It'd be cool if some of the first models were faulty and cause severe headaches. Just to add a bit of color to the world. EDIT: Also, can you explain how the semi-sentience works? I know you said you wanted to leave it up to us, but I'd like to know what you meant by them being "animalistic".
Well, the Empire and then the Kingdom have been using the neurouplink things for millenia- but there's no reason the augmentics cant have downsides, at least in some cases (some people might suffer migranes, it may affect sanity over time, etc), so that might be an interesting character trait/quirk for some. As for the semisentience, theres room for differences between different ships that can always be explained by differences in AI aging, the different mental impressions left by officers over the centuries, etc. For some, the semisentience may behave as a typical ship computer system, but my idea was that over the ages each AI has been molded by the minds that have touched it and been given their own quirks and developed their intelligences in different ways. If you want your AI to be like Cortana and have a well developed personality and basically make your ship a full fledged character, that's permitted absolutely. IF you'd rather it not have that level of personality, that's fine too. The animalistic thing- i just thought the idea of these ships as being huge beasts of prey, having at once highly developed computational skills and a nonhuman type of rational intelligence would be cool. Perhaps your ship's intelligence is a bit like a dog or a shark- not quite rational and communicative, but having certain aims, habits, quirks, preferences, etc. in addition to all of the computery things it can do. Make sense? Also, please note that I really am happy for people to do what they want with the semi-sentience idea. As i said, there's plenty of space for variation.
Flagg, quick question: are the neural uplinks with the ships visible or under the skin?
under the skin, but most uplinked folks probably have a small patch of metal or w/e on their forehead. So, slightly visible?
Forgot that we have the character tab now. I'll leave this here but corrections and additions will only be made to the post on the character sheet.
Really great CS, gorgenmast! One minor correction- you refer to the Valyrian forces as imperial when they should be called Royal, since Valyria is only a kingdom. The Arcturian Empire is more than a century dead. The Kingdom was an imperial client state and now considers itself the rightful successor to the empire.
Two new ship classes added, the Hoarfrost corvette and the Carcharadon destroyer, which will be one of the primary escort vessels of the Royal Fleet. These ships are courtesy of CommodoreRobot's fertile imagination. I've opened this pirate pad: http://piratepad.net/9uLk85XlvJ which we can use to collaborate and where you can ask me any questions you may have more easily. Pop in if you're interested.
I wouldn't say he's 'inferior'--but Apedemak was made to be robust. Those that engineered him valued simplicity, durability, reliability, functionality, and redundancy over aesthetics and the implementation of state of the art technology, hence why his design paradigms (somewhat) mirror those of the august T-72 MBT or the A-10 Thunderbolt II and not customary aircraft or seacraft. Basically, he's a space tank--er, correction: a super-heavy space tank with an over-clocked bundle of torch drives nuclear salt-water rockets welded to his ass. A proper Lightning Bruiser if you will.
Whatever you like. But I will ask that you use a HSR2 or HSR3 ship, comparable to the ships other players will be making. It would make sense for you to have smaller escorts of your own race, since you're essentially a mercenary force. You could even be working for the enemies of the Kingdom- in fact, if you're in tereted, that might be an interesting way to go.
@Samebito and ASTA: wow, lots of cats and dogs. Firstly, as I mentioned I've asked players to play ships HSR 3 or less. I think for xenos privateers/allies, I'll ask you guys to play as HSR 2 or below ships (you can play as more than one- a small fleet or task force, perhaps?- and the ships can be of xenos origin and design). It doesnt really make sense for a humanocrentric state like the Kingdom to give the most powerful hardware to mercenaries and xenos auxiliaries.
Vres received her equipment from her own people, not the Kingdom. They're not a protectorate nor a subject species, but more like a sizable alliance of chiefdoms that rent out a percentage of their respected space forces to suitable buyers in exchange for partial (or full) looting rights. The limitation on alien ship sizes, at least from my POV, seems arbitrary. I must've missed the bit on HSR4s, however.
Gotcha. I guess that works. Could you do a HSR3 merc-raider w/ HSR2 and HSR1 escorts? You may want to work out how your xenos ship compares to the Imperial models used by the barbarians and the Kingdom. My sense is that it would be somewhat technologically inferior, but may boast some advantages for its unorthodox construction. Seems like we have a lot of raiders/mercs/privateers in this RP. I may adjust how the IC was going to start accordingly. Also, I'd be curious to know about your xenos' history during the Empire and the Dark Ages, and how they came to work for the Kingdom.

Quick question about Semi-sentiences. What kind of intelligence do they have? Or rather I guess to what degree does a ship's semi-sentience have a personality?
Sorry for the double post- I over looked this. I deliberately kept this somewhat vague to see what folks come up with. I would say...do whatever you want with it, and we'll retcon in reasons for the differences btwn the Semi-Sentiences in the different ships. My original idea was for the ship be have a sort've low grade, animal like consciousness...that the individual ships are kindve alive, huge beasts of prey, and that captains and officers can tap into and tame this as they integrate with their ships. So like big dogs...in space, with guns and targeting reticules and stuff... But that's just what my idea was, no need to stick to it.' @Inkblood: Captain.
I would go for the second in command. if you still want an admiral, u can make one as a secondary character or background figure, but the second in command gives us more inter character interaction which is good for the start of an rp. My 2 cents.
well well well, battlegroup rho is shaping up nicely quite without me having to do anything! Good stuff. @InkBlood- a modified Indoril class might suit your character nicely as well. @CommodoreRobot: Will read your PM now! looking forward to it. Given the popularity of the Aryon class, I think I'm going to make Commodore Morning's ship something different, in case that matters to anyone. So far we have two battlegroups- Epsilon and Rho. Rho will focus on raids/deep strikes/special ops, Epsilon on engaging the main enemy forces. Folks can join either one or start their own. We could still use an admiral.
