Lotus Squadron were back in the air doing a final sweep of the area before the naval operation could begin. They were tired after the major air battle they had fought just days prior, some of the debris still present on the ocean below. They knew they would probably be involved in the naval operation as well, but they still had to finish this sweep.

Everyone's Su-30MK2s had held up well over the last few days, with only minor glitches in the OPL code that could be corrected or bypassed mid-flight and the same was expected for the rest of the operation, but they were prepared in case bigger problems with the code popped up.

A small flight popped up on Tuân's IRST display, a pair of WZ-7 reconnaissance drones. Tuân expected that reinforcements would arrive once they shoot down the drones, but they couldn't leave the drones in the air. If Lotus left them up, they could locate the fleet and provide target coordinates for Chinese anti ship missiles. They had to shoot them down.

"Alright Lotus. We need to take out these drones. We leave them up and they can cause big problems for the fleet. Be ready for J-15s once they're shot down." Tuân said as his WSO attempted to obtain a weapons grade radar lock, but the radar couldn't obtain it. "Well, can't get a radar lock. Lotus 2, 3 and 4 switch to IRST. Everyone else, you're on CAP duty. Keep your radars on. This might get spicy." Tuân said as he switched his weapons to his R-27ETs.

Based on intelligence reports, if weapons grade radar locks couldn't be obtained on the WZ-7, they would have to use one of two available Fox 2s, the R-27ET and the R-73. But because of the seeker onboard the R-27ET, the missile would have to get much closer to the WZ-7 to be able to track the drone compared to the R-73, but it's still better for stealth attacks considering the R-73s much shorter flight distance.

Tuân and Lotus 2 moved towards the WZ-7 to the north, attempting to get behind it without being detected, while 3 and 4 moved south to engage the second. The rest of Lotus Squadron knew the drill and assigned themselves to different sectors as needed. Lotus Squadron had such a large search range on their radars and IRST that they operate even without an AWACS, although AWACS was still superior, especially when they finally get around to enhancing an AWACS with OPL.

It took Tuân getting within 90km for to get a weapons grade IR lock on the WZ-7 because of the measures the Chinese took in reducing the IR signature, but OPL had an answer for that. "Lotus 1, Fox 2!" Tuân called over the radio as he launched the R-27ET. The missile would still need to get close to begin tracking the drone, but it would get there.

Shortly after, the same call for a Fox 2 being fired came from Lotus 3. Now it was just a waiting game for the missiles to hit. Luckily, the R-27ET's seeker was passive, so the drone and by extension wouldn't get an alert warning until impact. Eventually, Tuân's missile impacted the WZ-7 and dropped off the IRST display. "Lotus 1, target down." Tuân called over the radio.

Then a call came over the radio from Lotus 6. Four J-15s inbound from the north-east. Lotus 1 and 2 switched their radars on and started tracking the J-15s. Most of Lotus Squadron readied their RVV-AEs, enhanced with OPL to have a more comparable range to the SD variant. As the J-15s grew closer, they unwittingly moved within range of a weapons grade lock from a beam aspect. "Lotus 1, Fox 3!" Tuân said shortly after launching an RVV-AE. Lotus 2, 5 and 6 followed suit with their own Fox 3s.

A call shortly came over the radio that Lotus 3's Fox 2 had hit the remaining WZ-7. Now all that was left was to handle the support. Luckily, OPL allowed the active radar on board the RVV-AE to activate sooner, meaning Lotus didn't need to maintain the lock for very long. After half a minute, the missiles began guiding themselves, but there was a problem. The OPL stealth shielding provided by the OPL had failed on two of the RVV-AEs, alerting the J-15s to the incoming missiles. The two began attempting to evade and popping chaff everywhere in an attempt to shake off the missiles. The other two also begun to evade, but didn't pop as much chaff. The missiles were more resistant to chaff, but not completely immune. One of the missiles hit and took down its intended target, but the other one didn't.

