If you want to play both Fallout 3 and New Vegas, I'd recommend trying out A Tale of Two Wastelands.

If they at least have the decency to say that they're leaving instead of simply ghosting the RP, that's good enough to me.

Bio

I originally got into forum roleplaying on the official Bethesda Game Studios Forums in 2007 or 2008. When the forums were replaced with Bethesda.net, I was one of several close-knit Fallout RPers who came here.

Inquisitor Carver - Salem

"The Children of Atom?", Mary said. "I've heard tell of them. The tenets of thier Faith are certainly novel, to say the least. They don't seem to be very friendly, haven't heard a kind word about them since I got to the Commonwealth. They seem to keep to themselves, though....if you steer clear of the places they like they don't go out of their way to vex you none."

It's true then, the local faithful have been on bad terms with the locals. At the same time, it was a relief, however, to hear that they were at least keeping to themselves, rather than raiding or harassing wastelanders.

In response for his query for directions, the woman pointed down the road south, towards a large brick structure. "they don't come in to town that I've seen, as far as gettin' past them jes' follow the road there. The road forks just outside of town, stay right or you'll walk right into them. Follow the road 'til you get to the old Witchcraft Museum there....it's the big brick building down there. Speaking of that, it's safe enough to walk by, but it's not the safest place for prospectin', even in daylight, if you get my drift. The road branches just beyond that, keep going South and you'll get to the Cannery. East of the road is pretty much the Children's...west of it isn't any better, though....Raiders and Gunners, I hear."

Then east is where I must go, Carver decided. "Thank you for the directions. Have a pleasant day, ma'am," he said, nodding to the woman before heading back town to the boat, where Giraud was busy tying the boat to the pier.

"I've gotten what I need, Giraud," the Inquisitor said, helping the older man off the boat. "This is where we part ways."

"Well, then, have fun parenting the children," Giraud laughed. "If you need me, I'll be here, patching ol' Lisette up. Seems she sprung another leak. Can't find me here, try whatever passes for a bar in this town."

With that, there was no more reason to stay in town. Carver made his way down the path out of town that Mary had pointed out, bag in tow, eventually coming to the large brick building outside of Salem. It looks as good as any place to change, he thought to himself as he sat down, out of sight of the town and opened his bag.

The bag contained several items- his cowl and armor, a Radium Rifle and a few magazines of.45 ammunition, a single Nuka-Grenade, some survival tools, a bottle of irradiated water from Atom's spring, and a few scraps of cooked Mirelurk meat. He could hear the sound of a weapon firing and a commotion, but it no longer concerned him what went on in the town. Ian strapped his armor pieces to the wetsuit, then locked a magazine into his rifle, and finally fitted the cowl over his head. As he looked through the eyepieces of the mask, he steeled himself for whatever may lie ahead. Ian was gone, and in his place was Inquisitor Carver.

The Inquisitor rose to his feet, clutched his weapon, and headed south along the road. Despite Mary's assurances that this stretch of road was safe, he kept his eyes open, scanning his surroundings for possible danger. Fortunately, no threats presented themselves, and Carver successfully made his way to the fork in the road without incident.

To the east, where he was warned the Children of Atom resided, he could see a lighthouse in the distance. Yes, that seems the sort of place that Atom's faithful would reside, he reasoned as he looked at the picturesque structure. Without hesitation he turned east, towards where the Children of Atom resided. Their erroneous course would be corrected, one way or another. He only hoped that it would not require spilling the blood of his brothers and sisters.
It's not my decision, but I'd be all for it. Inquisitor Carver could use the company.

Inquisitor Carver

As he made his way up the hill from the docks, Ian came across a young woman with a Brahmin inside of a ramchackle pen. A settler, from the look of it, probably come here to make a life for herself.

"Calm down, Bessie, Mary's here to make you feel better," the woman reassured the Brahmin as she begun to milk it.

I suppose she's as good a person as anyone to begin asking about the Children of Atom, he concluded.

"Excuse me, ma'am, but I trouble you for a second?" he asked, walking up to the makeshift fencing. "I've only just arrived here from up north and I fear I am lost. Could you please help me out?"

He didn't want to lie- such was unbecoming for one of Atom's faithful, especially one tasked with seeking out the truth- but it would be necessary to mislead somewhat, to omit some detail to avoid turning the town against him. They would eventually be privy to the truth of his affiliation and intentions, but for now, he would have to keep it under wraps, lest a misunderstanding arise that could cost him his life.

"My friend Giraud is looking to do some trading, but we've heard that this place has had some...trouble. Specifically, trouble involving the Children of Atom making the area outside the town less than safe. Might you know anything about them? And more importantly, can you offer us any information on how we might avoid running afoul of them while we're in and around Salem?"

All of that was technically true, and he didn't necessarily need to know where to find the Children of Atom; it would be enough to know how one would avoid them.
Inquisitor Carver - The Lisette

Ian Carver stood at the starboard doorway of a small fishing boat, looking out across the water towards the small settlement that grew ever closer. The sight of the settlement brought him relief- boat travel did not agree with him, and Ian was anxious to be on dry, steady land again.

Over the last few years, he had served Atom loyally as a Zealot, protecting His faithful from the inhabitants and creatures of the holy island. Tensions had risen and fallen, the holy Fog waxed and waned, and with the peace with the unbelievers at Far Harbor brokered by the High Confessor, they had prospered. But recently, disturbing rumors had begun to reach the Nucleus concerning the Children of Atom elsewhere- rumors of His faithful attacking any strangers they come across, attempting to force His light upon all rather than inviting them to bask in it. In response, Tektus has appointed Carver to the station of Inquisitor, and sent him to the Commonwealth to investigate these rumors, and, if there is any truth to them, to correct these free radicals.

