Absolutely astounded... Blown away. Received the best feedback on any writing piece I've ever done and I honestly have no words to express how good it feels to see the work pay off.

No sign of @Olminu still? /: I'll PM him, this is a two-day warning. :) Just have to hear from him within two days before Grun is fazed out until further notice.
James was both surprised and relieved that the encounter with Sasha had gone off without a hitch. Even the pauses didn't feel too awkward despite how much time apart they'd spent. He felt rather bad about leaving, but they'd been out longer than planned and the night felt like it was reaching an end anyway. Not to mention, he had some good scores to get on Endless Realms tonight. Nathan was staying at James's parents' house, so he had the weekend to himself.

The engineer had a great set-up for his gaming. He had a small study area in his flat. It wasn't his own room, but it was separated from the parlour by an open wall. His computer rig was hooked up on the desk in front of him, as were his headset and VR console. He let out a comforted sigh as he sat down and leaned back, clicking the device on.

Spectre was greeted with the new forum announcement for the Summer's End Quest. He read through the rules, nodded, and swiped the notification away after putting himself into the registry. With a shrug, he gave a quick glance to his surroundings. Yeming, a small city in the Fantasy Zone. Out here, there were few mods and even fewer negative-alignment players. The houses were inexpensive and the goods were low and mid-level crafted items. The Mechanic had a tendency to move through towns like this one, often on the Fantasy side of the world. He had no regrets about his starting class choice, but he quite liked the thrill of blending in over here. He wore little armour, as it provided stealth boosts, and it was made of red leather. Over his shoulders he wore a dark grey cloak with a white 'X' crossed over the back. The hood was pulled up over his head as he walked down the road. Most of the player shops were closed - many were getting to bed. However, it wasn't so late, a few souls wandered the streets with him. Some were shady like him, but others were just at their shops. It wasn't like the town was busy during high-traffic times either, but their goods wouldn't fetch a good price in the major cities. This zone was for the people who played in this level range, so the goods would sell best around here.

Checking the roads north and south, he slipped between a pair of buildings and started checking one particularly for windows. His alignment, while not publicly visible, was mostly Chaotic. It was hard to really put much more of a label on it, as his playstyle was far from consistent. Finally, he found a good spot and pulled out a couple of tools from his inventory, starting to pick at it. As soon as it popped open, he grinned. "Score!"

Over the following couple of weeks, James waited to get his partner and kept in touch with Sasha. Nathan was getting ready for school; the boy was rather autonomous, all things considered, and James was shocked daily by Matt's ability to have raised the child. Levels in Endless Realms moved incredibly slowly, so he actually hadn't advanced much thanks to how little time he had and how much work the game required. Finally, the day came. The registered users were all paired up and James furrowed his brow, "Hm... Fracture? Interesting name. Nice get..." He muttered to himself, dismissing the message. He'd touch base later. Meanwhile, as he walked through the streets of Whispering Village, he sized up the other players around him. While walking through the throngs of people, Spectre would wait for the right, low-level character to pass by before sticking a hand into their pocket. Simultaneously, he would bump into them and just as he walked away from the aghast fellow player, the coin would transfer to his own stash. It wasn't much at all, but to be honest, it gave him a different kind of thrill. Were he caught, it was likely that he'd have all eyes from those around him. He got caught once and they took half the cash he had on him all at once for reparation. It was still pretty god damned fun.

Ding! The little notification rang out and he looked to the upper corner of his screen. A message? From whom? Checking the message, Spectre read it and rubbed his chin. "How nice..." He muttered, furrowing his brow. At first, he'd assumed "Fracture" was a male player, but... based on the mail, there was no way. Finding a seat, Spectre pulled up the interactive keyboard and starting typing away.

Nice to meet you. I'm not too worried about placement, either, but I'd like to at least aim for a ranking of some kind. I'll add you as soon as I get this sent out and sure, I can be in Neutral City. Meet me in a shop called Bogarted Blues - it doesn't see too much business, so it'll be a good meeting spot.

After clicking 'send,' Spectre felt satisfied. It wasn't exactly long-winded, but it got to the point. Bogarted Blues was his store, it wasn't big and it wasn't popular, but it was locked down fairly tightly. It was how he fenced a lot of the little trinkets. He kept it in Neutral City because he didn't want to keep it in the same place which he lived, so Neutral City brought the most business. Sometimes, Spectre got a good score, but mostly it was just some extra goods which were marked way down. The shady origin of the store is why it didn't see many customers, but in all honesty they would face no penalty for the fenced goods.
So, I'm thinking that some of this will be as massive as Eve Online. Like player interaction and laws. The mods don't say "no being mean!" Players can be mean, it's an adult MMO type of game, so I would think a lot of policing and player-rules are enforced by other players, rather than admins and mods. Those with the power in an area, control the rules there. All of this emphasis on the players would lead to a strong, player-run economy. Player-owned stores and properties traded as any other goods and services would be. Breaking into shops, stealing from players... all very possible things that would have to be handled internally. You don't just go "waa, he stole from me" - you gather up a group of players and pay them to take care of it, or get your friends to hunt the guy down, or cut your losses. If it becomes a repeated target, then it can be considered harassment and mods can be called. Otherwise it's just a general casualty of the world. Make sense, or did I hash that up all funny?