Lotus 1's missile hit the J-15 and the resulting explosion ripped off one of the wings, causing it to fall out of the sky, hurtling towards the ocean below. "Lotus 1, target down." Tuân confirmed over the radio. Lotus 2's missile however didn't hit, as the J-15 had managed to do enough to evade the missile. There were still two J-15s left and that's if they didn't call for reinforcements.

Tuân and Lotus 2 had already begun to close in on the remaining J-15s, with Lotus 3 and 4 coming in to support from the south. Tuân got within range of his R-73s, obtained a lock and called "Lotus 1, Fox 2!" over the radio as he launched an R-73. Lotus 2 followed up with his own R-73.

Despite both J-15s best efforts with both evasive maneuvers and flares, both missiles scored hits and destroyed both aircraft.

As Tuân flew over where the J-15s previously were, he saw the parachutes of the Chinese pilots who had managed to eject. He knew they would be fine. After continuing to loiter over the area for about ten more minutes, no additional contacts popped up on radar.

"Alright, good work Lotus Squadron. RTB." Tuân said over the radio and Lotus left the AO.

Personality: Tuân is a rather idealistic person, both in creating ideas and also wanting things to be a certain way based on his values. He is fiercely loyal to his values and to those important to him. He is curious about other people and wants to understand them as well as help them reach their full potential. He is adaptable, flexible and accepting unless a value or someone important to him is threatened.

*Likes: Tuân likes listening to music, particularly rock, metal and blues. His father would play a lot of classic rock, heavy metal and blues at home and a lot of it stuck with Tuân.
Tuân likes marine wildlife, often observing any who got within eyeball range of the Vietnamese coast, or at least those he could see through a pair of binoculars.

*Dislikes: Tuân doesn't like lone wolves or people who put themselves before the unit when shit hits the fan. Tuân's strong sense of duty and loyalty compels him to do anything he has to for his unit, even if doing so puts his life at risk. Lone wolves don't have that sense of duty or loyalty and that is unacceptable to him.

Tuân doesn't like not being able to cook his own food. More often than not, the food that is made for him by the Air Force cooks he isn't entirely fond of, but has to eat it because there isn't anything else.

Fears: Tuân fears losing everyone he cares about to the war.

Bio: Tuân was born just outside of Saigon in 1982. He grew up going on fishing trips with his father and collecting aircraft models. His mother was a nurse. His grandfather was a pilot with the Royal Australian Air Force and flew CAC Sabres early on during Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War.

Tuân spent parts of his childhood at school in Australia because his family wanted him to get the best possible education. He stayed with his cousins while he was there. It was here that he learned to speak English. Whenever he was back at home in Vietnam, he would study animals and explore the Vietnamese jungles with his father. His mother worked as a nurse in Saigon.

Tuân did well in school, scoring good grades in science, maths and sports, but it wasn't all smooth sailing for him. While he did have friends in school, he did experience some bullying in Australia for being from a country that still eats water beetles and the typical anti-communist rhetoric, despite not even considering himself a communist. He believed there was some value to socialism and believed it could be applied to a democratic society.

It was while he was in Australia that he figured out that he wanted to be a pilot. He attended an air show with his cousins and the RAAF flew both Hornets and heritage aircraft, with even squadrons from the US Navy and the RAF also participating. He did debate with himself as to whether he should return to Vietnam and be conscripted into the VPAF or stay in Australia and fly for the RAAF since he could do that at this point having obtained dual citizenship. He inevitably chose to return to Vietnam, but remained in contact with some of the friends he made in Australia, some of whom had even enlisted in the RAAF.

Upon returning to Vietnam, he received his conscription documents in the post and and applied for the VPAF. He attended the Air Force Officer's College, beginning his flight training on the older Yak-52 trainer aircraft, before eventually progressing onto the L-39C jet trainer. Along with doing exceptionally in his flight training, he also achieved a degree in aeronautical engineering.

He was assigned to the 923rd Fighter-Bomber Regiment, flying the Su-30MK2. It would only be a few years before he would actually see combat when the Chinese invaded. He performed multiple strike and air superiority missions, performing admirably and even managing some successes despite the technological advancements that the Chinese aircraft had over Vietnam's older Soviet and Russian aircraft.

