Penny’s backlash at Christian’s declaration was understandable. Truthfully, Christian had been berated worse than this before. However, he couldn’t help but grin when she addressed him as ‘Mister Reaper.’ How could a spirit be that positively adorable?

Shaking his head from the thought, Christian turned his head to see Penny’s body twitch, the last defiant acts of her body refusing to die. The vampires were starting to slow in their task, some of them moving off, bored now that their prey had no real fight left. As the obstructions cleared, Christian could see more of Penny’s battered body. She was riddled with fang marks, her skin nearly translucent from the blood loss. A cold calm washed over Christian, and he looked back at Penny.

”You want me to bring you back? In a den full of vampires, into a body weakened from blood loss? Do you have any idea what pain your body is in right now? Can you fight through that, Penny? The pain and the dizziness while also fending off vampires?”

Christian wasn’t sure where this sudden burst of emotion had come from. He often didn’t feel anger. This fear. What Penny was asking for was not so simple. He had to know she understood that, at least. His rules and regulations would matter nought to her, but the human understanding of pain and hopelessness might be enough to suspend her ludicrous idea of wanting to remain alive. And if it didn’t, then he would bring her back and find some way to get her out of the den without suffering further harm.
One moment, Annika was staring at Serena in awe as black wings seemed to form from nothing, and the next, she was watching a man fall from the sky on top of the girl. The pair of them crashed to the ground, groaning and moaning while onlookers gasped. In the distance, Annika could make out the first sounds of sirens.

She flipped her knife back and forth, shifting her stance into a more relaxed position, but Annika held her dagger with the blade resting up her forearm. Ready to slice forward if she needed to.

Jack’s words startled Annika, and she stared at him in bewilderment. ”You want me to practice on them?” Annika was more used to shadow targets or, at the very least, non-living targets.

She looked back at the father and daughter as they made their way back to their feet, throwing obscenities in their direction. Annika frowned. Her father had called them criminals. However, Annika wasn’t an enforcer of the law, but she could be a protector.

Thinking about her home and the shadows that brought her comfort, Annika shut her eyes and thought of something that would ensure their assailants remained quiet and immobile. After all, what was more stifling than the shadows?

Annika opened her eyes, a purple hue had taken over the normal brown colour, and she threw out her hand. Manacles clamped down on the wrists of Serena and Salem, pinning their hands behind their backs, while a band of shadows covered their mouths.

Annika dropped her hand, the purple in her eyes fading, but the manacles she brought forth solidified and held true while the shadows on their mouths tightened into black cloth.

The smile on Ezekiel's face seemed to glow as he walked through camp, his boyfriend's hand securely intertwined with his. After...making up, Ezekiel made sure the pair of them left the infirmary spotless. In hindsight, the infirmary probably wasn't the best place to rekindle, but well, Zeke didn't regret it.

"So, were you serious about movie night with Nancy?" Zeke asked as they walked towards the arena. Ezekiel was glad he told Nancy that they would meet up in an hour at the Big House to form a plan for the quest. The unexpected side quest he had taken with Demetri had taken up some time, but they still had fifteen minutes to gather everyone together. Zeke was hoping the majority of the group was at the arena.

As they neared, Ezekiel recognized a couple of faces training that they needed to talk to.

Antoinette smiled at the younger version of Mary, and remained kneeling while Mary addressed the others and explained what the three of them needed to accomplish. With a new portal opened and their team updated, Antoinette stood and followed the other two through the door.

Xavier's office looked the same as it always did, but it felt different. Antoinette looked around, taking in the new atmosphere and the people who crowded in around the desk. Antoinette was unfamiliar with the topic of conversation but she appreciated the nostalgia. At the mention of Pietro, Antoinette glanced at Guin to see if there was some recognition about the moment.

However, as pleasant as the trip down memory lane was, this Mary seemed more or less stable and not the one they needed to find. Antoinette moved about the room, looking for some sort of trap door or object that might represent another portal to open.

Sitting on one of Xavier's shelves rested an antique Webster Mantel clock. Often impassioned by antiques, Antoinette was drawn to the piece. The steady ticking of the minute hand was comforting while the hour hand slowly moved towards the next hour. Antoinette brushed her fingers across the top of the piece, but it remained dormant. However, the draw she had originally felt, didn't pass.

”I think this clock might be the key to unlocking another part of Mary's mind,” Antoinette said. The question was, how?
Annika understood her father's cryptic meeting but wasn't sure she could follow through. It wasn't often that she called on the shadows outside of The Everdark, and she was distantly aware of being watched from onlookers. For now, Annika bent one of her legs and threw Serena off her. Annika reached into her bag and pulled out a knife, a weapon she always carried on her person, and stood.

