Age of Imperialism 2.0: TURN 4| January, 1920 (Week 2) (Turn 4, Part 2 of 12)

Thursday, January 8th
The Neeland Union agrees to build a single Karlburg-class Battlecruiser for the Kalpian Republic for the price of 25,000,000 Kalpian Mariats. Utilizing ten different dockyards, they begin to fabricate the various pieces of the battlecruiser, slated to launch in mid-1922. The ship, many of the Neeland workers realized, was without a name. "A ship without a name?" One of them said. "A bad omen."

Minister of Kurenia appeared at Parliament for a rousing anti-Soroyan speech. "Are the Taranians not worthy of freedom, as the Islanders on Romanow? So quick and earnestly the Soroyans would pick up the sword for Northern Centrans, but not even do they show sympathy for the besieged Taranians. In fact through Kurenia itself Soroyan weapons of war flow so that Chaegon might install. . empire, in Tarania. To this I say no. As a Kurenian, I support Kurenia. As a Kurenia, I support Tarania."

A normally lackluster crowd, who before Bradel's rise to power had shimmered at around 12% unemployment, shouted and cried at Bradel's speech. At just under 3% unemployment, Bradel's hard edged tactics had won him the crowd. It was the dissenters that still fouled at the idea of Bradel as the leader of Korenia.

"Hot tempered and whimpering, the Soroyans cull any who might depose their power. It is against this very tyranny that Korenia and others must stand up to. They have bullied the Osladians on refuting their national claims, wagged their finger at the far away Qingstao Dominion and forced their way into Suvrian politics with battleship diplomacy. They have no such power in Korenia!"

The Korenian 5th Army is seen moving to the Fereraian border. Fereraia, a Republic of only minor acclaim, had a standing army of around 85,000 with reservists numbering only about 200,000. The Kurenian Army, still mostly unmobilized, was around 250,000 men, 150 artillery piece, 200 aircraft and 20,000 horses for supply.

After a brief design competition from December, 1920, the government of the Imperial Republic of Fuso hastily selects the Saiyako Automotive Industries Sa-21 Saito armored car for production. Though untested, the government understood it's need for mobilization in the case of a potential war in Faresia.

Saiyako Automotive Industries Sa-21 Saito armored car model 1921

The Saito is based on the regular 38 hp chassis with front and rear single axles, but doubled Sawajiro tires at the rear, suspended on cantilever rear springs of semi-elliptic type assembly. This unconventional layout is completed by two vertical coil shock absorbers resting on the front axle, in addition to the front leaf springs. Both are attached to the upper part of the armored body. The armor is 8 mm (0.31 in) strong at the front (radiator shield, hood, windshield, sides), and perhaps 4-5 mm (0.16-0.2 in) on top and bottom, assembled by rivets to a frame. It is well sloped thanks to the engine configuration, with the engine resting beside the driver’s feet. The latter was rated for 38 hp but develops 60 to 65 hp at 2200 rpm, served by a three-speed epicyclic type gearbox worm drive transmission at the rear. The center of gravity is low, giving it excellent stability. The turret and rear part are made of corresponding rolled plates. The patterned turret has two small rear and top two-piece hatches, and at the opposite end mounts a regular ordnance Zurrandt-12 water-cooled cal.303 (7.69 mm) machine gun. A lighter one, of the regular Mahoki aviation type could also be stored inside and fired from the pistol ports.

There is a folding windshield with sight slits and two obstructed windows plus two small pistol ports on each side of the driving area. Access is performed by two rear doors and there is no compartmentation. Behind the turret rests a rear storage utility platform and two large stowage boxes on top of the rear mudguards. Between the two axles, on the lower body section, are attached two unditching boards and platforms for additional storage. Electrical equipment, shovels and spare tires are attached or stowed above. This equipment is very similar or identical to the Kalpia type in operation, allowing commonality and easing maintenance.

After deliberations, the Empire of Mille-Sessau and the Republic of Korenia strike a deal for the delivery of 45 Sinier F.130 fighter planes into Korenia. They are shipped through the Pouzzoli Strait and will dock at Kelric a few days later. Korenia reportedly purchased the planes for 5,000,000 Korenian Krachts. The Sessauan government was pleased with the deal, though many ambassadors of neighboring nations felt it was equivalent to mocking an already angry dog.

The Osladian Empire rolls out a new variant of it's new tankette, called the Molnya-205. It's been upgunned with a 37mm main gun and a more robust, Hakhov-12, vert. petrol engine, 6-cyl, 85 hp (26 kW). Capable of reaching up to 16 kilometers per hour, the tankette is extremely robust. At the testing, Korenian military leaders were reportedly present.

