In our world, there are preserves that hold all the mythical creatures of lore. They are extensive, acres and acres of land. Some have areas changed into impossible biomes to allow these creatures to live comfortably. These places are guarded against human eyes and technologies by extreme and powerful magic. The preserves and all its inhabitants are cared for by Rangers, a title and jobs passed down through a family. These people have some small magical ability and resistance to much of the mind magic that the creatures might force against them. This is the story of Lochpine Preserve.

There is a parking lot located at the edge of a highway in Wisconsin. Across the way is a field of cows. The parking lot leads to a novelty store which sells beautiful, handcrafted items. These items are created by the residents of Lochpine. Some do have a small amount of magical ability, nothing harmful to the human world. Most are just intricate artworks made by the Fair Folk. This shop is tended by outsiders, people who are hired and work if they don’t get too close to the truth. The store is called “Goldie Loch”

Behind the shop is a thick forest. The path is only large enough to allow a four-wheeler through. Some ways ahead is a small house where the Ranger of Lochpine lives. This house and yard are a safe place. The Fair Folk cannot enter either without express permission. Some benign fairies live in the yard and preserve the garden. Except on solstice nights, when they may enter the yard but never the home.

Beyond the home are beautiful forests. Thriving, decaying swamps. Tall mountains. Dry deserts. Pristine lakes. All throughout the nearly endless preserve are areas where the Fair Folk may find their homes. Many, in fact, most places, are extremely dangerous. In some areas, a human may find an ally. However, only the Ranger and his kin may gain control over those in the preserve and has explicit safety.

The preserve is currently controlled by Ranger Rick. She has not married, and her family has passed away, allowing her to gain the official title of Ranger. She takes care of all the beings in this place and she is a very busy lady.

ROLES/EXAMPLES

1 shopkeep who discovers the secret of Lochpine due to some family heritage (of your choice, within reason)

The Fair Folk – I will accept nearly anything. Please be reasonable. I am willing to work things out with you but please consider what might be too far. It does not have to be listed to be accepted. Below are just some ideas.

Dragons: They can live in any biome and their appearance and abilities will depend on that biome. They are also hoarders who will take exclusively that which they view as exemplary artwork. A dragon may choose to hoard gold and treasures. One artwork. And another, butterflies. Their collections vary but they desire to collect only one thing. They may take human form. (I will only accept one dragon) [Dragons from other parts of the world (example: Eastern or South American) will also be accepted!]

Unicorn: They are beautiful creatures varying in colour. Their abilities include things like healing powers, purity which only allow those with good intentions to meet or touch them, and the growth of plant life. They also may take human form. (Max of two in character unicorns though there may be a herd of NPCs)

Fairy: Small and sassy little creatures. They are genderless, though may take on a gender should they choose for procreation purposes. Their magic is light – creating bubbles, rejuvenating plant life, making music, and general merry things. Rarely they may fall in love with a human at which time they can grow to the same size at the loss of an abundance of their power.

Satyrs: They are troublemakers and partiers. They are not malicious by nature but can sometimes get themselves into or create negative situations. They are “fair weather friends” only around when things are well. Will take off when things get hinky – though some have been known to perform acts of magnanimity and bravery.

Dryads, nymphs, and naiads: they are always women and do not differ much from legend. They are not particularly fond of humankind and will try to harm them if allowed. Some have been known to be kind to those they favour though and will give them a blessing to force others of this clan (all the above, and related cousins are so) to not harm them. This is given by way of a deep kiss.

Trolls: For the most part they are exceedingly intelligent. They collect works of knowledge. Books detailing history or instructional manuals. They will also collect treasure as a way of bribing others to collect knowledge from them. They are clever, ruthless, and known to cheat on a deal if able. Their magical ability and appearance depend on their preferred biome. (not a required character) [I should also note this is an example of a troll and other sorts will be accepted!]

~@~------------~@~

RULES/What will NOT be accepted:

Overpowered/overly fantastical creatures (OF COURSE)

Witches, warlocks and the like

The shopkeep does not have magical powers beyond an immunity to charms/mind control/diversion magic. They may gain and use magical items in the future though.

