Gifu System, The Musashi Empire

Prince Shoichi had allowed a wide smile to spread across his face when he had heard of the Dominion declaration of war. He was an intelligent man, regardless of what his exiled cousin believed, and could reasonably predict what was to occur over the next few hours. He immediately sent out the order for all military forces in the region to come to full battle readiness, which took only a few hours to accomplish seeing as they had already been prepared for an invasion to begin with. He knew that his uncle, the Emperor, would accept Faust’s call to arms. And with that Yuki’s “valiant” sacrifice would be for naught. And it certainly got better than that. The Confederation would surely join the war on Uther’s side, thus allowing Shoichi to destroy that country as well. Yuki had come to love the Confederation, which would make its destruction all the better by Shoichi’s accounting.

When the news of the Emperor’s declaration of war finally arrived it took all of Shoichi’s self-restraint to hide his excitement. Opening a communications link to the entire fleet he simply stated “To all military forces in the region: commence Operation Togo. I repeat: commence Operation Togo.”

That one line marked Musashi’s entrance into the war. The bulk of Musashi’s navy was already warming up its FTL drives. Their destination the Core Imperium.

The Imperial Palace, Bushu, Musashi System, The Musashi Empire

Princess Saeko found what was before her to be an awe inspiring sight. When it came to the population of interstellar countries, thousands were an insignificant number. It was so easy to forget how truly massive a crowd numbering in the thousands was. That is, until one finds oneself staring at that very crowd. Before Saeko stood a regiment of Imperial guards, and three regiments of bushi shodans. They all stood at attention. Behind these soldiers literally thousands of Musashi’s citizens had gathered to hear what their remaining princess had to say.

Saeko had not wanted to give a speech originally, but had changed her mind after Minister Xiao Xiang had spoken to her. Clearly Xiang had been expecting a very large crowd, as she had already arranged for drones to record and broadcast her words all over the crowd and the country as a whole.

“This is a speech that will be remembered for centuries” Xiang had said to her. At the time Saeko had not believed her, but now, an hour later, Saeko could see that Xiang was indeed correct. What she said now did matter. Her words would be remembered.

The thought of that frightened her. She found her mouth dry, a cold sweat beginning on her brow. She wanted to call off the whole thing a flee. But it was too late for that. And, she told herself, if she couldn’t give a simple speech then she was unfit to be empress.

“Honor is a fragile, elusive, and subjective thing. Yet nothing is more important.” A hushed silence fell over the crowd as Saeko spoke. “It is honor that separates the civilized from the uncivilized, the just from the unjust, the trustworthy from those who are untrustworthy. When countries and individuals act with honor conflict is avoided, just as those who are dishonorable create conflicts.”

“Unfortunately” Saeko continued after a slight pause, “Grand Marshal Uther Eddion or individuals who reside in his domain, committed the foul and dastardly act of attacking a diplomatic ship from the Dominion, killing Executis Conrad in the process. This act was unprovoked and dishonorable in every way imaginable. The very act of assassinating a high level government official of a country is tantamount to a declaration of war. In response to this terrible act the Dominion has declared war on the Core Imperium. But let there be no doubt that although the Dominion declared war first, it was the Core Imperium that started the war. And as per the terms of our treaty with the Dominion, Musashi shall rush to the Dominion’s defense. Although my uncle, the Emperor, has already done so through official channels earlier today allow me to momentarily address Uther: The Empire of Musashi officially declares war on the Core Imperium.”

“This war shall be unlike any other witnessed by the galaxy. It shall be both Great and Terrible. Countries will tremble; some will fall while others will rise to greater heights. This will be a long war. This will be a costly war. Very likely millions will die. Possibly billions. We will want to tell ourselves that the Enemy is an evil savage who deserves a painful death. In some cases this will be correct, but more often than not those fighting against us will be doing so not because they wish us harm, but because they wish to defend their homelands. There will be heroes and villains on both sides of the conflict. But let no one claim that the warriors of Musashi were anything less than honorable!” Saeko raised her fist into the air. Thousands of fists rose in the crowd as her audience cheered.

“The stresses of war will make us want to do terrible things. We. Shall. Not. Some of our enemies and allies will wage war on noncombatants. But that is not how Musashi wages war! We will face our enemies not with hatred, but respect! They may spit in our faces, they may reveal themselves to be dastardly in nature, yet we shall hold our heads up high in the knowledge that we held ourselves to a higher standard!” The crowd’s cheering was so loud that Saeko had to wait for a minute before she could speak again.

“Honor and glory is not the domain of warriors alone. There is honor in the man who works himself to exhaustion in the factory he works at, laboring away to aid the war effort. There is honor in the wife that raises her children alone while her husband defends his homeland. There is honor in the doctor who saves the lives of not only our citizens, but those from abroad. And there is honor in the man that regards his foes with respect.”

“The Alorian Kingdom and Imperial Systems Commonwealth have already declared war on the Dominion, while at the same time declaring war on the Vargarian Remnants. And thus it is with a heavy heart that I must state the Empire of Musashi is declaring war on the Alorian Kingdom and Imperial Systems Commonwealth as well.”

“To the Confederation I have a message, a plea, to make. This is not a plea made out of weakness or fear, but one made in the hopes that the leadership of the Confederation will listen to reason. There is no honor to be found in supporting the Core Imperium and its dastardly act. I urge you to stay your hand and remain neutral. We have fought you once before and it is my sincere hope that we will not have to do so again. But should you decide to ignore my plea and instead point your sword at Musashi know this: we are ready. We will not hesitate to draw our katanas and meet you on the field of battle. We will fight you with honor and I hope you will do the same if you insist on pointing your swords at us.”

“Honor is a fragile, elusive, and subjective thing. Yet nothing is more important. Let all who look back on this terrible era discern that Musashi was a beacon of civilization. That Musashi conducted itself with honor, when others would not! That Musashi was a land of heroes and heroines! Let all those who look back on this day strive to follow our example! Let them say that we were, in both victory and defeat, honorable people! Nothing is more important than honor and honor is something we do not lack!”

