Huh. So much flattery for Simon. I should write in birds ascending to the skies as his feet touch the ground while the light of the sun beams behind him in every introducing scene. XP
So there are things a Arch Magi doesn't know, Travis thought as he observed Felix speaking out about the Paragon's innate ability and its only use through runic formulas. The more then learned about the Paragon, the more finicky it became to truely understand it or even use it. So far, they've proven that the Paragon, or at least Espial uniquely, would try to rob them of their mana if they tried to perform the same service on the crystal, thus making it very impractical as a power source for a spell. The only thing it seemed to be useful for was simply as the catalyst for a runic spell. While the notion didn't seem all that complex, Travis was hesitant to immediately test the theory in fear of misstep or negative response from the Paragon given its known vampiric behavior.

He watched once more Felix tried something else to the Paragon in order to tap into its function. It appeared Felix had suppressed his mana flow and attempted to concentrate on the Paragon but it was to no available. Espial didn't respond, at least not immediately. The Arch Mage commented how Thadeus could potentially figure out the Paragon had he been hear within different circumstances. It was at the moment Felix's eyes turned to nothing but white and remained motionless, almost lifeless even despite him standing in place. The sudden change nearly made Travis jump but he retained his demeanor before using his manalysis once more. Like last time, the Espial's aura had surrounded him but the fluid nature and behavior of the aura seemed calmer and less evident to sap Felix of his mana.

It wasn't long until Felix returned to normal except of for a now surprised expression painted on his face. Felix almost sounding frantic, explained that he had witnessed Thadeus and a group of medics attending to one of the fallen combatants from earlier. Travis avoided recording that piece of information but took notes on how Felix determined how he able to tap into the Paragon's talent.

"Sounds like you had a vision." Travis commented though didn't expect Felix to reply to it.

Felix eventually concluded the tests for the evening, establishing how late and it before actually "ordering" Travis to hit the sack. The Untalent would object but after sabotaging himself the morning before for his night owl research, he had little to contend with against the request. Bummer.

"Aye, will do." Travis replied before making his way up the stair case and towards his quarters.
Travis knew immediately what Felix was going to describe once he drew out his diagram on the white board. Felix began to describe much of the basis with innate mana wells and the use of mana crystals, namely blue quartzs due to their reliability. Eventually he then walked through the the process of mana transfusion and what Travis could identify as reaping or more plainly, stealing. While he already knew much of this, the went ahead and jotted the notes down in correlation to the observation made on their experiment; on the plus side, it never hurt for a simple review and brainstorming new ideas.

"Hmph...So much for trying to use it as a battery," Travis frowned upon hearing Felix declaring that the Paragon could not be used with spell. He too gazed at the Paragon without his manalysis to ponder the facts presented to them.

After a brief moment of thought, he recalled a previous briefing made by Felix.

"Then again...way before we left for the catacombs, you mentioned there was feasible evidence that the earlier Enlisters of the Societas Academia somehow used the Paragon in order to recruit capable students, well before reverse engineering the means to do so today without it. How'd they get Espial to cooperate without sapping them?"
@awkwarddingo Awesome!

@ShiningSector The return of Simon and Spectre... Can we expect another low orbit entry?

Yeah...getting blown out of the sky, deep in enemy territory, and having to murder everything vaguely humanoid.
@Apollosarcher Awesome to see another familiar face. =)
Gleeful anticipation filled Travis as Felix agreed to begin conducting tests on the Paragon. He watched as Felix sat the container containing the ancient mana crystal within it on to a claw-like stand before opening and reaching in to take the Paragon out. he then explained that their first step was to see if it behaved like a regular mana crystal as it appeared and could act as a medium to help cast a spell. The logic of the test made sense as it allowed them how the Paragon could be used outside of its innate capabilities. While Travis was familiar with the concept of using mana crystals in such a way, it had previously never occurred to him how it might actually prove helpful, now that there was a now guaranteed chance in going into a fight again. As such, he pulled his notepad out and wrote a small memo to look into the subject more before making a full page ready for the imminent experiment.