It was because of his test scores in college and his performance on missions validating those scores that his aircraft would receive special OPL enhancementsand he would pilot the aircraft alongside his co pilot. The aircraft was nicknamed "Cau Ma" or "Phantom Bridge" in English and the list of enhancements fall into three categories;

Category 1: Permanent Core System Enhancements. These enhancements are implemented via OPL Core String Integration. These are inherent, always-active baseline features achieved by permanently altering the aircraft's functional reality.

Avionics Suite Performance. OPL enhancements to the radar system, passive sensors, EW suite, processing and sensor fusion, core datalink and comms capability and cockpit data management make the avionics perform on par with Western systems as of 2022. The older Soviet radar functions with capabilities equivalent to modern Western AESA radar systems, the EW functions with capabilities equivalent to Western standards like the Praetorian and the SPECTRA, processing and sensors use more advanced fusion architecture comparable to Western 4.5+/early 5th generation aircraft, core datalink and comms compatibility enhanced to be inherently capable of processing and understanding key NATO standards like Link 16 data structure and Mode 5 IFF alongside native protocols.

Engine Performance and Signature Enhancements. OPL enhancements to thrust output, thrust efficiency, fuel efficiency and IR signature allow the Phantom Bridge to go further and faster before being detected on IR sensors.

Fuel System Enhancement. OPL enhancements have increased the fuel capacity without increasing the weight that is usually associated with such a modification.

Maneuverability Enhancement. OPL enhancements have integrated an advanced 3D TVC, further enhancing the supermaneuverability.

Signature Management Enhancement. OPL enhancements have reduced the aircraft's radar cross section, making it appear significantly smaller on enemy radar systems than its physical shape suggests.

Airframe Enhancements. OPL enhancements allow the airframe to handle increased G Force loads, allowing the pilot to take full advantage of the enhanced engine thrust and TVC for extreme maneuvers. It also increases overall durability and fatigue resistance.

Category 2: Modular Interoperability Enhancements. These enhancements are implemented via optimised and modular OPL packages. Activated as needed via the OPL Adaptation Module for specific tasks.

Western Weapon Compatibility. OPL enhancements allow the Su-30MK2 to carry and deploy specific Western by activating dedicated and efficient OPL interface packages.

Specific Protocol Interfacing. OPL enhancements allow the Su-30MK2 to use non-native communication or datalink protocols by activating specific OPL compatibility packages.

Category 3: State-based Role Capabilities. These enhancements are implemented via state-based OPL reality. Activated by the pilot switching the aircraft's OPL-defined operational state.

"Carrier Mode". This OPL enhancement is a selectable state that instantly applies OPL facts for routine carrier operations. The facts include carrier rated landing gear, functional CATOBAR interface reality (hook and launch) and functional wing folding reality.

"Land Mode": This is the default state where Carrier Mode OPL facts are inactive.

After having these enhancements made to his aircraft, he was reassigned to 930th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, otherwise known as "Lotus Squadron", and promoted to Đại úy so that he could effectively lead the squadron if called upon.

*Current Goal: To defend Vietnam and her allies from China, Russia and North Korea.

Military or Civilian Rank: Đại úy (Captain)
Griffin smirked at Calico's comment about the French woman. He knew the food would be good enough for him if she hated it. "That's because they don't offer complimentary baguettes with every meal or three course meals with snails as the starter. They make actual food that everyone else eats." Griffin said, half jokingly. When it came to cheese, then French knew what they were doing. Unfortunately that didn't extend to the rest of French food.

He finally got to the mess and noticed it didn't look much different to the mess back home from his RAF training days. "It's just like home this." Griffin said shortly before Calico ran off to the coffee machines.

