Ezekiel frowned while Demetri spoke as they walked. Demetri raised several good points, which didn’t make Zeke happy. He wanted his boyfriend safe. Away from this hellish nightmare, but Demi wanted to be by his side. The group approached Cassian, who was standing with two others. Zeke took Demi’s hand and squeezed it.
”I did promise not to leave you behind,” Zeke said. He smiled a little at Demetri, ignoring the god’s vow to follow Demetri wherever he went.
Movement caught Ezekiel’s eyes, and he looked over in time to see one of Cass’ buddies approach Demi and Zeke. ”Wha—.” Before Zeke even got a word out, he was kicked in the stomach and flung back. His back slammed into the wall, creating a whiplash scenario in his body. He dropped forward on the ground, landing on all fours and tried to catch his breath. Zeke wheezed in and out, struggling to gain air. Celestial bronze was no joke. Ezekiel’s bow materialized in his hand, and he pushed himself to his feet. ”Cassian, you have shitty taste in friends.”

The spell held, much to Annika’s relief. She started to shift form, but as she got further into the shift, she felt her hold on the other spell start to slip. Four large paws hit the ground with a muffled thud, and Annika shook herself out. Her silver coat remained muted thanks to the shadows, but Annika could hear the rumblings of her companions. The shadows were slipping on sound, but their physical presence was still hidden. Annika remained as close to her companions as possible to keep the shadows around them all, but she stalked forward to attack the nearest Green-Eyed Ones.

Annika managed to get a hold of some monsters, ripping them apart before the ground shook underneath her paws. Annika snarled, her lips pulling back over sharpened canines. She looked up at the sky and noticed it brighten as the shadows faded around her and her companions. Like the sun itself, a ball of light hurtled toward her and the demons. Annika quickly retreated, coming to stand beside Runa and Klara as the light hit the ground and vaporised all the Green-Eyed Ones. Annika sat back, curling her fluffy tail around her paws and looked from the destruction to Klara — who she was eye level with — before looking at Jack. Now what?

Guin managed to land a kick on Cortez, followed by a punch by Lance. Antoinette relaxed a little more, releasing the illusions she had created in time for penguins to pop up in front of her. Antoinette looked at the creatures curiously, wondering if she had unconsciously done that when Max spoke up. Antoinette snapped her head up at Max, blinking at his words. She looked back at the waddling penguins and smiled, even giggling a little.

Antoinette felt the stress of the chaotic moment and losing control of her powers ease from her mind and shoulders. Everyone here was fighting the same fight. They would all get through this. She could hug Max for this, but that would have to wait.

Cortez seemed restrained for now, which was good considering Mary's scenario. Guin quickly found Cortez’s sister and raced off, Neil and Perry close behind. Antoinette opted to stay and refocus on the task at hand. They needed to knock Cortez out somehow. Antoinette’s powers still sparked at her hands and crackled over her forearms. She didn’t want to push her mental abilities, but they needed to close in on him. Antoinette looked to Mary, the leader of their group. With the party split and numbers lower, they really needed to work as a team.

”What do you need us to do, Mary?” Antoinette monitored Cortez, ready to physically attack him if he made a move.

Ezekiel didn’t think things could get worse. Well, they still could. Nancy had gone robotic and was hell-bent on saving Mads, which made sense, but still frightened Zeke, and then there was Demetri with his everything is sunshine and rainbows attitude. Ezekiel slowly turned to look at Demetri, eyes widening. Nancy headed off with Joanie to find Cassian. They couldn’t get separated, but Demi was being dumb. Ezekiel grabbed onto Demi’s arm, bringing up the rear behind Janelle and Kristin as they followed Nancy.
”What the hell are you thinking?!” Ezekiel hissed at Demetri. ”This is your first damn quest, and now you want to go into Tartarus and save Nancy’s blood sister? Are you kidding me?! You can’t even make that decision anyway. It would be Nancy’s choice who she brought with her. Even if we could convince her to bring people with her.”

Annika felt a warmth spread through her from the cloak, and she shut her eyes as the vision filled her mine. The moon was familiar to her. It was the same moon from back home, and Annika sighed, relief flooding her face.