Evil creatures – Good to Neutral only

Most non-humanoid creatures should be able to have a human form. Some have lived outside of the preserves for a lengthy amount of time so they should be able to blend as intelligent life forms. A human form is not required unless specified above, but can be fun should we need to leave the preserve for any reason.

Made up creatures - If it is not something I recognize I will ask for proof of its tale. Please do not be offended. I would like this to run more off mythology and I want you to get creative with the source material. (source material being Fablehaven or just your run of the mill mythos.) You may make some edits to current beasts, I am willing to consider and discuss this.

Beginning: Characters establish themselves and some relationships. Perhaps work this out beforehand. You have lived on this preserve for a number of years. It makes sense to have numerous friends.

First Arc: A magical artifact has been stolen which endangers the preserves. We must seek it out and bring it back to be hidden before it exposes the preserves to a population who will never be ready.

Bride of Gwillim @Tracyarmav and Sister Bride of Hestia @eclecticwitch
Interacting with Gwillim and Alfhi

It had been a very strange night, to say the least. First, she was thrust upon some Drakken as chattel and then, walking down the street, she was taken. She had watched, in fear, the duel between the two men. She felt the blood spatter on her face and saw his lifeless form on the ground. Tempe wasn't sure what to think. Normally a bit of a spitfire, the sight of blood had caused her to become complacent. She dutifully followed the man, not wanting to incur his wrath. There were other girls, just as terrified as she.

In the end, she was guided to a room which she thankfully, somehow, had to herself. After washing the blood from her face and removing the offensive clothing, she slept fitfully. The next morning came late. Her clothing from the night before had disappeared and a simple dress of soft oranges took their place. She washed up and donned her new clothing. She had no direction and so did what one would naturally do in such a dangerous situation. She wandered the keep. She was lost for only a half of an hour before she came upon a room containing two people.

One of these people was the man from the night before. The other was a smaller (albeit taller than Tempe) Drakken girl who was snuggled up next to him. She tilted her head in curiosity. She would not have expected anything close to tender affection coming from the violence of the night before. Carefully she entered the room and approached the platters of food.

"Beggin' mah parden sir. But am I to be servin' yeh?" She inquired and gestured toward the dishes. "I will tell yeh, I ain't never served a theng in mah life. So I must be a beggin' yer patience." Tempe fiddled idly with the sleeves of her dress, her eyes downcast. The floor tended to be very interesting this time of year.

Sister Bride of Aubree @Ellion and Bride of Kagan @ghastlyInc
Interacting with Kagan, Bree, and Javem

She couldn't help but laugh lightly at Javem's friendly cajoling about her use of words. She supposed it had been a bit much but she had always loved using the eloquence of language to describe her own happiness. Introductions could be a beautiful thing, why not have a bit of fun with it? Aubree let the older Drakken know her name and Adorabella stuck out her tongue and put a knuckle to her temple. "Oh, silly me. I forgot to actually introduce myself again. A thousand apologies, Miss Javem."

The two Drakkan discussed the places to put the brand and nervousness made her heart race. It was going to be painful no matter where it was placed. But it had to be done. Whining and complaining would only put her in a predicament to be returned to the hornless prince. She had no desire to go back so she would accept it in good spirits. At the touch and pinch to her bare flesh, she let out a quiet gasp of surprise. She hadn't expected to be touched so. And their speaking of her body caused for both amusement and derision.

Kagan gave the command that she should pick the placement of her brand. Adora thought for a long moment before looking between the two Drakken. "I think I should like mine here," she brushed her fingers lightly over the skin just below her left collarbone. Easy to see and she could wear it over her heart as a reminder of her place. At Javem's look, she smiled reassuringly. "I understand that it may be more painful here than other places. But if I am taken by another man out of turn that will be much more painful, I should think. I am well prepared for this. I have removed wooden shrapnel from a man's torso before." With that, she took a seat in a chair. At Javem's question she laughed again and replied, "I was a medicine woman once upon a day. Say, would you terribly mind using some of that alcohol to clean the area before the branding?"
The smelly substance was cool against her skin. From between her breasts, Adora pulled a couple of handkerchiefs which she wound together thickly. She placed them in her mouth to give her something to bite down on and not ruin her teeth. Her fingers gripped the arms of the chair in preparation to hold something in the moments that the brand would touch her.