Once advised of what Felix will be doing, Travis nodded and summoned his manalysis and prepared to record their findings. Felix then clutched the Paragon with both hands and began to interface with the Paragon with his own mana in an attempt to create a standard light spell. Without being overwhelmed like everyone else who used the manalysis to examine it, he was careful not to make direct eye contact with the Paragon lest he be overwhelmed himself and instead focused on what occurred between the auras of Felix and the Paragon Espial.

He watched as Felix's aura begin to tap into the Paragon for it to draw the sufficient mana needed to the spell. Initially, everything was transpiring as if a normal transaction would would make with using a regular mana crystal as a medium. But then the Paragon began to respond with its own aura expanding and then surround Felix as is he was within the maw of a large creature. Even more startling was the Paragon's own purplish aura began to slither around and taking hold of Felix's white glow as seen through Travis' manalysis as if to consume this.

Before Travis could vocally interject to Felix about the ill-occurring matter, the Arch-Mage, seemingly aware of the same thing to a degree, erratically tossed the Paragon crystal to the side. The action was almost enough to make Travis jump. Of course it was not out of the sudden movement but merely the sudden rough handling of the mana crystal though Travis quickly came to the conclusion that the Paragon was quite durable to say the least.

Felix then turned to Travis and apologized, explaining how the Paragon was seemingly trying to absorb all of his inner most mana and he pulled away before he was sapped dry; literally, "Definitely doesn't seem all that friendly if you ask me."

Travis looked over his notes transcribing the incident before filling Felix in about this observation, "Assimilated could be a proper term to explain what you encountered...but from my angle, it looked as if the Paragon's aura was literally trying to swallow you whole. In another explanation, I think it was trying to tap into you the same way you were doing to it."
"Incoming! Get behind me, now!"

A swelling surge of condensed Arc energy vomited forth from an assaulting Hive Knight's Boomer and made headway for a group of organised Guardians. The Fireteam comprised of four wielders of the Traveler's Light though each was uniquely special in their own right. There was Zack, a recently reborn Gunslinger Hunter whom also as of late, learned of his key talent of the Golden Gun. Howl-23, a Warlock whom also had been just days ago blessed and imbued with revitalizing Light back into his near-human inner works had quickly grasped the concepts of the devastating Void infused Nova Bomb; a feared skill only native to the Voidwalkers. Then there was Sonya the Titan, while also being relatively new to her contemporary life as a Guardian had already mastered her innate abilities as a Striker; specifically the fearsome Fist of Havoc.

But the forth member of the group was far more experienced and intimidating in physical being compared to his newborn counterparts and was perhaps the sole factor of attention the Knight and its own cronies of Acolytes and Thralls were more concerned with. Simon was also a Guardian and a Titan as well but unlike his troupe of recruits still wearing nothing but their durable bodysuits and scavenged cloth and robes their own Ghosts had put together, he was fully armored from head to toe, seals and insignias of the Vanguard and the Lords of the Iron Banner engraved into the finely shaped Plasteel covering his body.

Just before the Arc-based mortar could connect, Simon summoned the Light within him and casted a great dome of Void energy around his team, known as the Ward of Dawn. The round fired from the Knight's Boomer impacted the bubble and dispersed harmlessly as it's own energies were converted and then generated into Orbs of Lights. In stubborn frustration, the Hive doubled their efforts and charged forward at the seemingly trapped, discharging more Arc mortars and now Void darts at the Defender's barrier as a swarm of Thrall made a mad dash for the Guardians, the lanky and skeletal-like abominations hungry for their Light.

"On my signal, back out of the bubble as fast as you can! I'm going to bring them all in one spot. Understood?" said Simon while he maintained his Ward of Dawn.

"Yes, sir!" the other Guardians respectively confirmed in unison.

Despite their own decrepitness, the Thralls were ever-surprisingly nimble and in no time were already on top of the barrier, lunging at the Guardians within and wanting nothing more but to tear them apart.

"Now!" ordered Simon once the first Thrall's hideous maw phased through the Ward.

