Elena's relief was short lived as another seven meter, one that she hadn't even been aware of, came crashing down in front of them. The red haired girl was sure if her heart kept up it's frantic beating she would have a heart attack any second now. She saw the whirl of a survey corps cloak flash before the metallic stink of Titan blood filled the air as a woman sliced through the beast’s neck with ease.

The woman landed, breathing hard as she surveyed her kill before turning towards them. “Get to the gate; leave this to the Elites”, she ordered, snow colored hair rustling gently as a breeze cut through the corridor. Elena thought that it looked incredibly soft and her left hand twitched on reflex. The low, thundering echos of Titan footfall snapped her out of her daydreaming as another one turned the corner. “Quickly,” added the soldier, her tourmaline stare already fixed on the intruder.

“Y-yes ma’am!” Elena stuttered out, falling into a hasty salute. Mark followed suit before they turned away from their savior and anchored into a wall to set out towards where the Garrison Corps were stationed on Wall Rose. As they flew towards their destination, she couldn't help but turn back to catch another glimpse of the white haired woman.

“Hey Mark,” she yelled over the wind, turning away from the elite just as she got ready to face off with her foe. “Do you know who that was?”

“Of course,” he answered easily, his brown eyes cutting over to level a bewildered look at her before turning his attention back to the landscape before him. “Everyone knows who that is. She's Sarah Reinhardt. They say she was trained by Levi. She's one of the Survey Corps finest!”

“Oh,” Elena answered, her small voice being lost to the air that whoosed around them. They had almost reached the wall now. 'She must be strong then,’ she thought idly. 'I’ll have to ask Petra if she knows her, the next time we're together.’
Her heart hammered away in her chest, the loud, staccato rhythm of it overriding everything else as she stared down at the smoking shell of the titan that had been controlled by Eren Yeager only moments earlier. Elena’s eyes shifted back and forth quickly, bewitched as one of his fellow team members began hauling him out of the steaming hunk of flesh. “He really did it,” she breathed, lilting voice barely above a whisper. She had been convinced just hours earlier when the Colossal Titan had broken through the gate that they would all die. But now, as she stared at the boulder blocking the breach in Wall Rose, she felt an unfamiliar feeling blooming in her chest.

Elena couldn’t be sure, but she thought it might be hope.

“Elena, look sharp!” her squadmate, a dark haired man by the name of Mark, warned as he landed next to her with a dull ’thud’. He knocked his shoulder against hers and jerked his chin towards the street where a seven meter class was steadily lumbering towards the boulder. “You go ‘round front and draw his attention. I’ll hit the nape.”

“Why don’t you be the bait?” the redhead snapped, trying to school her expression to keep the fear from her face. This was only her second time seeing a titan and her nerves had yet to settle.

“Cut the shit, Ral, and just help me take him down,” Mark ordered in a gruff voice, but his face was sympathetic. “Besides, you know I’m better with a blade.”

“Right,” Elena answered begrudgingly, shifting her weight as she anchored her hooks into the building on the opposite side of the street. “Wish me luck,” she said simply, knuckles going white as she tightened her death grip on her weapons and took a running leap from the ledge to propel herself into the titan’s line of sight.

The beast stopped, dead gaze locking on her as soon as she entered his field of vision. Elena could feel all the hair on her neck stand up the moment she felt his focus shift to her. “C’mon, Mark,” she whispered to herself as she landed on a perch just in range of the titan’s gasp. The titan only hesitated for a moment before shrieking and lurching forward, meaty arms outstretched in a bid to grab the compact girl.

Elena gasped before she quickly fired her hook into another wall and hurtled towards it, but the piece of the building she was attached to gave way, leaving her unanchored and plummeting to the ground below. She shrieked and tucked in on herself to better roll as she made impact, grunting when the jagged edge of a rock sliced through her left shirt sleeve and left a thin line of blood on her bicep.

The blue eyed girl jumped up and whirled around with an undignified squeak to face off with her foe, only to find it face first on the ground with Mark standing on the back of it’s neck. His blade steamed as the titan’s blood began to evaporate and as he pursed his lips to try and hold back his laughter.

“It’s no--not funny!” she yelled, but the way her voice broke in the middle of that statement only seemed to amuse him more.

“I know, I know,” Mark seemed to apologize, holding up his hands in a universal sign for surrender. “But by the walls, you should have seen your face! You looked like you were gonna puke any second!”