As she made her own preparations, Javem heated the letters to be used. Adora closed her eyes and with each burning mark, she clenched her jaw and the chair. Halfway through the brand, she could not contain her calls of pain. The scent of her burning flesh made her feel ill. Nearby buckets of water exploded, raining steaming droplets down upon those near. But still, she sat, hardly able to move anyway. Almost done. She could tell. As the last letter hit her skin she could hardly feel it she had become so numbed with the pain of it.

Adora hardly heard the Drakkan tell her she was done. Blearily she opened her eyes and a shaky hand removed the handkerchiefs from her mouth, letting them fall to the floor. She glanced down at the angry red marks on her chest and then up at Javem. "Thank you..." she whispered. She attempted to stand but found her legs would not obey. She frowned and scooted forward in the chair, placing the weight on her legs a bit at a time. Finally, she brought herself up and clung to the arm of the chair as she moved out of the way.

Her eyes caught Kagan and she walked toward him. She sank down at his feet and rested her sweaty forehead against his knee. Her whole body was shaking and her mind refused to function. "I am sorry," she managed to murmur before she took the time to calm herself and let the pain of it ebb away. It was done. Hopefully, she would never have to do it again.

Adora stopped her habitual tidying in order to follow her new husband and sister out into the world. She only pasued to pocket her healing slave from the top of her trunk. The hallways were much quieter. Perhaps due to the early hour or the exertion of the night before. The daylight warmed the earth and the scent of the drying mud with a hint of iron filled the air. She welcomed the bright rays onto her skin and the nearly cloudless sky filled her with hope. Despite the quiet of the hotel, it seemed that there were many Drakkan, along with their brides, out and about. Most of the girls looked haggard and worn. Adora felt pity for them, wondering how harshly their husbands had treated them. For perhaps the hundredth time, she felt lucky that the man who was now her husband appeared to be reasonable, rational, and perhaps even kind by the standards of the race.

She could hardly keep herself calm. Excitement at this new world and to her future put energy into her step. As the moved through the soggy streets there were so many things which caught her eye. Beautiful fabrics, ornate hair ornaments, weaponry finely crafted, and even produce from the area. Her curiosity filled her stomach and a couple of times she had inadvertently wandered toward one of the sellers who hoped to capture her interest and thereby her husband's so as to make a purchase. Their words and appearance calculated to bring a curious gem into their grasp. Kagan dutifully pulled her back and she would murmur embarrassed apologies. She began to understand why he wished them so close. Once her awe at the beauty of life in a Drakken city had abated somewhat, she could see the men's roving over the gems. Perhaps luckily, though Adora was more apt to deal with their desires, their lustful looks were mostly focused on Bree.

His long legs were a bit difficult to keep up with but she managed. They paused as a new scent pervaded the air. It was sickly and rancid. It reminded her of the times she had to deal with a gangrenous limb that she would have to remove and then stitch up. The limb would need to be burned. The reality of this had finally settled into her throat as a lump. She glanced at Kagan, relieved to find him preoccupied with her terrified sister. It gave her time to calm her own heart and put on her strong face. She hugged her stomach, looking over the building. It could use some care.

As they were to enter the building, another Drakken man left. He dragged along behind him his beautiful gem. Words were burned into her forehead and Adora winced. The poor thing. It would bleed easily and the chances of infection were great if not properly taken care of. She lightly touched her own forehead as she watched the girl get dragged away. She was brought out of her stillness by the door beginning to swing shut. Adora hurried behind Kagan and Bree.

The inside of the home was much warmer and friendlier than she had anticipated. Certainly much more so than the outside of the home belied. She took time to take in the surroundings. It seemed, at least, clean. This, as a healer, she could appreciate. The owner took pride in their craft and that made the situation less terrifying. Especially considering what her craft was. She brought her attention back to Kagan as she watched him hug the ancient Drakken. She wondered how many managed to make it to this age. And how long they had known each other. She couldn't imagine too many people would be able to call Kagan a brat (albeit lovingly) without losing their tongue. As she listened, Adora pressed her hand to her lips to suppress her giggles.