The crowd’s cheer was a thunderous roar as Saeko brought her speech to an end. Thousand began to shout “Musashi banzai! Saeko-sama banzai! Musashi banzai! Saeko-sama banzai!” And with that Musashi had joined the Great War in thunderous applause.
Dominion declared on Core Imperium, which has started the Great War. Musashi is joining in on the Dominion's side. I'm writing the post right now actually.
@Poohead189! I was just wondering if you had dropped out on us. I'm fairly certain you shall be needed soon. War were declared.
Woot!
Confederate Embassy, Bushu, Musashi System, The Musashi Empire

“Its nice to speak to you again Woolsey-sama” Xiang said as she sat down. She placed her mask down on Woolsey’s desk as she made herself comfortable. “I do recall seeing you at the party the other day, but we both seemed preoccupied by other things at the time.”

Woolsey winced at the mention of the party, something he was quite glad the mask covered in the moment it took for him to remove it. After that particular affair he’d had a rather hard time recovering without the usual medicine he’d used back when he was a head of state and nothing was too expensive. Speaking warmly he welcomed Xiang, “Indeed, we each had matters to attend to at the time. That said Foreign Minister it’s a pleasure to meet with you again, what brings you here today?”

“I figured I would drop in and formally introduce myself to the Confederate ambassador.” Xiang said with a warm smile. “Perhaps conduct some official business or simply talk in a less than official capacity.” She shot Woolsey an expression that was somehow both innocent and yet hinted that she meant something slightly different than what she had actually said. “I don’t suppose there is anything specific you need to bring to my attention, is there?”

“Actually Foreign Minister,” Woolsey paused and drummed his fingers on the table, “There is something. I had intended to inform your office later today, but seeing as you’re here well… You’ve doubtless heard already, but the Imperiums have unified under Uther and in light of this my government has taken measures to solidify our preexisting warm relations with him. A formal alliance was struck just the other day by one of our Admirals.”

Xiang opened her mouth slightly, only to close it. Finally she asked “This is not just a mutual defense pact then? But a full offensive alliance?”

Woolsey shifted in his seat, “Offensive? I suppose such a thing may be possible under the agreement but Uther has enough to contend with already, as does my government. No the alliance was agreed upon to check certain and pressing threats, such as the barbarian hordes that the Imperium now shields both our great nations from.”

“Or other threats such as Musashi” Xiang asked with a raised eyebrow. She raised a hand to forestall any counter Woolsey might have said. “I suppose something like this occurring was inevitable. Especially given the presence of certain individuals in our government.” She didn’t specific what ‘our government’ meant. “Do you mind if I say something that is purely off the record Woolsey-sama?”

With a sigh Woolsey tapped a small device on his desk, almost immediately the rooms windows turned a dizzying black and the noise from outside seemed to die off, “Please do Foreign Minister.”

“I sincerely hope” Xiang shook her head, “No pray that there is enough time for me to implement certain… changes in the Imperial Court before things come to a head between the Dominion and Uther’s Imperium.”

“And you have my honest gratitude for having that attitude.” Woolsey curled his drumming fingers into a fist and tapped it against the desk, “I’ve tried my damnedest to ensure our nations would never again know conflict, but you can clearly see I’m not the player I used to be. Following orders has been a new thing for me and… I fear I could have done better on more occasions than I like to think about. To know others realize there’s more to gain in peace is reassuring, to say the least.”

“It is a true pity that you found yourself removed from power and Yuki-hime in chains. I truly do fear that we may all find ourselves embroiled in a war all too soon.” Xiang let out a sigh before giving Woolsey a pointed look. “If we do find each other at war…” She seemed hesitant to continue. “If Uther’s Imperium fell Musashi would be… more than willing to help negotiate peace with the Confederation with the goal being as few Confederate concessions as possible. Should the reverse happen: were the Dominion to fall, would the Confederation be willing to show… mercy as well?”

Taking in the harsh reality of the request Woolsey rubbed his eyes resignedly and glanced down before looking to Xiang, “You have my assurance that I will do everything in my power to ensure that should such an… Eventuality be realized the Confederation would seek to preserve the integrity and honor of Musashi as well as it can. I’m not what I was, but I’ve not lost every contact I know overnight and to be frank many still owe me favours. I just wish we never even had to have this talk.”

“As am I Woolsey-sama.” Xiang inclined her head for a moment. “However it always helps to have a plan for both the most likely outcome and the worst possible outcome. Unfortunately those two things are looking very similar right now. On another note should something….” She seemed even more reluctant to continue then she was before “cause a sudden regime change in Musashi during a war, might your government be willing to negotiate a white peace?”

“Sevaren doesn’t want war,” Woolsey smiled weakly, “If such an offer were to come I seriously doubt it’d be refused, unless something severe happened in my own government. Then again with Cooper…” Shaking his head he continued, “I digress though. If we’re to plan for the worst I have a request for Musashi… Should things fall in your favour totally and my Confederation face the very worst outcome I’d beg you for one thing, please ensure the freedom of the people. I know it may seem an absurd thing to ask, but it took a century to forge the democracy I’ve enjoyed, and that century saw atrocities even Faust would balk at.”

“I’ll be honest with you Woolsey-sama. My influence over the Imperial court is very likely less than your’s over your own government; however, I would do all in my power to reduce, if not eliminate, your people’s possible suffering. And perhaps my station will rise high enough to allow me to do so. If not I will do what I can to convince the Imperial family, though… Shoichi-denka is unlikely to listen to me.” She shivered. “I do hope that Saeko-sama is the one that obtains the throne…”

“Irony…” Woolsey resisted the impulse to retrieve the whisky in his desk, “I’m sure you have an inkling of what happened that day we first met, but I’ll say I’m like to die regretting it. Anyways, you have my thanks for your promises. The future might not be what we wished it, but so long as we’re alive it’s not lost.”

“Indeed. The future looks grim and seems to be rushing at us far faster than I would have liked.” Xiang let out a sigh. “I would have liked to have had more time to secure the throne for Saeko.” She brought a hand up to her face and made a mock did-I-say-that face. “We both know that Shoichi-denka sitting on the throne will benefit neither of our countries. Thankfully Yuki-hime was not the only spare available…” That last part was mumbled, as if more for herself then for Woolsey.