Personality:
Elena is endlessly curious and quick witted thanks to years of private tutoring and spends a good deal of her spare time curled up in her bunk while pouring over the latest history book that she's managed to get her hands on. Despite this bookish manner, most of her teammates are fond of Mr. Ral's adoptive daughter. She has a friendly disposition and is quick to encourage people when they seem like they need it. Her kindness shouldn’t be mistaken for weakness though, as Elena does not tolerate bullying and will call out anyone she thinks is being a jerk.

Her time spent in the underground has given her a great sense of compassion and when she's not studying Elena loves to help out around the base, whether that means helping bake breads in the kitchen or assisting some of the less affluent recruits with their reading and writing. The one place you will rarely find Elena is the stables. This is because she didn't see a horse up close until after she moved above ground and she believes they look more like beasts than gentle creatures.

To the great dismay of her father, who wants nothing more than to see her and her sister married well, Elena is quite dense when it comes to matters of the heart and doesn’t always notice when she’s being flirted with. Some of the other members of the survey corps have made a game of seeing how outlandish they can make their advances before she notices she’s being hit on. On the rare occasion when she does catch on to their intentions she becomes quite shy and easily flustered.

History:
Elena was born into the darkness of The Underground to two black market merchants who did surprisingly well for themselves, despite their circumstances. They traded in all sorts of things ranging from meats to gas and spare parts for omni-directional mobility gear. This kept their pockets somewhat full and their house mostly warm, so Elena felt very blessed. Her parents taught her from a young age the importance of stealth and going unnoticed, knowing that drawing attention to one's self could be a death sentence on the streets beneath the capital city. The young girl learned to blend into a crowd as well as to tread lightly, and if she ever drew the attention of any unsavory types she always manged to lose them just as quickly.

Her luck ran out the year she turned six, when she came home to find both of her parents murdered and all of their wares stolen.

Elena didn't have much time to mourn them however, as she was too busy trying to survive. She was only able to stay in her home two days before it was ransacked by scavengers and she had to flee into the streets. She spent the next two months always staying hidden and under the radar of local gangs while sorting through rubbish bins to find bits of food. One morning when the growling of her stomach became too painful to ignore, she attempted to steal a loaf of bread from a convoy of merchants traveling from Stohess District and heavily guarded by MPs. She was caught of course, and as the Military Police slapped the shackles onto her small wrists, Elena was sure she was going to spend the next few years of her life in prison.

The owner of the bread, a merchant by the name of Mr. Ral, took pity on her and told the guards he wouldn't be pressing charges. Once they released her the merchant told the young girl she could eat until she was full. Elena stuffed handfuls of bread and cured meats into her mouth, answering questions such as, "Where are your parents?" and "Are you all alone?" through sobbing hiccups, until finally the man asked if she'd like to come and live above ground with him and his family.

She agreed in an instant.

It wasn't until later that Elena would learn that the merchant's mercy stemmed from having his own daughter at home, an eight year old girl by the name of Petra with honey colored hair and kind eyes. She had been begging for a little sister and as Mr. Ral had lost his wife a few years earlier, he had been unable to provide her with one.

This event was a major turning point in little Elena's life and from then on she always had a warm bed to sleep in, food in her belly, and plenty of love from both her adoptive father and sister. Mr. Ral insisted that his newest daughter should sit in with Petra whenever their private tutor came by, so she soon learned to read and write as well as maths and the history of Paradis and The Walls. When she was old enough, Elena took over baking the bread and sweet rolls for her father's stall and quickly found that she had a knack for it.

She joined the Survey Corps cadet training program in the middle of her eighteenth year, wanting to follow in the footsteps of her older sister. She completed her training recently to become a fully fledged member of the survey corps.

Abilities:
Baking -- Never underestimate the power of a home cooked meal!

Basic Survival Skills -- Her time in the underground helped hone some of Elena's basic skills such as building fires, finding shelter, field dressing wounds, as well as skinning small animals such as rats and feral dogs. If she was ever left alone on the other side of The Walls she would be able to keep herself alive, provided that she doesn't become Titan food, of course.

Stealth -- The skill that she prides herself the most in, Elena is still able to slip through situations unnoticed when she wants to. Some of her teammates have even threatened to tie a bell around her neck so she will stop accidentally scaring them. It is so ingrained in her mannerisms that most of the time she's not even aware of the way her steps don't make any noise or that she's breathing so quietly that it is undetectable except for the gentle rise and fall of her chest.

A Wealth of Knowledge -- Elena has spent countless hours reading different texts and retains a great deal of information that she has learned from them. She greatly admires the great minds like Erwin Smith who excels in battle tactics planning and most recently Armin Arlert, who's quick thinking was the main reason Eren was able to plug the whole in Wall Rose.