The Osladian Empire finishes it's first submarine, a Tyulen-Class. The first of it's kind, it's reportedly nicknamed the Dumpster, as Osladian Naval Command (ONC) never filed the naming paperwork. Strangely enough, during the unloading ceremony the ship slipped off the keel and into the water. Several crewmen were seriously injured and the ship's stern bulkheads were damaged. The ship was put into drydock and would not be available for several months. The ship's new nickname? Omen.

Without food to support it, the Chaegonian colony of Siragusa in Faresia begins rationing. The people there, upset with the current administration's inability to feed them during war, stage anti-war protests as a result. The leadership, an Osldaian born Matthias Kazhoff, began the slogan "Better Off without Chaegon," that has started to take hold in the coastal colony. Sirgausa, without a garrison of troops at all, could easily become derelict if not handled appropriately.

Friday, January 2nd
Heavy snows batter all of Centran north of Tangaria, blizzards in Eastern Centran cause serious consternation among the populace.

Saturday, January 3rd
The Heavy Cruiser San Giorgio loiters off the coast of Tarania and sends it's lone scout plane up to reconnoiter the area on the Izzi Line. Initially frightened at the appearance of huge amounts of Chaegonian aircraft, the pilot learns that the Chaegonian fighters are attached to the bombers and ordered to attack enemy troops, not shoot down enemy fighters. The plane passes over the line several times, then returns to the San Giorgio, skips to the sea and is promptly retrieved via crane.

Three Chaegonian bombers and two fighters take off from a snowy field to bomb Pozzoullian positions on the Izzi line. After an hour of flying they reach the line. The three fighters strafe the enemy, and the bombers dip low enough to see the shouting faces of freezing Pozzoullian soldiers. They drop their bombs and return home.

While returning from a reconnaissance mission, a Chaegonian scout plane crash lands over Chaegon, hitting a small barn. The pilot is killed instantly.

A seven ship convoy titled K Force departs from Tezzi harbor. Carrying over 10,000 soldiers on board, they intend to reinforce the Izzi line in the coming weeks. They are supported 5 destroyer escorts as well as the destroyers Fanetti and Graziani of the Pozzoullian 2nd Fleet

Tuesday, January 6th
Snow storms intensify over Centran.

Wednesday, January 7th
The Pozzoullian 1st Fleet, outside the Liren harbor opens up it's guns on the ships inside. Sporadic splashes are seen from the shore. A shell from the Pozzoullian dreadnought hits the Liren Leave Center, killing all 76 civilians inside. The Chaegon Armada sorties forth, with orders to distract the enemy navy if possible. While the Savio was busy repairing, the remaining 11 Poseidon-class destroyers and 2 Patrol-class Light Cruisers sort out of the harbor for a delaying action.

The Battle of Liren Harbor was a short lived battle; where the Pozzoullian dreadnought Temperanza sank a Chaegonian destroyer with a single volley. The forces exchanged fire for several minutes, with unnamed Chaegonian ships being torn asunder. Heavy hits were delivered to the Pozzoullian destroyer Carolina, who retired from the battle by steaming southwest.

@Lauder Sent to you!
Yes sir! I'll PM you his ledger!
So, Mardox is my friend IRL and he let me know about Lord Coake dropping out, could I join?

Absolutely! Here are your options:

1. Choose an Existing Nation: There's plenty of NPC nations on the board (some are very powerful)! I'll send you it's ledger and you get started. Besides a name, you're free to come up with it's history (within restraint), it's culture, etc etc.

2. New Nation in Faresia: Faresia is the equivalent of Asia, so it would be themed accordingly but there's unclaimed territory in that region. PM me and we'll get you settled for Turn 4, which is the beginning of 1921.
Age of Imperialism 2.0: TURN 1 | Winter 1920 (December) (Turn 3, Part 3 of 3)

December 1st: The winter turns dreadfully cold. A long summer dripped into fall, which hesitates on the cusp of winter. When it hit, it was dreadful. Sweeping from Soroyan and Neeland all the way to the Tezzi Strait, where the ongoing Po-Chaegonian War was continuing in the Taranian Highlands. With the snow falling, Prime Minister Bradel of Korenia announced the modernization of the Korenian Army, and the formation of a hyper loyal paramilitary division named Bradel Infantry Division. These fanatical loyalists numbered 12,000. Their announcement parade was spectacular, but few onlookers were excited.