“Mmmmm.” Woolsey raised an eyebrow at her last statement but hummed his agreement despondently and looked at a black window, “Preposterous that we have to hide discussions of peace. Well, regardless of what happens you have my sincere thanks for all this, and I wish you luck in whatever trials are ahead. I have an unfortunate feeling that this may be the last time we speak.”

“Perhaps, perhaps not.” Xiang said. “I for one will be pushing to allow any country we may be at war with to continue to operate its embassy here. That would allow for a more… expedited peace process I believe. But that is besides the point. I am ready to resume speaking ‘officially’ if you are Woolsey-sama.”

Woolsey straightened himself and nodded before tapping the same control from earlier, instantly letting in a burst of sound and light. Resuming as if nothing had happened Woolsey smiled falsely, “So I assure you, Musashi has nothing to fear from this alliance.”

“I’m pleased to hear that” Xiang answered with an innocent expression that increasingly looked less innocent the more someone saw it. “Of course. As the Emperor has said previously: we seek no conflict with the Confederation. Well Woolsey-sama, is there anything else you’d like to discuss while I’m here?”

“I feel that will be all Foreign Minister, It’s my feeling this has been a very productive meeting.” Woolsey gave her a knowing look but kept his lips frozen into the insincere expression of satisfaction he wore.

“That it has.” Xiang said as she rose to her feet. “I shall be taking my leave. If you have need to speak to me, just contact the Imperial palace.” She put on her mask as she said “Have a good day ambassador” and made her exit.

Awesome!
The Imperial Palace, Bushu, Musashi System, The Musashi Empire

As James search around the palace looking for Saeko his heart felt saddened. As he was unsure of how the future looked. Would the Dominion go to war or is he just being recalled to claim earth with faust. As unlikely as it was James had to think positive he had done so much in two centuries yet all could crumble so soon and he'd be left with nothing. Just before he gave up hope however he saw Saeko in the hallway "Princess" he called out to her if it wasn't for his he would have be frightened but he must stay strong as he walked towards the princess.

"Ah Conrad-dono" Saeko said as she turned towards James. She slowly walked towards him, gesturing for her bodyguards to take up position further up and down the hall. She had a tired look about her, but it was not the weary type of tired. It was the type one suffered after staying up till two a.m. to watch TV. "What brings you to the Imperial palace today?" She asked.

"Well Princess I wanted to tell you personally that I've been recalled by Faust. Is there somewhere we could speak quietly?" James asked some what tired from looking for her.

"Hmmm.... Well follow me" Saeko began to lead the way. "You said you were being recalled. What for? Is there something afoot in the Dominion?"

"I can only guess but that is why I'd prefer to speak to you alone behind closed doors." James said he followed her.

"I see. Very well then. Nice weather we've been having" Saeko commented as she led James through the halls of the Imperial palace. "It will only be a matter of time before the skies here are overcast and storms a daily occurance. Ah! Here we are." One of her guards was holding a side door open for them. She led the way into the small room. "Now then, what was it you wanted to talk about?" She asked as the guard closed the door, sealing the two of them in alone.

"If I'm being recalled then that means plans are in motion and war will soon begin especially with Uther's increase in territory. I want to make sure you're going to be safe and Musashi is prepared." He said as he began to take off his mask as they were alone.

Saeko slowly removed her own mask as she asked "Will the Dominion be fighting Uther's Remnants?" Her expression was one of worry and anxiety. Despite this one could clearly see that the gears of her mind were moving as she mulled over the situation and its possible consequences. "Yes. Yes I will be safe here and Musashi has been prepared to fight a war for some time now. I am grateful for your warning Conrad-dono."

"I can only guess. I assume at the very least we'll be fighting Uther I'm sure others will join." James then began to slow down and look at her "Why would I be worried about the future empress of Musashi. Besides we are nearly the same. Both in our pssonic connection but more I can feel it." James said with a smile as he looked into her eyes.

"Naturally. We are both servants of the gods afterall." Saeko said, her mouth forming into a smile. "I am sure they shall grant you success in whatever endevour you undertake back in the Dominion. I shall be praying for your success."

James slowly nodded "Indeed we're both servants of the gods." James then took a moment clearly nervous of what he was about to say "Seako-Denka," James looked away clearly to shy to say.

"What is it Conrad-dono? Ah, do you wish to converse with the gods?"

James raised eyebrow curiously "What do you mean converse with the gods?"

"I mean exactly what I say" Saeko answered. "They speak to and through me. Perhaps they will be willing to speak to you."

"What do the gods say to you princess? Do they give you fortune or merely advise you?" He asked misunderstanding what she meant.

She laughed before answering "Fortunes? Don't be silly. Advise, orders, prophecies. There is so much they can tell, if you but open up your mind." She held a hand out to him. "I will act as a medium for you, if you wish to hear them."

James shook his head "I don't think that'd be a wise decision. We're both strong beings if we were to do something like that I'm afraird of what could happen. Perhaps you could tell me what they think of me?" He asked in a calm manner.

Her hand fell to her side as she closed her eyes and tilted her head slightly upwards. For a minute she simply stood there, but then she opened her mouth. "You... are destinied to be remembered for all time. You shall be the catalyst that brings great change to the galaxy. They..." She suddenly seemed strained, "will not tell me what this change will be, only that its effects will be felt for generations." Sweat was forming on her forehead as her breathing became labored. "I see... I see...."

James eyes widened perhaps she could speak to something greater or perhaps something was playing tricks on her. Yet James wanted to know more and so he pushed "What is it that you see Princess?" James asked

"I see... Who is that. There is someone with..." She gasped for breath. "Emperor. Is that a man or a woman?" Her expression became pained. "I... What is this?"

James began to wonder perhaps this wasn't the future she saw perhaps it was the past that day 200 and some year ago when he ended the Imperium and brought about this "What's going on Princess what do you see. Do you need help?" He said louder waiting for confirmation.

"I don't understand... Why?" She shifted her head, eyes still closed, towards a far portion of the room. "Is this inevitable? Is... this...."

