So, there's this rabbit outside my house, and I'm not sure what to do with it. It sits there sometimes, eating grass and staring into space. It isn't mine, though, so it runs off when we approach.

You know, it's kind of funny to me how no one went with a pseudo legendary as a starter. That said, this is coming from the guy that wanted a Spearow so feel free not to listen to me :P

Well, it doesn't have to be a fight, they can just win at something. For example, the pokemon contest example. Or, you could have a scavenger hunt contest or something, where they have to find the most items.
In fact, truth be told, a battle royale would be pretty fun, but it brings up logistical problems. Say two people who both want victini are in the same group or something, the one who didn't get it would be nursing some pretty damn bitter resentment at the dude who did, and the fact that having means you always win might make the RP a bit too easy.

Well, if it's the victory pokemon, why don't you just have a big battle royale for whoever wants it when/if it appears and give it to the winner? or something.
Truth be told, I don't really have any intention to go for legendaries so I don't really have one in mind, but for flavour I guess I'd go for one of the 3 birds or something. That's just for flavour, though.