After releasing the cloak, Annika worked her magic. The shadows responded to her differently. It was nearly intoxicating to Annika. They had never responded fully and completely to her before. She lifted her hands, examining the shape of them while her eyes adjusted to the shadows. Sound evaded her as it did all of them. Annika looked to Grandmother Runa, but she was quickly aided, so Annika focused her efforts elsewhere.

Jack signalled to her, but the need was unnecessary. Klara was at Runa’s side and could guide the older woman’s movements if needed. Annika felt for Runa, but the need of the collective was greater than that of the individual. Instead, Annika looked at Jack, pointed to the group, and walked her fingers slowly forward towards the Green-Eyed monsters. She needed to get closer to them to help. Of course, if the group wanted to maintain their current positions, Annika would continue to aid in cloaking them. So far, the Green-Eyed Ones have remained unaware of their position.

The group quickly formulated a plan. Annika followed along as best she could, but she was distracted. She felt torn from abandoning Madelyn but also from her duty to her family. What if she never got back to them? What if so much time passed that they were all gone? How would she even get back to her time?

Annika looked down, feeling the velvet strangeness of the red cloak she bore. ”Am I doing the right thing?” she questioned the cloak. Her voice was quiet, barely above a whisper, but she thought the cloak may understand her.

Electricity filled the air around her and she heard the telltale signs of lightning strikes. Annika looked up to see the storm cloud Prudence created. Right, there was a battle going on. Annika sighed and released the cloak. She shut her eyes and thought of quiet things and shadowed things. She had used this strength often with her people. It helped them to sneak up on their enemies. Hopefully, it would help her friends here to remain undetected even though they were already in the heat of battle.

”Keep fighting! I am going to try and cloak us. Stay close.” Annika held her arms out, eyes still closed and called on the quiet things and shadows to make her companions moves and beings undetectable.

Ezekiel swallowed his fear when Nancy spoke. He hadn’t experienced trauma like she had, but Ezekiel knew what it was like to lose control. To lose a part of yourself, and he had a feeling this new Nancy was a result of that loss. He nodded to her and turned to face the rest of the group. The quest would continue, but Zeke wasn’t sure he would see Nancy again after that.
Zeke opened his mouth to suggest finding Cassian when Alexios spoke up. Ezekiel narrowed his eyes at the god. Sure, it was an idea, but it was reckless, and Zeke knew that was something Nancy would want to do. Who wouldn’t throw themselves through the gates of hell to save a loved one? Nancy had an unbreakable bond with Niah and Mads. Ezekiel wished Alexios hadn’t said anything.
Zeke looked at Demi, thoughts rolling around in Ezekiel’s head about what to do next. Janelle spoke up, offering up some helpful information. He had to agree. Her information would have been useless up until this point since they kept losing everyone.
”Okay, we just need to find Cassian, and then we can head down. Sunshine, do you know where the wayward demi-god went?” Ezekiel looked hopefully down at the orange cat. Up until now, Sunshine seemed to know where they needed to go and where the other demi-gods had gone when they ran off.

Antoinette breathed a sigh of relief when Jaclyn agreed to her plan. She crouched beside Jaclyn, ready to go on the offensive, but as she waited, something started to go wrong for Antoinette. Her eyes started to sparkle, and she panicked slightly before fireworks began to shoot off around her. Antoinette did her best to misfire her out-of-control powers to avoid hitting any of her companions. Antoinette was not a fan of having no control over her powers, but she knew remaining calm would be better than panicking and losing even more control. However, despite Anoinette’s best efforts, she couldn’t keep everyone safe.

As she started to lose more control, Antoinette’s fireworks veered off and hit Lance and Perry ”Watch out!” She cried too late. Antoinette watched in horror as both Lance and Perry were thrown back. They were covered in burns now as well.

Antoinette’s hands balled into fists in frustration. This wasn’t working. She put in her best effort to regain her control, but it still wasn’t good enough. Panicked, Antoinette scanned the room, looking for an exit. Maybe she would have a chance if she could remove herself from his line of sight. But they weren’t in a room; they were in a long corridor. Antoinette turned and faced Cortez. Fine. If he wanted to control her, she would just have to do her best to control what he saw. Luckily, at that moment, Guin was charging Cortez.