When the conversation turned to Bree and herself she did her best to compose her features. She lifted the hand away from her face and stepped forward. "It is of my greatest and utmost honour to make your acquaintance, madame." With the grace only a childhood climbing trees and an adulthood forcing proper protocol could give, she dipped into a sweeping, low curtsey to the woman. She wore a sincere and sweet smile on her lips as she stepped closer, somewhat hesitantly. "My heart could not bear more pleasure, lest it burst, to meet a friend of my new Master, Kinner Galegar." She glanced up at Kagan, searching for some proof that she had done well. She risked only a moment before turning her smiling face on the woman again. "May I say what a practical and extraordinary establishment you have created here?"

It was a lovely day on a familiar planet. Not that she had ever been to this place before. Simply she was accustomed to the bright sun bouncing even brighter off of the sand. And to the heat that pressed down on the people in the grand market. Ailita wore her usual grey mechanic's jumper, a giant sun hat, and a pair of thick sunglasses to protect her eyes from the glare. Batto had moved himself so his head rested upon her chest, able to get some glimpse of the heat. She had bought a fruit candy, something similar to a sucker made of some sort of cactus. It was sweet and tangy.

"Ssssssun bathhhheeee," said a silky voice. It belonged to Batto as he whispered his desire in her brains.

"Don't be silly, the day is too.... day like, to do any of that. I'd burn to a crisp," she replied around her treat.

"Waaaaarmthhhhh," he hissed.

"Deeeaaaaath," she countered.

"Meeeeanie."

"No you."

Her callused fingers kept hold of the stem as she enjoyed her flavoured treat. It seemed a day of celebration. Beautiful voices filled the air with tribal song. Even though she did not know it, she found herself humming along poorly. Shopkeeps called to her to buy her wares. She had not much money and so was looking to provide her own services. This planet had plenty of ships she could make a quick buck or two off of. Unfortunately, her dreams of playing with engines died as the sounds of threat replaced the song.

She could hear blade and gun slice through bodies. It was a sound with which she was familiar. Quickly she ducked behind the nearest stall as people began to run. What was causing such commotion? She peeped over the edge of the stall, eyes searching out the attackers.

Reavers.

She scowled and spit out her delectable treat. Jerks. Batto tutted his annoyance and slithered up the back of her skull, feathery marks forming around her face as tribal designs danced around her eyes as if she wore a moving mask. One of her arms turned completely black, glowing with cracks of light pink energy. The other formed itself into a dark grey short sword attached to her elbow. At her neck buzzing and flittering designs curled and danced causing her flesh to imperceptibly harden.

Ailita stood from her position behind the stall as the worried shopkeep watched her. "Run," she whispered to him as she found herself in the frey. She lifted her blackened arm and a beam of energy released, cutting through the reavers like a laser of doom. She had made herself well known now. She was being shot at. The energy blasts hit her and rainbows of color flashed as they absorbed the energy to place it back into the arm. With each shot, the cracks of pink grew brighter.

She walked toward them, a grim expression on her face. Normally she would have qualms about killing, though Batto thrilled on it. The Reavers were a different story all together. She blasted and cut her way through her enemies, helping the fleeing masses to escape. Eventually, she found herself with a group of mercenaries and a white-haired man. "Afternoon," she greeted what appeared to be the head mercenary. "Care for some help?" Before she could receive an answer she felt a knife in her back. It was thrown, a cleverer Reaver than the rest. He had tossed it since the plasma bullets didn't work. The knife penetrated her armor a bit, drawing red hot blood from her flesh and staining her greys. With a frown, she turned and blasted the bastard into dust. "Fucker," she mumbled. "Now I gotta get a new jumper. That costs money," she yelled at the non-existent body.

"Beeee more caaaarefuuul," Batto growled as he pushed the dagger out of her back. It clunked mutedly into the sand. Bright dancing rainbow lights gathered around the opening and shining through the tear in her greys.

"Hey now, it's not like I asked him to," she responded bitterly.