He took another swig of his Monster before heading over to the kitchen. He asked about the fry up and the navy strength coffee for later. The cooks actually rejoiced at being at asked proper food for a change and agreed to do him a quick fry up. They would even prep a navy strength coffee before the next op for him. The cooks even mentioned how horrid the French woman's coffee was, so Griffin made a mental note to steer clear of it.
Griffin looked at the Singaporean woman and reached out his hand to shake hers in kind. At the mention of breakfast, his stomach growled. "I haven't eaten since yesterday morning. Long flight. A proper fry up will sort me right out. I'll follow you." Griffin said as he held the door open for Calico and Jefe.

He hoped the mess had everything for a proper fry up. Sausages, bacon, eggs sunny side down, beans, hash browns, mushrooms with a bit of toast on the side was how he had it. He'll ask about a navy strength coffee once he was there and then rush in before he would be needed for the briefing.

The thought of a fry up and proper coffee reminded him of home. He was a lot closer to home in Malta compared to the Bahamas, if it wasn't for the heat. At least he could vent cool air into his Tonka while he was airborne, so he would be alright. With Circuit being Canadian, she would probably appreciate the cool air as well. This amount of heat should be criminal.

@Finetales @Smike
Griffin looked at the can of Monster in his hand and took another swig. "If it's navy strength, brilliant. If not, it won't do nothing for me." Griffin said to the French woman as he stepped further inside the room. He'd certainly seen worse for briefing rooms, having done briefings in muddy fields back home. His days in the RAF College had its ups and downs.

Griffin didn't know how he would handle the heat in Malta. He had considered filling his flight gear and clothes with ice packs, but he figured that might be too much. Problem is, he only wore dark clothes, so he might have to forget about wearing hoodies for a while. At least he'd brought his aviators so that he doesn't get blinded every morning.

Griffin remembered that there would be his first mission soon, hopefully a couple of days away so he could get some rest, but he was still curious as to what it was. "I was told we'd be going wheels up again in a few days. What's the job?" Griffin said as he took another swig of his Monster.

Tuán and Lotus Squadron were coming in to land at the Villamor Air Base in Manila after another successful mission. All they knew was that another mission was lined up for them already, but not what it was. They had to land in the Phillipines to find out.

Tuân never expected to have command over a squadron, but now he did. But commanding a squadron came with responsibilities. He was responsible for everyone in his squadron, whether they liked it or not. He had to make sure they all came back safe from whatever shit hole Command sends them too.

Since Tuân was the first to take off, he would be the last to land. That's how he preferred it. He would lead them off the ground and follow them down when landing. It was procedure for the first to go up is the last to come down, so he made sure the squadron followed his lead.

One by one, his squadron members landed their aircraft before it was finally his turn. He lowered the landing gear and extended the flaps before lowering his Phantom Bridge down towards the runway and flared slightly, allowing the rear landing gear to touch down first before gently lowering the front gear to touch down. He then slowed down his aircraft to taxi speed and left the runway, leaving his aircraft parked on the flightline. He made sure to switch off the radar and render it safe before leaving the cockpit.

Before he could even get out of his flight gear, a Filipino officer called him over. Turned out he was needed at the academy to be briefed on his next mission. He was led to a vehicle just outside the barracks and watched as the driver leaned over and opened the front passenger side door and told him to get in.

After a ten minute drive, more officers greeted him at the door and led him to a conference room upstairs. He entered the room and noticed that no one was there. Before he could ask where everyone was, a bright blue light appeared on the other side of the room.

As he approached, the light formed a ring and began expanding. An image of a room with gray walls appeared in the centre of the ring, a lot like a room that would be found on a modern warship. He heard voices and what sounded like footsteps coming from the room. He heard someone call his name and rank and immediately looked around, thinking someone else had entered the conference room. He realised that whoever had called him was on the other side of the image.

"Are you in whatever this is?" Tuân said, not understanding what was going on. He was asked to step through by the voice inside. He turned to see the officer behind them nodding. He slowly stepped into the image and appeared in the gray room on the otherside.

