The familiar beeping of machinery and the smell of antiseptic filled the air of Yukimura's hospital room as the sickly-looking young man in question lay in bed with the most bored expression on his face. His appointment a few minutes earlier had gone swimmingly, though as usual he was required to stay for an hour or two just in case of negative reactions to his treatments and other such things. He took his gaze off the TV playing a news report about a certain VRMMO game and glanced to the very bland-looking clock.

'T-minus 5 minutes 23 seconds until S.A.O. launch...'

The tension was practically killing him. As one of the 1000 <<Beta Testers>>, Yukimura had already gotten a taste of the vast, beautiful world of Sword Art Online. And, of course, learned his fair share of tricks. Fortunately he'd brought the NerveGear with him in his school bag... Wouldn't want to be left out of all the fun, after all.

'T-minus 2 minutes 12 seconds.'

Yukimura reached for his bag and removed the helmet before beginning the necessary preparations. The doctors wouldn't mind, and besides, his body would be rendered inert, so if they did need to do surgery and stuff, he'd be fine. He'd done it before, no big deal really.

'T-minus 10 seconds.'

Mentally ticking off the seconds, Yukimura placed the helmet upon his head and grinned. Sure, the devs usually changed things up after beta, but there was one fact that he knew for sure: this was going to be awesome.

Starting City and its surrounding areas were grand as ever. He moved his avatar's limbs to reorient himself. Even if they had the same body, the whole process was a tad disorienting. His avatar looked equally like and unlike himself at the same time. He was the same height and body type to improve compatibility (okay, so maybe he had added some more bulk here and there, but nobody could blame him for a bit of wish fulfillment), but the aesthetic appearance was quite different. Different and longer hairstyle, different eye color, so on so forth.

First item on the list: Level grinding. If you wanted to get anything done, you needed numbers, and to get numbers, you needed numbers. Specifically a different sort of number entirely, whether it be from equipment or levels. Killing off boars and wolves was fine, but the good stuff was in the outlying villages. Besides, the nearby areas would be hunted dry by the <<Newbies>>, so getting a head-start on the better areas would be necessary. He'd received a level up or two, and had been at the task for the past... ...What time was it?

"Hmm... Maybe I should check back at how I'm doing," the white-haired swordsman mumbled, sifting through his menu after seeing the time. "...What." It seemed that there was a distinct lack of a 'Log Off' button where it was supposed to be. "...Bug?" A bug wouldn't be unexpected, as it was day one and all, but the lack of a log off was probably something on the start of the list of 'shit to be fixed'.

"...Doctors won't mind, probably," Yukimura shrugged before unsheathing his blade and staring threateningly at a nearby beast, "More fun for me, at least."

Mmm... Since I'm playing the Beater, how many skills do I get? Y'know, since starting players get two and you get another skill slot every 10 levels.

Also, if anybody wants to know, I used this as my stat description basis:

Clicky

STR - How much damage you inflict normally, and how good you are at carrying stuff.
DEX - Reflexes and attacking speed.
SPD - How fast you are, natch.
DEF - How good you are at taking hits with and without armor. Also influences armor defense capabilities.
END - How many hits you can take before you go kaput. Obviously influences HP.
INT - Tamed Beast and Sword Skill damage, as well as increases to the effectiveness of General Skills.

If anyone has fixes/wants to debate/etc. then go ahead and say it. CS'll be up later.

Skills:
Battle Healing - Recover low amounts of HP over time during battle. It can be leveled up by constantly getting one's HP into the red zone.
Sprint - This skill is both an activatable burst of speed, and a passive increase in the player's effectiveness at dodging strikes.
Parry - The ability to use an attack to block an opposing strike. Maximum level makes it possible to destroy an item currently at less than half of the maximum durability; anything with a durability above that will not be damaged.
Medicine Mixing - The effectiveness with which a player can craft potions and poison weapons.
Detection - A sixth sense, allowing the player to notice enemies and secrets from a distance. Greater mastery allows detection of monsters in <<Hiding>> status and primitive booby traps, such as snares and pitfalls.
Personality: Overall, Yukimura could be considered a decent young man, if a bit abrasive. Though he's often called blunt and overly-direct, but it's mostly due to the fact that he absolutely hates unnecessary wastes of time like beating around the bush or excessive pleasantries. He's usually good-natured, and thinks that there's no good reason to be impolite without provocation. He's very patient in the 'can deal with shenanigans'-sense, and does his best to understand and get along with others. Provided that they're not, say, trying to murder green players or anything like that. However, he often lashes out when he can't comprehend somebody's behavior.