James turned his head to the part of the room Saeko looked at slowly backing up next to Saeko. "What is inevitable?" James said as he looked back at her

For a moment Saeko didn't reply, simply standing there. Suddenly she repulsed, as if struck by some great force, just barely remaining standing. She slowly turned towards James as she opened her eyes, a wide smile spreading across her face. "That..." She said, "is for us to know and you to find out." If a person's eyes were a window to one's soul, then Saeko's eyes were a window to something that didn't belong there. "You had best hurry James Conrad."

James looked to Saeko in the eyes. He then grabbed her shoulders "What's going on? Tell me." he said angrily.

As he touched Saeko a thousand distinct voices could be heard, each one seeming to say something, although it was impossible to make out what was actually being said. Saeko looked at where James touched her and shook her head. "We are not obligated to answer that." The smile on Saeko's face widened further. "You are wondering what we are exactly." She laughed. "Perhaps you shall find out one day. Now if you will take your leave Saeko-chan has found this whole conversation to be overly taxing."

James let go and backed away confused unsure of what to do. "Why fight we could work together if you're as powerful as you say."

Saeko laughed. "Who said anything about power?" It almost sounded like their were other voices whispering in the room now. "We have no need for your arbitrary rankings." Saeko laughed again, ending the laugh in a fit of coughs. "We shall do as is necessary. Nothing more nothing less. You are free to do as you please," Saeko looked at James, "so long as it does not interfere with us."

James smiled "If you truely believe me to be of little use of powerful then you all are mistaken and not what you claim to be. I suggest you leave the Princess alone." James eyes narrowed as he looked at her.

Saeko responded with a laugh lacking mirth. "In all times and places are there those who believe that all revolves around them. We assure you it does not. Your destiny lies not here. It never has nor will it ever. And before you dared to tell us to leave her alone perhaps you should not have pushed dear Saeko-chan so far. It was your thirst for knowledge that let us in afterall. Ah... but we have truly pushed her too far. It would be unfortunate for her to suffer from any... lasting side effects. We will not be speaking again James Conrad."

Saeko closed her eyes, her body convulsing as the whispers of those not present ceased one by one. When the last one had been silenced Saeko's legs gave out from under her and she collapsed to the floor gasping for breath.

James knelt down next to her and held her "Princess are you alright? It seems as though something terrible happened do you remember anything?" He asked truely worrisome.

"I... am fine" Saeko's sweat drenched face possessed a euphoric expression. "But you... need to hurry. Now." She took a deep breath before saying "I don't understand what, but something is being set into motion."

James nodded slowly "Very well then Princess, I will go. But I hope to see you soon in the future." James then stood up and headed off.

Despite recent jarring events in the Imperial court life went on. Xaio Xiang's inauguration as the new minister of foreign affairs was a comparably minor event as far as things in the Imperial palace went. It had been overshadowed by the apparent betrayal of Princess Yuki the day before and, even had that not been the case, many in the Imperial court simply didn't understand just how important the new ministry of foreign affairs was likely to become. Even so some twenty ministers of the Imperial court as well as a handful of military officers were present. Not to mention a number of foreign dignitaries who had been invited as well. Princess Saeko was even present, although she was in a poor mood and kept mostly to herself. Of great interest to the foreigners was the fact that the inauguration was a no mask event, one of the few instances in which all present were expected to not wear a mask.

The inauguration had consisted of a speech from Xiang's uncle and several other ministers of the court, a fine dinner, and live music being played. After nearly two hours of speeches and dinner the guests were at last allowed to mingle and speak to each other and Xaio Xiang

After the wonderful speeches James had removed himself while they ate however and when he returned he sought out the new foreign minister Xiang who oddly enough was alone at her table no doubt tired from all work she had put into creating a new ministry. As James approached she barely noticed till he addressed himself. "Hello, minister Xiang-dono." He smiled as she turned to him.

"Conrad-dono" Xiang said as she looked up at him. "I hope you have found the festivities to your liking."

James nodded "Indeed it has been. However it is a shame that Yuki-denka or would it be something else after what happened. Though I wish I could have told her uther wouldn't play nice it took me a lot to get the Dominion earth." James said with a frown as he looked at her.

"I would advise you to never use the denka honorific when for Yuki-san again" Xiang said. "The Emperor has officially disowned her. And unfortunately things are moving a tad quicker than I would like." She frowned. "I'll need to prepare for certain eventualities."

"Anything I can do to help? Perhaps talk to some ministers or Faust? Also I've heard some rumors are these to be desired about Saeko-denka?" James asked as he moved towards an open chair near Xiang.

"Hmm.... Well we can talk about specifics at a later date. And Rumors? What rumors?" She asked with a perfectly innocent expression. "I don't know of any rumors. Of course if these rumors you speak of cast Saeko-denka in a favorable light... I suppose they are a good thing. No?"

As he took a seat he gave a Chuckle "One could suppose so. Now one other matter, as you are now a minister Xiang-dono will I be dealing with a new liason or will I be able to count on you so as to further our endeavors?" James asked with a clear expression on his face

"Well Conrad-dono" Xiang said. "Seeing as how my ministry has just been formed I have a very limited number of subordinates. As it is they are too busy and inexperienced to meet with foreign dignitaries, so I'll continue to be in your care as your liasion. For now. In the foreseeable future I'll be delegating those responsibilities to my subordinates."

"I should hope these subordinates are not as interesting as yourself. I wouldn't wish to make new deals with a new faces." James said as he began to get up. "We should speak soon as many plans have been altered." James stood there waiting for a reply.

"Our trade negotiations are still valid" Xiang narrowed her eyes slightly, "so long as you don't decide to go behind my back. And yes, we shall be speaking soon about our plans for the future."

James chuckled once more "Of course, now Xiang-dono enjoy yourself it's your party after all get to know some. While I must go speak to Saeko-denka." James then began to walk towards the seated and saddened Saeko-denka.

Saeko seemingly radiated an aura that kept others away, as none of the Musashi ministers or military officers dared come close to her. She sat alone, sipping a cup of sake, as she looked at her countrymen celebrate. As James approached she looked at him out of the corner of her eye but otherwise did not respond to his presence.

