The monster hadn't encountered projectile explosives before. Thinking it was a normal arrow that had been fired, it would hold up its left wing for a casual block.

BOOMSH!

The creature was send spiraling into the smoke, landing in a writhing heap. The membrane of its wing, normally sturdy enough to stop a rifle, had been stripped off by the fierce explosion. What's more, the arm was broken and severely lacerated, a limp length of shredded meat and bone.
It wasn't often that the Magna Pater was injured. Often it went centuries without bleeding. But when it did, a new set of instincts took over. Silhouetted against the burning trees, the creature threw back its head and
for the first time during the conflict, made a sound. A warbling, lunatic cackle that rose and dipped with maddening pitch before descending into what sounded like an inhuman sobbing so chilling, that a man would need to be as solid as stone to not feel his flesh crawling up his back.

It went straight for James again. Dead for him and with a demeanor not like before. It had gone berserk from the pain, the pain that it felt ever so rarely. It healed by consuming blood, and now that it was hurt it would do anything to drink. It would be upon the swordsman in a second, body shearing through the smoke as it sought the prey. Even with one working arm, it was dangerous. More now than before, even.
We'll figure something out eventually.
@SkallagrimIf Zande doesn't throw the axe and just lands behind Tanya, she reaches the dagger and we both die anyways. Zande because one wound will remove his soul, and Tanya because she is bound by Rules Snake not to use a weapon under penalty of death. On the other hand Empty mentioned that the binding circle on the floor was the last one Tanya had enough magic in her to make, and so if she doesn't grab the dagger Zande will just turn around and hack her into mincemeat. I know there's a running theme about the "last four posts" going on here, but I only said that on a whim at the time since I figured the match would at the least be decided as a draw. We'd need to go back six posts I'd say, since that was the point where either character could one-shot the other without having any supreme advantage.

Shashous-Throth lunged from the burning tree, spreading its wings as it swooped in towards where it sensed James was. The smoke might have fooled an organism that relied on sight, but the greasy horror could find things by sound and heat. What it did if it reached him would depend heavily upon what sort of resistance it was met with. Not much, most likely, for if a normal foe couldn't see through the smoke then neither could James.
@SkallagrimThat would allow Empty the freedom to change Tanya's positioning whilst Zande would pretty much be in no position to do anything at all. We'd need to reverse back at least several posts to get to a fair point, and that'd be one hell of a big retcon. I'm okay with it if Empty is, but it'd be pretty annoying.
The Magna Pater fucking ditched that party. Exit stage left. Gone like the breaking wind. Made like a hockey player and got the puck outa there.

It was entirely capable of fighting off a small army of opponents, but it vehemently disliked being out in the open with more than one enemy. A straight up confrontation went against all of its instincts. It bolted away from the ice and speared through the treeline, sinking into the inky blackness that the moonlight couldn't reach. That something so big could move so swiftly, it was outrageous. As if a black mamba had grown to gigantic proportions and yet hadn't lost any speed due to the added weight, a heavyweight that moved like a flyweight, a near violation of the square/cube law. It knew by now that the ranger could see it, but the swordsman couldn't. That made the primary target obvious. All predators went after the stragglers in a herd. The ones that were less capable, less wary. It would snake up a tree several meters behind James, coiling into the branches with nary a sound.
@EmptyArmorI don't really think I can offer up any ideas, considering what's on the table. Zande dies from having his soul ripped out, Tanya dies from having her soul ripped out, double soul sharts, brown pants all around. That is of course assuming the ruling is in favor of her reaching the dagger before the axe hits. It seems like Zande's airborn axe tossing and Tanya's mad ducking skills might cancel each other out in terms of impracticality, leaving it up to a wild guess to determine a true winner, if there is one.
The monster released Ruby's arm and leg as she stabbed its tail, aiming to slip away from her as quickly as it had come. There was no reason for it to risk further injury from dying prey. Both legs and an arm were mangled, and she was bleeding furiously. It would rest and watch the thief in silence, a dim nightmare that was to be the only witness to her final moments.
@EmptyArmor
LeeRoy has a point there. You told me that you wanted to see the fight through to the end, and it certainly seems as if both of our characters are set to die and neither of us will likely give in. We could roleplay out a mutual kill.
