The desire to join an RP instead of run one, but the lack of anything being advertised or open that fits my interests

Why are people posting 1x1 'looking for' threads in the main section, when there's a whole section for 1x1 RP's?

It'd be nice to be able to *play* an RP I'm interested in for once, rather than having to *run* one all the time. Of course, doesn't help that I'm picky about what I enjoy.

Hmmmmm... PM inviting me to an RP on Discord by a user who just joined the site and has no posts? Doesn't sound iffy at all, no sir.

Bio

I've been roleplaying in one form or another since the late '90's. I've played as many tabletop games as I have online ones, and the quality of both has varied wildly.
I have an active imagination, and I love immersive, descriptive roleplaying. My genres of choice are sci-fi, and modern-day (with a sci-fi twist). I like RP's that mix reality with fiction, and throw an unusual and exciting twist into an otherwise normal setting - something like Stargate SG-1 would be an example, or Battle: Los Angeles. An almost recognizable world, but with some sci-fi twists.
I'm a fan of military and action-based RP's that do this especially, and they are easily my favourite - though I rarely see any that appeal to me enough - all the military RP's are too 'plain', and anything else modern day is usually fantasy or fandom. Or *shudder* school RPs...

I have a lot of fandoms; Transformers, Macross, MLP: FiM, Fallout, Battletech, Ace Combat, and others to varying degrees. But I don't often join fandom RPs because the ones I'm into don't come up, or I am very picky about my RPs and their plots and feel.

I don't play in free, as I find the short posts and bad spelling and grammar infuriating. I like a lot of depth, story, setting and character to my RPs, so am usually found in Casual and sometimes Advanced. Though, usually running my own RPs.

I'm 43 years old, and live in the UK, so I may not be on all the time.
I also like playing non-human characters, especially anthro ones, robots or synthetics, or some hybrid of both.

Outside of my RP tastes and hobby; I read a lot of books, play wargames and TTRPGs, make model aircraft and vehicles, and am also a brony and furry. I have been running a large local furmeet group for the last 10 years and have been involved in running a very successful UK MLP convention.

-Pilot-
Pilot Name: Ryan Shepard
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Personal Info:
Laid back, easy-going and friendly. Positive outlook and demeanour. Generally, a nice guy with strong principles and a firm moral compass. However, is vicious and ferocious against his enemies, and anyone who preys on the weakness and vulnerability of others. Doesn't brag about his accomplishments, and doesn't see himself as a hero or saviour of any kind, just someone doing what needs to be done, and should be done. Respects skill in others, and dismissive of bragging egotists.
Has a great fondness for the music and culture of the late 20th century, and values time to relax and unwind. Enjoys casual drinking and likes to read.

Brief Bio:
Ryan always had a tendency to look out for others, and a strong sense of moral justice, instilled in him since he was young. Always driven to stand up for himself and others, he often got in trouble for impulsive behaviour and a tendency toward using his fists and his mouth to call out others causing trouble, which left him shouldering much of the blame - although, those he helped out often paid him back in helping him out of it again.
Despite this, he made strong friends and connections, and managed to remain unbroken and kept his spirit through his childhood and teenage years, even after his father was arrested for speaking out against unfair conditions and policies, and was arrested after intervening in the arrest of a protestor.
With his family under the watchful eye of authorities, and his own life under scrutiny, Ryan left home and travelled around, working 'cash in hand' on numerous freighters and in ports. He picked up the skills of a Mobile Frame pilot during this time, and showed great aptitude for it.
When the station he was working in was attacked by a raiding force, he managed to improvise a defence with a cargo-handling frame well enough to get noticed, and was given further tuition by a Merc pilot, before being recruited into the company he now works for.
As such, he can be somewhat unorthodox in combat and unsure of himself, and has a rough edge to his piloting technique. However, he is eager to do well and learn.
Appearance:
Ryan is around 5' 7" with a wiry build, more that or a runner or swimmer than of a soldier. He has a clean-cut and square-jawed appearance, with permanent 5 o'clock shadow. His eyes are green-brown and always seem to be bright with intelligence and focused on whatever subject is at hand. He has sandy-blond hair, which is short and a little messy. His physique otherwise is fairly compact and average, with no real scars and marks, beyond the normal accumulation of lifes' accidents and occurances. He does have a tribal-type tattoo down the left side of his neck, and onto his left arm. His clothing is the standard type of hard-wearing and practical fatigues or other clothing one would expect from Mercenary types.