As James approached the princess he gave a small bow "Saeko-denka, why are you upset this is a lovely affair one in which you could get to know the foreign diplomats more closely, yet you sit here alone and sad." He said in a soft voice.

"I don't know about in the Dominion," Saeko said with a frigid tone, "but here it is common practice to mourn the loss of a family member." She raised her cup as if to toast something before taking a long sip. She placed the now empty cup on the table before saying. "Get me another one." It was not phrased as a suggestion.

"While it is indeed customary to grieve for the loss of one close to them, I sadly have no one close save for Faust." James took a moment to look around and seeing no servant he replied "Of course, Saeko-denka but might I know what you were drinking?" James asked curiously.

Just a few hours earlier, in the Cheonsang diplomat's quarters, Yang Ji Han was busy filling out paperwork, Yeo Ae Ri helping him, when he invitation to the inauguration party of a new foreign minister for Musashi. "Na Mi-ssi, I would like it if you went on your own to represent Cheonsang at that party. Enjoy yourself, but make sure you don't embarrass our country." Yang smiled.

When Sang Na Mi arrived at the party, she felt uncomfortable from the stares she was getting from all around her. She knew nobody here and wondered why even Yang suggested her to "enjoy" the party. So far, she wasn't, that's for sure. Nobody wanted anything to do with her and she really felt out of place.

From the buffet she grabbed a glass of some alcoholic liquid and shoved all of its contents into her mouth. This was when she spotted the figure of Princess... Saeko, was it?
She seemed to be not very engaged in the discussion with the man she was talking to right now.

With the glass of sake in her left claw and her wings folded as close to her body as possible and with a lot of control in her tail not to sideswipe one of the guests she had to move past, Na Mi moved over to the princess. Seeing the empty glass in the princess' hand, Na Mi, when she was close enough, held out her arm and offered the princess the glass.

"Jeoha, I'm very sorry about your... sister? Cousin? My heartfelt sympathy."

"Sake Conrad-dono" Saeko was saying, waving him off, as Sang approached. She turned to the other woman as she spoke. "You have my thanks. Although she was a cousin I always saw her as an older sister." She sniffled as she took the offered glass muttering a quiet "Thank you" before taking a long sip.

"From what I have heard so far", Sang exclaimed, "It seems to me that even your royal family could use a lot of diplomatic training still. And, if I may say so, you might start working together, no? You are one family, ruling one nation. It seems logical to me that you should all pull together for the fate of your country." Her right claw had found its way onto her head and into her hair where she thoughtfully scratched the skin underneath.

As James took the glass and began to walk towards the buffet table he hid his annoyance well. Why would this princess who's beliefs are to make everyone she can more like the Musashi people be speaking to a foreign dragon. He thought about this as he reached the table and got a glass of Sake, before turning around and returning to the princess.

"Unfortunately" Saeko said before draining the contents of her glass, "we have drastically different views of what the future of our country should be. Ah thank you Conrad-dono." Saeko took the offered glass. "At times these views are compatible with each other," She said before taking a sip. "But more often then not they are incompatible. I had hoped to bring my brother and cousin together, but perhaps I was just dreaming."

She looked at James as she said "What would you do if Faust-sama's intentions for the Dominion were radically different from your own? Would you simply do as you were told or would you push your own agenda?"

"D...Dominion?!" At this reveal, Sang Na Mi was not only surprised but also visibly scared. Slowly she retreated closer towards the princess. Desperately, she tried to hide it, but it was of no avail. Her feeble attempt at concealing her fright was quite unsuccessful as her wings were trying to unfold themselves to make herself look bigger. "You are with the Dominion?"

As James handed the drink to Saeko, he looked back towards the dragon lady he began to nod slowly "Yes I am, but you have nothing to worry from myself. I'm here as a diplomat and wish to show the best the Dominion has to offer." He looked toward Saeko as he continued "At least that is hopefully how I've been. Though as for your question Saeko-Denka, my relationship with Faust is an old one. He trusts and values my ideals usually if I have a differing opinion I'd confront him about it though never in front of others where he would appear weak. Usually he'll follow them though on certain issues we're further apart then I'd like." He said with a side smile.

"And that was the type of working relationship I had hoped to eventually build with my cousin" Saeko's gaze shifted towards the floor. "But now...." She slowly shook her head, her eyes closed for a moment. "And fear not Sang-dono," She discretely reached out and took hold of the tatara's hand, "Even if Conrad-dono was the foulest type of oni you would not fear him so long as you were at my side. Not that he is anything to fear, of course." She flashed James a quick smile before taking another sip from her glass. "Conrad-dono is a man of restraint and rationality, am I right?"

James returned the smile "Of course Saeko-Denka" he then looked up toward the dragon lady "I must apologize for not recognizing who you are. Allow me to introduce myself, I am Executis James Conrad of the Dominion. Who might you be?" He said in a soft calming voice

Calmed down for the moment Na Mi's wings folded back up again. Of course she still didn't trust him, but she loosened up a little. "Greetings. I am sorry for being impolite. My name is Sang Na Mi, rookie diplomat of the Cheonsang Kingdom's delegation. Also... I am quite aware of your country's position on... beings like me and I would apologize for my appearance, if I weren't as fond of it as I am." A little smirk managed to find its way onto her face.

"While my country may not be fond of aliens such as yourself. Those opinions no way reflect my own personal views." He gave a small smile "In fact I think you look rather pleasant especially your wings I'm sure they'd look more beautiful while you're flying." James said as he gave a small wink to her.

A small shudder crawled over her skin making her scales tingle. "My mother always told me: 'Na Mi, never trust anybody from the Dominion, even if they complement your looks.'" She paused for a minute before laughing. "She didn't actually say that, but she might as well have. And yes, I look absolutely stunning while flying, thank you very much."

"I am sure it is quite a sight to behold" Saeko gave Sang's hand a light squeeze before releasing it. "And while I don't necessarily agree that everyone from the Dominion are untrustworthy I do agree that one must wearily watch those who give out compliments based solely on appearance."

James gave a small chuckle "Sadly that's all I have to judge Na Mi by. I've yet to meet with her in person." He then looked down to saeko, "As for you Princess, You also look lovely and have the diplomatic skills to match. As I've heard it after your encounter with the emperor and whatever happened. You still protected Ambassador Woolsey from a would be assassin. That is something I doubt many would do after having a bad encounter as I've heard you had." James smiled before taking a seat near Saeko-Denka.

