane and herself on board a transport vessel from the Hou Dynasty of China. She heard rumors on board, tales of a mercenary company who needed skilled pilots for something, it didn't matter what they really wanted, at this point they were the only things left Ashikaga felt was worth it with her home in ruins, her family dead and her brother gone without a trace.
