My vote goes to Piety

I enjoyed reading all entries but Piety stood out for me.

Violence and Piety had a more spooky feel to it than The Light That Leaves No Darkness and The ghost in the house. The two latter felt, to me, more like a fantasy-story and a little less halloweenish.

Violence and Piety gave more chills and the Spooktober vibe, one would look for in entries in a setting like this contest, was more palpable.

Between Violence and Piety it was a bit more difficult to choose my favourite but Piety painted the better picture with words.
You hear more about the macabre history and the present flows in neatly. I love the open ending, makes me wonder what will happen to the unfortunate soul that walked in.
I didn't get that feeling in Violence, eventhough that story was well written it didn't really make me wonder what would happen next.

Piety managed to get you sucked in the 'you'character in just a few lines while Violence felt more like spectating till the end, it didn't pull me in like Piety did.
Jill released the breath she hadn't realised she was holding. "good, thank you," she said as she looked at Fer's and Ash with a slight frown, thinking about the strange situation she found herself in.
When Seb asked if she needed anything else she shook her head. "Not for now," she said. "I'll contact you if I need something or something happens."

The captain was still hesitant to leave Ash their side but she couldn't sit by his bedside and neglect everything else. This was one of the moments that made her realise the downsides of hiring a friend as part of her crew. Even now she had to stand above their friendship.
With a sigh she turned to the door. "Wake up fast Ash," she said with her hand at the panel to open the door. She really needed to make an appearence to the rest of the crew.

Gnol let out a half swallowed-curse when Alice yelled. Alan chuckled and was amused by the enthusiasm about bugs.

Gnol smiled when Avia spoke. "I'm sure you could make rocks edible and tasty." he said to Avia.

Alan rolled his eyes at Gnol's remark and nodded to Avia's question. "Essentially useless indeed."
He agreed to Treghor being excited and perhaps Ricki too, if she wasn't too preoccupied with the litter about to be born. Although he couldn't imagine why anyone would get excited over rocks and bugs.
Reluctantly he let go of the subjuect to try and find a reason why the captain would want to go to a useless piece of rock. With bugs. As none of the others seem to want to discuss or question it.

The Dwarf made himself comfortable. "How long till we get there?" he asked.

Alan checked the ComNav. "About twelve hours. Plenty of time to eat, sleep and prepare."

Gnol nodded. "Wonderful, speaking of eating say Avia, what exquisiete meal did you have in mind for us peasants?"

Marigold dashed off to the left, a quick glance over her shoulder made her stumble and almost fell but she half-jumped to keep from falling. She didn't try to look again and only focussed on the path ahead to try and avoid any obstacles. She didn't pay attention to twigs and bushes scratching her and catching her clothes. She just wanted as much room between her and the beast. At first she hadn't payed attention to which direction she was running but she slowed down a bit to try and make out where exaclty she was in the forest. She needed to get home or to the Hunter's family home. Marigold was torn between slowing down to get her bearings and running on to get as far away as possible.
Her breathing got heavier with every step and her side began to ache, leaving her no choise but to slow down.

Panting she looked around to determine which direction was best, she also used the opportunity to listen if she heard anything.

Hazel lifted her eyebrows, questions dancing in her eyes. She wasn't afraid of birds, couldn't imagine anyone be. She followed April inside and looked around. Her eyes darted over the furniture briefly before fixing on the bed in the middle of the room. She opened her mouth to ask about the blankets when she heard the chattering and noticed the figure. With a slight tilt of her head she examined the figure. The blue head and pink eyes were odd, unlike anything she had seen so far.

She was silent and observed, looking from April to the presumable mother of the family. Had her brother been here he would probably already started chatting to the lady, wether she could understand or reply or not. Hazel wasn't like that at all. She gave a slight nod in the direction of the figure.
Sarah nodded to the first question. She glanced at the ranger, she didn't seem overly enthusiast or thrilled by this particular kind of league. Ofcourse, to each their own and Sarah was the last person to judge the likes or dislikes of others but to her a different kind of leagues she was used would be a challenge.

"Doesn't matter wether it's the primary or secondary type. As long as one of the types are water, flying, ground or fire the pokemon is accepted into the league." She replied the easier question as she thought of a reply to the earlier statement.

"While the restriction poses a challenge as you have to really think about the pokemon you might encouter and which you can use, it doesn't limit yourself or your opponent that much. You have to have the right type, but nowhere is it said that you can only use type-specific attacks. If you taught your Mudbray rocksmash you might surprise an opponent with a flying type and a headbut or stomp always hits hard."

While she was talking she was already thinking ahead to how her league might look. She brought herself to the present, up to now she only had one pokemon eligible. "Well perhaps not against ghosts" Sarah admitted with a smile, as the ranger had mentioned ghost trainers. She had to think of Litwick right away, a ghost-type that would qualify for the league.
"You still don't know if your opponent has only water types, or one or more of each type, or one flying and the rest fire. Or what they taught their pokemon. You have to think outside the box and be creative. Use the enviroment to your advantage." Sarah continue.