A look of surprise flickered across Saeko's face before it was hidden behind a mask of neutrality. "Why thank you Conrad-dono" Was all she said before shifting her attention to her glass, taking a long sip of sake.

James Smiled "Of course, I give credit where credit is due." James then looked up to Na Mi "And you my lady I hope to speak with you and your fellow diplomats soon so that credit maybe given to all those who are deserving." James once again looked to Saeko-Denka

Na Mi failtly smiled. "I am sure, Yang-seosaengnim will be... delighted to meet you. He's been looking forward to a challenge and the dealings with Musashi were quite easy." In a quick moment of shock, she flicked her head towards Saeko and bowed her head. "No offence to you, princess. It wasn't meant derogatory. It was more of a compliment."

"None taken." Saeko said. "Naturally those who love the same things get along easily. They make the best friends and allies" She raised her glass in mock salute before taking a long sip. Having drained it of its contents she placed the glass down on the table before her.

"Would you like some more Saeko-Denka?" James asked as he began to reach for the glass.

"Naturally." Na Mi smiled as she raised her glass as well. "So, princess? Has my presence cheered you up sufficiently? It seemed like you were not enjoying yourself with this James here." She threw an evil-ish look at him.

Saeko handed James her glass, he began to walk away to grab another drink then as she regarded Sang with a deep frown. "How can I enjoy myself when apparently I, and I alone, am distraught over my cousin’s fate? Well... besides the Confederate ambassador" She lazily gestured in the general direction that Woolsey, who was apparently quite drunk by this point, could be found. "Ah, but court life must go on." She let out a laugh devoid of mirth.

Sang's wings fold open and droop down towards the ground. "I am so sorry, princess... If she was anything like you, I would have liked her. Alas, I didn't have the chance to meet her, sadly." A little bit hesitant, Na Ni dared to close the distance to Princess Saeko and lay a clawed hand onto her shoulder. "I hope", she whispered, "that your cousin escapes so that, one day, when you're sitting on that throne, you can invite her back home..."

Saeko rested a hand over Sang's as she closed her eyes. "As do I." She whispered in response. "I suspect she would have liked you had you two met." She raised her voice as she said "Perhaps I have had a tad too much to drink." She slowly rose to her feet, only to teeter. At last she found stability as she leaned on Sang for support offering a quiet "My apologies Sang-dono."

As the Princess leaned on her, Na Mi had to laugh a little, but softly. This wasn't the first time for her that someone needed her to lean on, but not this literal. "If you wish, jeoha, I can escort you to your quarters. No need to exort yourself too much.", she offered with a confident, but gentle smile.

As James returned with a glass in each hand he smiled before seeing saeko-denka attempting to stand. "Princess, are you alright? Would you like some help to your room?" He said with a smile before setting down the glasses

"Don't worry, James Conrad-nim, I got her. She will be alright.", Sang exclaimed slightly smirking at the man. James eyes narrowed on the girl but he said nothing waiting for the princess’s response.

Saeko looked at James, then Sang, then back to James before commenting "The scandalous rumors that would be spread were you to be seen taking me to my room would be of epic proportions. I think I'll allow... Sang-dono the honor. I do appreciate the gesture though Conrad-dono." She seemed oblivious to the almost palpable tension between Sang and James.

"I doubt the rumors would spread as much as you think." James said with a smile before turning to Na Mi "Though it seems the princess has given you the honor. Please do take good care of her on the way back. It would be very odd should something happen. Princess perhaps tomorrow we may speak as with yuki-san's unfortunate occurrence plans have changed." James said with a smile. As the two departed.

Na Mi nodded towards James and slowly, under the suspicious eyes of those watching, guided the Princess out of the room and, almost wordlessly helped Princess Saeko to her room. "Have a good rest, jeoha. I will see you soon. And don't forget, Confucius said, 'We should feel sorrow, but not sink under its oppression.'" Sang smiled happily.

Saeko took a few steps into her room before turning back to Sang. She gingerly reached out towards Sang as she asked "Perhaps you could keep me afloat for the night?"

Very surprised and a little overwhelmed Sang'd heart started pounding like mad. "What... what are you suggesting I do?"

"What do you think I'm suggesting?" Saeko said with a raised eyebrow and smile.

"I don't know... tell me what to do..." Na Mi still looked unsure, but she knew, that whatever the princess wanted, it would be okay to do so. "I can grant you company during the night, if you so wish..."

"Come here" She said, her arms poised to embrace Sang if she would take but a few steps towards her. Her smile seemed just a tad wider then it had been moments ago.

Reassured by Saeko's smile, Na Mi moved right into Saeko’s embrace. "Are you sure about this, Princess? Isn't this just the alcohol talking?" She wanted to make sure that everything was in order and what she was about to do was not against the Princess' wishes.

"It is" Saeko said, not specifying which question she was answering as she wrapped her arms around Sang. "Sometimes" She whispered into Sang's ear, "It is better to speak less."

Earth Orbit, Sol System

“We appear to be having difficulty establishing a secure comm line with the homeland” The captain of Yuki’s flagship said, having come to visit her in her personal quarters to personally give the report. “It may take a little longer before we will be able to receive anything from Bushu.” He gave Yuki a sad smile.

“Thank you captain.” Yuki returned the smile. “Do you know how much time I have left?”

The captain slowly shook his head. “It’s hard to say. I’ve been doing all I can to buy you as much time as I can… but it’s only a matter of time before the Takao’s captain figures out what’s going on. At best you have a day, maybe two. More likely I can buy you another three hours.” He let out a sigh before commenting “At least the Dominion forces here haven’t let the cat out of the bag. Think they haven’t heard the news?”

Yuki let out her own sigh before saying “They may just be watching to see what happens. In the end it doesn’t matter.”

“Are you sure you don’t wish to flee?” There was a hint of hope in the captain’s voice. That hope was crushed when Yuki’s response was a shake of her head. “It was an honor serving under you.” The captain said as he rendered a salute.

