@Shoryu Magami I think it was this comment here:

because it is often very hostile and antagonistic generally but I imagine given its competitive and dick-waving standards that comes with the territory.

That arena folks are more abrasive and confrontational because they enjoy writing about combat which is unfair to people who write for fantasy and escapism in general , that would be like tarring everyone in 1x1 perverts because a large majority of them like to write about sex/smut. But as long as we are clear we are talking about a minority that exist on all aspects of this site, then I dont have a real issue.

Again, I'm not aware enough of the particularity of your issues with people on the site, to really comment, but I would hope you don't leave. Especially because it helps to balance out the chaos of the idiocy of some people the guild with more reasonable types such as yourself.
I didn’t say “absolutely”, I said “generally”.

I think even generally the off-topic thread is fine, apart from a few threads, the place is quite welcoming and friendly. I do think the bitchfest and unpopular opinions thread make a loud minority look bigger than it is.
@Dynamo Frokane
Like I said, I don't really intend to get involved in this sort of discussion since a couple of unsavoury people on this site have, alongside a few other things, made me think of taking my leave from this place entirely and I don't really need the extra headache right now. Nevertheless, I will point out that the person who created this antagonism in the thread was very likely one of those Tabletop people you speak of.

Well that is unfourtanate and I wouldnt want to see you leave over a dispute, as I think you contribute a with your hangout thread. But the fact that the person was a tabletop regular says that the 'arena community' isn't really at fault for that, and that itd be hard to label the community at all as there is so much overlap.

I actually know a few people who partake in RPs from Free AND Advanced.
Also, if the conversation was ever about Off Topic I would’ve said the same line of things I’ve said about Arena just the same. As a rule Off Topic and Spam forums are always going to be abrasive and awful by general standards— it’s in their framework and has been since pretty much the turn of the century.

Spam I can agree with you on, off-topic not so much, I think that saying Off-Topic is 'awful' by general standars is pretty cynical. We can have expectations and for the most part Off-topic has been mainly chat/hangout threads like this one here we people just talk about their day/lives or discuss upcoming games or movies or whatever. The recent string of political stuff has been largely influenced by the circus of a US election. Which has understandably ramped up the disuputes. But off-topic by its definition cant just be discareded as 'awful' surely if it was neither one of us would be here.
I hate when people snark or look down on porn or hentai, like dont pretend you dont fap to it like anyone else.
Again, off topic is irrelevant.

No it isnt, it has its own community, the fact they visit other sections doesn't negate that.
@Dynamo Frokane
I'm not planning on getting involved in any sort of debate concerning the arena forum, but all I'll say is that the unsavoury individual who provoked me there was not what you would likely consider one of your "regulars"; in fact I believe this person likely disdains most of the things that the arena forum stands for and only got involved in the thread in question due to it implementing D&D mechanics; something which I viewed as a bad idea for a convincing piece of writing, whether it be role-playing or novelization. I had no intention of getting involved and only posted my input there because the GM wanted it.

Well I realise that I wasn't clear when I was defending the arena that of course there are abrasivie individuals on there, I've never had an argument there myself, but Its very likely they do happen. I was more responding to the idea, that the 'toxicity' & 'antagonistic' behavior in the guild was in higher concentration there, then anywhere else. I'm sure there are abrasive people in arena but I dont think there are significantly more in the arena then say, off-topic, casual, or even Tabletop which I heard can get quite finicky over mechanics and such.

@Gowi Well then it can only be said that it is subjective. Antagonism and Toxicity manifest as different things for different people. But I've not seen anything in Arena that I haven't seen anywhere else in RPG. Furthermore starting out in the arena doesn't nessecarily imply bias as I spend more time in Causal and Advanced since joining and I probably enjoy traditional RPs more than combat ones these days.

I know all of the Arena mainstays, Rilla, Melonhead, Importantnobody, Doc Doctor etc, and I rarely if ever see them on Off-Topic, off-topic clearly has its own community, but obviously there is overlap, as somepeople from off-topic are also seen in general, 1x1, nation etc.

Also 'elitism' doesnt just apply to roleplay, there is a degree of political and social elitism in Off-Topic simply due to the subject matter.

Maybe I came across to glowing in my defense of Arena, I'm not saying there arent bad apples or arguments in that community, but I would fight you on the claim that there is more of that there, then anywhere else on the guild. Particularly here in Off-topic.
The Arena section in every site I've been to, not just RPG's personal one, have always been awful by my perspective and definition. I haven’t really read the debate myself between you and BrokenPromise so I cannot give you an opinion on that individual exchange. I just try to keep away from Arena as a rule— and this has made me tagged as an “elitist” (when I am anything but) by some users on the site— because it is often very hostile and antagonistic generally but I imagine given its competitive and dick-waving standards that comes with the territory.

I'd have to disagree, while arena has its problems, mainly from the fact that it has a very small user base. The community on there are no worse then just RP communities in general. I dont know all the details of this dispute. But I've seen more bias and elitism in Off-Topic, Chatroom and Casual Rps then in Arena. I started out in RPG purely as an arena player, and everyone there was always very mature and sociable.

I realise just by disagreeing with you I'm putting my own reputation on the line, but I dont think that antagonism label is justified.
