I guess my comfort zone is "eccentric side character."

Hmmmmm, what should Richard get up to now. I toyed with having him run across @Nightknight's rangers on his way back to the fight proper seeing as he slipped so for from the front lines while fighting Darquesse. What do you think? Want to have a fight with 3 or so comparatively small mechs?

On the other hand I also have this extremely wicked idea involving getting his hands on some resistance beacons to teleport bombs into the their base.

One would be involving another person, which normally I'd pick in a heartbeat as the superior option, but the other idea is just so wicked and horrible and Richard.

I might have missed it, has anyone established how many people stayed behind to guard those dropships? I can't imagine it's many seeing as people don't necessarily need them to escape to home base.

Richard nodded along as the woman explained her situation and why she had decided to throw herself into a battle she had nothing to do with, then threw his head back and laughed. "Mwuhahahahahahah, that was how my first day went too. Richard Hawk, damn glad to meet ya Darquesse."

With that he hopped back down into his cockpit and started up a system check to see what was still working and what had been busted to hell by Darquesse's assault. "Feel free to go as crazy as you want out there. Anyone heading toward that cliff over there needs to be smeared across the desert. Don't sweat over whether you're shooting us or them, we don't have a uniform so everyone's done it sometime."

Everything was checking out pretty fine on the diagnostic. Joint damage, but that was to be expected. The right hand was especially bad from that wind she'd hit it with. His reaction time would suffer for it. The latches and racks in the pods were broken from where she'd pulled them open and wrenched the weapons away, rendering them effectively just a really cumbersome backpack for carrying ammo. He was worried that it might be the same deal for the cockpit, but was relived to find that it could still close. Satisfied he searched around in the cockpit and threw what looked like a bead up to her.

"Com device. It will also mark you as friendly to any of our boys that aren't Luddites. If by some miracle we have to pull out of here find somebody quickity split and tell them you've lost your return beacon, they'll know what you mean. And if they don't want to take you, force them. They deserve it for being selfish."

Richard grinned back up at her from his prone position. His tie hung loose around his neck, his white undershirt was stained with sweat from the short but intense fight, his hair was still immaculate without a single strand out of place, and he was smiling like a madman. "This old thing? 100% designed in the U.S.A. especially for little old me, but I'm sure Science Team made their modification when they put it back together. Guys are like activists, they're always trying to slip something in when you're not looking."

Richard flipped a switch and the cockpit opened up proper. He took a deep breath of air, really savoring the flavor of it, before rising out of it to face her eye to eye. "But I love those sweet little bugs." He continued, adjusting his tie. "They perform science like nobodies business. They could build something ten, fifty, a hundreds times better than this piece of junk."

Richard let the implication hang in the air for a moment before smashing it. "That's a bribe. I'm bribing you. Ditch the losers that you work with and join up with the Reign of Chaos. You'd fit right in with that sunny disposition of yours, and you'd probably be running the place after a while. There are tons of signing bonuses, but when they tried explaining them all to me I got so bored I took a nap."

Richard extended his hand to her while fiddling with a pin on . "And if you're not interested, at least give me a name I can carry with me to Hell."

or just retreat. Remember this is a starting battle, and the RoC needs to lose this so that skirmishes can happen, as I think a vast majority of the resistance is attacking.

Oh, I didn't think grunts got those beacons too.

So I just use that and a terminal pops out of the ground? What do those look like?
I am a dead man.
@thewizardguy
Richard hadn't even landed yet when the round slammed into the chest of his mobile armor, shaking the entire suit. There was a fist sized dent where the thing had impacted and warnings sounded off about the significant damage he'd just taken to the chest area. He landed back on the sand, dragging two long grooves as he slid backwards. Inside Richard considered his options.

It was unpalatable, but he flipped on his emergency beacon and opened up his coms.

"This is a message from Richard Hawk." He started, sounding nothing like a man that was looking death in the face. "I'm was having this lovely blind date over in sector....4, but my dance partner turned out to be much too aggressive for my tastes. It would be FANTASTIC if someone could swing by and take her off my hands because I don't think I'm making it to first base with this one."

