Dysphoria’s tendrils reached out and caressed Fin and Callaghan in a way that had him shuddering and leaning closer to the symbiont. ”Yes,” he moaned. ”Whatever you desire.” There was nothing he would not do for Finley and her Dys. Nothing he wouldn’t share. But it would be so much easier to share if he were in his other form. It would be so much easier to keep them safe, and he wanted to feel what it would be like to have Dysphoria run themselves over him in his dragonic form.

Cal shuddered again, but for a completely different reason. If anyone was watching, they would start to see his skin changing colours. The dim lighting reflected along his brown skin as it shifted to gold. Scales began to grow and multiple, his clothes dissolving into nothing. Cal scooped Finley into his bare arms and carted them away from the bar. His bloody lips found hers after he had bitten down on them, and he kissed her passionately as he set her down in a chair. Memories would flood into Finley and Dysphoria as he shared the island of his people. Visions of dragons of every shape and colour flew above a canopy of green and vivid azure blue. The sound of laughter and singing would fill their minds, accompanied by the stronger scent of sea and sunshine, before dissolving into a sea of stars.

The cool feeling of wind coming off the ocean flooded their joint minds, raising goosebumps on Cal’s skin. It was one of Cal’s more recent memories. It was a quiet night after this year's egg hatching ceremony had occurred. The first dragons born in a hundred years had been claimed. Already, they were learning the ways of being a dragon on Earth. Already, they were fighting for their life. For Cal’s breed was a dying breed unless they found viable mates for this world. Before humans, it was easy to thrive, but as the world’s population grew, so did the risk of survival for Cal’s people.

Cal had been tasked with watching the hatchlings for the night, and although he was in his human form, his ability to shift into a dragon would be quick should there be a need for him. Soft cittering and snores filled him with an overwhelming sense of peace. He loved this place. He loved his people. And he would do everything in his power to save them.

Cal shared these secrets openly with Finley and Dys, even though he swore to protect his family’s home island. More memories would flood into Finley’s mind. More images of his island, the way his people lived. The ancient language no one else could speak but his people, Finley would understand. He had been waiting to share their secrets until he found the right people. But Cal loved Finley, and they were perfect. And Dysphoria wanted secrets. Cal pulled away from Finley, feeling breathless. Once he pulled away, his face started to shift, his nose elongating into a snout, along with longer teeth, pointed ears, and hardened scales.

The golden scales cascaded down his neck, rippling over his growing arms and legs until they covered his entire body. The shift came faster now, and Cal turned away from Finley, keeping her and Dysphoria protected from the others. He stumbled back, his tail flicking out to knock over tables and something that felt softer. Cal would have to apologize to whoever he knocked down later.

Once he was fully transformed, Cal’s shoulders reached the rafters, but there was enough space that he wouldn’t cause damage unless he reared up onto his hind legs. He took over one entire side of the dining room, which was fine by him. It meant he could safely keep Finley away from the others and observe their behaviours, should someone unwelcome try to approach or take what was his away from him.

Cal wrapped his tail around Finley, holding her securely and huffed a breath of air through his nostrils, a warning to stay away from them.

Now that he was fully shifted, the drugs evaporated from Cal’s system. He blinked and looked at the room with new awareness. Cal had never lost control so rapidly before. He felt shame creep over him. And betrayal. Cal turned his attention to Barty and Nicky. A low rumble crept up his stomach and into his throat, reverberating around the room before he settled his head onto his front legs and watched.

A small shadowed dragon bounded over to Callaghan and Finley. He watched the unique creature with intrigue, finding the magic common yet unique in the way it was formed. The creature tapped Cal’s nose with his own, and what passed as a dragonic chuckle sounded from him. He pulled Finley closer with his tail, so she could get a closer look.

After a moment, four cute looking creatures appeared around Annika, scenting the air and walking around tentatively. They weren’t solid shadow. Annika could still pick out the errors in her formation and were they lacked depth or detail, but they were freaking adorable.

Annika cooed over her furry creatures, naming all of them instantly. The rabbits were Terry and Charlie, and the terriers were Elisabeth and Lunchbox Jr. Every one of them got belly rubs and scritches. Annika turned to look at Rohan, presenting her creation proudly. She looked to Willow next, but the giant lady seemed a little preoccupied. Honestly, everyone but the sober people was more preoccupied with their own journey. And there was a rumble and the ground shook. Annika turned, and her eyes widened in alarm before she got knocked off her feet.

