Quan Nguyen

Meticulous fingers danced across the glowing keyboard as each press clacked the keys in a mechanical sound, followed by the scrolling and clicking of a mouse.

"Jesus, Quan, can that thing be any louder?"

Quan's hand wiped against his eyelids as the monitor lit up the dim room, his shadow drawn against the wall behind him. He shifted his head slightly to the right, seeing Ryan pull the blanket over his head and shift against the wall. Running a hand through his hair, Quan turned back to the monitor and skimmed over the numbers at the corner of his desktop — 8:33 AM, 12/26/15. He still had over a week until his winter recess would come to an end, and he would have to return to the bedlam of the classroom.

Ryan had been given another day off — the automobile shop he worked at was closed for "some British thing", his brother said. Normally, Dan, his other older brother who served in the military, would have also been home for the holidays, but he had called a month in advance to tell them that his unit was going to Mexico for something; it was the last call they got from him. Quan scrolled through the forum he frequented that devoted itself to "shedding light on the information hidden from the general public by the government", drumming his finger against the mouse through the music playing through his headphones.

All throughout the forum, there were only articles and pictures that pertained to the global H1N1 outbreak; soldiers and police armed to the teeth, backed by tanks and other military vehicles, lining the streets of some foreign country, bodies of victims in blood-stained clinics, and the like. People flocked the threads and discuss all of the rumors as the most prominent phrases are "zombie apocalypse" and "H1N1 coming back to life".

Quan bit the side of his mouth as his door swung open in a loud manner, and his mother trudged inside. As he quickly closed out of the browser, she walked over to the window and threw the curtains to the side, the morning sun causing Quan to recoil from its sheer brightness.

"Brush your teeth and go downstairs," she looked between him and Dan, his brother groaning from underneath the covers through his hangover. "And you," she focused her eyes directly onto Quan, stomping by his table as she reached and turned off his monitor, also making sure to remove his headphones. "Get off the computer! It's all I see you do."

Quan glared at the surface of the table, breathing heavily through his noise. "Yes, Mom," he replied in quiet Vietnamese. It was strange how the language always made it seem like the speaker was angry, much like Spanish. He heard Dan grumble from the corner of the room as he rose from his chair, walking back to his bed that stood opposite of his brother's bed and tidying up the covers.

After doing so, Quan saw that Dan was still in bed. "Come on," he nudged the form underneath the blanket. "Mom's gonna be pissed if we don't come down now."

"Later. I'm not hungry," his brother complained.

Quan sighed, scratching his back as he left the room and entered the bathroom to brush his teeth and wash his face. Feeling that it was too much effort to make himself look presentable, he left his hair in its state and quietly climbed down the stairs to the dining room table.

Name:
Quan Nguyen

Age:
Eighteen years old

Gender:
Male

Family:

  • An Nguyen — Father †
  • Linh Nguyen — Mother
  • Dan Nguyen — Brother
  • Ryan Nguyen — Brother

Pre-Outbreak Occupation:
Student

Personality:
Quan is a shadow of society, distancing himself from its members more often than not. With few friends and many "associates", his introverted nature is facilitated by his general lack of interest in most things. Quan rarely attempts to stand out in a crowd, though sometimes, it backfires and attention is directed towards him anyway. Regardless of what he calls "unnecessary attention", he is soft-spoken and thoughtful, even in his shyness.

Biography:
Quan was not always the depressive, reserved individual that he is now; there was a time when he was like the other adult's children, enjoying youth with friends and the like. Born in Buras, Louisiana, he was the energetic youngest son that his family poured all their love and resources into, though his parents had already been divorced before his birth. Two years down the line, the family eventually separated from one another, with Quan and his two older brothers moving to Philadelphia with their mother. During elementary school, they would learn that his father perished from Hurricane Katrina's devastating path through their former home state.

