Master of Gatekeeper

Koume "Baba" Kurojishi, Edge of Shinto Town

The Clockwork Fortress of Troy, At the Gates of Troy

Baba merely nodded along with the vulgar little horse-man. Of course everything he said stood to reason, the 'End Point' of Troilus' existence was decidedly underwhelming compared to any of Chiron's students. "It will be considered thorughly." Without anything else to add or contest in terms of his warning she merely turned away, back towards the discarded shell of the Great Black Lion.

"Come, Gatekeeper, Gin. We break for tea." She barked out almost like an order. Even with her soft disposition towards Troilus she would not show weakness in front of the others, at least not yet.

As she stepped towards the hulking shell of the karakuri its chest creaked open. Multiple layers of armor, driving springs, and guiding wires folding away in intricate manner to form a set of stairs up towards the opening, from what should have been entirely different components. As she ascended them they retreated, reforming the hull of the monstrous machine seamlessly, as if it had never been there to begin with.

When her voice returned it boomed like thunder, "Do watch your step." Earth shaking steps carried the literal ton of puppet and its little old lady cargo onward, to lead the way through ever-changing the city of peril.

Two steps into her little 'date', literally, and a glint of red lacquer in the distance caught her eye. "Darling, get down!" She said, betraying her usually hushed tone with an uncharacteristic urgency. She didn't give any time for him to comply either. A rough shove, human rough not servant rough, sent Ana sprawling back towards the clearing as Berserker raised her now free hand- body surging with an uptick of mana.

The impact was nothing short of incredible. A sound like thunder, a whirlwind of leaves, all but the stoutest of trees recoiling back as if in shock, and most curiously a sudden spattering of gore across the clearing- especially upon Shuten herself. Had her body not stood between her master and the contents of her freshly returned bowl the high-velocity viscera would almost certainly have killed him. For the Oni it was like a warm rain.

"Darling, it seems I've found my vessel. Please wait while I go and clean it." Her languorous tone returned, punctuated with a giggle and her tongue cleaning the warm blood from her lips.

As intriguing as the returned bowl was, it would not do to bring her master directly into the waiting maw of another. Besides, they were being watched already. Another throw, more of a toss really as far as Shuten was concerned, and the bowl went sailing through the trees again- handily shattering the Einzbern's familiar as it sailed through the forest to land in the waters of the harbor beyond.

Shuten followed shortly after, unburdened by her master and swifter than any wind. Swift enough to strip the vibrant red from her moon-pale flesh, and leave it far behind.

Edge of Shinto Town, Path to the Harbor

Amidst Broken Trees and Unborn Lightning.

She saw him on the path. That over-dressed dandy on his throne of tamed lightning. Her blood nearly boiled at the sight of it and the mana that comprised her body rose to a fevered surge. The bowl full of meat had been novel, intriguing, amusing even, until now. No, this was a grave insult, this was the worst possible sleight, the excavation of a grudge buried for a thousand years.

Raiko.

A shriek, the shriek of a demon raging in it's hell, pierced the night with a strength and fury that would split the lungs of any lesser creature. There was no trace of Shuten Douji, the oni who entertains the persona of an elegant yet indulgent maiden. There was only the king of mount Ooe, and her boundless rage at being cut down with vile trickery. "SCION OF THE COW! YOU WHO WOULD DISHONOR A PROUD KING OF THE ONI! UPON THE SOIL WHERE YOU STAND I WILL THROW A GRAND BANQUET OF DESTRUCTION! YOUR CORPSE SHALL BE THE SITE OF REVELRY UNBOUND!"

A hundred feet between them, but only one more step. Her bare toes dug into the ground so hard it trembled, and every ounce of power that deceptively tiny body could muster was released in a mighty lunge. An open hand closed around the hilt of an exquisite sword, wrought in gold and peerless steel, easily as big as the one holding it.

She would hear no answer to her fury. The second she closed the distance she would cut him down.

Berserker fell backwards as her master sprang up and landed flat on her back with a pout, displeased thoroughly with being so unceremoniously removed from her chair. It wasn't that he was particularly comfortable to lounge on, but it was the right of a king and the prerogative of a hedonist to use another's body as they pleased. Despite this she didn't spill a drop, her wrist was gyroscope steady and the red lacquer bowl stayed perfectly level throughout her trip through the air.

"Darling, you have the softest bones I've ever felt in my life... I don't think your skull is even hard enough to hold all the thoughts in your head." She sounded disappointed, genuinely rather than mockingly.