A freaking dragon stood in the middle of Haven. Annika sat on her butt, staring up at the golden creature in awe. She only knew it was a dragon thanks to popular media. Her family didn’t have a word for this, and Jack had mentioned such creatures before, but Annika had never come across one herself. At least, not to her recent knowledge.

Annika quickly summoned a series of shadows. They undulated and pulsed around her, shifting and morphing into the perfect likeness of Callaghan’s dragon. Only miniature and black. Annika grinned. Perfect. Now she could recreate the dragon as a shadow at any time. Which was good since no one back home was going to believe her.

Annika leaned back on her hands, completely unconcerned about Cal taking up half of Haven. She watched her dragon waddle over to Cal and boop his nose. Annika tilted her head back, searching for an upside-down Rohan. She grinned at him.

”Magic stick time?”

Ezekiel pulled into the small, gravelled parking lot, belting the Bowie lyrics right along with Demetri. It was a crime not to sing to Bowie, and well, they were trying to be upstanding citizens now. He shut the car off after the conclusion of the song, laughing. Thank God they were finally here. It had been the most awkward and tense last twenty minutes until Bowie came on.

Zeke slipped his keys into his pocket before he did a quick tie of the blue bandana Demi had slipped him around his right wrist. He glanced at Demetri, smiling shyly before he focused on grabbing his and Nancy's stuff out of the back.

He grabbed his guitar case, looking at the others. There were several RCMP officers milling about and a couple random people. Zeke frowned. Was this going to be some summer camp for delinquents where he and the counselors ended up being role models for troubled youth? Fuck that.

Zeke shouldered his bag and guitar case, carrying Nancy's with a free hand. ”We okay?” he asked her, while they had a moment.

Nancy lifted her sunglasses up, repositioning them so that way they were perched on top of her hair. "Yeah, why wouldn't we be?" she asked him, before punching him on the arm affectionately.

Ezekiel grinned and nodded. ”Of course. Good.” he kissed the side of her head, feeling better. ”Let's go get this over with then.” He walked over to the group, standing next to Demetri and took in the group.

They all seemed to be around the same age and looked cool enough. Dobbs seemed a little weird, but maybe that just had more to do with being in charge of a bunch of university aged kids.

Zeke looked at Demetri when he asked what happens after the sun goes down. ”We're in the middle of the woods. In the mountains. There's wild animals all over the place.”

A genuine smile slipped across Annika’s face. She wouldn’t mind being Rohan’s friend, especially since he had such a strong connection with nature. ”Thanks, Rohan,” she said before she turned and stuck her hand into the candy dish.

”What’s your favourite colour?” she asked Willow.

”Purple,” she responded.

Annika fished out the green and purple circle and handed it to Willow in return. After the conversation with Rohan, Annika wasn’t going to force Willow to take it, but she did hope she wouldn’t be taking a candy alone.

Annika popped the green candy into her mouth, taking a sip of her mocktail to chase it down. Annika waited a few minutes, looking around at the others in the room while she waited for the candy to work its magic. Soon enough, Annika started to feel strangely energetic and more powerful than she had ever felt before. Her body seemed to tingle with all the different possibilities. Annika felt like she could do anything she wanted. Like summon a horde of cute shadow animals. Perhaps it wasn’t the most creative use of her talent, but Annika wasn’t sure how Haven’s magic would react to her creating a portal to the top of Mount Everest.

As she drew on her power, she felt a faint burn envelope her body. It was not something that normally happened when she used her power, but she didn’t care. She was the most powerful being in the room right now.

”Yes, very comfortable,” Callaghan agreed. His fingers and cheeks tingled where Dysphoria made their presence known. He leaned into Finley more, casting a sideways glance at Dys, before looking at Willow, who was preoccupied giving candy to another.

”They can join in later. For now, you’re mine.” Cal said and turned his head back to brush his lips along Finley’s cheek. He made his way to Finley’s neck and kissed her gently before putting a little more bite into his kiss. He hadn’t even noticed the way his teeth had elongated and sharpened, giving a more predatory feel to his bite.

”You taste good, too,” he noted, licking the spot of red that had appeared after puncturing her skin. ”What sort of secrets are you looking for today, Dys?” Cal asked.

He turned his head to focus on Dysphoria. He still cradled Finley close with one arm wrapped around her, but he used a free hand to tickle Dysphoria’s chin. The claws that his hands had turned into gave him pause, but he only moved one to scratch Dys’s chin instead.