"This is the place," spoke Giraud, the Harborman at the ship's wheel. "A little up-and-coming town called Salem. Good trade opportunities to be had, for those willing to work for it. Devil knows if it'll last, the wasteland has a way of killing off promising towns."

Giraud was one of the inhabitants of Far Harbor, an older chap who made his living fishing, hunting, and trapping whatever lurked in the water, and currently intended to investigate trading opportunities in Salem. The man never went far ashore, partially because he preferred being on the water and partially because he had trouble walking ever since a Mirelurk (although Giraud insists that it was a seagoing Fog Crawler) mangled his right leg. He was an alright fellow despite his tendency to exaggerate and embellish his stories, having been willing to take Carver along to Salem on his boat, the Lisette.

"What sort of trade opportunities? Guns? Food? Medicine?" asked Carver as he continued to stare at the settlement.

"Not sure. A little of everything, I reckon." the Harborman answered, now maneuvering the ship in preparation to pull into one of the docks. "Good time to find out, though."

The fishing boat pulled into one of the docks and came to a rest. The Harborman picked up the pole hook he used as a walking cane and exited the cabin to tie the boat down, while Carver walked to the back of the cabin to fetch a large military bag. Given the rumors that the Children of Atom were actively and brazenly attacking folks in the region, it would be unwise to wear his armor on in town, yet if the rumors were true, it would be even more unwise to not wear his armor when making contact with Atom's local believers. He would be unable to hide the markings on his face, however, so he would still need to tread cautiously.

"This is where I get off. Thanks for the ride, Giraud," he said to the boatman as he climbed out of the boat, bag in tow. His first step would be to find out who is in charge, and learn more about the threat posed by the Children of Atom. This behavior- openly attacking all those whom they come across, as the rumors went- was unacceptable, and would need to be ended. Carver dearly hoped that they would comply; to further refuse would be heresy, and as Inquisitor, it was his duty to judge and punish heresy within the ranks. After setting them straight, he would be responsible for protecting his family from those whom they had erroneously wronged, and would almost certainly have to work toward mending relationships with the locals.

One step at a time Ian, he told himself as he begun to feel the weight of his duty, as if his armor had been strapped to his very soul. First I must find out where they are. If my information is correct, the troubles are coming from somewhere in this area, meaning the strayed faithful shouldn't be far.

His first step would be to figure out whom to speak to. Anyone with the knowledge of where the unruly Children of Atom were would be sufficient, although any additional information on them may prove useful...

Pontiff Cromwell

“Well Pontiff, you have piqued my interest. Of course our traders would be glad to have a base of operations set up in Megaton to help serve the area. However, what you said about technology in the north, now that we would be highly interested in.” Sam said, leaning in.

Cromwell nodded. "I do not know the details, but I know the technologies are the creation of a strange inventor, a former friend of my flock who resides on Atom's holy island. While relationships have decayed, they have not gone supercritical, and I would that he remain safe and hidden from his enemies. While we have little use for his technologies and some even consider it blasphemous to Atom, I am willing to trade it to the outside world if it furthers His cause.

“Let me ask you this pontiff, are you a student of history?" Sam asked. "Ever hear of Three Mile Island? If so, I am more than sure we can come to some sort of mutual agreement.”

Cromwell shook his head. "I know little of the names of the lands from before the Great Division, although if this Three Mile Island is the name of a holy site of Atom, I may know of the place."
I'll try to get a post in tomorrow.
Pontiff Cromwell

As they walked the Governor turned towards Cromwell, “I understand that your Church has had some problems with the Cult. Currently our Commonwealth hasn’t had much dealing with them aside from the odd missionary here and there.”

It seemed that way to the Capital Wasteland too, at first, his thought as his face turned grim as he remembered past events.

“Even though we are welcoming of members of all faiths, their presence to our west worries us. They are aggressively expanding, and push their beliefs on others. That is not something we can accept. Our commonwealth is built upon the belief of freedom of religion, and our most pious people will do whatever it is to protect such right.”

The Pontiff nodded in approval. "That is good that you and your Commonwealth have such resolve to resist them. The Cult is subtle and insidious. When they first came to my home, they did not do so openly. They first spread their dark influence, leading men and women astray with their words, seeding betrayal long before it took place. No darkness, however, can hide from Atom's light, and it was by his grace that I was able to discern the shadow hanging over the wasteland. I do not know what their dark designs were, or what they are now, but they cannot be trusted."

I pray that Pennsylvania does not learn of this the same way our neighbors did.

“I am sure we can work out a mutually agreeable deal between our two nations. After all, we have surplus steel, coal and food to offer. I am sure you can find use of our resources.”

We have little use for coal when we have Atom's glow, but food and steel would prove helpful, in maintaining our bulwark against the Cult.

Cromwell smiled as they descended into the vault. "I cannot speak for all those in the Capital Wasteland nor those in the Commonwealth, only for Atom and his faithful, Governor, but we are not without means of our own to trade. Our holy city of Megaton is a beacon of commerce, while Atom's holy island to the north is home to wonders both of technology and of nature that cannot be found anywhere else."
Sorry about the delay, I've been busy moving into a new apartment and starting a job. I'll try to post on Friday or the weekend.