Personal Emblem:

-Mobile Frame-
Serial Number: GR-99
Designation/Nickname: Gyrfalcon
Weaponry/Equipment:
Multiple hardpoints for attachment of weapons or other mission equipment. Ryan's standard loadout consists of:

  • Hand-held/shoulder mount 50mm cannon (select-fire, rocket-assisted projectiles, intermediate-range, high-power anti-armour weapon. High accuracy, low RoF, small magazine. Folds down to back when not in use, hand-grip to fire from right shoulder).

  • Shoulder-mounted 6-tube guided missile launcher [L Shoulder]

  • arm-mounted 3-barrel 20mm rotary autocannon (rapid-fire general-purpose autocannon. Medium-range, high rate of fire, large drum magazine. Less armour penetration, good suppressive weapon)

  • Twin anti-infantry/anti-missile 5.56mm miniguns mounted on the head

Other equipment includes search/spotlights, a rocket-propelled grapple/winch, chaff/flare decoy launchers, anti-infantry shrapnel dischargers in the lower legs, and a variety of sensor equipment appropriate to its' combat role. There are storage 'bins' in both lower legs for a moderate amount of survival, utility and personal equipment.

Appearance:
Somewhere between the M-9 Gernsback and the ARL-99 Helldiver, in terms of general feel and appearance. Lots of angular panels and plates, and a very militaristic feel. Almost like a modern-day fighter jet or armoured vehicle in terms of design cues and influences.
Colour wise, the machine has a pattern not unlike Berlin Brigade camouflage, with some red trim, and the appropriate warning labels and insignia. The colours are a little sooty and smeared from natural use and operation.

Other:
This is Ryan's first personal combat Frame. It's not the most modern or front-line of machines, but has a respectable performance, and is more than adequate for someone like him, who is beginning their career as a combat pilot. The Gyrfalcon is a commonly found Mobile Frame, and is well known for reliability and simplicity, but not for its' advanced and hi-tech features.
Yeah, I was expecting a bit more activity now we're in a battle. It's fine for keeping up with in terms of posting, but it's a bit of a not seeing more happen. I know incubus is having computer problems, so that explains his absence.

I'll make a post to the IC on the 'morrow. Good to see that it has started though, yay and woo.
Hey good buddy. Mind if I hop in? I liked the first incarnation enough, and this one sounds even more my speed.
Might take me a little while to get my character up, but I'm interested.

I'm guessing the reasons for fighting are combinations of competition for resources and political and ideological differences, as well as all of these being used as reasons to wage war to distract people fron other problems too? Just so as we have some frame of reference for our characters feelings about who they're fighting.
I think I'm going to retract my participation - it's not through lack of interest, as I am pretty interested, but right now I can't really engage my brain to the level it needs or summon the energy to create a character and do the research and reading I think it deserves to be accurate, simply because of time constraints and obligations I already have.
I don't want to hold anyone else up, so I'll step aside for the moment, but thanks for letting me in to begin with.
You undersell yourself too much.
You're interested: it will be good.
And you have more than a working understanding of military equipment and terminology at least, and the ability to retain and process information. Which is more than can be said for other people in the past.
It will be fine.
Post is up now, to get things moving along. The strategy is quite simple: stop the baddies from getting to close to the ships!
Irry looked up with a grimace as the alarms sounded, before shifting his glance back to the others. Around her, they all showed the same gut reaction she did; at least the reactions of fighter pilots were something that were the same across the species divide. They all moved instinctively, heading for their craft.
"Commander," Irry said, pausing to turn back to Hayes. "Are you going to return to the Macross?"
"No," said Lisa firmly, shaking her head. "Space is about to get a lot more dangerous in the next few minutes, and an unarmed shuttle is no place to be in the middle of it all. And besides - If I'm going to be working from the bridge from now on, I ought to take my place there instead of hiding. Now go; your pilots need you. I can find my own way. Good luck!"
Irry managed a passable imitation of the humans' salute, before she too ran for her SV-VII, hot on the heels of the rest of her welcoming committee. As she turned, she caught the eye of the blond human. He paused as he met eyes with her, giving a tight smile and an affirming nod. She twitched her tail and returned the gesture, and waved to the others.
"Be careful!" she called, before running to her fighter and climbing aboard. A crewman tossed her helmet, and assisted her with buckling in, before the overhead grapple-crane arm locked around the points on the back of the fighter, and lifted it onto the elevator with the human and a handful of other Sentinel craft close behind. Armoured bulkhead doors slide closed behind the fighters, and the elevator lifted them to launch deck level.
Fighters were already streaming off of the catapults, Alpha/Beta pairs, solo Alphas and Betas, and Delta fighters. Across the gulf between the two ships, she caught sight of the same routine underway on the Macross as the two 'arms' of the ship thrust fighters into the void from their deck-side catapults. Then the deck-crewman waved her along with lighted batons, close behind Nawlin, who launched moments ahead. She glanced sideways and saw the blond human in his white-and-blue fighter, his head was down, but then he looked up and saw her again, giving a thumbs up.
The catapult shoe engaged, and she ran the engines up to power at the light-signal from ahead, before toeing off the brakes. A slam in her back, and the Alpha was airborne.

