‘That, I have heard,’ agreed Vicis. ‘But I was under the impression that that was a mechanism created with humans in mind. Among other mortal creatures, that is. But you were born - or however you were made - in Hell, yes? One would think you would have the upper hand over the mortals cast down there.’

Truth be told, he was not unaware of the discomfort this topic seemed to bring Damien. The fidgeting and the avoidant gaze were easy tells. Still, as charming as he found the baphomet to be, Vicis was not so considerate that he would put aside his own curiosity for politeness’ sake.

This was Hell they were talking about. He might never be granted the opportunity again!

same, a week is good for me since I've realised that's generally the speed I take to cycle thru the replies I owe ppl 👍🏼 and if I'm bogged down by external factors, I'll usually remember to say smtg. unless I don't 😭 anw yes feel free to poke me

Also! I think I've figured out a way to write three characters w/o losing my sanity. it's a good opportunity to stretch my third-person omniscient muscles, which is great bc I'm p sure I almost always default to limited third-person and Idk how to break out of it 😔 (I'm p sure my post is exactly this but oh well. I'll try again next time.)

I don't mind to take her over at some point, but especially for this first adventure it's nice if she is out.

CLOVER

with POMNI and ZOOBLE

One moment Clover’s in his bed, the next he’s drifting towards the floor with the colourful roof of the main circus tent stretching far above him. Nearby, he can hear the ever-familiar bleep that came with someone cursing.

‘Caine! You seriously couldn’t wait for us to get here ourselves first?!’

Just another day of that sweet Circus life. He’d been in the middle of a nice dream, too. It had Chunky and... well, most of the dream is quickly fading from his digital mind, but he’d felt the fur, real fur in his real hands. He misses fingers.

Pomni leans over him.

‘You okay?’

‘Peachy.’ He keeps his eyes fixed on the ceiling. Not that it matters with his lack of pupils. ‘I’m fine staying on the floor.’

Her response to that is a raised eyebrow and a held-out hand. Clover sighs. Clasping a leaf around her glove, he lets her pull him up to his... leaves. Biology really doesn’t have any place here.

Seems like most everyone else is here already. Zooble is already upset with Caine – which must be a record considering they’ve all been out of their rooms for a grand total of two seconds – but they’re shifting their focus to Jax, glaring at him like they’ve caught him doing something without having even seen him do it. It’s then Clover spots Gangle’s broken mask.

Ah. The usual.

There’s Pomni, of course, and Kinger, and Patch, and... he’s almost sure that they’re missing a couple of people. Pomni seems to have noticed the same thing, but Snix storming off has her pivoting towards him.

‘Snix, hang on. Don’t you at least want to find out why we’re here in the first place?’ she says. ‘Caine’s just going to teleport you back here if you leave now.’

Sound logic. Snix seems to be in a mood, though, and Clover, not keen on being caught in the crossfire, shuffles over to Patch.

‘Hey,’ he says in quiet greeting.

Teresa’s Catharsis

Friends. Now there was a complicated topic. As Sirpa talked, Teresa contemplated not answering.

Being a hero wasn’t a round the clock thing, not in Providence. The council liked claiming to promote work-life balance among their heroes – it made for good PR – but their monitoring of what the heroes did in their downtime was an open secret. It made keeping to yourself the easier choice. The morally correct choice, even. Protecting their identities meant they could serve their city, and what was a hero who didn’t make sacrifices to protect others?

Funny how they’d turned out to be protecting people from their own mess the whole time.

Oh, fuck it.

Teresa tipped her glass until it drained empty.

‘Sure,’ she said, in the expectant silence that followed Sirpa's answer. ‘He tried to kill me, but we’re good now. He was just doing his job, y’know? I might’ve done the same a couple years back.’ She waved a hand. ‘So. You know. Communication’s good.’

She waved a hand again, mostly to get the server’s attention. She needed–no, she wanted another drink. A few more wouldn’t hurt in this place that seemed adamant on keeping her here. Was this the thing she was supposed to do to leave? Talk things out? She didn’t see the point in hashing her business out with people who barely knew her, but... Westbound had probably felt the same. He’d made it out. Maybe she should take a page from his book.

...Easier said than done.