The Bradel Division marches through Herada

December 3rd-6th: Thirty Jentink Interwar Tanks ordered by the Chaegon Empire are delivered through Tiberia, Athos and Kelric from the Kingdom of Soroya. Two of them are faulty, their motors giving out on the thousand kilometer overland journey. A third is damaged while traversing rural terrain in Kelric and abandoned in a field. Twenty-seven of the thirty tanks arrive in Liren in the fifth. With no training whatsoever, Chaegonian soldiers are ordered to the front with the tanks.

Abandoned Jentink, December 1920

December 7th: Two Chaegonian Jentinks run into a ditch, and without the equipment to get them out, must be abandoned there. The crews hitch a ride on other Jentinks toward the front. Halfway to the Izzi Line, they meet 40,000 unarmed Chaegonian soldiers headed back north due to the lack of rifles at the front.

Chaegonian Jentinks, nicknamed Rolling Stoves, head to the front. December, 1920

December 9th: The Chaegonian Air Force receives it's first orders of the war. To bomb the enemy positions. With only 60 available aircraft and the majority of them reconnaissance planes, the Liren Airfield remains mostly inactive. Two Chaegonian bombers take off (the entirety of the Chaegonian Bomber Force) with three planes as escorts. The remaining 44 aircraft, all scout planes, remain on the ground.

Chaegonian Air Field, December 1920

The bombing run has unknown results. The two bombers dropped a total of 170 kilograms of bombs on the enemy lines, then return to base for a refit.

December 14th: The Chaegon Empire purchases 24 Hiver Model 09 76mm Field Gun from the Republic of Laevatia. They are loaded onto Laevatian convoy ships and sent north toward Liren.

December 16th: The Chaegonian submarine Barretto sinks a 5,146 ton Pozzoulian convoy carrying 5,000 men headed to Tarania.

Picture taken from conning tower of Baretto, December 1920

December 22nd: The Pozzoulian 1st Fleet continues shelling the coast line, as the Chaegonian Armada remains bottled up in the cities harbor. People begin fleeing northward away from the coast, congesting the few roads the empire has.

December 27th: The Chaegonian submarine Barretto sinks a 3,344 ton Pozzoulian convoy carrying 5,000 pieces of equipment headed to Tarania.

December 31st: The Chaegonian submarine Auricchio attempts an attack on a Pozzoulian convoy during a rainstorm. The Pozzoulian destroyers Morezzi and Torenetti are nearby and come to help. After four hours of dropping depth charges, the Auricchio is forced to the surface and it's crew surrenders. The Torenetti shoots and sinks the Aurrichio.

WAR FORMS

AGE OF IMPERIALISM 2.0 NAVAL WARFARE

In warfare, everything happens in Days with Timetables.

Here are the actions your fleets can perform:
-- Decisive Battle: Take a selected fleet and give it an order to search a targeted area, as a single group.
-- Search & Destroy: Utilize a given fleet to perform a search for dispersed enemy targets, engage them in battle and destroy them.
-- Convoy Escort: Protect convoy routes in the enemy from enemy ships and submarines.
-- Convoy Raiding: Attack enemy convoy routes.

Here are the Action Timetables & Modifiers:
Timetables:
-- Operation: (Allows you to use one of the four actions above): (3 Days Preparation + X Days) [X determined based on the size of the fleet. For a submarine its 0.1 days. For a destroyer it's 0.2 days. For a light cruiser it's 1 days. For a heavy cruiser it's 2 days. For a battleship it's 2 days. Round up).

THINGS TO KNOWN:
-- Effectiveness: When an operation begins it starts at 50% Effectiveness. Any Operation over 20 Days drops this effectiveness by .5% every day.
-- Modifiers: Certain modifiers increase/decrease effectiveness.

Example: Operation: Decisive Battle
-- Fleet composition is 1 BB, 4 CA, 5 CL, 9 DD's. That would be 14.5 days, or 15 days to prepare that operation.

Timetables:
-- Operation: (Allows you to use one of the three actions above): (2 Days Preparation Per 10,000 Men with Equipment/1 Day Preparation for 10,000 men without Equipment + X Days) [X determined based on the composition of the army]

X Modifier:
-- For every 1 Tank its 0.10 days.
-- For every 1 Artillery it's 0.01 days.
-- For every Light Aircraft it's 0.05 Days
-- For every Heavy Aircraft it's 0.10 Days (Round up).

So for an army with 60,000 men (60,000 Equipment) and 60 Artillery Pieces and 20 Fighters, preparing an operation would take: 13.6 days, or 14 days.