Gabe felt whisked along as events continued around him. The sirens going off had been the start of it, and he'd been swept up since then. So far, it was all so familiar; the grapple arm was a bit different, but served the same purpose as an aircraft tug, and the catapult deck was familiar enough.
He caught sight of the red panda, who was looking his way. He gave her an affirmative thumbs-up, she seemed nice enough so far, and was looking out for the human contingent pretty well. Besides, he recognized her Alpha from the previous battle. She'd covered his ass at one point, and he'd done the same back. She had some skills, and had put herself out there for the RDF forces. That kind of thing was something you gave a little respect and understanding for.
The Sentinel manning the catapult waved him forward, and the shoe engaged with a CLUNK. A blast deflector came up behind, and a familiar human voice crackled in his ear; another of the crew who'd crossed over as part of the RDF contingent, no doubt.
"Commander Strucker, cleared on takeoff. Form up with uh -" there was a quiet moment, before the voice came back "-Lieutenant Colonel Jacquo and her unit. Intercept enemy bandits, and draw them away from both friendly vessels so we can engage the enemy targets, over".
"Affirmative, CIC. Received and understood. Break. Ahlstrom, Suzuki - form up on me. We're joining the Sentinels lead on this op, the objective is to intercept the battle-crabs before they reach home-plate, and draw them off so they can bring the big guns into play. Over".

Irry monitored the stream of info going back and forth as the Sentinels and RDF pilots sorted themselves out of a muddle and into something approaching a tactical formation as the Invid ships closed in. Ahead of their main ships, a trio of the clam-like assault carriers powered ahead, accelerating to reach the predefined point in space where they'd open their shell-like doors, and all manner of crab-like Invid mecha would vomit forth into the void. Unlike the bigger vessels, their hulls gleamed burnt red under the distant glow of Valivarre, the system primary star.
"Stand by for contact," Irry advised in a tense voice over the squadron channel. "Launch long-range missiles on my mark, over"
"Wait one," advised Lisa's voice from the CIC. "Hold your current course and speed, over"
A flurry of flashes of light rippled from the Sentinel and Macross, as anti-ship missiles blasted forth from the VLS silos on both ships, and from the remaining escorts. The swarm of missiles rapidly overtook the fighter formation, lancing ahead toward the Troop Carriers and more distant capital ships. Bright beams stabbed out from the Invid ships, and numerous explosions dotted the silent expanse. However, almost as many of the cap-ship class missiles, each bigger than the fighters themselves, got through, and dotted the hulls of the enemy ships with silent wounds.
Then the Invid ships were through. The doors on their upper and lower hulls yawned open, and red and purple invid mecha blasted into the blackness on blue points of light, streaming globes of plasma and lethal frisbees of energy towards the fighters.
"All ships, fire!" called Irry, letting rip with her long-range missiles. Others followed suit, the missiles corkscrewing into the blackness on white trails. "Break and engage!" she followed up, and hauled her fighter into an effortless wingover, diving in pursuit of a shock-trooper as it attempted to sneak through the formation. Gabe blasted in hot pursuit, as Invid mecha barrelled through the formation and attempted to dodge-and-dive for the ships behind them, while their capital ships closed distance.
Sorry for lack of posts. I'm in a bit of a personal slump right now. I'll get things back on track shortly.
