His gaze softened compassionately at her response, tracking her movements as she took her seat on the deck chair across the side table from his. Their time together had been hectic and riddled with dangers, demanding constant alertness, and it was only during this time of peace and quiet that he finally had the chance to notice the awkward stiffness in her steps and tension in her shoulders as she tried to relax. To live perpetually on guard like she had must be unspeakably tiring, to the point where she had to numb herself to the exhaustion just to adapt. Her abrasive choice of words was understandable considering her lack of socializing experience.
"Must be lonely like that," he responded with a simple remark, before turning back towards the star-studded night sky. Several seconds of silence passed before he spoke up again, this time with a casual inquiry. "Have you ever had anyone you'd consider a friend?"
