heh, @ScienMalefica. Don't worry about it. We've no idea yet how ours will end up, but it'll be a long read. Hopefully worth reading, though.

When is it appropriate to bump a check?

Not too often. But it tends to be beneficial when the RP goes to the second page, or when you know you'll be away for a number of hours (like sleep) and its likely to drop down to second page in that time. But of course, its true that there are typically more active RP checks in one section than fits on one page, so...

From what we've looked, the sections it feels more reasonable to do it often in are 1x1 and casual. No idea about free, arena or tabletop. Advanced requires far less bumping, as that rarely gets close to a full page of active checks.

That is very true. If you want to write really long, you need to have it really engaging to make people not stop reading halfway out of boredom.
