I remember how I used to have opinions about those little people, but then I read a book from Ax's perspective and abruptly I wanted nothing more than to continue reading books on Earth from an alien's viewpoint, and I was like 'Who are these fuckers, go back to the aliens' and the books are like 'no'.
As far as Ax goes, he's pretty ok. Probably not my favorite character (Hello Crayak), but his viewpoint is markedly entertaining to read even when things have gone to crap.

I have been writing as a hobby for longer than you have been alive. I have been a regular member and roleplayer of no less than fourteen different online forums during that time (including the old RPG), five six eight of which no longer exist.
I was previously a regular on the Homestuck forums, but I became so sick of thread turnover there that I asked around and eventually found the Guild. Since joining, I have exclusively only participated in Advanced RPs. Before Mahz gave NRPs their own subforum, I used to be an NRP regular in the Advanced Subforum. I am a Guildfall survivor, and know/regularly write with a few others.
If you ask anybody who has written with me in previous RPs, they should tell you that I have a generally open schedule, I post regularly and in a timely fashion, and I never drop an RP once I join unless the thread dies. Some of them may tell you that I have extensive expertise within the realms of Biology, Psychology, and Physics, which I will make no effort to validate since there is no way I can provide hard proof of aforementioned alleged expertise to anybody over the internet (though I am happy to try and answer any questions you send my way).
My favorite fandom is the Myst franchise, which seemingly nobody other than me has ever heard of.

Unfortunately for Iikka, he had still been in the air when the object had crashed - jumping over the lip of a cement halfway. It didn't help when there was an abrupt, thundering noise directly to his left, his head snapping towards the noise in a reflexive tracking motion while he was still in the air, robbing him of his focus.
So when he landed, the normally unshakable Iikka Guiomar was rocked right off his feat backwards, where his head gently slammed into the upper lip of the halfway before his body fell just under it.
This wasn't the first rough tumble Iikka had taken in his career as a professional monkey, and so after losing consciousness for all of three seconds he woke back up with a throbbing headache and feeling as light as a cloud.
"Oh fuck it. Concussion." He groaned as he flailed with his right arm, looking for something to grab onto and haul himself up. 'It must be a bad one. He thought wearily to himself as his head turned and was greeted by pinpricks of light that were twinkling and glaring in every direction from the center of the yard - he was literally seeing stars. Definitely not good. Even as he managed to grip the side of the cement halfway, his arm felt as though it were made of marshmallows, and he had to settle for pulling himself over towards the edge of the barrier so he could half-sit up against it before attempting the exciting adventure of sitting all the way up by his own self without the help of inert objects.
Thirty seconds later, he was on his feet but shaky, and shivering - even though it wasn't all that cold. There was smoke everywhere, and when someone shouted nearby the sound was accompanied by a rocking sound like metal grinding across rocks.
'Ok, that does it. Need to get to a hospital. Too many visual and auditory hallucinations. Knowing my luck, my skull cavity is probably filling with blood from a popped blood vessel.' He thought with surprising clarity.
He stumbled closer to the sounds of other people speaking, and finally they said something coherent:
"Ok, yes please, 911, make that a thing. I'm seeing stars and smoke and there's these loud banging noises, so I'm 1000% sure I have a concussion." Iikka said, clutching at his head with one hand as he guided himself towards the sound of Jason's voice. "Jason, think I'm going to need a little help here. Hallucinating pretty bad, there's this big mound right over there that looks like a space ship. Am I bleeding anywhere? Round the temple or top of my head?" His hands started combing and patting through his messy hair.