Interacting with Kagan and Bree

Adora barely contemplated what her sister said to her regarding her already being a slave. As she saw it, she had more freedom here than she'd had back home as a noblewoman. Though, time could only tell if her ability to do what small things she wished would remain. Besides, there was a difference between subservience to her Drakkan overlords and to a sister bride. No matter how grumpy that girl may be.
---------
It was.... Fine.

Fine?

He wasn't upset or angered by her touch? She paused to glance over her shoulder at him as her fingers touched the salve and wrap in question. She brought them with her back to the table despite his insistence that it had been cleaned. She set the salve and gauze wrap on the table as she knelt at his side. Her fingers reached out and touched the back of his hand, the tips skimming the surface. She could feel the bones beneath his flesh. His skin here was surprising soft compared to the calluses which covered his palm and fingers. When the hand appeared free she took it in her own and raised the palm to her lips where she placed soft kisses along the palm of it. She then pressed her cheek into the palm, looking up into his eyes with worry lacing her own black orbs.

"Despite it having been cleaned, when exposed to outside sources infection is still a possibility. I would feel eternally relieved if you would allow me this small token of affection." Her words came out half whispered as she turned her lips toward the palm again. Once she had his acceptance a bright smile lit up her features. She removed the lid from the salve and as delicately as possible spread it over the gash. The salve had a slight warming property to it and smelled of an earthy wood and mint. Once the cut was properly covered, a layer of white potion so thick the cut could not be seen, she wound the wrap around his palm. Tight enough that it would not move but loose enough to allow him full range of motion. She tied the wrap off and set about putting her medicinal supplies away.

The next thing he said shocked her slightly. As she closed the lid of her trunk a flutter of hope spread its wings in her heart and flitted about her belly. Collars? Brands? Were they mere chattle? She supposed so, though this statement meant, perhaps, he had decided to keep her after all. She wouldn't be killed? Slave to a fairly calm Drakkan was so much better than her death. She did not look forward to the branding, of course. But if it meant she could stay then she was willing to let him put scars all over her face and take her feet. And some light shopping? At least he was offering them something fun, some sort of bribe for their acquiescence. She allowed herself to hope this was not some stab back at the prince when he returned her. That he really did intend to bring her back to his home. That was what he was saying after all. Adora felt lighter than she had that morning. Than even the night before. She would not allow herself relief just yet. But hope was harmless, wasn't it?

"Is it a meeting with the prince?" she inquired, coming back to join the pair. After additional movements of his hand with the wrapping on she did a quick check that it had stayed firmly in place. Once satisfied that it had, she placed a hand on his shoulder and offered him a light kiss on the cheek before wandering off to begin the process of packing things up and tidying the bed. She felt that she was practically walking on air.

I am certain we still are, feel free to apply!!!

While security removed Blizz's dampeners, Yatzil approached one of the lockers along the wall to remove her favourite weapon. A cricket bat with teeth. She did a few practice swings with it, feeling the weight in her hands. She then proceeded to slice her fingers open and draw symbols on her arms and legs. On her arms were symbols of power and her legs had symbols of speed. Within a minute the wounds on her hand healed and she crossed the room to stand beside the ice armoured man. Being near him was freezing but she was sure it would feel nice after the workout. She set the sword on the floor, the hilt leaning against her hip. She tied her hair back into a ponytail, a sign that she was ready to get this party started. "We can begin?" she inquired, turning her face up toward him. Her brown eyes twinkled with excitement.

She lifted her sword at the ready and took a combat stance, watching the robots with a grotesquely animalistic grin. The bots began to move and she watched them carefully, her eyes taking in each step and swing of its "hands". Her mind started to go blank, taking in the scene with her instincts more than her brain. She could feel the muscles in her legs tighten, her grip on the weapon slackened slightly. In a flash she took a step forward and swung the blade upward, slicing against the metallic chest of the robot. It made a hideous screeching sound she found irritating and she lightly stepped around the robot to get better access to its back. "Come slowpoke," she said teasingly. "I cannot be the only one with fun." She sliced the blades across the robots back but it anticipated the attackedc and rolled forward, deftly escaping her assualt.