Hopefully someone was coming with a bailout, now all he had to do was live long enough to enjoy it. The pods opened again and he swapped back to his rifle for the multimissiles. "LETS KEEP DANCING!" He shouted, pointing the weapon up and firing wildly into the air. The missile shot up, then came back down indiscriminately around them. The explosions threw massive amounts of sand and smoke into the air, obscuring the view of the battlefield. Then Richard moved somewhere within the obscuring cloud.

He could still track her with the mobile armors radar, hopefully she would have trouble finding him. And if she did, well, the railgun had at least made her stop.
Hey guys, Hellsing Abridged Episode 6 came out.

Good god, as if they didn't have enough accents they went and added some more.

Richards couldn't help but watch in fascination as this woman knitted herself back together. He'd heard of people like this, but this was his first time seeing this sort of fundamental unfairness in person. She looked, for a second, that she was going to go for the babyface that had stopped to yell at her and maybe save Richard a whole lot of headache. The boy streaked off toward the base though, and left him alone with this...this...

The woman turned back to him, and the look in her eyes confirmed it. This absolute maniac. Richard could recognize his own. He started to fire again, but the woman began to circle him. Every few moments she would move into his view again, only to disappear around the side before he could draw a bead on her. Then she started to attack, something dark slamming him from the side. He fired a boost in the opposite direction to keep himself for tumbling over, then backwards to dodge another coming from a different angle. She passed in front of him again. He boosted in another direction to dodge another darkness attack, and another, and another. She passed in front again, and he boosted again to get away from another darkness attack. Faster and faster he dodged, caught up in this deadly rhythm. Trapped in this circle she'd created he'd eventually run out of boost and be pulverized to death.

It was exhilarating.

She passed in front of him again. Richard dodge again. Twice more. She passed in front of him again. Her speed was constant. She fired these attacks off on the move, so she was in another place by the time it reached Richard and forced him to dodge. If her speed was constant than the distance she moved after she fired off a attack was also constant. Richard constructed a mental image of the desert around him. His pods opened up, swapped out his miniguns for a rail gun and an anti mech rifle, and he waited for the next attack.

He didn't have to wait long. He dodged again, critically low on boost now. If he had to do it anymore like this it would start cutting into his main power supply. Now, in the time it had been since he last attack and compensating for the direction he'd dodged in she should be riiiiiiight...

He pointed the rifle over his shoulder and fired, the immense recoil spinning him around as he brought up the rail gun to bear. The magnetic coils sprung to life with a crackle as he he spun to level it right where she would be in in just about NOW!

He fired, letting his own maniac laugh echo out for all the world to hear.
@Gentlemanvaultboy By meteor, were you referring to Alexandria's drop pod?

No, you're fine. I was referring to Darquesse.
@thewizardguy
Richard was peeved.

As he shot toward enemy landing zone something black streaked right past him before he could react. That stung, but not so much as cresting a dune to find he wasn't the first mech to charge forward heroically. There was already someone mixing it up down there and while Richard loved that sort of gumption he'd really wanted to be first.

Neither of those stung as much, however, as the wave of heat that rolled across the sand at his back. Richard watched in disappointment as his winter wonderland vanished in a wave of steam and heard the rallying cry of that rat bastard thunder stealing Licht Gruppe! Richard considered his personal situation and found it to be the worst. He wasn't the first man in, and neither was he the one leading a rallying charge into the enemy encampment. He the middle child of a whole war.

And then there's the meteor.

Richard quickly redirected his boost, shooting to the side as something man sized and burning came screaming out of the sky. It came within inches of him, close enough for Richard to spot the shadow of some kind of person in there amid all that fire. He swung to follow it, bringing up one of his chainguns and opening fire as it passed. If god saw fit to deliver upon him an object upon which to vent this frustration he was feeling so be it. He'd make sure, whatever this was, it was good and dead.