Antoinette's thoughts turned to Guin and her fighting patterns. She had been training with Guin for months. Antoinette knew how Guin moved; surely she could create the illusion of multiple Guins coming at him to confuse him. Right? Right! Antoinette created three other Guins, all charging Cortez in the same manner as the original Guin. Antoinette prayed Guin moved quickly, as Antoinette had no idea how long she could use two powers simultaneously. Curse Cortez and all he holds dear, Antoinette thought bitterly.

Runa’s answer was disappointing but unsurprising. Annika looked back at the red land around her and sighed. She had important work to finish back home. She didn’t know how much time had passed there, but regardless of whether it was seconds, days, or years, Annika knew she had to try to get back. She had to help her people by either fighting alongside them or avenging those she had lost.

Annika turned around, stepping closer to the portal, when Madalyne spoke up, declaring she would remain behind. Annika stopped and turned. She looked at Madalyne, the other person she had initially arrived with in this strange land, and felt a sudden need to offer the woman help.

Annika walked to Madalyne. ”I want to offer you help, should you need it. I have no blade to provide you with or use, but you have yours. Cut my hand so I may provide you with a piece of me to call on should you need it.” Annika extended her hand to Madalyne and waited.

Madalyne turned around to face Annika and smiled when she offered some aid if she ever needed it. ”Thank you for the offer. This might hurt a little bit.” She said as she took out her sword and took a small step back as she gently rested the blade against Annika’s hand and quickly made a light cut off of the palm of Annika’s hand.

With her hand-cut, Annika pulled two beads from her clothing and set them into her bloodied hand. She coated the beads in her blood, imbuing the objects with her essence. Annika knelt and buried one bead into Limbo's dirt before standing and handing Madalyne the other. ”Use this to call on me. My hope is that I will arrive at your side or this spot should you or the land need me. Tell Anayma I consider her tiatén:ro. A friend. As I consider you and Jack. I will see you again.” Annika smiled at Madalyne before she turned and joined the others in the Everdark.

Annika looked around the Everdark, catching the last of Jack’s words. This place was even more strange than Limbo. In place of red everywhere, it was dark everywhere, but there was almost a strange purple hue to everything. Annika walked forward tentatively, scenting the air like animals did. Creatures were abundant below them; from Jack’s words, they would be difficult to kill. Annika remained silent for now, ready to fight should the need arise. Whatever this place once, Annika found herself preferring Limbo to it.

It all happened quickly. Ezekiel had been leaning in, willing Nancy to look at him, to look at the light and feel something, anything other than the pain that she was in. She eventually looked at him, and once she did, all the sound snapped back, and Ezekiel was flung away from Nancy and the group.
The light disappeared from his hands, and he lay on the ground in a daze. People shuffled and moved around him, having been thrown back as well. Ezekiel sat up and rubbed his head, looking at the strangers around him until Demetri’s face flooded his vision. Are you alright? Zeke looked away from Demetri and down at his hands. This whole quest was so messed up, and Ezekiel didn’t know how to fix it. He couldn’t heal this one. He couldn’t make it better.
”No,” Zeke said. ”No, I am pretty far from alright.” Ezekiel stood, grabbing Demetri’s hand and pulling him up. Ezekiel looked from the group of people he had fought alongside, weighing his options. Zeke looked back at Demetri, searching the demi-god’s eyes for something, anything to tell himself that this would be alright. But Ezekiel knew enough about this world to know it wouldn’t be. For the first time since going on quests, Ezekiel wasn’t sure he would make it out of this one. At least in the other quests, for every fuck-up there were two steps towards victory.
Ezekiel raised a hand and cupped Demetri’s cheek. Zeke ran his thumb along Demetri’s smooth skin, and he tracked the pattern with his eyes. ”I hope you get to meet my mom one day. I think she’d like you,” Ezekiel said.
Zeke released Demetri’s face and looked back at Nancy. She had murder in her eyes, and the words he heard next made his blood run cold. Nancy was teaching Zeke Latin, but she must not have taught him the words she spoke because he didn’t understand her. Ezekiel pulled Demetri back to the group but kept his distance from Nancy. ”Nanc…What do you want to do?” He couldn’t tell her she had to keep going; not after all this. If Ezekiel had to let her go and move on with the rest of the group, he would. Of course, Ezekiel didn’t want to lose his best friend, but he couldn’t condemn the rest of the group to death. The six of them were sent for a reason. Two of them couldn’t defect and still expect to come out on top, and they were still missing Cassian.
