Sam sighed and he rubbed his chin. He had forgotten to shave that morning, well whenever the last time he had access to a razor. They needed to get the gun but they simply couldn't just walk out there without something happening to them. They needed to send someone who was fast, someone who wouldn't get hurt or caught by whatever was out there.

His eyes scanned the people in the diner. They were all a patch work group that wouldn't have mingled prior to this event. Sam stopped when his eyes landed on his sister and Avery. He couldn't sacrifice someone to save the others; it wasn't his place to choose who would go and who would stay. He placed his head in both hands and let out another low sigh. The two had a point, it would be necessary to have a gun to protect the group. They had pots and pans but those might not work. His eyes went to the darkness outside. It seemed like it was pressed against the windows, waiting.

A soft hand on his shoulder made him tear his gaze from the darkness. His sister was smiling widely at him, the crayons and napkins lying discarded on the table. "Avery had to use the bathroom." she said before settling herself in the chair next to her brother. "I couldn't help but overhear...it would be good to get our hands on an actual weapon...but going out there is suicide." She bit her lip and for the first time since the darkness had settled around them, she looked outside. There was nothing.

"I know but it's our best bet and maybe we can find out what's going on here...and how to get out of this mess." Sam said as he brought her into a one-armed hug.

"It feels weird, doesn't it?" Rowena said as she stood up. "Like something is out there. Watching. Waiting."

Sam didn't quite understand his sister. He was never the best at following his instincts. He was the type of person who relied heavily on facts and evidence rather than his feelings. Avery came back from the bathroom, tugging on the short sleeve of Rowena's shirt. The woman excused herself before going back to the table with Avery. Her eyes would wander to the window every so often before settling on the task before her. Maybe it was a suicide mission but if they could get the gun back then maybe everyone would feel a little safer.

"I'll go." Jeff Waters, Avery's older brother and part of the Rosswood High School football team, spoke up.
"And what would you suggest we do?" Robert Smith, better known around town as Bob, asked. He had seen his fair share of violence and hellish situations but nothing like this. This was something entirely different than the former Marine had seen. There was something ominous about this darkness that had settled over their tiny town. "We can't send more people out there. They never come back!"

A soft whimper came from across the diner.

"That's enough Bob." In the time that they had been trapped in the diner, Bob had been getting on her nerves. It wasn't like she could outright tell the man to shut up, her brother wouldn't allow that. The woman got up and walked closer to the source of the whimper. Tucked into the farthest corner was a boy no older than eight. His brother sat a few tables down, completely sucked into his phone. Her own brother was like that actually. For the past hour or so he had been trying to get his phone to work so he could call their parents. Their parents were off on vacation and it worried them that they couldn't make any calls.

She bent down and smiled at the boy, "Hey kiddo. Let's play a game, okay?" She was just as scared as the boy so the little game would be a distraction for them both. The boy nodded and moved closer to her. His small arms wrapped around her neck and he buried his face into her neck.

"Don't make a mess. You'll have to clean it yourself Rowena." The woman's brother said as he looked up for a moment.

"You got it Sam, now Avery...let's see about that game!"

Avery nodded and followed the woman to one of the tables. She picked a few napkins from the napkin holder in the middle of the table and laid them out before grabbing a few of the crayons that were used for kid menus. "Let's make a map, okay? The first one to finish their map gets...um...a hug." The boy giggled before beginning on his map.

Sam sighed as he leaned back in his seat; his cellphone was discarded on the table in front of him. They couldn't send someone out there, no one came back and if the screams they heard earlier were anything to go by, he guessed that they hadn't made it to safety. Sam got up and approached the table that Joel was sitting at before asking if he could take a seat across from him. "We can't go outside but I agree we can't stay here for much longer."
Name: Barbara-Jean "Barb" Williamson

Name: Robert "Bob" Smith
Age: Late 60s
Occupation: Former Marine, currently works as a carpenter
Appearance: Bob is still the same tough as nails Marine and he still keep his now gray hair (formerly red) kept short. He wears his veteran's hat with a few pins and stuff from recruiters. He's a fairly tall, proud man but a recent mini-stroke has left him dependent on a cane (which he hates).

Name: Jeff Waters
Age: 16
Occupation: Student
Appearance: Jeff stands an even 5'8" with a thick build. He's on the football team and often prides himself on his workout routine and it's results. He has dark brown hair, tanned skin and green eyes. Jeff is of Hispanic decent.

Name: Avery Waters
Age: 8
Occupation: Student
Appearance: Jeff's younger brother looks a lot like him; dark brown hair styled into a low pony tail, green eyes and darkened skin. Avery is missing three of his front teeth after a car accident, his family doesn't have enough money to get them replaced at the moment. Avery is of Hispanic decent.

Name: Ruth Waters
Age: 27
Occupation: Former nurse, now unemployed
Appearance: Dark blonde hair, gray eyes and lean build. She's tall, standing at 5'10" and often is seen either fixing her hair or make up. After the death of her husband, Jeff and Avery's older cousin, she has retreated into some sort of fantasy world where she's a model (her childhood dream before moving to Rosswood)
Name: Rowena Teal
Age: 24
Height: 5'1"
Occupation: Daycare provider

Appearance: On the petite side, Rowena often has difficulty in finding clothes that properly fit her frame. She always gravitates towards looser clothing like tunics and skirts, she hates jeans so when she isn't in a skirt she's in pajama pants. Her natural hair color is blonde but she dyes it burgundy every chance she gets. Her eyes are dark brown and she has a mole on her right cheek.