THINGS TO KNOWN:
-- Morale: When an operation begins it starts at 50% Morale. Any Operation that lasts over 20 Days drops this effectiveness by .5% every day.
-- Modifiers: Certain modifiers increase/decrease effectiveness.

Example: Operation: Offensive
-- So for an army with 60,000 men (60,000 Equipment) and 60 Artillery Pieces, preparing an operation would take: 12.6 days, or 13 days.

EMPIRE OF MILLE-SESSAU

Royal Senate, Aville, November 30th, 1920

"It must be done, I say!"

Millean Prime Minister Lucien Arbel waved his arm lackadaisically, but several of the members of parliament would not have it. He'd been ranting for the better part of an hour, but Deputy Speaker Pierre Frédéric Dorian smashed the gavel across the Survaekom wood and Arbel heaved a great sigh then settled back into his chair. "The Prime Minister has spoken then," Dorian said, peering around the room as if someone might feint a look of disbelief.

"The ink is not yet dry on the Samovian constitution," Sessauan Prime Minister Louis de Carné mumbled. "While Mille would have all the corners of the Empire folded over, Sessau will not let it stand!" The room erupted into cheers and the Deputy Speaker swung his gavel again. "Not this time, Lord Speaker! It stands to reason that while the Empress may not understand the faculties of independence, I do! Where the Samovians fall, so too do the Ardenoisians! So too do the Lorians! Once the matter is settled, the empire stands as one, or not at all!"

A great many of the senators stood, clapping and hooting. It'd been a serious point of contention. The Samovians--with Soroyan economic aid--had weaseled their way into winning a war of independence where the Mille-Sessauan Army could not stop them. The government was torn. The Sessauan natives, mostly members of the Royalist Party wanted a second shot at the Samovians. If the Samovians get away, the Milleans are next, they say. The Milleans on the other hand, representing a majority as the State Party, wanted to focus on internal politics and maintain the integrity of an already crumbling ethnic empire. With a weak monarch on the throne, it was the majority holding Royalist Party that was having it's way.

Royal Senate in Aville, November 1920

Kormont Shipways, December 3rd

The Sofie was the second of two planned Mormeaux-class dreadnoughts. The expansion of the Mille-Sessau Navy was at the forefront of the budget for the next ten years. The Naval Act of 1919 had offered a promise of 3 dreadnoughts, 6 armored cruisers, 10 light cruisers and 20 destroyers by 1929. A strong Mille-Sessauan Navy would be undaunted by Soroyan interference in Tervasa and would help buffer against Survaekom politics in the area. Historically a land based power, Mille-Sessau's observations of naval prowess in the Terrible War turned the nation's dated ideology around.

Mormeaux-class Dreadnought Sofie under construction, 1920

A deal struck between the Mother Nation and the Kingdom of Soroya ended up with a pair of Lux tankettes being sold to the Tervasan nation. Without a heavy industry or a well designed automotive industry, Sessauan engineers were delighted to get their hands on the tankettes. "They look more like death traps," Leftenant Armand Bouat said, stopping to pose for the camera. Automotive engineer Victor Denain was intrigued however with the rudimentary engine and fixed ball mount on the gun.

Mille-Sessauan engineers and army officers engineering inspect one of the Lux tankettes, December 1920

Within days of the tankettes being received, Mille-Sessauan army officers recruited 35 mechanically adept soldiers into the Official Mobile Corps, or (Corps Mobile Officiele) (CMB), with the Lux tankettes being used as functional trainers. General of the Mille-Sessauan 19th Army Pierre Marie de Grave said that to mistake the weapons for folly would be suicide, but to obsess over them would be murder.
Age of Imperialism 2.0: TURN 1 | Fall 1920 (November) (Turn 3, Part 2 of 3)

November 1st: The Pozzouli submarine P-13 sinks a Poseidon-class Destroyer as the The Chaegon Armada returns to Liren for refueling. Torpedoed as she was heading into the harbor slit, two other Chaegonian destroyers immediately begin dropping depth charges in an attempt to locate the submarine, but it slips away undetected.