EDIT: Ohhh, nevermind, I see that was already part of your post. My bad! :) We'll just go with that. I think we discussed it before anyway, I kinda forgot. ^_^" Maybe the above can be outside of those four major cities/places?

August 11, 2023 – Floor 27

Redbank Beach… Nero took a deep breath in and looked around. The air on Floor 26 was amazing. It had a lot of nighttime themes, too. The day was split into three parts, despite its somewhat ambiguous science. There was an eight hour sunrise, eight hour sunset, and an eight hour night. Ne’er a day passed with a sun directly overhead. A lot of the cities already displayed what one would think were common of the night elves often found in fantasies. These floors were his favorites – the ones that had particularly special attributes. The sand here changed colours with the time of day too – in the morning, it was a soft, golden yellow. When the sun moved to the other side of the floor, it shifted into a warm orange. At night, when the sky was dark, it was hard to tell which colour the ground turned, but the sand of Redbank still glimmered beautifully.

Nero wore a pair of green and black swimming trunks with a towel draped over his shoulders. Right now, the sun was setting. Of course, there were still several hours of daylight left before darkness fell and the real party would begin. He and Suto had planned this over a week ago – they all needed it. The twenty-sixth floor was impossible to enjoy… Even though they were all alive, there was still plenty of drama. By now, many of their friends had learned to cope with Yari’s memory loss and they were getting to know her new self. Nero had to admit, he was really impressed by Suto’s support for Yari; he couldn’t imagine the kind of hell it had to be to see this girl, with the same face, who said she wasn’t the same girl he’d apparently known for years.

This place was actually considered a safe zone, so it was a popular spot for those who could fight their way through the floor to the beach. While there were no stores or buildings, one could see players up and down the entire shore of the lake. Their group found a small spot for themselves and were setting up their place on the edge. Yuna offered to do it for him, completely convinced that he lacked the organization to set up an umbrella and some towels. Whatever, she just liked things her way and to be honest? She always set them up so perfectly, anyway…

Yuna wore a pure white tankini with a skirted pair of bottoms. As she swept the hair from her face and placed her hands on her hips, she surveyed their location. “I’m not sure if this is quite right…” She mused before furrowing her brow and looking around. Nero’s jaw dropped.

“You’re kidding! We spent like… fifteen minutes looking for this spot! And you picked it out!” He exclaimed, his face falling into his palm.

She sighed, “Fine, I guess it’ll do…” With a wave of her hand, she opened her menu and started to set up the things that she and Nero brought with them.

Nero looked to Suto, “Hey, she said she’s not sure if she’s coming, but I invited Makoto too. You two seemed to hit it off, I thought she’d have a good time, anyway…”

-----

Yari was dressed in a purple one-piece with white highlighting. When Nero and Suto had first brought this idea to her, she was a bit… apprehensive. She still felt a bit awkward around the others, like they were all trying to see the “her” that rested behind those golden eyes. But she wasn’t there, not the Yari that they knew, though she tried very hard to meet their expectations on that front. Still, there were things she couldn’t remember and now and then, many of them slipped with a ‘remember that time…’ and she couldn’t help but fidget. The only thing that got her here was that today was supposed to be about relaxing and to mark their official moving forward as a group. The thought alone brought a smile to her face.

She ran up behind Yuna as Nero just about broke under the pressure of her perfectionism. “Yuna, dear, this is fine, isn’t it?”

“I guess so… I’m sure there’s somewhere better…”

“No, no, look… We can get the fire pit ready over there… And oh! Look at the way the water rolls in right there… Here’s how you gotta look at it…” Yari haphazardly tossed her towel out and sat on it, looking at the water, “See? You can’t get the right impression of the view from way up there. But trust me, it’s perfect down here!” She beamed, much to the relief of Nero, who was glad that Yari was able to calm down his OCD girlfriend so easily.

“Suto!” Yari called out, straightening her towel, “You and Fitch set up over here too, alright? Don’t go wandering off!”

-----

Fitch sighed as they finally found a spot to slow down. He didn’t really want to be here anyway. Yari and he had decided a few weeks ago to divvy up their inventory and break the marriage, at least until her memory came back. It wasn’t fair and the number of slots he had available for loot seemed painfully small. Besides, he only came because Suto pretty much forced him. That wasn’t Yari, but she tried ot be their friend anyway. Why didn’t she just go and find her own friends? Wasn’t this weird for everybody else? Why didn’t they seem to even care? Yari, his Yari, was dead.