Background: Rowena grew up in a very different household than most. Her mother is technically her cousin. It wasn't a case of incest but rather her birth mother had gotten pregnant at a very young age and the baby given up for adoption. Her birth mother's cousin had adopted Rowena and raised her as his own. When she was seven Rowena was introduced to her father's boyfriend and son. They moved in with them shortly after. Rowena's surname was unofficially officially changed to Teal (to the state she is still Rowena Stone.)

Name:Samuel "Sam" Teal
Age: 25
Height: 5'11"
Occupation: 5th grade teacher

Appearance: Sam is quite handsome to some with a strong jaw, sharp features and dark, deep set eyes. His black hair is kept in a short style and he's already begun to gray prematurely. Sam is fond of button up shirts and vests and other formal clothes. He isn't very muscular despite having a large frame, much to the dismay of many women.

Background: Sam's mother and father split when he was young so he doesn't remember much about their marriage. His father was given full custody of Sam after a short custody battle. His mother was given supervised visitations but rarely showed up to them, or she'd come with an excuse for being late. Sam remembers that his mother always smelled funny and in his later years linked that stench to alcohol. His father decided to move to Rosswood a few years later in order for his son to be brought up in a better environment. When Sam was eight his father introduced him to his boyfriend (as Sam's father came out two years prior) and soon after that Rowena and her dad moved in. He's always had a harder time fitting in with most due to being half African-American.
Okay! Have fun.
Triver and Ser'deni waited patiently for the siblings to return. The prince finally looked around the small town from under the hat that had been jammed on top of his head. He sighed and looked at the blind woman.

"Things are going to get a lot harder, aren't they?"

Ser'deni nodded. "Yes. We have orders and we must carry them out, even if it means killing a part of our hearts. It shall be okay though, I am still here for you." Their hands remained clasped together until Daryn and Daelyn came back.

"What would we do about bandits?" Triver asked as he pulled his horse alongside Daryn's.

"Kill them." The mage said from the back of the line. Ser'deni was more confident in her abilities to summon if she wasn't in the middle of things. The woman held tightly to the reigns of her horse. She wasn't accustomed to land dwelling beasts; her heart was in the sky and often her birds were how she traveled to the war zones in the northern part of Danycia and its surrounding kingdoms.

Triver didn't like the easy way in which Ser'deni spoke but he assumed that it came with the baggage of being a solider for the Danycian King. A soft sigh left his lips as he turned to face forward. His mind drifted to the tales he once read in a book back in the castle library. It had been an old dusty thing bound in thick leather and decorated with gold colored writing. They were nothing more than children's tales but Triver found himself believing them; tales of mermaids luring people, particularly men, to their deaths in the water and tales of mischievous fae who take a liking to human children. Triver's mother was not of Danycia, she was from a neighboring kingdom down in the far south of the lands, so he had grown up hearing her tales from home.

As it grew later out Triver's heart had begun to beat a little faster. He was unsure about this journey. What if it went horribly wrong and things weren't as they seemed. What if he or any of his companions were killed? He didn't think he could live with himself if any of the siblings or his half-sister were to be killed while trying to protect him.

"Three people are ahead on the path." Ser'deni said as she untied the black strip of cloth from her eyes. It had begun to slip down so she decided to use it to tie her hair back. "Four more wait in the trees just before them."

The Prince didn't know if she had other bird summons as he couldn't see the three crows any longer. The low hoot of an owl made the prince jump. He had never bothered to ask just how many different bird summons the woman had, for all he knew the owl hoot could have been a coincidence. To him, the unnatural vultures and red-eyed crows always were frightening. "Shall we confront them or go around them? He cannot fight well and I fear that we may be out numbered. Mages fight at our best in long range attacks." The made asked as she looked towards the dusky sky. It wasn't quite dark out yet but the path was beginning to darken slowly and steadily as they traveled further.

"Can't your birds help?"

The woman sighed, "Yes and no; depending on our situation and if we get to them before they decide to move closer to us."

The Prince was feeling terribly out of place; had no battle experience. Sure he could swing a sword (badly) but he preferred books and studying to swords and daggers, and had paid much more attention in his history courses rather than during his sword training. His stomach knotted nervously as he waited to see what would happen.
@Mokley

Your art is wonderful! I really like the colors in your first one. :)

Having an art mentor is tons of fun and a real big help since they can teach you all of their tricks~
:3 Alright. I started my post last night but I wanted your ok on these small topics before continuing it. So expect a post either tonight or tomorrow~
@Aims

I was thinking that the mermaids would try to drown others, particularly women in order to make their numbers grow. I was thinking that the mermaids would be drowned women who were possessed by an evil spirit, does that sound fine to you?

Maybe with fairies they want their numbers to grow so they abduct children and raise them as their own. They could be the equivalent of certain stories that parents use to teach their kids to be good. Maybe there's a few festivals per year where the fairies are offered gifts in exchange for leaving children alone?
Looking for a Hobbit roleplay! I recently was able to watch all three movies (in a marathon) so I've been really wanting to do something with Middle Earth~

PM me if interested. :)