Annika stalked Serena, matching her strides and waited before striking out. Annika sliced her knife up, cutting across Serena's palms. The girl cried out before rushing Annika. Annika let Serena tackle her, and used the girl's momentum to flip her over before Annika scrambled back to her feet.

”Dad, we're drawing a crowd,” she warned her father, as she squared off against Serena once more.
The day was incredible so far. Jack's adventures were infamous and today's trip was no exception. Annika was bombarded with different sights, smells, and languages. She loved it all. Not only did she get to be a kid for some of it, going on rides in Disneyland and eating too much ice cream, but she also got to expand her knowledge about Earth and mutants, and Wakanda's science department.

As she walked down the streets of New York, she spoke to her father, waving her arms and hands animatedly while she recounted the day's events. She was excited to revisit some of the museums in New York, knowing there would be new exhibits to visit and books to buy. But that anticipation fell short when they came across an old acquaintance of Jack's.

Annika stood half a step behind her father, looking around him to size up the girl around her age, and eyeing the man who demanded retribution. Annika frowned at the altercation. Annika knew her father had a past, she even accompanied him on some of his less savoury adventures, but she also knew Jack did a lot of good. After all, she knew about the adventure that united the two of them. Jack didn't deserve this defamation, or an attack from a teenager over a pair of lost shoes.

Annika shifted quickly around her father. She launched herself at the girl, altering her attack, and Annika took the brunt of the girl's force. She felt her back hit the pavement at the same time claws dug into her skin. Annika grunted from the force and sharp pain but didn't cry out.
Christian winced, a crease forming between his brow due to Penny's out cry for his help. Strictly speaking, bringing people back to life was not a part of Christian's duties. It was forbidden.

”I am a reaper. I'm here to help you move on, cross over to the other side.” He glanced behind himself to see the frenzy of vampires surrounding the girl. A flash of memories Christian had accumulated over the years of watching Penny filled his mind. He turned his focus back to her spirit and sighed. ”I am not meant to bring you back. Your time has come, Penny,” he said, looking at her apologetically.

He hated this part of the job. The ones who had a difficult time accepting their fate were always the hardest.

As Zeke laid on the ground, his cheek pressed into the dirt, listening to his half-sister and boyfriend fight, he wondered how everything got so seriously fucked up. He had tried to diffuse the situation, to calm everyone down, but that wasn't a subset of power Ezekiel had. His father was the sun god after all, and his mother just ignored everyone's opinions—even though he knew it killed her inside. So really, Zeke was the last person who should have been trying. But he had to fix it. Right?

A wave of calm enveloped Ezekiel a moment later. He felt Nancy's power dissipate and sat up. Then the emotional exhaustion hit. Nancy had beat on Demi, and Demi had beat on Nancy. This day was chalking up to be the worst. Zeke wasn't mad at either of them, if anything, he was mad at himself, even when Demetri jumped to Ezekiel's defense. His entire body still felt flush from Demi's words and actions.

And then Zeke did something he never thought he would.

”Alexios is right. So is Kiera. We still have to work together to break down the doors of death and get Mads and Leda back… We can't be beating on each other. Let's just…walk away for a few hours.”

Ezekiel looked at Nancy and smiled. He appreciated her apology and understood very well that her and Demetri were not compatible people. Still, it was good for Nancy to say out loud. Perhaps now Demi would stop trying so hard to befriend her and they could just be civil instead. Zeke rather hated the two of them fighting in any capacity.

”I'll be in medical if you need my assistance later,” he told her and took a few steps in that direction before looking at Demetri. ”Or you.” He then nodded to Kiera and Sera, grateful for their interference, before walking away from the entire group.

”Take care, Amara.” Raúl bowed his head slightly, watching Amara walk away before he went back to the task at hand. He stayed with the investigative team until they gathered all the information they could from the street. The body was then collected and moved to the morgue downtown. However, Raúl didn't follow.

A few hours had passed since the investigation started and Raúl had yet to quench his thirst as it were. Thankfully, Chicago had a busy nightlife. Raúl managed to find his next drink easily.

Raúl prided himself on self-control. He only took a little blood here and there, compelling his creatures to forget before moving on. Of course, there was no way to keep from marking his meals, but he had been given a way to speed up the healing process. Not all witches were difficult to work with. Unfortunately, this time, Raúl's dinner plans were cut short.

A familiar scent that he had picked up at the crime scene caught his attention. He quickly compelled the woman he had been drinking from and sent her back before he stalked down the street. Whomever carried the scent moved with purpose, but they were not easy to track. They moved erratically, up one street and down another before doubling back through an alley. Raúl hadn't realized how many side streets there were in Chicago until that night. Eventually, he tracked the scent to a building that wasn't far from the crime scene.

Raúl watched the building from the shadows across the street. Perhaps the killer lived nearby. That was a common scenario for most human serial killers, but Raúl wasn't sure that ideology translated to the supernatural community as well.