Yukimura is fearless and always puts others before himself, even after learning about the death game. Unfortunately, this isn't at all because he's a good person. His absolute devotion to his warped values could be considered very fatalistic individual at best, and could be considered downright suicidal at worst. He always ruthlessly prioritizes the needs of other people because he believes that, because of his inevitable fate, his life's not nearly worth as much as other humans'. As such, he can't understand the idea of someone else allowing themselves to be hurt for his sake, and often makes jokes at his own expense.

On an off-note, he really doesn't like his embarrassing name and does a lot of mental complaining. Hey, just because he's willing to do a few favors, doesn't mean he has to like cleaning out your toilet.
Short Bio: Yukimura is a Beater hailing from Japan. He's a rather average Japanese young man on all accounts, except for his hair color and the fact that he's slowly dying from a heart disease that's currently untreatable with today's medicine. It has yet to leave him permanently hospital-ridden, though it's been projected that he'll only be able to live up to somewhere in his 40's. As he's been in and out of the hospital his entire life, Yuki had picked up gaming as his pastime of choice. Surprisingly enough, he was very naturally talented at the art and, when combined with his absurdly large loads of free time, refined that talent to his utmost limits.

Yukimura competed in many gaming tournaments, and soon became known to many gamers under the username 'Ikusaba'. Prior to the launch of Sword Art's closed beta, he participated in a RTS gaming tournament in which the first prize was a guaranteed slot as a tester. Naturally he was the winner of the aforementioned tournament, and got his spot. Finally, summer passes, and the game is officially launched. Unfortunately, what was to be cause for celebration soon became something much worse...

I put a lot more work into that than I expected, TBH. Still don't know if I get extra stat points or skill slots for being the Beater, so I just defaulted.

"I was almost out of minutes anyway," Kiri mumbled as he received a text and immediately snapped his phone into two. It was a cheap, durable thing rather than one of those fancy yet fragile smartphones and such, so he could replace it fairly easy. Not that he wanted to. Damn thing was annoying, wasted money, and was barely used anyway. "Good riddance."

Peeking through the crowd watching the events unfold, Kiri noted that his partner had managed to find a way to deal with her little situation. Seems all caps definitely wasn't needed. It was three Kishin Eggs for Christ's sake. Sure they had their tricks, but any Meister worth their salt could finish 'em off. Thus, he watched patiently.

Alright, I'll probably make something up for Intelligence... Probably something dealing with the Sword Skills (Usage per battle like MP? Damage? IDK. )

At worst I'll just ignore it and make it a dump stat. *shrug*

Also IIRC, SAO only has two stats you could increase (AGI and STR). What exactly do the new stats do? Specifically DEX and INT since the rest are pretty self-explanatory.

Oh, and what's the cap on skills?

Kiri looked down to his vibrating phone. Always on vibrate - dinging and making all these noises just rubbed him the wrong way. Anyway, it was a text message. Something about a major emergency. Major was in all caps, which seemed to convey that it was 'super major' and not just some minimal, insignificant level of 'major'. How annoying.

"Something 'all-caps-major' is going down at the steps... I wonder if someone fell down and broke some bones - that would be funny," Kiri joked (hopefully), "Anyway, kids are leaving for classes 'n' junk. Might be a some kinda minor safety hazard if one of those Witches grew a pair and decided to go derp charging."

He sighed loudly. "Well, looks I'm heading out," Kiri declared, "Evidently it seems my Meister can't take care of herself. How troublesome..."
