It is certainly not 'optimal', but it *is* doable, depending on what you want to do with it. You could go swords or valor bard and play them more like a warrior with some magical ability

Shotgun? More like a 40mm grenade launcher. Though, I guess they do have 40mm buckshot shells. Those'll fuck up someone's day from 20 meters away.

Its a tournament, I imagine a lot of things go on- Tourneys are more than just a bunch of 1v1s in a bracket until there's only one winner, there's typically a bunch of events- like a fair for violence.
Though I'm not sure about a Final fantasy styled tournament, I know medieval ones have your typical jousts (which is in your typical 1v1 tournament bracket), and archery contests. They also have a melee- two sides organized for a mock fight, and a melee for non-noble peoples- which is literally just a dozen people slugging it out in a pit until one person is left.
With the tournament ground being the size they are, I don't think 1v1s would be available for general public- more likely someone who has a survived several rounds of a melee can qualify for a bracket for non-mounted individuals.