The buzz under his skin, coupled with the rising heat he felt, was a distant warning that he was starting to shift and lose control, but the thought of transforming in this small space didn’t faze him. He had shifted into his dragon with Dysphoria before, and they seemed to like the animalistic side in him. And Cal did like to please Finley and Dys.

While Rhiannon zipped up their jacket, more and more people trickled into the foyer. By the looks of things, it seemed that everyone who was invited here was being blackmailed. The chances that one of them was the blackmailer didn’t seem as likely now. The dining room door opened then, and Rhi snapped her head to the intruder. The butler. Hmm. Interesting that he always just seemed to know where the rest of the guests were and “appeared” out of thin air.

Rhainnon looked up towards the ceiling, scanning for cameras hiding in the corners or along the walls. But just as quickly as Felix arrived, he left, leaving the award guests alone once more. Rhiannon grabbed an umbrella.

”Let’s get this over with,” they said and made their way outside, opening the umbrella once they were past the door’s threshold.

”Oh, yes. That sounds delicious. Thank you,” Annika said, blushing from the attention Mithza gave her. After she sipped her delicious drink, she refocused on her companions.

Annika’s eyes widened once the owl acknowledged her. This creature was ancient. She was sure of it. Although she had no real way of telling. She bowed her head to the owl, listening to the tale Rohan told of how to two came to be together.

Annika was fascinated by the idea Rohan briefly explained to her. Spirit Hallow. It reminded her of her connection with her people. How she could talk to them and summon them should she require it.

”That’s amazing. I can see why this one chose you,” Annika said. ”The idea of a Spirit Hallow is also intriguing,” Annika said, making room for Willow to join the conversation. It seemed she was also interested in the topic of conversation.

”Once I discovered my family history, I developed the ability to summon my ancestors as guides or guardians. Well, ancestors and descendants,” Annika clarified. She always forgot just how old she actually was. Plus, it didn’t make sense to a lot of people that she was the ancestor of her people. Of course, if anyone would understand it would be her classmates at Strange Academy.

Her attention was, regrettably, drawn away from Rohan and his companion to that of Haven’s hosts. A game. Annika liked games, but she highly doubted this was a regular game or a hunting game. It was probably more along the lines of the ones her father favoured.

Annika sipped her drink while she listened and watched Barty give Callaghan the first candy. Annika blushed from the intimate display, but she found she couldn’t look away either. It was rather intimate. And hot.

Once they parted, Annika eyed the candy bowl suspiciously. She walked closer to it, examining the different colours.

”Rohan, do you have a favourite colour?” she asked her coven mate.

The sound of Nicholas’s voice pulled Callaghan’s attention back to the bar. He gave the witch an appraising look, appreciating the view from where he stood. It seemed Nicky had also chosen to show off while maintaining impeccable fashion sense.

The announcement of the game to be something with magic didn’t surprise Callaghan. He recognized the idea of the game, but had no recollection beyond that. Whatever the case, Cal would be participating. He rarely turned down a new experience or one he became fond of.

Callaghan took a sip of his drink while Barty took a candy from the jar and approached his first victim—him. Callaghan grinned, his eyes tracking Barty’s hands as they slipped the candy in between his teeth, a silent question in his eyes.

"Mm, mi juego favorito." Cal framed his thumb and index finger on Barty's jaw, leaning in to kiss the flirtatious twin. However, Cal's eyes slid to Nicky's while he held Barty in place. A silent request that Cal better have his chance with the other brother later on.

Without further delay, Callaghan accepted the candy. He grabbed it with his own teeth as he felt Barty pressured his tongue against the hard candy and pushed it in. Barty’s tongue quickly moved to set the candy aside in Cal's cheek as he began to make out for a brief moment before slowly pulling away.

"Now, not all of you need snog your chosen target, but you're more than welcomed to if you'd both like."

"It is a lot more fun," Callaghan agreed. He leaned in to whisper in Barty's ear. "Are you participating or watching?" Cal knew the twins had a certain brand of mischief they liked to perform, especially in Haven. He didn't want to interfere if there was a plan afoot.

"Oh, participating of course. I'm not one to shy away from a little candy."