Well, since Xaxl is AWOL that leaves only a few nations who you might be expected to run into. Here's the rundown:
-The Vazri Swarms are probably sending fleets to harass your Northwestern borders, constantly, all the time. They are a stone-throw North of you.
-The Synchronicity are in a dark Nebula a ways to the Northwest, and they have enough stuff going on that they can be detected easily enough - but they largely keep to themselves, as I understand it, and their area of space is pretty hazardous and inhospitable.
-Hounderhowl's robot faction is sending out scouts ships relatively soon, and I think at least one was headed in your general direction.
-The EOA are creeping up on you from the Southeast. If their construction of VMIs holds to its current pattern, they'll start building around and within the Empire sooner rather than later. In addition, they are your closest neighbors in every direction - they have Starbases to your Southwest, North, and Northeast, and they control two planetary systems directly to your South and North as well. Like the synchronicity, they also tend to keep to themselves, but give it a while and you won't be able to turn a corner without seeing them.
Just look:
It occurs to me the the Empire must have scouts, deep space reconnaissance and all that jazz - and the Empire is an Empire. If you don't know what direction to head in, do some scouting, designate some priorities, and then act accordingly. Perhaps you want to launch counter-attacks against the Vazri? Maybe do some snooping in the Dead Stars nebula? Perhaps do something about those no-good geometric gits encroaching on your turf?
Go forth and conquer, imperial.

Sauron the Dark Lord said Terminal, from your words I get the idea that getting there is the easy part, getting out is harder, due to limitations forced upon engines by the dark nebula. But what if the FTL system work's seperately from the engines?
From what I've been told of the Nebula and the Asphodel system, the nebula does not extend fully into the system proper due to Erebos' heliosphere, which keeps interstellar media (like any good heliosphere should) out of the system. Trace elements still filter in of course, and functionally these traces impose a significant barrier to FTL. I couldn't provide you with an exact mechanism, but to provide some context, both the EOA's wormhole matrix and the Vazri Swarm's 'anything we can steal from other people' cannot function within the nebula, or transit directly into it (this is at the behest of the writers for Asphodel). So not only can FTL not be used within the Nebula, but they can't be used to go inside it either. I'm unsure if the attempt would be like ramming into a physical obstruction or more like an unexpected strain on whatever FTL system is being used, but I hadn't intended to press the issue. So if you want to enter the nebula, you'd have to stop at its boundaries and continue at sublight velocities - and to answer your question, that would mean it wouldn't matter if the FTL was separate from the engines. Additionally, the nebula doesn't appear to appreciably (results may vary) impact the functionality of sublight engines.
However, if you have an idea or argument as to why your/a particular form of FTL would work, I would contact a member of the Asphodel crew (Riemann, REDSHEILD, Druby, MissingAxis) and ask them about it.

As a chemist, I'd go as far to say as you don't know the exact specifications of beyond it's physical composition and the addendum of whatever hi-fi you added to isolate your nation. Nebulae, even dense nebulae that are so inappropriately named (), are not immune to radio waves or waves that are beyond the standard spectrum: X-Rays, Gamma, Infrared.The Graal would have no trouble identifying the presence of thermonuclear heat signatures planetside or the abundance of low frequency radio waves on the planet, this is technology Humanity in the 21st century possess. I won't press the issue however. LOL.
I am aware that dark nebulae are not as insulating as most people might think. However, this particular nebula is, as indicated above, somewhat unusual. It's been stated multiple times that it is very much a 'cold background' - any energy-intensive emission directly outside of it would stand out on sensors like a lighthouse beacon, which implies that any particular thermal/heat/nuclear signatures from inside the nebula are being masked, distorted, dampened, take your pick.
If one still posits that radiowaves would make it through, I have to cede the point. A potential excuse could be made by the point that the nebula is directly adjacent to another, much larger dark nebula (occupied by the Synchronicity), emitting radiowaves that are much more numerous. I am unsure if their nebula has similar properties (its proximity would infer so; the Erebos nebula may likely have split off from the larger Synchronicity nebula), but if you compared them on sensors side by side they would likely appear to be identical in terms of emission/output, skewed in magnitude towards the synchronicity. If you don't go out of your way to compare them side by side, any emissions escaping from the Erebos nebula could potentially be mistaken or masked by emissions from the Synchronicity nebula - depending on your sensors.
Either way, I believe it is the intent of the Asphodel writers to focus on their nation in the past, and to keep it off-the-grid in the present until those events have concluded.
If you really want to scout the system regardless, by all means - the Graal Hegemony will do what it will do. You may be left hanging indefinitely on that end if you choose to do so however.
