Current Pirates, monsters, magic, islands and no civilization to steal from. Hmm.

Now, what happens when you have a bunch of monsters that were living in a forest and they get transmigrated into a futuristic urban setting?

I know that few, if any, people on this site would be interested in it... but... I just got an idea for a SAO/GGO/XCOM/UFO crossover... fun tingles...

Life has never given mankind sufficient time... nor sleep... nor comprehension. If it had, we would have stopped trying.

The Cleansing: Vigil's End

This is an idea for an action focused roleplay where the players will face NPC undead and monsters in a ruined city. It would include elements of survival horror as well as military but will be solidly fantasy throughout. The opposing forces will be under GM or Co-GM control to make things interesting. However, there will be allied NPCs that are under GM or Co-GM control to make sure things don't get too ridiculous. We intend this to be a fairly fast paced roleplay with shorter posts on average due to the amount of combat that will be involved.

The basic concept for this idea began with the history of a place. This place is a large island with a commanding, circular mountain range, and is broken up into eight city-states. One was in the center, surrounded by mountains and seven other city-states that each controlled a mountain pass into the central city-state's territory. It was often and repeatedly invaded because of its strategic value for both military and trade enterprises.

Here is a visual reference for the valley. fav.me/d9i4vzx
It is not to scale but shows the rough defense pattern of the city's fortifications. There is a kilometer between each wall and the next. Each wall has guard towers and gates. However, these have fallen into disrepair and there are many places where parts of the walls have sunk into the marsh or fallen down. The city itself is full of palaces and towers, many visible from a great distance and still standing.

With the numbers of their people falling due to repeat warfare and destruction of harvest after harvest the leaders resorted to the widespread application of a forbidden art of enchantment called necromancy along with an enormous reliance on enchanted equipment and conjured beasts.

Over time, with conjuration and necromantic enchantment on the front-lines of battle, the incidents of interrupted spells and disrupted Magic Circles became more and more common. Eventually, the combination of broken spells and massive overlapping enchantments broke a portion of the spells that kept everything in proper order. This caused a rapid chain of events that resulted in the annihilation of the population and created the world's largest and least explored ruin.

This unlooted city is a ripe prize for the ambitious but it is also more heavily defended than any fortress. The undead and many conjured beasts lurk in this place. Still, it would not be so difficult to cleanse if not for one critical thing. The dead remember how to fight like they did in life. So, after a century of peace between the city-states and a number of ill-fated crusades and raids, the palaces of the Ruin remain unspoiled by looters.

Players will be thrust into the action and up against tall odds. In fact, there will be three GMs in charge of managing this rpg's numerous aspects so that the players have less to worry about and can concentrate on winning. (@Haeo,@Zelosse, and @Sif) Players are allowed most races with a few exceptions. Neither divine nor diabolical races are allowed, neither are undead or great terrors like dragons, elementals, or greater mythic beasts. However, you could be a hybrid between elf/halfling/gnome/goblin/fox-girl/human/pidgeon-shapeshifter. That is... if you wanted to be that.

Some notes on magic: Because it's everywhere we need to have some limits and terminology can be confusing if people aren't on the same page.

-Item Magic: Rods with one specific spell engraved into them or staves with up to about five spells engraved are solid examples. There is no limit to the number of times such a thing can be used but the spell cannot be modified. The power of the cast is dependant on the power of the spell as inscribed. Craftsmanship dictates spell power, not the caster.
-Enchanted equipment is fairly common, though it still isn't cheap. It requires no consumable materials but does require an established Enchanting Forge, basically a small room with a bunch of Magic Circles carved into every surface.
-Storing a single-use spell in a gem or crystal does not require an Enchanting Forge.
-Non-humans are either magically null, having no ability to even activate item magic, or wield Natural Magic. That is, magic that is not completely tool dependent.