Without sitting up she threw the dish back again, finishing her sake and noisily licking her lips, and as was her way immediately began to pour anew. No sooner was the liquid past her lips than she raised her legs up, tucked her knees to her chest, and then threw herself back to her feet with a sudden kick forwards. Again nary a drop was spilled, and again she drained her vessel dry as she walked towards him again.

She stared into the empty bowl as she spoke, eyes following the last few drops at the very bottom as she slowly guided them in a circle with a subtle motion of the wrist. "I think it would be wise, no, absolutely necessary to toughen them up immediately if you want to keep up with the appetites of an Oni." Wistful, contemplative... Neither a particularly safe mood for an Oni to be in.

Her contemplations ended suddenly and in a cacophony, like a bolt of lightning from the blue. She threw the empty dish with every ounce of her strength, and it whizzed through the air audibly. Past Ana's face so close he would feel the shadow of death. Between the trees of their workshop and then through the forest itself- quite literally through parts of it by the sounds of crashing timbers as the bowl sliced clean through their trunks. Off into the distance towards... Town.

Her smile returned, bearing fangs, and with them a giggle. She hushed herself a second later and forced a look of mock surprise, placing a hand over her mouth to further insinuate shock. "Oh no, I've gotten all tipsy and dropped my favorite vessel... I can't possibly drink without it, so we had better go and get it yes?"

As she walked past him her arm linked with his, and her fingers laced betwixt his own with a strength that no human could ever pray to deny. "Come along now, Darling~!" She leaned against his shoulder, smiling up at him with laughter in her eyes while she more or less dragged him along the newly made path of fallen trees. Someone was eager to make up for lost time.

The Clockwork Fortress of Troy, Central Keep

The second the bounded field was violated the wall above Baba's workbench let out a series of loud chimes and a flash of light erupted. Without ceasing the work of her hands, which were still working on the central gearbox for what would soon be a horse, head jerked upwards.

A mechanical facsimile of the multi layered fortress stuck out crudely from the surface of the wall- updating constantly with the position of her familiars, among other things. At the front gate of the simulacrum there was a bright glow, the detection of a powerful spiritual body. No doubt a servant had arrived, and with that the elderly magus stopped her work.

A quick pull of a lever, a flip of a switch, and another gearbox on the table whirled to life and set a wheel covered in tiny twinkling crystals spinning. Spinning. Spinning. Faster and faster as they began to twinkle and glow. The increasing revolutions and the twinkling of the lights formed a picture of the fortress from above, and as Baba punched in another switch that corresponded with the gate on the castle map the twinkling light show zoomed in until, clear as day, the image of Archer banging on the door was before both of them. Crackling, gritty, mechanical, his voice came through to the pair clear as day.

When she spoke into the projection device her voice boomed through the entirety of the fortress- cold and cruel with a mechanical backing. "Coming into another's territory uninvited eh? You've got a lot of nerve, that or you're wet behind the ears with a head full of nightsoil...." It wasn't the method of projecting her voice alone, the tone itself was completely unlike the way she spoke to Troilus.

The ballista bristling along the crenelations of the wall all swiveled about at behest of the puppets arming them, to face the unwelcome guest. "Go on then, let's hear it. Pique my interest."

There was something of a long silence as the old lady contemplated the little one's questions. "I'm sure if your brother was summoned we will see him sooner or later. He'll want to stop by home for dinner won't he? And I'm sure he will be impressed with how big and strong you've gotten." It was much easier to indulge his naivety than explain that Hector would be, at least categorically, an enemy of the pair.

That was something she was still having trouble coming to terms with in the most general sense. She had summoned a child. A powerful spirit from the throne of heroes but none the less a child. He displayed crucial understanding of the situation on some levels but didn't seem to fully engage it as a reality, like it was all a big game.

Was everything she did from here forward an act of cruelty at the expense of childlike wonder?

Was there anything she could do to make him understand the situation fully without breaking his little heart?

Was she able to send him into battle knowing he could die?

Her face soured as she stared into the fire, before turning slowly again towards her servant. Perhaps this was all another cruelty of the gods, a final laugh in her face.

She cleared her throat before speaking again. "As for a horse..."Baba hopped out of her chair, quite literally since her little legs didn't reach the ground from the sitting position, and headed over towards the work bench she had set up on the far side of the room- braid dragging the ground after her. She had been inside the black lion for so long prior to the summons she had failed to realize how long her own hair had grown.

"I will make for you the most splendid horse you've ever seen my darling. None will compare." The smile crept back onto her face, and the laughter back into her voice. Then those gnarled old hands set to work with a rigor none could expect from an old hag.