Zack quickly Blinked out from existance while Howl-23 and Sonya jumped out with haste, leaving only Simon as the bubble's only occupant and dish to the hungry Thralls. But what the Hive didn't know what they they were the ones who were trapped. Almost immediately, the violet light brimming from Simon's heavily plated earthborn Centurion-like helm glowed intensely and so did the Ward of Dawn until its Light radiated in the same likeness as a star. The nearby Thralls and Acolytes screeched in displeasure as their eyes were overloaded by the untamable light before them, halting their attack where as the Knights in the rear shielded their faces, unable to fight with the current state of affairs against them.

While the minions of the Hive were stunned, Simon dematerialized the Ward of Dawn and raised his Pulse Rifle up and took aim. "They're stunned, this is your chance! Finish them off!"

The Guardian recruits gladly replied as they summoned their Light powered abilities and unleashed them upon the still flinching living-husks of the Hive. Sonya leaped into the horde of Thralls with Arc lighting dazzling from her combined fists and slammed into the earth, destroying rock and bone alike as her Fist of Havoc went off like a thunderclap that echoed throughout Cosmodrome Rocket Yard. Howl-23 too jumped into the air and with a menacing sphere of swirling Void energy formed in his hands, the Exo Warlock casted the the terrifying Nova Bomb upon the line of Acolytes who were too late to react after recovering from their blindness and soon were vaporized after the Nova Bomb made contact. Zack as quick as ever, ignited his own Handcannon with Solar energy, infusing the conventional weapon with fiery Light and fired the Golden Gun. Intense streams of Solar spewed forth from the muzzle and shot right through the carnage and nailed three Knights in their weathered skulls, instantly incinerating them upon contact.

Simon was a tad surprised on how the recruits were able to respond and utilize their specials talents in such efficient ways; he never got to even pull the trigger of his Pulse Rifle the moment he gave the attack order. As the ash and dust cleared there was nothing remaining of the Hive force. In fact, for the moment, the entire Rocket Yard had been cleansed of its alien violators as savaged Hive husks and broken Fallen bodies laid unmoving across the snow and rust covered landscape.

"All hostiles have been eliminated. Good job you three!" Cipher, Simon's personal Ghost announced as the tiny machine materialized into reality, "I'll call in the strike order. Commander Zavala will be most pleased that another Strike Team was able to reach their objective on time."

Just after Cipher's sentence had ended, the roaring engines of three Jumpships entering the local airspace came overhead, the shadows of the large craft quickly past over the ground as three new heavily armed Guardians and their Sparrows quickly came into view, having been beamed down from their individual Jumpships. The trio sped by the accomplished Fireteam without a word but had saluted and even waved to them before making their way to their time critical objective.

"Well, that was fun," Zack humorously commented, "May we do it again?"

"I'm not sure if being surrounded by Light craving skeletons is what you should consider, 'fun'." retorted Howl-23.

"You're right Howl, but breaking them sure is!" Sonya optimistically replied.

"That's true." the Exo agreed.

"I'm confident we'll have more tasks like this at hand eventually," said Simon as he stowed his Auto Rifle to the magnetic seal on his back panel, "But I think this should do for the day. Let's head back to the Tower shall we? Drinks on me, how about that?"

The recruits looked at eachother briefly and happily nodded in unison.

After departing from the group of recruits so that they could attend their next set of errands and responsibilities, Simon himself had satisfied his schedule for the day and was heading towards his own quarters until Cipher had stopped following him and floated neatly in place to which Simon was quick to notice.

"Something up, Cipher?" Simon asked as he turned to his Ghost.

"Yeah, I got a message from Commander Zavala. He wants us to meet him down at the Vanguard Hall." Cipher replied.

Simon stared blankly at Cipher, briefly turning around back where the recruits were before and then back at the Ghost, "Haven't we already satisfied the training quota for today?"

"Erm, yes. We have," the Ghost responded as if slightly taken back by Simon's gesture, "But this is a priority request. Sounds bigger than the daily usual. Even got a roster with higher ranking Guardians on it. I'd bet a few Glimmer this is some kind of Strike operation."

"Suppose that's fair. Anything more to it?"