Utu-ja just kept polishing his dagger while the other scouts arrived and Farid farted out his usual breath of human wisdom. The attitude was normal from him. It wasn't that bad, compared to some other humans. At least he kept it to words. The misshapen argonian had long since established his value to Daelin. The opinions of his peers didn't matter so much. But, the air always seemed to sour whenever that mouth of his lolled open.

Keegan's arrival drew a sideways look from Utu but there wasn't much that was different from before. His eyes went back to the dagger. It was almost as polished as his skill could achieve. It would do. He put it in its sheath and turned an impassively reptilian expression on the rest of the assembled scouts and volunteers in time to spot the wildly rushing nord as he burst in.

A nord running through camp wasn't so uncommon, especially when Dumhuvud was in a mood. Though, this time the nord said something odd. Not many nords would say "potentially urgent". This nord must read a lot. People who read a lot used odd words sometimes.

Farid opened his mouth and Utu's nostrils twitched. Whenever he said anything it made everything smell worse. Well, it didn't matter much. People like him usually ended up smelling bad for awhile after thinking too little of something dangerous. At least the stink faded when only bones were left.

At least the rest of the things this running nord said were normal, and didn't make the air stink. But, it was a little silly. The camp wasn't large but there were many, many things that a person could get stuck doing for an hour or two. Running around like a startled rabbit after his friend didn't check-in for not even one hour didn't say good things about the nord's manhood. But, the worst part was that now they had a bard to look for on a scouting job. Bards made noise. It was what they did for a living. They could be quiet sometimes but it was usually on those rare occasions when they weren't drunk enough to snore. Never had Utu seen a bard who was both awake and quiet.

So, Daelin actually approved the search and promised results. At least they didn't have a handicap coming along from the start. It was just when he was entertaining that thought that Maduras bumbled in and proved that counting chickens was a fools pastime, hatched or not. That handicap was coming anyway. It just was painted ink-black instead of lily-white.

Utu took another pinch of the herbs. They didn't seem strong enough anymore.

Finally, Jorwen arrived and Daelin told Maduras his proper place in this job. It was time to get down to business. Utu answered Daelin's wave by standing silently and coming closer. The darkness of the hunt was waiting. He didn't have a strong adventuring spirit but the dark always felt more like home than the day. He would be more comfortable once everyone started trying to be quiet.
I would oppose your blossoming ego but I think that I'm going to be too busy for that particular war of attrition, @KabenSaal
This lack of information gives us some leeway. For example, the best weapons are likely similar to the best skills. They're unique. The next rank down probably have at least a few variations and low drop odds. That would mean that this skill would exclude the use of the top two ranks of weapon right off the bat. It could even be modified to exclude anything over a certain rarity.
So, it allows you to use any one handed weapon twice? Like, two Bumbiter swords?

It requires that every attribute of the two weapons be identical. Durability is the only exception. The moment you try to enhance or modify one to change an attribute then you can't dual-wield them anymore.

Dual-wielding is a Unique Skill. So, I don't think it'll be allowed. I liked the others though.

That one is a very grey area but because it excludes non-identical weapons it may be balanced enough. Basically, you can't have two named weapons. Kirito had two rare swords but they weren't identical. This skill is far inferior because it pretty much excludes every weapon that isn't either vender bought or common crafted. In a game like Diablo, this skill wouldn't even allow magic weapons because their attributes are random.
Speaking of the skills list. Here's a couple ideas for you to consider, @Zelosse.

Eye of a Thousand Nights: Allows a character to build homestead style cabins in any field area, thereby creating safe-zones. This does require materials. The criteria for unlocking this rare skill is that the player must spend 100 consecutive nights in a dungeon.

Titan's Hand: Allows a 2-hander to be wielded 1-handed. This allows shield use, not dual wielding. Requires maxed out strength attribute (circa 1000)

Twin Wield: allows two identical, unnamed, weapons to be dual wielded. Quest Reward.
Got it. It was a bit leathery though.@KabenSaal
I was waiting for a crafting comeback!@KabenSaal