“The honor was mine captain.” Yuki returned the salute. “And thank you for everything. It is because of you that I will get to see the same sky that my ancestors once lived under.” As the captain left Yuki walked to the small holo-room connected to her room.

After recording and sending a message to her faithful retainer Kau Rong, Saeko, and a few choice members of the Imperial court she began recording a message to the First Chancellor of the Confederation. “Sevaren-sama” Yuki began, “I had wished to visit your fair country again once things had settled down, but I’m afraid that such a trip will never occur. I am sure that word of my fall from power has reached you by now. My… demise is now inevitable.” She let out a long sigh, her eyes becoming moist, as she added “Perhaps it was my destiny to find an end such as this. I… would like to think that I sacrificed myself in order to secure peace, but….” She let the thought trail off. “Perhaps I am allowing my own naivety to blind me to the futility of it all. I can sense the mood here…. In this fleet I am currently traveling with. The men and women of this fleet are good people. Loyal people. And I can tell that many of them are loyal to me personally. If I asked them they would defend me with their lives, even if it means fighting against my father. I am their princess after all.” She gave a self-deprecating smile. “If I asked them they would likely follow me back to Musashi and help me take the throne by force of arms. But I will not.” She closed her eyes as she shook her head. “The thought of asking these brave men and women to turn traitor scares me. And even if I succeeded in such an endeavor and took the throne it would mean the end of rule by law in the Empire.”

She smiled again, this one tinged by both amusement and sorrow. “Perhaps that sounds odd to you, hearing that about Musashi. But it is true. Though he might think he wields absolute power my father does not. At least not while the planetary governments are still able to resist him.” She paused for a moment before continuing. “You might think me a coward for not rising up against my father. For just accepting my own demise. Perhaps I am. But I will not tear apart my homeland. No, I will find my end here, under the same sky that my ancestors once looked up at thousands of years ago. I ask that you honor my memory and burn incense for me once I am gone. I will be waiting for you on the other side Sevaren-sama.” She paused before adding with a smile “And please give Woolsey-sama my regards.”

***** ***** *****

The carrier, battleship, five cruisers, seven destroyers, and four corvettes that made up Yuki’s fleet quickly established a geostationary orbit around Earth. The leading elements of an invasion force was dispatched to the island of Taiwan, which quickly fell to Musashi troops. Musashi aircraft began a mission to establish air superiority throughout the entire East Asia region even as the cruisers and battleship made preparations for limited orbital strikes.

None of this mattered to Yuki. Shortly after sending her recorded messages out she hoped into her personal Toryu fighter and headed down for Earth. It was there that she spent the next hour, disregarding all warnings of possible enemy aircraft or the threat of anti-aircraft fire. In the end none of it mattered anyways. Whether it was from an Earth based anti-aircraft gun or her father’s katana, one way or another Yuki would be gone.

She was flying over the Yellow Sea, enjoying the sight of the beautiful Pacific Ocean, when a message tore her attention away from her surroundings. “Yuki-hime” The familiar voice of her flagship’s captain said, “It would seem that your time is up. Word of your father’s orders has already spread throughout the fleet. A squadron of fighters will be upon you momentarily.”

“Thank you captain” Was all Yuki said before she broke communications contact with the carrier.

Within moments she was being hailed by a nearby squadron of Toryu fighters. “Gale dancer, Gale dancer, this is Dragon flight. You are to immediately change course for high orbit and prepare to return to carrier. Confirm receipt of orders and comply.”

“This is Gale dancer.” Yuki answered. “Negative. I will not return.”

“Gale dancer this is Dragon flight leader, if you do not change course immediately we will open fire. Confirm receipt of orders and comply. Immediately.”

“Gale dancer, negative.” Yuki responded again.

“This is not an idle threat Gale dancer. Change course immediately.” Yuki’s fighter released the tell tail sound of another craft locking onto her. A quick glance down at her computer confirmed that she had four distinct locks on her.

“Gale dancer to Dragon flight leader” Yuki said. “Confirm threat is not idle. I will not comply with your orders.” She could feel her heart pounding in her chest, adrenaline coursing through her veins. Her body was ready to fight or take flight, even if her mind wasn’t.

“Damn it Yuki-hime, don’t make me do this.”

“Sorry Dragon flight” Yuki ground her teeth at the absurdity of it all. Only now that her death was seconds away did she allow herself to feel rage at how unfair the situation was. How dare her father call her a traitor. How dare she be cast aside for following what she felt was the right thing to do. She didn’t want this! She didn’t want to die!

As Dragon flight released missile to down her craft she felt her body move seemingly on its own. She brought her Toryu fighter into a dive as she fired off a set of countermeasures. The countermeasures distracted the missiles long enough for her to dive to relative safety, however Dragon flight remained close on her tail and where now opening up with their particle beam weapons. She brought her fighter out of its dive, juking and jinking to stay alive as she tried to figure out what to do. “Surrender Yuki-hime, it’s not too late.”

Her eyes flew to look at her radar momentarily, noticing a group of six Zero fighters descending from orbit straight towards her. It was odd, given that the fighters of Dragon flight where more than enough to take her out, but then perhaps they were just being cautious. Either way she would at least make them work to take her out. She tipped her fighter’s nose up, allow wind resistance to slow her enough that the other fighters flew past her, she then leveled her fighter out and hit the throttle, putting her on the tail of one of her pursuers. She fired with her particle beam, but missed. And then she was busy dodging as the rest of Dragon flight was on her six again.

She could feel them boxing her in slowly. Within a matter of seconds, she would have nowhere to go. Her life was to be measured in mere moments. She braced herself for the cold embrace of death. But right as she was about to be shot down a miracle happened. The fighters of Dragon flight broke off, frantically dodging as the six Zero’s Yuki had noticed descending from orbit earlier reached the area and began firing their particle beams.

“Yuki-hime” The leader of the Zero’s radioed her, “Please change your heading for a high orbit around Earth. We’ll cover you.”

“What the hell is going on?” Yuki demanded as she raised her fighter’s nose towards the sky.

