The desire to join an RP instead of run one, but the lack of anything being advertised or open that fits my interests

Why are people posting 1x1 'looking for' threads in the main section, when there's a whole section for 1x1 RP's?

It'd be nice to be able to *play* an RP I'm interested in for once, rather than having to *run* one all the time. Of course, doesn't help that I'm picky about what I enjoy.

Hmmmmm... PM inviting me to an RP on Discord by a user who just joined the site and has no posts? Doesn't sound iffy at all, no sir.

Bio

I've been roleplaying in one form or another since the late '90's. I've played as many tabletop games as I have online ones, and the quality of both has varied wildly.
I have an active imagination, and I love immersive, descriptive roleplaying. My genres of choice are sci-fi, and modern-day (with a sci-fi twist). I like RP's that mix reality with fiction, and throw an unusual and exciting twist into an otherwise normal setting - something like Stargate SG-1 would be an example, or Battle: Los Angeles. An almost recognizable world, but with some sci-fi twists.
I'm a fan of military and action-based RP's that do this especially, and they are easily my favourite - though I rarely see any that appeal to me enough - all the military RP's are too 'plain', and anything else modern day is usually fantasy or fandom. Or *shudder* school RPs...

I have a lot of fandoms; Transformers, Macross, MLP: FiM, Fallout, Battletech, Ace Combat, and others to varying degrees. But I don't often join fandom RPs because the ones I'm into don't come up, or I am very picky about my RPs and their plots and feel.

I don't play in free, as I find the short posts and bad spelling and grammar infuriating. I like a lot of depth, story, setting and character to my RPs, so am usually found in Casual and sometimes Advanced. Though, usually running my own RPs.

I'm 43 years old, and live in the UK, so I may not be on all the time.
I also like playing non-human characters, especially anthro ones, robots or synthetics, or some hybrid of both.

Outside of my RP tastes and hobby; I read a lot of books, play wargames and TTRPGs, make model aircraft and vehicles, and am also a brony and furry. I have been running a large local furmeet group for the last 10 years and have been involved in running a very successful UK MLP convention.

Rafale speaks complete sense, I kind of support his statements. However the point of this RP is to give freedom of choice, I do believe.

I don't think we need to talk about this any more.
The MiG-29 will be available later. There are plenty of aircraft of all manner of roles, specializations, origins and loadouts available. If you don't like any of them, or if you don't like that there's not whichever one is your favourite available, or if you disagree with me removing the MiG-29, then I'm sorry about that, but it's too bad. Don't play if it bothers you that much; plenty of other people are fine with it, and if you can't get over it, then you won't be missed.
End of discussion on this subject, please.

A few questions:
I assume that the PCs will stay/go on missions together from the start, right?

Will the pilots be assigned a number in the squadron or will they just be referred to by their nicknames/callsigns?

The GM posts first and everyone posts once until the GM posts again, thus starting a new "round". This is the system the RP will use, right?

1) Yes, that's the plan. The story will begin with us all meeting for our first briefing.
2) You'll have a number in the squadron, and your callsign/nickname will probably be used by the other pilots to refer to you in an informal manner (as you'd expect)
3) I'm REALLY not fond of a set posting order, but in a rough way that's correct: I'll post to set up a 'scene' for everyone to react to, e.g. 'oh no, some bad guys', then everyone can react to that situation, then I'll post again resolving the situation and setting up the next part.

I hope there is a good balance of time on the base and on mission and anything else in between, be interesting following the lifes of these pilots outside there craft as well asin it :)

There will most assuredly be a balance between time spent interacting off-mission, and time spent in the thick of it. I feel that interacting and talking in character outside of the action is almost as important as the exciting blowing stuff up, as that's when you really get into your characters' background, and starting building up the interesting dynamics between people.
That little trailer was great. I love the animation style - the way the pilot moved as he walked was really realistic!

In other news, I'm tabletop gaming this weekend, so I'll be incommunicado for the most part. I might drop in here and there, but I'll be gone, mostly. I'll get a post up on my return.

Turtles. It's sad because I really like the looks of the Fulcrum.

Looks aren't everything.

Eh, I switched to the Fencer. Swing-wings FTW. As long as I can eventually upgrade into the Su-34 or something else, I'm cool.

There will be upgrades after completing a few missions. Essentially once you do a few things to ease the pressure off of the UN and get some 'breathing room', Avalon and the UN will be able to get to work on rolling out some more conversions and aircraft you'll be able to take into battle. But that'll take a while, it won't be right after your first mission or anything.

Personally it is your RP, your built it for yourself and other to come an join in this game environment, you did a lot of research and put in a very good cast of planes. I don't blame you in saying it your game and you put in what planes you want and in fact I would support that if you take that stance, you shouldn't have to feel pressured into putting in plans that you know will pop up everywhere or drop the uniqueness and efforts of others. even with you putting up those 'Normal suspects' I am still sticking to my choice from the original cast you put in. IMO I have to probably agree with you and Rafale concerning the 29, but it's your RP you choose what to do :) My cs will be up later today soon.EDIT: Actually the Gripen gets a mention in my CS ( Little spoiler alert there.)