November 2nd: The Imperial Guard digs in and are joined by 5,000 Taranian Volunteers, though most of them are without weapons; as is the case for much of the Chaegonian Army. The journal of Paul Conrath, Imperial Guard, 15th Rifles:

Chaegonian Trenches, November, 1920

Emperor Giannelli has forgotten us. We have not yet met the enemy and already we are defeated. There is but one rifle for every four men, and I am not among the lucky ones. We have machine guns and mortars set up, watched over by a dozen men who have nothing else to bide their time with. Even the Taranians who join us are appalled by the poor conditions here. Alfredo says the ships passing the coast are not Chaegonian, but Pozzoulian. We sleep to pass the time, or play hide and seek with the enemy. Judging by the number of shots they take at us daily, they are not for lack of rifles. I have seen General Petroni march through the trenches and inspect our positions, but he has said little and I wonder if he believes that we can win.

New men are being trained, more rifles are being produced. But the Emperor has lost his mind. He sends orders commanding many thousands of men. Eighty thousand men to hold the line! There are less than forty-thousand of us. Perhaps with the annexation of Tarania, the emperor has thought himself all powerful.

November 8th: The Imperial Republic of Fuso begins building a factory in Najin.

November 9th: The Grand Survaekom Empire reveals the SV-11 Triple Turret, sporting three 12" guns in a single mount. This is the first ever seen, and would allow dreadnoughts to inflict terrible casualties on opposing navies.

November 21st: The Pozzoulian 1st Army begins Operation Jester, a push from the 17th Infantry Division and the 33rd Artillery Regiment, a total of 13,000 men and 10 Cannone-75 artillery guns. The battery opened up for fifteen minutes, then the men went over the top of the trenches and surged forward. The Battle of Izzi (1920) had begun

  • Battle
Operaton Jester materialized out of a desire to keep Chaegonian industry out of the war. With an under equipped enemy, General Corrado Gabriele knew that with a quick push up the coastal road, he could potentially smash the Imperial Guard and break free for a march straight to Liren. Planning began in late October for a push, though such a maneuver was risky due to the already thinly spread line across the Taranian highlands. General Gabriele would use ten of the Kalpian based Athihk K.18 armored cars to push up the coastal road and break through the trench line there. The only defenses the Chaegonians had were their Hellraiser artillery batteries. Used defensively however was a sporadic stop gap. Through early November, Gabriele began shifting elements of the 33rd Artillery Regiment to the left flank and stockpiling shells for a barrage. The men were ready.

Pozzoulian riflemen hours before the commencement of Operation Jester, November, 1920

After a fifteen minute barrage, Gabriele ordered Light Force Coronado, named after Lieutenant General Petra Coronado to take the Coastal Road. He rode in one of the Athihk K.18's, renamed Po-4 toward the enemy trench line, with elements of the 17th Infantry Division falling in on foot after. The morning of the 21st, the 10 Po-4's took off with infantry jogging behind. One of the Po-4's had a radiator leak and stopped the offensive. The Chaegonians met the Po-4 advance with return rifle fire, and several artillery guns were fired with their barrels dropped but failed to score any hits.

Two Po-4's refueling before the push up the Coast Road to Izzi

While crossing a trench, one Po-4 blew it's front tire. Chaegonian soldiers clambered on top and pulled the crew out, taking them hostage. The line however was broken after only thirty minutes of fighting. The Po-4's loitered, killing scores of Chaegonian's until the infantry caught up to storm the trenches. The trenches were assaulted and after three days of fierce fighting, taken by the Pozzouli's. A third of the Chaegonians, men without any weapons fled from the battle immediately to secondary lines that had been taken beyond Izzi. By November 25th, Pozzouli soldiers had marched into Izzi, which was neither joyous nor sympathetic.
  • Losses
    Empire of Chaegon
    -- 1,197 Regulars (-357 Rifle I, -1,217 Equipment I)
    -- 4 Artillery I (Hellraisers)
    Grand Duchy of Pozzouli

    -- 1 Artillery I (Cannone-75)
    -- 3 Armored Car I (Athihk K.18)
  • Aftermath
The Imperial Armada took less casualties than the Pozzoulians, who were forced to bear the brunt of a frontal assault for a fifty kilometer stretch of land and the city of Izzi, which now provided a small port for larger operations. Chaegonian regulars, being trained, will be available at the beginning of the new year, and the new rifles being produced were being boxed and shipped toward the front. The Chaegonian Army, which had zero trucks to transport, were forced to use borrowed vehicles from the Chaegonian population.

November 26th: The Empire of Mille-Sessau reaffirms territorial claims over the Republic of Samovia, which declared independence from Sessau in a brutal war with Soroyan support ten years ago. "It has come to the attention of this Parliament, that the time may yet come Sessau sees her lands returned to her," Deputy of the Parliament Clement Savier said on the senate floor. Empress Alexandra de Vaille had no comment on the matter.