He crossed his arms, looking out across the beach. SAO did not have a lot of pretty women, this was true… But they were all over this beach. He missed Yari.

When the girl called for Suto at first, he had to physically restrain himself to keep from rolling his eyes. Sure, because he’s such a good friend… And the boss of me, so just have him move me around, don’t just ask me to do something… Whatever…

"Full house!" The Ydra declared, flashing her cards before she pulled the coin to herself from the table. Her teeth were a brilliant white as she smiled, "Next round on me, guys, c'mon."

It was like a harem of drunken men sat around the table with her, scratching their heads. They were all doing so well earlier! What happened? One of them stared at her skeptically, like the gears in his head were turning. "Aha! I figured it out..."

Asta blinked, raising an eyebrow, "E-eh? Figured what out, my good man?"

"We started out doing really good tonight... And now you're winning. I know you're secret!" He grinned, proud of himself, his words holding a light slur as he looked to his mates. "She thinks 'cuz we're drinkin' that we ain't gonna focus!"

The nomad had to keep herself from sighing in relief and opted to feign guilt. "Oh, drat... Guess my game is up, fellas. One more round, now that you've figured me out?" They all laughed a bit too loudly at her teasing before collectively declining her offer. No, they'd lost enough money tonight. Asta heard the barmaid call after some young man who was leaving before feeling the giantess's eyes on her. Oh, crap. She tried to shovel the coin into her bag in a hurry as the woman came from around the bar. Asta could almost swear she felt the ground shaking as she was approached.

"Oi, little Ydra rat," She snarled, "Thought I told ye that you weren't allowed to be gamblin' with them stakes anymore?"

Asta shook her head, "N-no, you misunderstand! They wanted to play with that much!"

The woman crossed her arms, "They're drunk. And by taking coin from their hands, you're stealing drinks from their mouths, and so that's coin you're stealing from me," She argued gruffly. "I told you max buy-in was a few copper pieces - a pot no higher than a silver at a time, and here you are, taking every ounce of metal they could've carried. Besides, I'm tired of seeing this little act... Every night it's 'oh, how am I ever going to win my money back?' and then suddenly you're in the most expensive inn we have in town... You've a bit more than luck on your side, missy. Now take your buy-in and stop harassing my customers," She threatened.

Asta was a Magi, she didn't have to take this. On the other hand, the barmaid was big... and the girl wanted to keep her profile low. She gave an annoyed "hmph!" And pulled her share from the bag before giving the rest of the coin back. "I cheated anyway," She confessed, grabbing her bow from the ground beside her and slinging it over her back.

The maid was far from surprised, "Duh." The rest of the men at the table, however, were appalled. Void magic made cheating at cards the easiest thing in the world, so long as you knew how it worked. She started poorly, but gradually saved good cards and traded them out in her hands. Took a bit of finagling, but patience was a virtue when it came to nabbing coin off of drunken gamblers. Too bad, she was excited for them to go home to angry wives who begged the question 'why weren't you at work?!'

Collecting her things, she left the tavern with an ounce of dignity, only to feel an animal dart between her legs, barking. "Myria!" She shouted as the Cobra Fox took off after a little girl and a moorcat tearing through the crowd. Her eyes shifted over, wasn't that the kid who was sitting in the bar staring at a map for the past half hour? Did he even figure it out, or did he leave after getting too frustrated? It didn't particularly matter. Asta put her fingers to her lips and whistled sharply; the sound was almost ear-piercing. Myria stopped in her tracks, "Get back here. You know better."

She didn't even have to look to know that the fox was at her side once again, a small twinge in her heart as she felt the scolded animal's shame. However, without acknowledging the white-haired boy from the inn, she went on her own way. At first, she'd thought he was Ydran - but a closer look revealed her was an awkward, disproportionate human. Euch. A better question was where she would stay tonight; she certainly didn't want to stay in this village much longer? It was starting to feel stuffy anyway.

A few blocks and turns later, she saw a crowd parting and opening itself up. Weaseling her way to the front, she laid eyes on an unfamiliar scene. It wasn't uncommon that Divined would be harassed anymore, there was once a time when people were respectfully at their beckoning call; the world was changing so quickly, however. Distrust even filled the eyes of those that faced Asta, but she also held an air of superiority about her. The part that was unfamiliar was how proud of her heritage this Divined was. In fact, she didn't cover up out of shame or to hide herself, she wore her identity proudly. Admirable, but foolish. Asta pulled her hood up and pulled her cloak around her shoulders... This was going to be interesting.
