Then you got Phantasy Star where the twist is you're living on a massive spaceship as part of an exodus and everyone forgot and reverted into a quasi-medieval world.

Though the salary man might tilt this more to Shadow hearts which is fine. Anyway post your character and I'll look over it much like I need to for salary man because I went to sleep when this was posted.

There are two ways of doing it

The super fast and easy way would be for you to make a Hobby: puppets and then take weapon levels and maybe give the puppets some perks or just use your power moves for the puppets doing cool things.

However if you wanted to have it stats we can just do it like the example characters of Karis and her ro-bro; use the servant ability for the puppet and maybe have your puppet skill act as the attack roll

This is very much influenced by anime of which mecha is a considerably sized genre.
Panache and style is a pretty big thing considering the toy and model kit selling aspects that make the money for them.

So could we have distinctive custom machines so long as they aren't hax?

Can we be the pirate gang known as The Steely Dans on the yellow air-subship named Excelsior, that peacefully floats in the watey core of the great void. With customized mechs that have clear thematics in terms of looks and abiltiies?