I think if you took out the Fulcrum, Flanker, and Eagle (and F-16 if you don't want it) you'd have it the way you want it.Even if you took out the Foxbat I wouldn't really object. Limitations are fun.

Right, I have removed the Fulcrum, Flanker, Eagle and F-16.
I have re-added the planes I removed, and I have also added in a bunch more Eastern-Bloc aircraft of earlier vintage. I may also add in some more US/Western ones of around the same era too, though that will come later. I'll edit the post to include links later too.

Sorry for those of you that will have to change your sheets now, but I personally feel that this is a better mix of aircraft, and I'm happier with it this way around.

The aircraft in question will be unlocked later in the game, so you'll have a chance to pilot - and upgrade - them then, but for now, what you see is what there is to choose from.

There may also be the occasional 'special mission' where you have to fly something that wouldn't normally be available, as in, a highly specialized aircraft, but that's for later on.
I've got a good idea on which aircraft to add when the opportunity comes to do so.

I think I might remove the Fulcrum, and add in a few more aircraft of older vintages.
Rafale said
While that is very radical, I may have to agree...Maybe we can have a cut-off date for planes? And besides, the whole idea is that even older planes can be modified to make them not only up to date but also make them multirole, so the MiG-29 isn't the only multirole that is possible. Even the A-4 can be made multirole, like Brazil has done with theirs, making them fourth-generation fighters comparable to the F-16 (I can scan the article about this from Combat Aviation Monthly if anyone wants).

I had originally made the decision that the majority of the aircraft would be from before 1980, and I'd rule out anything that has too many 'modernised' variants, or that was too common, which was why the F-16 etc. didn't make it in in the first place.
I agree with you entirely about the A-4, and the only reason I didn't select one was because I have a character who uses one in another RP.
As it is, I feel pressured into adding the other fighters, and like it's a bit of a reluctant compromise just so the 'normal suspects' can show up again, because people are bitching that they're not there.

Quite Frankly, I feel like saying it's my damn game, and I'll have the planes I want in it, and if they're not ones you want to fly, you don't have to play.

Ouch, here comes Flanker.

*waits for all the MiG-29's to turn into flankers*
Driving Park said
The easiest way to fix it would just be to remove the 29. :P

That is insanely tempting :P

Either way, I've now rectified it by taking out a few aircraft and adding in a few more. I haven't removed anything anyone's already picked though.

Also, all the currently posted characters have been approved and added to the OP.
I'm not convinced that half the reason that there are all the Fulcrums is because of the current attitude of 'Russia, Fuck yeah!', and that for some reason there's a movement among a lot of people that Russia and it's military technology are somehow underrated and 'amazing' compared to everyone elses' stuff. Not that I'm saying they're not more than adequate, or even exemplary.

I also think that it's because the MiG-29 is the only aircraft on the list that a lot of people will have heard of, and rather than looking into any of the others, people have just gone for the only one they know anything about, and the one that's the most 'modern' and relevant to their knowledge, rather than looking up on the capabilities of any of the others.

Really, Rafale made the best point (because he's awesome):

Remember, the story is about the character, not the plane. Just look at games like Ace Combat; if we take the canon plane of the Razgriz, for example, their F-5E's and F-14A's pale in comparison to many of the things they face, but they become feared as some of the greatest pilots in their world nonetheless. A man becomes an ace because of their own skills, not their plane

Just noticed that the listing of Matthew on the main page in "Active Characters" is slighty borked. A [/*] should be enough to solve it. :)OT: My character is not reluctant to fly a Jaguar, I don't really know how the MiG-29 can be that much better than all the other aircraft listed in the OP. But again, that could just be my lack of knowledge on the field.

I'll edit that so it's sorted, thanks for pointing it out.
And yeah, my character loves her plane, and I look forward to putting it into action as well. I don't see how it's going to slow me down or be anything but a great plane, and the same for anything else on that list.

As it is, I suppose I can reluctantly throw the F-16 and SU-27 into the OP list and remove a couple of other things, since there seems to be a desire to have them in there, despite the vast array of other aircraft to choose from.
RPCWhite said Plus like to tell my guys' stories during the rp.

Just so long as any 'big reveals' that might affect the plot are notified to me in advance - otherwise it might come across a bit like godmodding. And that you're just making it up as you go along. But sure, that's fine.

Can the more knowledgeable folk here recommend a thrust vectorable or already thrust vectoring pair of engines to replace the 25's Mach 3+ turbojets? Or, if possible, can the turbojets themselves be modified and made to thrust vector? Wiki says thrust vectoring is typically only used with turbofans.

I wasn't aware of that myself, but the MiG-31, which is a development of the MiG-25 uses turbofan engines, specifically these, and I have no issues with a thrust-vectored version of those being used. The SU-47 used them as well, and it had thrust-vectoring, so it's been done before.