He looked to his left and saw a Filipino admiral, much older than himself. "Admiral." Tuân said before saluting. The admiral returned the salute. Before Tuân could even ask, the admiral said that the portal would be explained shortly. Tuân nodded and joined the other pilots.
Griffin and Circuit had signed themselves in and been assigned to their rooms. Circuit was exhausted, having just finished her first long distance flight with only thirty minute rests every couple of hours. Griffin was also exhausted, but was in a better state than Circuit, so after getting themselves settled in, Circuit went to have some actual sleep while Griffin chose to introduce the pair of them to his new squadron leader in her absence. But first, he needed caffeine. It would keep him up long enough to do this and then he could crash.

Griffin looked around to see if there was a coffee machine or a vending machine. He managed to find both, but the coffee machine was broken, so he looked at the options in the vending machine. He saw the standard Red Bull and hoped that wouldn't be his only option. He looked lower down and found the original Monster, which was a lot better than anything Red Bull had to offer. He put his ID number into the machine, picked the Monster and watched as it dropped into the bottom of the machine. He reached in, grabbed the can and walked off towards the briefing room.

After taking a few swigs, he let himself into the briefing room and found two figures standing there looking over their tablets. "Erm, hey. I'm Griffin. Just reporting in. Circuit would be here as well but she's knackered."

Both Liam and Emily were on the tail end of a long flight, having flown all the way from the main base all the way to Malta, which had taken roughly ten hours with the two refueling points and navigating five different Flight Information Regions before finally approaching the airport. The flight had went flawless, with the Tonka handling the expanded ferry range exceptionally well.

Liam looked at his watch and knew they would be coming in to land at the airport in a few minutes. He figured that he'd better wake Emily up before they land otherwise they'll be asking him why his WSO is still asleep during the landing procedure. "Hey Circuit, Earth to Circuit. We're going to be landing in the next couple of minutes." Harry said before switching his radio to talk to Malta Tower.

"Malta Tower, this is Steel four-four, established ILS runway 32." Liam said over the radio. Malta Tower responded, giving him current wind direction and speed before telling Liam that he was cleared to land. "Cleared to land, runway 32, Steel four-four."

Harry lowered flaps and landing gear while gradually reducing throttle as the Tornado accurately tracked both the localiser and the glideslope until they reached the decision altitude. After confirming visual of the runway to Emily, he disabled the autopilot and guided the Tornado to the runway manually. Before touching the tarmac, he flared his Tonka slightly before touching down rear landing gear first before gently lowering the front landing gear onto the runway. He then slowed the Tornado down to taxi speed and left the runway, taxiing to Shattered Steel's flightline and parked it.

Liam made sure to turn the radar off and render it safe before leaving the cockpit. Maybe they would have a chance to get some shut-eye before they had to go back up.

Personality: Emily is a bit of a thrill seeker who brings an enthusiastic energy to the cockpit and is willing to indulge in calculated risks alongside Griffin. While initially nervous in the intensity of air to air combat, she is highly proficient with the Tornados advanced computer systems, providing crucial technical expertise and tactical insights. Over time, she grows a strong working relationship and friendship with Griffin, her enthusiasm often acting as a counterpoint to his calmer demeaner, although she can be a voice of caution when needed.

History: Emily was originally from Toronto, Canada. Before Heavenfall, she lived with her parents and had taken a large interest in computers in her early years. Toronto was relatively unscathed post-Heavenfall, being somewhat more inland despite being a coastal city. Emily eventually went to college and university, graduating with a degree in computer engineering. While she had an interest in aircraft, she never initially planned it as a career.

Despite Canada having recovered rather well post-Heavenfall, the job market, especially in the niche area of advanced aerospace applications of computer engineering, faced limitations. Seeking opportunities to utilise her skills with cutting edge technology, she expanded the scope of her search in the job market and stumbled across Shattered Steel.

Shattered Steel offered a unique chance to work directly with complex aviation systems that weren't readily available in Canada at the time. By 2014, she was a Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) with the company, having been recruited primarily for her technical expertise and subsequently trained for her role. She was assigned to Griffin's Tornado following her training.