“It’s complete chaos up there. It’s impossible to tell which ship is trying to follow orders from the homeland and which is trying to protect you. We need to get you out of here now. There’s enough comm traffic flying between our ships that the Dominion navy is going to figure out what’s going on. Things are going to get messy if they decide to intervene. Once you get to orbit we’ll get you out of here. I promise.”

“I… thank you.” Was all Yuki could manage. She would not give up. Not while she still drew breath.

The Imperial Palace, Bushu, Musashi System, The Musashi Empire

“Do you know why I summoned you?” The Emperor of Musashi asked. He stared down from atop his throne at the multitude of ministers and military officers that had been suddenly summoned without warning. Princess Saeko stood next to the holographic image of her brother, Shoichi, who’s face held an expression of intrigue. Most of those present had sported expressions curiosity, only for those expressions to melt away into anxiety the moment the Emperor spoke. When no one dared answer his earlier question the Emperor continued “I just received word from my daughter regarding her negotiations with the Imperial Remnant. Instead of ensuring this so called Uther stayed out of the coming conflict she herself not only promised that Musashi would not invade the Second Imperium, but that it would also send its armed forces to fight the Second Imperium’s enemies for it.”

“Yuki-nee… No…” Saeko quietly whispered. Beside her a wide grin spread across the holographic image of Shoichi’s face.

“This is not just a failure” Shoichi’s holographic image shouted. “No it is something much more foul then that! Heika this is a clear act of betrayal!” A number of officers and ministers murmured their agreement, although just as many did their best to keep their faces perfectly neutral as they remained silent.

“That it is” The Emperor’s voice instantly silenced those that were gathered. “She believes that her will is that of Musashi. It… Is… Not… The only will in Musashi that matters is my will. Someone who believes otherwise is not fit to be my daughter.”

“Perhaps we should summon her to the court to explain herself.” Minister Sanada spoke up. “I’m sure that she will have a goo-“

“Be silent” The Emperor’s voice was ice cold, “before I come to believe that you are defending the actions of a traitor.” Sanada’s mouth snapped shut, his face losing all color as he bowed his head. “I tire of barbarians meddling in my affairs. It is time we teach this Uther a lesson. Admiral Lian!”

The holographic image of Admiral Lian stepped forward and bowed. “How may I serve?”

“Your fleet shall spearhead our invasion of the Imperial Remnant.”

“We are… invading the Remnant?” Lian hesitantly asked.

“Of course we are!” The Emperor snapped. “Clearly the are an enemy! We must destroy our enemies before they destroy us! How can you not understand that?!”

Saeko turned and saw the holographic of her brother staring at her, a look of dismay on his face that was surely matched by one on her own. Shoichi slowly nodded his head before he shifted his gaze back up to their uncle. “Uncle” Shoichi said. “I would caution restraint and caution in how we respond to this.”

“You fool” The Emperor spat. “Hesitation will only lead to death.”

Shoichi winced but pressed on “Our enemies expect us- No! They hope that we react rashly. They want us to attack! And that is exactly why we should not. Let us not do as our enemies wish, instead let us frustrate their plans! We shall fight them, but on our terms not there.”

The Emperor remained silent for a moment before calmly saying “What you say has merit, Shoichi. Very well… we shall not allow our enemies to distract us from our current objective.”

And that was that. Saeko felt like she had been punched in the gut when she realized that Yuki’s sacrifice would be in vain. She must have known that she would be labeled as a traitor for acting as she did, but had done so anyways in the hopes of obtaining peace. And Saeko herself was partly at fault for pushing Yuki into a situation where she would be forced to sacrifice her life for what she felt was right. It wasn’t what she had wanted.

Saeko looked down at her hand, which was shaking uncontrollably. She could remain silent and let Yuki’s sacrifice be for naught or she could stand up and do something. Clenching her hand into a fist, Saeko forced herself to look up at her uncle. “I advise that we delay our invasion of the Second Imperium.”

“Explain yourself” The Emperor’s demand held a promise of death in it.

“Although Yuki’s actions were a betrayal she was still negotiating on behalf of Musashi at the time. Should we arbitrarily go back on her promise the other countries will believe that we do not honor our agreements.”

“Yuki does not speak for Musashi.” The Emperor stated. “Thus Musashi is not bound to what she may believe she had negotiated with the Imperial Remnants.”

“But other countries will not see it that way!” Saeko countered. “We will forever be seen as untrustworthy and without honor!”

The Emperor turned his gaze to Xiang as he asked “Does the ministry of foreign affairs agree with this assessment?”

“It does” Xiang said. “An invasion of the Second Imperium would be catastrophic at this point in time. I humbly beg that you reconsider.”

“Hmmm…. Very well” The Emperor stated. Shoichi couldn’t hide his disappointment. “Musashi shall not invade the Second Imperium at this time; but neither shall Musashi blood be shed defending it. And from his point on our navy is to lock down the border with the Second Imperium. Any ship, civilian or military, that attempts to cross the border without my explicit permission is to be destroyed.”

“As for my daughter Yuki.” The Emperor continued. “Henceforth she is stripped of her status as a member of the imperial family and is no longer to be considered my daughter. She will be brought to me, where I will personally see to her punishment.”

He paused for a moment before adding “That is all.” The various members of the court rushed to leave the presence of their Emperor. Word of what had occurred would spread, and quickly, throughout Musashi and beyond. Only time would tell what sort of ripple effect it would have.

Once the throne room was emptied of his servants the Emperor removed his mask as he stated “You do not approve.”

“No I do not” Kau Rong said as she stepped into his line of sight.

The Emperor let out a long sigh before saying “She made her choice.”

“And so did you.”

“What is it you expect from me?” The Emperor sounded weary, exhausted. “She was the one who betrayed me.”

“She wasn’t the first to betray you,” Kau Rong said. “And she certainly won’t be the last. It’s what happens when you push others too far.”

“They can all rot” The Emperor spat. Kau Rong slowly shook her head, her face a mask of sorrow.

“I wish I knew what it was that blackened your soul so.” She let out a long sigh before turning and heading towards the door.

“Where are you going?” The Emperor demanded. When she didn’t respond he shouted “Mother!”

Kau Rong stopped to look at him, her expression one of pity. “I am not your mother.”