"Afraid not. We'll have to go to the Vanguard Hall to learn more details. The usual red tape."

With a faint sigh, Simon pulled away from his original path his quarters and set course to the Vanguard Hall, "Well, let's get going then see what this is all about.
After the debriefing Travis has laid out as asked, Felix surprisingly seemed more intrigued about their encounter with the golem and mused about the Paragon's observed functionality with fueling other spells aside from its natural abilities rather than the scuffle with Thadeus and his team. Travis couldn't help but wonder if Felix had any sort of hunch of Thadeus' eventual involvement with their operation or it was quite simply he had already figured the motive upon engaging Thadues and was focusing on other matters. Whichever the case may have been, it was then Felix waved Travis over to follow him and Travis did comply.

Felix and Travis came to a basement that Travis had recalled Artos taking temporary residence in before they departed for the Paragon of Espial. Stepping by what appeared to be a generator powered by mana crystals to which Travis briefly pondered how efficient the energy output the crystals could generate, Felix reached and and pulled on a mana torch which in turn resonated a series of mechanical clicking sounds. The undecorated wall adjacent to the false torch had then begun to shift and pull inward with a bright light casting out of the new entrance and a new flight of stairs. It was evident now to Travis that this was a secret room Felix was keeping hidden; but for what purpose?

Down the stars they went with Felix at the front and into very elaborate and complex laboratory, complete with a wide array of devices and tools necessary to test and create new magics. Or to study a newly obtained Paragon which Felix soon verified that the mana crystals constructed into the walls and other safeguards would prevent the Paragon's massive mana wave emissions from leave the residence. Travis quickly became eager to bring his own research equipment down to this new and productive environment to begin studying but remained firm for the moment in order to reply to Felix's query for his opinion of the installation.

"It brilliantly constructed." complemented Travis, "Far more efficient that what I had going in Mexico. I definitely look forward now in expanding my projects but I suppose the better question is; when do we start studying ol' Espial there?"
@Cottonmouth Got the latest update for Destiny? Pretty big one and adds a few new things too.
Felix's encouragement and reassurance was gratifying enough and eased the tension it could. But nothing could easily diminish the thoughts and memories of their decent into the ancient pre-Academia catacombs; that will remain for years if he were to survive this entire fated mission. At the very least, he expressed some revilement and took a seat in one of the couches and relaxed as much as he psychically could.

While Nemo and Raiya unwinded in their own ways, he listened to Felix explaining the purpose of a container he had produced and placed the Paragon within its confines, leaving it positioned on the table as if another fixture within the mansion. He explained that the case the Paragon now resided in dampened the Paragon's massive emission of mana waves which prevented it was being tracked. It made sense and Travis was sure enough thankful they could contain such a desired artifact without attracting the wrong kind of attention.

It was then Felix requested of Travis to debrief him of the events that unfolded once they found the Paragon. With a quick look to his left, Nemo and Raiya seemed to pay no mind to their conversation as if they were disinterested or they were simply efficient in minding their activities and listening at the same time. With a faint sigh, Travis began, "...After dealing with our last trap, we had arrived in the Paragon's chamber where we found it at the center of the room at the apex of an assemblage of rubble. That was also when we lost contact with you."

"Nemo went to retrieve it but the rubble had then amassed and turned into a golem by the Paragon's power. With our combined efforts..." Travis eyed Nemo and then Raiya before a split moment before following up, "...we were successful in dispatching it and claiming the Paragon."

"Before we could leave though, Thadeus and his group intercepted us..."

Travis paused and leaned forward and gave a faint expression hinted with bewilderment and annoyance, "...I am not sure if his strange behavior comes naturally but he had forced us into combat with his team. Raiya went against Dominick and Dawn Fullbright. Nemo fought with Nevar and I against Alya Summers."

Travis only gave the names of their opponents believing Felix might recognize a name or two. Of course whether he did or not was of little consequence for the most part.

"At that point, I can only recall most of my battle with Alya as Thadeus erected several wall-like arenas around us individually so we couldn't help each other or stay in any contact. It was perhaps only after that until you eventually intervened."