She thought a while about what was more challenging, being able to use all kind of pokemon and have no idea against what type you would find yourself at all or knowing it would be one of the four types, although not knowing for sure which you would find against you, but knowing your opponent knows what kind of types you have too and both wondering what the other had thought to make the most restriction and get the upperhand. Wether it was a powerful single type or a versitile dual-type.
"I think that within it's limitation, there is a wide range of options to get an advantage over your opponent." Sarah said with a nod.
Sarah listened in all seriousness to the advice and thanked the Ranger for it, especially the part with only coaxing and perhaps not battling got her thinking before she recollected her thoughts about the earlier question about the league.
She had read about the other leagues in other regions and noticed not a lot had special rules like the type restriction on the Rorie Islands, one day perhaps she would spectate some other leagues but first, she wanted to focus on this one. The other leagues seemed easier with no restrictions but she couldn't know for sure yet.

Sarah glanced at the brochure, she had seen it and of course and read it, there was nothing wrong with the brochure and the information was short but correct but she enjoyed explaining it nevertheless.

"The League is themed around the four basic elements. The gyms on Rhando, Indelgy, Ornitan and Resto each represent one of the basic elements, Earth, Wind, Water and Fire. Because it is the theme it is ruled that trainers can only use the types that correspond with the basic elements so ground, flying, water and fire pokemon types are only allowed in the Pokemon League on Evoru. It has been a very long tradition really and the restriction makes it more challenging in my opinion as you can't just randomly catch and use pokemon, you have to think before you act. You know, at first, they only allowed single type pokemon that fit the rules. It's relatively recent in the history of the Rorie Leagues that dual types that have at least one of the four types were allowed. The gyms do allow other pokemon types in their battles though. And you have to be careful, pokemon that evolve and loose one of the allowed types can't continue the battle."

Even though Sarah was more than willing to start a monologue about the entire history of the league and the islands she didn't know if the Ranger was that into local history so she kept at the summary for now with only sporadic sidetracks.

Ok, I'm back and ready to post again. Sorry for the wait everyone but things are smoothing out again.
Good job everyone, I enjoyed reading the entries.

I vote for Interstellar

Of all the entries I liked Interstellar best. It has a nice flow and is very colourful and poetic. I love how it ends on a positive note.

Stars is a very close second, short, sweet and poetic but the — & ... made me prefer Interstellar over Stars.

The Stars& Written in the Stars both are a very nice concept.

I like how The Stars are wardens and the last sentence in the The Stars was really beautiful and speaks to me.

Written in the stars is a good narrative and I enjoyed reading it. Would make an awesome story or a ballad. I could hear a medieval minstrel sing it.

Hood of Shadows is interesting, the X-treme or not to X-treme feels very Shakespearian, but it's a bit chaotic. I can't really find what ties the sentences together and make it a whole.
no, not spinarak, anything but that.

Sorry CirtusArms for not posting as frequent, but at least you can perfect your post while you wait for me.
Duncan cringed a bit at the remarks about skittish horses, his horse was very skittish. He needed to keep the reigns tight and constantly reassure and calm the beast. He missed the horse he had lost. That was a magnificent beast, smart, tough and calm. This horse was untrained and probably still stressed by the events that lead to the demise of his trusted companion. He sighed and patted the neck of his horse, feeling a bit guilty he was comparing the two. The horse couldn't help it either and they would have to make the best of it together. He just hoped that keeping in front and the dragons down the wind would keep his horse from running off.

Gnol chuckled briefly before he listened to the others. "Say, Noble, how are we going to introduce you? full name title and everything?
You know the usual blah. Name, family name, of something, the whatever, from wherever, the umpteenth ruler and so on. What is your long list ceremonial blah introduction? Aren't royalties suppose to have that?"

"Yes, Ma'am," Alan said when Rai told him to sit with Ricki. Alan took Ricki's hand and gracefully climbed on Mercury's back. Alan leaned a bit sideways. "Mercury, if you start to feel pain or more pain, let us know, we don't want to strain you." He wondered just how fast a dragons gallop was and if it was comparable to a horse or a different kind of gait.
He had to feel how the dragon moved to know if he could sit like on a horseback or that he had to take a different position for the best comfort or least amount of pant tearing.

RedClaws immediately followed the other dragons. With his powerful wings, it only took a few beats to get off the ground and a few beats more to catch up. He mostly didn't care what they would or wouldn't find at the Order. A very small part of him did though, there was a little knot of anxiety for what they would find there.
Crreessa was just curious to see where her brothers life had been as rider.
"How far is it?" Shouted Crreessa to get above the noise of the flying dragons and the wind pulling at her words.
Weedle put his tail against Saur's vine. Sarah recalled Weedle and Hoppip with the gentle advice to rest a little.
Saur walked beside Sarah.

Sarah was glad about the caught pokemon, it was her first pokemon that was suited for the league.
"Thank you," she said, "Yes, Hoppip is grass and flying that is why I can really use one for the league with the type-restrictions they have. I was lucky it didn't know any flying-type moves.." Sarah paused as she tried to recollect what she knew about Hoppip to begin with. "I don't think Hoppip know any flying-type moves at all so I guess the type-disadvantage wasn't that big for Weedle."

She looked at the more experienced Ranger. "How did I do in general?" Sarah asked, unsure if someone observing the pokemon battle and catch would see things differently. She felt like she did alright.
She turned her head as she thought she had seen a flash of grey in the corner of her eye but she couldn't see anything so she shrugged it off.