As her master's face lit up and he began to ramble on Berserker only smiled. He certainly was a chatterbox, that much was for certain. Still, that unabashed excitement and utter lack of fear was incredibly interesting. He may lack certain qualities that Berserker considered to be ideal in a companion that enthusiasm was certainly admirable... Though he was ignoring the most generous gift offered him in favor of prattling on.

As he continued to talk she nmerely shrugged and began to withdraw the offered sake, to partake of it herself, when he suddenly decided it would be prudent to accept the offer... and down it all in one go. She smiled as he tipped over and laughed when he hit the dirt face-first. "Fufufu... My master certainly is adorably naive, isn't he? To take so readily to the hospitality of a demon..."

She shifted her position, reclining back on her elbow now and resting her feet on the now floored Magus' back. "It's no good to be too eager, even if it's endearing... Still you make quite a first impression boy, even if your bones are too soft by half." Again as she spoke she poured, though there was no offer this time. She tilted the bowl back slowly as it met her lips draining it gradually to the last drop, a pace that exhibited no particular rush but also knew no hesitation or rest. This was her nature surmised in a simple gesture, to indulge leisurely but completely.

Only once it was empty did she speak again, though yet again as her mouth busied itself with words her hands busied themselves with pouring so that she might punctuate her speech properly. "I am most often called me Shuten Douji... You also may call me this. Am I to call you by your name or do you prefer Master? Lord? Darling? Husband perhaps?" It was hard to tell if she was mocking him, such a voice was made for things like flattery but the conveyance of sincerity was an afterthought at most.

When she finished her second bowl of sake she shook him, gently, with the sole of her foot on his back. "...Are you alright boy?" That almost condescendingly sweet voice didn't make her sound particularly concerned. Regardless of sincerity where concern was concerned his status as Master was clearly an afterthought.

The hulking figure stood atop the fortress tower was a mess of airy black silks under a wide brimmed hat, further obscured by the beaded fringe around its edges that hung halfway to the ground. Its sight unseeing gazed out over the manor below, and beyond that the stone maze that marked it's domain for over a mile in every direction. Three days, one could only imagine what would have been possible if they could have started sooner. Still, this was enough.

A single monstrous hand extended from under the amorphous mound of obscuring cloth, a giant mass of charcoal black, shiny and smoot with fresh lacquer, with its open palm turned skyward. No sooner had it opened than a wooden sparrow covered in brass feathers alighted upon its newfound perch, with dead eyes and a tiny sliver of inky paper for a tongue. A tongue that quickly began to unravel, inch after inch, foot after foot, a string of numbers and symbols- most black, some red, that denoted the familiars findings. Once the tape began to run blank the hand closed, crushing the little mechanical bird into little more than dust. A few brass feathers fluttered down towards the labyrinth below, thin as razors and lost on the wind.

Several stories below, in front of a roaring fireplace, sat a little old lady gray as could be in an arm chair that could easily fit three of her. In her lap, a wooden sparrow with little feathers of brass and a wooden crank on it's back. She closed her eyes, and in the back of her brain the familiar and comforting sound of wood thudding against wood echoed. One. Two. Three twists. The sparrow stirred to life before leaping airborn and darting out the window.

The old woman pointed a gnarled and knobby hand at the open window, in the sparrows wake. "Look at him go Gatekeeper, he's off to find you someone to play with." A rich and vibrant voice, full of jolly laughter. "Now be a dear and close the window for Baba, I've not been outside in so long I'm liable to catch cold."

Outside of...?

Shuten Douji, Fuyuki Outskirts

Einnashe Workshop ‘Lucus’, center of the summoning circle

An offer of freedom accepted hastily and without second thought.

An eruption of light and sound amid the otherwise tranquil forest.

The aroma of ripened fruit, dripping fresh and gory.

The feeling of grass between the toes.

Oh such wonder to live again, such a feast of the senses already.

A... Child? Oh how peculiar.

Without even leaving the circle the servant seated herself, legs crossed, and immediately began to fiddle with the mouth of one of the many gourds that dangled heavily about her shoulders. A vulgar posture un-befitting of the beautiful form of a maiden, but perhaps not so shocking given those blood red horns.

Only after making herself comfortable did she speak, "So...You, a mere child, are my master? This is already so amusing." Her voice, soft and airy, quiet but heavy on the ear, it was certainly not the voice one would expect from her at first glance. Her questions where rhetorical. There was no eye contact nor apparent interest. Her focus didn't leave the vessel, which she had managed to uncork while she spoke.

She had existed in this world for less than a minute and already she was beginning to pour a drink. Not even so much as an introduction... Though she held the red lacquered bowl in her palm, now filled near to the brim with a clear liquid whose identity was betrayed by its aroma, out towards the boy.

Is it cool if we just use existing servants? If so I am totally on-board.