Cal grinned and finished off his drink. He stared at his glass for a moment as it started to twist and reform its shape. The effects of the candy were taking hold already. He leaned in closer to Barty, craving closeness with the witch. "Excellent. Shall we keep playing, or should I see what I can find for Finley and Dys?" Just the mere mention of their names had Callaghan's heart beating faster in anticipation. He could hear the pounding clearly in his ears, drowning everything else out. Tonight was going to be very interesting.

Barty ran a finger down Cal's chest, slowly tracing his muscles as his eyes stayed affixed to Cal's. His finger lazily made its way back up before lifting the dragon's chin and giving him a kiss. "We'll have plenty of time to play after we get this party started. Let's see what treats you can get in store for our favorite flirtatious fae."

Cal enjoyed the sensation of Barty’s finger trailing over his body. He really liked it. Cal was nearly ready to forget Barty’s words altogether and take him to one of the private rooms until the word ‘fae’ was spoken. Right. Cal’s focus snapped away to look at Finley perched up at the bar. The pounding of his heart seemed to increase more.

Cal loved Finley. Wait, what?

He always loved Finley. They were perfect, and when he met Dysphoria, he didn’t think there was something beyond perfection, but there they sat.

Cal made his way to the dish of candies. He selected the clear pyramid with rainbow hues before he invaded Finley’s personal space, ignoring anyone who was around them.

The world continued to bend and twist around him, but his focus was entirely on Finley, and the love he felt for them and Dys.

"Dysphoria, mi flor, Finley… querida." He caressed their cheek tenderly. "I brought you something," he said, presenting them with his selection.

The scent of them suddenly invaded his senses, but it wasn’t their usual notes of forest, flowers, and the rust scent of blood. It was something more colourful. They smelled like his island after a recent storm. The smell of ozone was still fresh, the salt in the air strong from the wind pulling it off the ocean, and the sweat from the bodies of his people. He couldn’t practically taste it on his tongue as he licked his lips.

Cal pushed closer to Finley and Dys, separating her legs to stand in between them. He continued to present her with the candy, more than eager to see what effects they would experience.

”Oh! Right. Yes,” Rhiannon nodded vigorously. How could they have forgotten that everyone was supposed to meet outside to discuss the blackmailing people had received? Rhi’s head definitely wasn’t in it right now.

They shuffled along behind Ralph like a lost puppy dog. Truth be told, they didn’t know why they were taking this whole thing so hard. Sure, the night with Renee had been pleasant, but it wasn’t earth-shattering. Rhiannon hadn't planned on proclaiming their love to Renee this morning over dry toast and black coffee, but it was still affecting them. Maybe it had something to do with their past.

Rhannion froze, staring at nothing as the realization dawned on them. Was this some unresolved trauma bullshit? Fuck that. Rhiannon focused on the object Ralph held in front of them. Rain jacket. Right. It was raining. Put it on Rhi, smile, everything is fine.

Rhiannon smiled at Ralph, thanked them and slipped the rain jacket on. Everything was fine.

Rhiannon became listless again as they followed Ralph around the La Lune mansion. They wanted to get to the bottom of Renee’s death, but what if it really was an accident? Rhiannon felt this strange sense of limbo. They didn’t know how they were supposed to be feeling in this moment. Angry wasn’t working, and depressed wasn’t much better. The staff seemed to be trying to keep everything normal, and the family didn’t even seem to notice someone was dead and another person was missing.

Rhiannon was pulled from their thoughts when they heard him speak and another voice answer. Rhiannon looked up to see Constance, the other dancer. Rhi nodded to them before looking confused.

”Show up for what?” Rhiannon asked, having forgotten any conversation or plans to meet up and talk outside with other members of this weird prize.

Annika took a step forward when she saw Willow had taken a tumble into the suit of armour. She was ready to help the girl, but a few people had already stepped in to ensure that she was okay. Annika turned her attention to the portrait. She could check on Willow once they all made it through.

The concept of sharing her magic with a strange thing she didn’t understand had her hesitating to walk through the portrait first. Annika watched the twins and others go through the door before she shook her hands out and stepped forward.

She examined the portrait closely, seeing all the intricate details before she placed a finger against the boy in the painting. Shadows danced down Annika’s arm and entered the painting before she felt the beating and was sucked inside. Annika gasped, her eyes widening as the pleasant feeling of something new sparked across her body.

Annika stumbled into Haven, but rather than take in the room before her, she turned to look back at the wall she had just walked through. A grin was planted on her face, her eyes shining. Oh, she was definitely going to have to try an unlock those secrets.