In Pennsylvania, Quan lived a happy childhood and grew up a healthy child, growing taller than his family members by the time he was in middle school. He was notorious for being a troublemaker throughout the years, proud to be one of the "popular kids" as he spent late nights playing video games and moving onto other hobbies in high school. During his sophomore year, Quan befriended a girl named Julia who was two years older than him and ran away from her parents' home, and the two began seeing one another soon after.

It was evident that Julia was suffering from her own personal demons, but whenever Quan attempted to soothe her, she would state that nothing was wrong. Worrying about prying too much, he decided to not pursue the issue persistently. This decision would change almost every aspect of Quan for the rest of his life afterwards; at the end of the school year, when he went to the usual spot that he and Julia would hang out, he only found a letter that said she was ending her life. Unable to believe it, he searched for her, even traveling to the southern parts of the state on one occasion and looking. After days of searching, Julia's letter proved to be true; people discovered a girl's body washed up in the Delaware River near the Ben Franklin Bridge.

From this point on, Quan withdrew himself from society; he cut off almost all of his activities and relationships with friends, and locked himself in his room, confiding in his longtime hobby of playing video games. During his junior and senior years, he has been at odds with his family because of his lack of preparation for his future, and is constantly threatened to be kicked out onto the streets.

Like most people who invested a large amount of time into video games and the Internet, Quan was no stranger to the zombie threat, and instantly recognized the virus as the comings of a zombie apocalypse when the leaks came through that it was bringing the dead back to life.

Disabilities / Fears:
Quan suffers from a moderate case of depression, and has not made the initiative to seek help. As a result, he can become extremely volatile in times of heavy stress and pressure, often lashing out on others in physical and verbal abuse if his emotions remain bottled for long periods of time. He is claustrophobic, and shows anxiety being around many people.

Weapon(s):
For now, a pocket knife that Quan always had in case he would need to protect himself.

Supplies:
Typical items — his wallet that contains money, identification, and a picture of him and Julia. He also has his cell phone.

Altan

"Heh, good point."

Altan wondered if any of the Laguz around the camp could sense his presence as a fellow member of their race. A feature that the Beorc could possibly observe that would make them come to the conclusion that he was Laguz was his height; not many Beorc were two meters tall.

Though, that was where the line was drawn. Altan no longer possessed his bear ears, the ones that Leena had found a habit in playing with. No trace of his Laguz blood was openly obvious, but it did not bother him too much. He was still as strong and capable in his human state. He extended his hand out towards the great fire and stared at the back of his palm, closing and opening his fist as veins rippled beneath his knuckles.

Altan drew a long yawn, the corner of his eye focused on Jix as he looked into the flame. "This large expedition is pointless," he laid back against the grass, the cool earth matching the breeze. "Nobody cares about the tribes. I'll bet the soldiers are just flirting with the flock of hens."

"And what about you, Altan?" Jix turned from the female, standing beside him.

Altan rolled onto his stomach, rising to his feet with his back to his overseer. "Maybe some other time."

Jix Moros

After seeing that Altan did not wish to talk about it, Jix returned to Aelia and apologized for cutting off their conversation abruptly. "Jax is a quiet one," he said. "But he got sharp as a prod when he argued with my folks. He's a good kid, though; always gentle when it came to handlin' things around home."

"It's late, sweetie. You should-"

"As if she didn't notice, already?" Altan interjected from behind.

The commotion around the camp had grown more silent, with light chatter now joined by the sounds of people settling into the tents or sleeping. Jix cleared his throat, wearing his helmet. "You should find yourself a place, I'll handle your horse."

"I got it," Pogs suddenly emerged from the outer confines of the camp, taking the reins and beginning to guide the mount away from the fire. "The cap'n wants you to speak with him, Jix; methinks you should get there in a swift."

Shaking his head and letting out a small laugh, Jix began to wipe away any potential blemishes on his green armor. "You have yourself a good night, Aelia." He turned from the woman, walking off into the camp.