The idea that there was another world, or something that could be like her Everdark, was fascinating to her. Jack had never mentioned the Neverish before, but she supposed there were things in this world that even the great Wizard, Jack Hawthorne, didn’t know. Or he felt his daughter didn’t need to know such things.

Leaving that thought behind, Annika turned to walk further into the room. She took in the moody tones and various seating arrangements before she found herself standing along the bar. It seemed the natural starting point of the evening.

”Excuse me, do you have anything non-alcoholic? A mocktail or a birthday special?” Annika had had alcohol before. She rebelled like most teenagers, but she also had a father who wasn’t like most. However, she never cared for the taste, and when she met her biological family and learned of their struggles with alcohol, Annika had completely sworn off the stuff. Besides, there were other mind-altering substances that could be far more entertaining. Annika still had dreams about the first time she had dream-walked with her ancestors.

While she waited for a drink, Annika looked around the room once more. She stood near Barty and Rohan. One was a coven mate, and the other was one of the strange, standoffish twins of this establishment. Annika didn’t know much about either of them, but there was something about both of them that she seemed drawn to. Annika’s eyes roamed over Barty, trying to get a sense of his aura. She had never been good at figuring out people this way. She supposed she was too impatient for it, but her people always pushed her to practice. She tried with Rohan next and noticed the wooden creature nuzzled into his neck. Annika stepped forward, entering the personal space of Barty and Rohan.

”Oh, they are quite precious. Hello, shonkwahsótha ko'khó:wa, Annika greeted traditionally. She bowed her head and smiled at the creature before looking at Rohan with more interest and respect. ”And what feats have you accomplished to have the wisdom-keeper of the forests as your guide?”

Callaghan didn’t hesitate to walk over and offer his assistance to Willow after she stumbled into the suit of armour. He wasn’t exactly needed, but Callaghan wasn’t one to sit behind when someone might be hurt or in trouble.

He gave Finley a flirtatious smile and a nod before they entered the portrait. Cal looked back at Willow and Cassie.

”Are you sure you are okay, little one? Make absolutely certain before you cross over,” Cal warned. He stepped back and watched Cassiopeia walk up to the painting like she owned it. He smirked, admiring the girl’s strength and confidence before she walked through.

Callaghan remained behind, making sure the others had an easy time getting across, until he was the only soul standing in the room with the painting. His eyes roamed over the art piece, taking in the delicate work. The colours, the foreground and background, how the invisible lines drew your eye to look here and there. Cal loved art. He loved the stories art told, the hidden meanings each piece seemed to contain. Each one was unique, full of knowledge waiting to be unlocked. Cal fought the urge to sit on the ground and stare at the painting until he uncovered more secret words. Every time he came to Haven, he felt compelled to do this. The first time he was at the school, he didn’t even cross over. He remained in this room, seeing and writing until the students started to walk back through at the end of the night.

The young dragon’s face fell, the mask he wore slipping as he took a moment of reprieve. Callaghan sighed, scrubbing a hand over his face. A lot was riding on him this year. The connections he was making here weren’t yielding any results for his family, even with Mikkail’s help. If he couldn’t make anything stick this year, he wouldn’t be returning the year after. The dragon shifted restlessly under Cal’s skin. The thought of failing didn’t sit well. All the knowledge in this school, left undiscovered. All the friendships he had made, left to disintegrate. Then there was the obligation to Mikkail. The partnership and friendship that had developed.

Cal sighed once more and shook off the feeling of failure. ”It is only the first day. You have time.” Once he was feeling composed, Callaghan plastered the easygoing smile back on his face and strode through the painting. A warm sensation caressed his skin, like a lover’s embrace, but just as quickly as it touched him, it left, and Callghan stood in Haven. The smile came more easily now that he was surrounded by his companions.

At the end of the bar stood an old-fashioned, the smoke still billowing off the top of the glass from a fresh make. Callaghan grinned and walked over to pick up the beverage, then took a sip. The previous worries seemed to melt off his shoulders. Callaghan swallowed, the comforting burn warming him.

”Perfection as always, Mithza.” He tipped his glass to her before facing the rest of Haven. The black menu with gold lettering hovered just on the periphery of Callghan’s vision, enticing him to blow off his responsibilities and invite a few people into his favourite room. Later, Cal reminded himself. He took another sip and entered the crowd.

“Can we play a game?” Callaghan glanced at Jake and grinned. ”Oh, we certainly could, child. What do you have in mind?”
